So Much to Tell You… If you turn into the recently renamed Barbados Road you’ll no longer be greeted by military buildings. In their place, a new community is being built and at their heart is East Hampshire’s only full-time theatre and arts centre. We’ve become a bit of a building site ourselves of late. My apologies if this has made a visit to The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre more of a challenge than it should be. However, the good news is that the extension to our car park is now complete and that includes a new outdoor performance space, ‘The Playground’. This exciting new facility has made been possible by the vision and support of the Homes & Communities Agency and will be officially opened on Saturday 16 September with an outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (see page 5). Picnics, Prosecco and Puck at The Phoenix and an insight into my ongoing plans for the Centre.

Saturday 16 September - 1.00pm Tickets: Adults £10, Kids £8, Family (2+2) £34.00

The HandleBards are the world’s first cycling theatre company. Before touring their “beautifully bonkers” production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream around the world, they pedalled it 1500 miles around the UK by bicycle, with all the necessary set, props and costume in tow.

Suitable for all the family, bring a picnic or buy a tasty bite from the barbecue hosted by 1st Liss Scout Group to celebrate the opening of The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre’s brand-new outdoor theatre space, ‘The Playground’

Now, the show is back by popular demand - and, in usual HandleBards style, we can expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter. And what’s the play about? Well - four young lovers find themselves enveloped in the dream-like arms of a magical forest full of sprites, where a feuding Fairy King and Queen are at war over the possession of an Indian boy. A group of amateur actors share the same forest. They’re rehearsing for a play. Fairies and humans collide. Hilarity ensues.

A head-to-head that leads to a feast of clowning, comic competition and physical silliness, that’s what! With just a pocketful of magic and fun, a lot of strange noises but no words, these Storytellers take the audience on a fishing trip, into a demented disco, to strange invisible rooms, and into mad worlds that exist only in their heads. Struggling to think, live and love beyond the stifling expectations of duty, class and convention, governess Jane Eyre and Master Edward Rochester take a dark journey towards sensual and intellectual liberation. Told through Jane’s eyes, English literature’s most celebrated autobiographical novel shocked the Victorians, and Charlotte Brontë’s gothic subversion of fairytale romance is now distilled for the stage - under its full title - by writer/director Elton Townend Jones. Performer Rebecca Vaughan embodies everywoman Jane - and several other characters in this intimate study of love’s realities.

Her husky toned, lived-in voice sounds like she has a 60-a-day habit, but was actually caused by a serious illness when she was three. Drawing inspiration from such legendary vocal royalty as Etta James, Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield, Elles Bailey is certainly starting to make a name for herself with Country Music Magazine having named her as “One to Watch for 2017”. Elles is breaking down the barriers of traditional genres, taking inspiration from many and fusing them together to bring you her own unique sound.

Guy Davis & Fabrizio Poggi:

Blues musician Guy Davis’ new album, “Sonny & Brownie’s Last Train – A Look Back at Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry” is an homage to these two hugely influential artists, not only on Guy’s career, but to thousands of musicians around the world. One such artist is the Italian harmonica ace, Fabrizio Poggi, who collaborates with and produced this recording.

Robin’s first new stand up show in three years is a clash of the two cultures, a joyous romp through his favourite artists and strangest scientific ideas. From the work of Stanley Spencer to Niels Bohr, it is 90 minutes fizzing with ideas about creativity in science and art, as well as asking why we believe we see what we see and why we believe what we believe.

Guy and Fabrizio have a relationship going back a decade in which they’ve performed together on tour in Europe and in the United States. In 2013 Fabrizio produced and played on Guy’s highly acclaimed recording, ‘Juba Dance’, which was number one on the Roots Music Charts for eight weeks.

Robin will have just finished a 70 date, record breaking tour with Brian Cox that concludes at Wembley Arena.

Christmas Gothic

Christmas: a time to remember the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future. A time of feasts and festivities, of holly and mistletoe, a time of visits and visitations. A time of ghosts.

A little slimmer but still as “belly laugh funny” (Manchester Evening News), everyone’s favourite northern charmer is back on the road and better than ever.

Come in from the cold and enter into the Christmas spirit as a dark and spectral woman tells haunting tales of the festive season, lighting a candle to the frailties of human nature and illuminating the cold and chilling depths of the bleak, wintry dark…

After touring last year’s show, he’s had a think about people. And feelings. About people Justin knows, their feelings and how he feels about them. And they about him. It’ll be a (very) funny show. Promise.

Dyad Productions resurrects a Victorian tradition by presenting three seasonal tales of terror to scintillate the gooseflesh for dark Christmas nights.

Justin has appeared on Live at the Apollo, Phoenix Nights, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and Fighting Talk (BBC 5Live).
