Happy New Year! I’ve set myself a personal target for 2018 and it involves all of you. I want to create a spark that will ignite the creative potential of the area and help support my ambitions for The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre.

With your help, I want to set up a Creative Laboratory, but please forget Bunsen burners and icky dissections; the Creative Laboratory will be there to encourage any of you with a creative idea you’d like to develop further, to share it initially with us and then, under The Phoenix umbrella, work on it in a safe, supportive environment.

One Night of Ska is a two-hour homage to the music, bands and artistes that influenced two generations of teenagers. Taking the best of the original 1960s Jamaican scene as well as the 2 Tone English Revival of the late 1970s, this is crammed full of songs made famous by names such as Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker, Madness, The Specials, The Selecter, The Maytals, and Tony Tribe.

A new verbatim play made up entirely of the words of real people, Carry on Jaywick is a story of hope amongst the hopeless, of laughter in the darkest times and a celebration of what it means to fight for where you come from.

Jaywick is a seaside village on the Essex coast, recently ranked the most deprived neighbourhood in the UK. Mickey and his team of cornermen never seem to have much luck in the boxing world, the fighters they manage always end up losing and, after a disastrous last outing, no one wants to work with them. Until, that is, they sign Sid Sparks, a young boxer whose fast hands and winning ways catapult them into a world of success they’ve never known.

However, you can’t win all the time and soon Mickey must choose between the life he’s enjoying, and the well-being of his young charge.

Inspirational, passionate and unconventional , Isadora Duncan revolutionised the dance world.

Described as “the most famous American in Europe”, she dedicated her life to raising the importance of dance as an art form, yet was constantly misrepresented by the press and died in poverty in a tragic accident.

Long Nose Puppets’ show PENGUIN is based on the award-winning book by Polly Dunbar. Ben is delighted when he rips open his present; inside is a penguin. “Hello Penguin!” says Ben. Penguin says nothing. Ben tickles Penguin; he pulls his funniest face; he puts on a happy hat, sings a silly song and does a dizzy dance. Penguin says nothing... so Ben fires Penguin into OUTER SPACE, Penguin comes back to earth without a word! It isn’t until a passing lion intervenes that Penguin finally speaks...and when he does, Ben discovers something that was really worth the wait.

On November 9th 2016, two momentous things happened to Angela, which have deeply affected her.

Donald Trump won the US election and she turned 40.

Now, Angela is in no rush to join the ranks of middle aged, she’s only just getting started. She didn’t become a comedian until 33, only learnt to swim when she was 37, didn’t fall in love until 38 and passed her driving test at 39. Why the hurry? She is un-pensioned, un-married, un-mortgaged and a fully paid-up member of the Peter Pan generation.

People have stopped asking Barnes what she’s going to be when she grows up, and instead want to know when she is going to settle down; she hasn’t been bothered by the ticking of the biological clock, thus far - maybe it’s missing batteries. But what happens when the choices you make aren’t your choice anymore? Does her body have different ideas about the future?

Geoffrey Jones, M.P. and sometime architect, is convinced that the Russians are about to launch a nuclear strike against England. He builds a bomb shelter equipped with everything his family will need to last out such a strike.

They plan to try the thing out for a three-week experiment when, inadvertently, they are trapped inside with the mother-in-law, the telephone installer and a milkman. They try to make the best of the situation when who should enter through a side hatch but their next-door neighbours who, ever striving to keep up with the Joneses, have now kept down with them by building their own abutting shelter. Hilarious complications ensue until everyone gets out.

Tickets can be booked by telephone on 01420 472664, in person or on-line at www.phoenixarts. co.uk. Reservations must be paid for within 48 hours or your tickets may be resold. Please note from 2 January 2018 a booking fee of £1.00 per transaction will be charged on all Credit, Debit and Cash payments.

Free Wi-Fi is available.

Concessions: Tickets for selected shows are available at a concessionary rate. Concessions are available for under-16s, full-time students and senior citizens.

Rob’s Theatre Club: Sign up at the Box Office it’s free! Members receive exclusive discounts on selected shows, a complimentary glass of wine and opportunities to meet the cast and company after the show. Look out for the Rob’s Theatre Club symbol.

Phoenix Membership: A yearly membership costs £10 for adults, £7.50 for concessions and £20 for a family. In addition to a £1 discount on selected shows, members will be sent regular newsletters and brochures.

Access: Our theatre is fully accessible with the Box Office situated on the ground floor. Our volunteers will be happy to help with your access requirements - just let us know when booking. Access to a hearing induction loop is also available.

Find Us: The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre is situated near the Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex borders with excellent transport links via the A325 (Farnham), M3 (London and Southampton) and A3 (Guilford and Portsmouth).

The theatre is served by several bus services and is near to Alton, Bentley, Liphook & Liss train stations.
