Dozens of students walked out of Perth and District Collegiate Institute on the afternoon of Thursday, April 4 protest the Ford government's proposed education reforms. Grade 8 student Alex Wilson said that the proposed changes are "not fair" as she stood on the corner of Victoria and Boulton Streets with her friends; intermediary students who walked out sat on the steps in front of the school. Wilson said she wanted try out for the football season this fall, but is uncertain if there will still be a team with all of the proposed changes. She said she was also concerned about arts programming, which she can only access
through the school. "That's something I love to do. It keeps me calm," Wilson said. She said she was also walking out because of the potential for the loss of teaching jobs. "They (teachers) work for their job. They earned their position that they got," she said. As for the Ford government's proposal that students should take four mandatory online learning courses over their four years in high school, Wilson said that "not a lot of people like to do online stuff." The provincial government is also looking to up the cap on class sizes, to which Wilson said "I feel like they should keep it the way it is." Standing beside her, Grade 11 student Chelsea Bartraw said her concern was that if there were man-
datory online courses, "not as many students (would be) going to school." They'd just think "oh, I can do it online." She noticed that some of her fellow students who said that they would walk out with her did not, but she was still hoping that voicing her opinion would help special needs students, because otherwise, they "won't be able to get enough support," in the classroom. Bertraw said that while the teachers could not publicly signal their support for the walkout, she felt that the "teachers are on the side of the students." Wilson's mother, Tammy Wilson, said "I was in support of them both walking out," both Alex and her brother Mitchell, who is in Grade 11. As a parent, one of her biggest issues was the increase in class sizes. "I don't agree with the changes that Ford wants ... Teachers are already struggling with class sizes as they are." If the class sizes rise, kids who need help "won't have any help." With more students in each class, she predicted that "there will be a lot more kids coping with mental health (issues), feeling overwhelmed," she said. "They're scared."

RADON GAS A BIGGER PROBLEM IN LANARK, GRENVILLE, THAN ELSEWHERE IN ONTARIO DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The Lanark, Leeds, and Grenville region leads the way in radon gas - and not in a good way. Mainul Husain, Health Canada regional radiation specialist, told a standing room only crowd in Perth on April 1 that studies found that this region has an average 19 per cent of its homes have a radon gas problem - one of the highest rates in the province. "Congratulations, you are the winner," joked Husain during his presentation at the Perth pool on Monday, April 1. (The session was hosted by the Otty Lake Association.) This region is "one of the hotspots

The evening was kicked off by Dr. Paula Stewart, chief medical officer of health for the Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit. Stewart said that when she heard about
the meeting, "it was like music to my ears. We've known it was a problem. Radon exposure in your homes, it is really important." Looking specifically at the 19 per cent number, "this is a significant problem," she said. Husain held an impromptu science class to start off his presentation, pointing out that radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, that is odourless, tasteless, and colourless, meaning that we humans can not taste, smell, or see it. It comes from uranium found in rocks and soil. In 2012, Health Canada released a cross-country study on radon concentration in homes. In particular relation to Ontario, the
study found that, of the 4,000 homes in 36 Ontario health regions tested for radon. "Radon is not good. Why? Because it's radioactive," said Mainsul. However, there is always background radiation no matter where you go. "Even in this room, there is some radon. There is no way to escape it." But, the radon level in that room was at a very low concentration. "The problem is when it gets into our home," he said. And while your home may have a radon gas problem, your next-door neighbour may have little radon. "It's very rare that there is no cracking on the foundation," of a house, which lets the radon gas into a home. "It's a gas. It's every-

Radon gas can move through soil, like sand and gravel, but once it hits the atmosphere, it gets diluted to low concentrations.

Just one more win. That's all the Perth Blue Wings need to claim the CCHL2 championship and the elusive Barkley Cup. It was a full house on Monday night in Perth as 420 fans watched the Blue Wings battle it out to win game three of their best-ofseven series against the mighty Ottawa Jr. Senators and take a 3-1 lead in the series. It didn't come easy, as it took two overtime periods to do it. It was Ty Power with the OT winner for the 3-2 victo-
ry. Mack Miller had Perth's other two goals, with Johnathan Peacock in the crease. Power has been lighting the lamp at the most crucial times in the past two games, as he also scored the game winner last Friday to tie the series at one apiece, and the OT winner in game three on Saturday night. Coach Michael McLean said, "Our guys never quit. We kept chipping away and working." With their Friday night win, it was the first time this year that the Blue Wings defeated the Ottawa Jr. Canadians, in what McLean said was a huge mental victory. "A lot of experts thought we would not win a game in this series," he said. "Our players are proving the critics wrong." It's about trust. Our relationship with our readers is built on transparency, honesty and integrity. As such, we have launched a trust initiative to tell you who we are and how and why we do what we do. This column is part of that project. How do you get your sources? It's one of the most frequent questions journalists receive, and the handling of sources is not something we take lightly. Sometimes sources come to us. We'll be approached by a community member we've made a connection with through another story, or taking a phone call, email or social media message from someone who has an interesting story to tell. For routine types of reporting such as crime, all factual information should be confirmed by an official source - for example, the police in the case of a crime. Responsible journalists avoid publishing rumours by getting the facts from sources whose job it is to know the truth in
such situations. Other times we must look a little harder for sources. This could mean reaching out to people via email, social media and phone, or even knocking on doors in search of comments. Usually, these types of sources add colour to your story - anecdotal accounts and/or character descriptions of the story's subject. The public interest is best served when news sources are identified by their full name, and we always encourage people to go on the record; however, there are exceptions. Sometimes, reporters will use confidential sources if that is the best way to serve the public interest. Underage and vulnerable people may also require anonymity for their own safety. The decision to publish comments by an anonymous source is not one we take lightly. The reporter must discuss the situation with their senior editor, and if the decision is made to move forward with the comments, the reporter must describe in the article why the source is not being named. Essentially, everyone, including you reading this article right now, is a potential source for a reporter. Friday, April 5 was a night to celebrate, as our 80plus Metroland papers racked up 73 Ontario Community Newspapers Association awards, and our news team of 10 in the Ottawa Valley earned seven of them. Smiths Falls reporter, Evelyn Harford earned our only first place plaque with her story on LGBTQ+ issues surrounding the town's first pride event last summer. The judge said it was a story that highlights the concerns and experiences of people we haven't historically seen represented. This one did a particularly good job of that and Evelyn let the voices of the people speak for themselves. We had four second
place finishes. Tara Gesner's series on the political scene in Carleton Place earned the number two spot and her first-ever OCNA award. The judge highlighted her "very thorough look at a small town meltdown at the hands of the current mayor." Desmond Devoy had the other second place finish with his headline writing, which included 'Urine Trouble', and '50 Shades of Brown'. The judge said these headlines had him laughing and that he actually enjoyed reading about pee and paint trouble in Perth. Evelyn also received two second-place finishes: one for environmental writing, in what the judge said was an important story and what community journalism is all about; and one for her story about the missing soldiers' names on the Smiths Falls cenotaph,
which was "a well documented story." Desmond was third for a creative 'grip-and-grin' photo of balls being presented to local schools. He had the staff at Metro, Perth toss a bunch of balls in the air, which the judge said created action which is good for a static photo. I earned third place for a health and wellness story, which highlighted the need for AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in Perth after a man had a heart attack while playing soccer and his teammates administered CPR. Of note from the judge: "It's a great mix of strong quotes from a variety of sources and helpful medical information. This is a story that could potentially safe a life." "I never thought I would be on stage here," said Jordan. On Dec. 19, her mother found out that she had cancer - but did not tell her and the rest of the family until after Christmas. She was saddened to know that "the one person who holds our family together was sick." If there was any good news to be had, it was that her mother's cancer was "a curable one. Steve Rymal thrust his medical form out in front of him before hundreds of students. This was it. This form was for blood work that very afternoon, Tuesday, April 2, which would let him and his doctor know "if I am cancer free," or not. It does not get more real than this, but for Rymal, a teacher at St. John Catholic High School in Perth, he admitted that "I've been on the sidelines," literally and figuratively, with the school's annual Relay for Life, which will be held Friday, May 10. But "I've always anticipated a visit from cancer in my life," he said during the relay campaign kickoff. There is "a lot of cancer in my family. I've got a lot of negative feelings about how cancer has treated my family." "I feel pretty good right now," said Rymal, as he did
before his diagnosis - a diagnosis that almost did not happen. His family physician was retiring and suggested, "Why don't we just do a whole bunch of tests on you so we can have a benchmark for the new doctor." Fast forward past the diagnosis and Rymal found himself on an operating table at The Ottawa Hospital's cancer centre this past Nov. 30, to have his prostate gland removed. He looked up to see this "Star Warstype spider thing," is how he described the robot that the doctor was using to perform part of the removal. In that moment, and the moments leading up to it, he admitted that "you feel helpless. You're in other people's hands." He has a new outlook on the sometimes cynical view people have taken on cancer research, as they look at "all the millions of dollars that are raised to research cancer, and they haven't cured it yet," he recalls them saying. "Maybe it's an industry in itself." But he urged the stu-

FITNESS FUNDRAISER HITS $940 FOR INTERVAL HOUSE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The women of 30 Strong sweated it out, so that Lanark County Interval House did not have to. Four fitness instructors, including Lisa Haw-
key, Pam Grimm-Coupak, Jessie Swain, and April Fraser, led the "30 Strong" fundraising event for the Lanark County Interval House at the Perth pool on Saturday, March 30, which raised about $940 for the shelter. Parrish Wilson, volun-
teer co-ordinator and communications co-ordinator at Lanark County Interval House, thanked the participants on Saturday morning for "doing a pretty serious sweat for us" that morning. She thanked the organizers for putting on a great event since "we (In-
terval House) get a good fundraiser without our resources having to go into it," Wilson said, because of the organization's limited resources. The amount raised is "pretty huge," she said. She encouraged participants to "think of ways in your life that you can make
a difference," like the one they had made that morning. Interval House has been in operation for 40 years, and receives an average of 5,000 calls per year. The women who call are "dealing with a lot," she said. "Our shelter is almost always over capacity. We

• Radon kills 3,200 Canadians per year, according to Health Canada. • Radon kills 800 to 1,500 Ontarians per year (according to the provincial health ministry.) • The lifetime cost of each lung cancer patient is estimated at $1,002,175 (according to the Workers Health and Safety Centre in Markham, Ont.) In 2012, Health Canada released a cross-country study on radon concentration in homes. In particular relation to Ontario, the study found that, of the 4,000 homes in 36 Ontario health regions tested for radon: • On average, about five per cent of Ontario homes were above the Canadian guideline of 200 Bq/m3 (this means 200 Bacquerel units, abbreviated to Bq, so this refers to 200 Bacquerels per cubic metre. One Bacquerel equals one radioactive disintegration per second, according to the airthings.com website.) • In 13 Ontario health regions, 10 per cent or higher percentage of homes were found to be above the guideline. • In the Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit region, 19 per cent of homes were above the guideline. • Approximately 16 per cent of lung cancer-related deaths every year (equivalent to approximately 3,200 deaths every year) can be traced to radon. • sApproximately 13.6 per cent of lung cancer-related deaths every year (equivalent to approximately 850 deaths every year) can be traced to radon. If you are a smoker, there is double reason to worry. Smoking while exposed to radon gas puts you at an even higher risk of getting cancer. "People who smoke should quit," said Mainsul. He pointed to anecdotal stories of people, who never smoked a day in their lives, getting lung cancer. He surmised that some of those cases may have been caused by radon gas. "We think it should be mandatory to test schools and day cares," for radon, he added, pointing out that regular citizens can pick up a radon test at most hardware stores. A HARD CALL One of the hardest calls Bob Wood has to make is having a customer whose spouse has discovered that they have cancer. Just the other day, Wood, a radiation mitigation specialist with Mr. Radon, found out that "somebody's wife had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. That'll be the fourth husband I've dealt with in 2019." The kicker is that the husband had just ordered radon testing for his home. "Please, please test your home," Wood said. "There really is no safe level." Not only does Wood own his own radon remediation company, but he is also the past president of the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST), and a current board member. He told the audience that the
Ontario building code was amended in the 1980s to protect homes built from then on for radon gas, but that older homes may need some extra attention. Wood agreed with Mainsul that "it's criminal that our schools have not been tested," he said. He is currently working on eight bank buildings to deal with their radon problems, and has worked on schools in Alberta with radon problems. "Any radon fix has to be designed in such a way that it cannot be messed with by humans," said Wood. He pointed to one story of a school he worked on in Alberta, where fresh air was brought in to clear out radon, and bring the school's numbers down to an acceptable level. However, once the students left at 2:45 p.m., the air flow was cut off. By 11 p.m. that same day, when the janitors left, the radon level was back

That said, there is likely many other things in those walls, especially since it hasn't been occupied for years and hasn't had an operating HVAC system for a decade. Perth Remembered has outlined some of the jail's past including its most common use and number of executions. According to a report from the Courier, Perth Town Council approved the jail's heritage designation for its exterior. That means that interior renovations can still occur, but the exterior's look would need to remain unless
reviewed and approved by the Town. That said, there are so many incredible things that could done with that building: apartments? Offices? A haunted tour for tourism? Kidding! (but am I?). There will tours taking place throughout the month of April to show the property, and you can learn more by going on the Realtor Commercial website. KINDNESS AND CROSSING Last week I ran into Jane Nitschmann who wanted to share her gratitude to the considerate drivers on Drummond Street. If ever she's making her way to the hospital, she'll usually use Mary Street to park
her vehicle. As she looks to cross Drummond Street to get to the hospital, Jane says she's amazed by how kind the drivers are to stop in order to let her cross. She now does the same thing when she's a driver. What considerate acts of kindness to make a person's life just a touch bit easier. DID WE GET A DOG? Since first writing earlier this year about the possibility of welcoming a dog into our lives, I've been asked by a range of avid readers (four) if we ended up getting a pup. The short answer: no. We're just pulling out of a busy season for work and life and are just coming up for air. That said, after a trip to the Museum of Nature over March break, our son has pushed to get a pet fish. TAY VALLEY COMMUNITY CHOIR SPRING CONCERT We all talk about the weather – here is your chance to sing about it! An eclectic mix of music loosely based on the theme of weather will be presented by the popular Tay Valley Community Choir. Under the everpatient direction of Rebecca Worden and accompanied by the talented Mary Lou Carroll the choir will sing selections ranging from musicals to pop songs to folk tunes. As is the custom at Tay Valley Choir concerts, there will be plenty of fun as well as opportunities to sing along (words provided) with familiar tunes. Featured guests at this concert will be ‘Three Guitars in Spring’. David Ramsden and Rob Rainer, both former Tay Valley Choir members, play guitar and sing with Mike Erion playing archtop guitar. Together the trio has explored jazz standards of yesteryear and other popular music with jazz interpretations. They will share some of their favourites. Several vocal sections of the choir have also prepared familiar songs to perform. The Spring concert will be held at the Maberly Hall on Friday, April 12 at 7:00. Admission is $10 at the door. Food Bank donations are welcomed. Refreshments will follow the concert allowing time to chat with neighbours and friends. Come for the music, and stay for the food.

April 28 marks the National Day of Mourning in Canada to remember those injured or killed while on the job. In Perth, there will be a service at 12:30 p.m. at the monument along the Tay Canal at Crystal Palace. There will also be a service in Smiths Falls at 3 p.m. that afternoon. This event will take place at the monument by the Canal Museum in Veterans' Memorial Park. There were 12 reported deaths last year according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour's website, two of which were in the east region of Ontario. Join the Lanark County Labour Council, and friends and family of those injured or killed on the job at either of the two monuments in the county. In 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress, the Parliament of Canada passed the Workers Mourning Day Act, making April 28 an official Day of Mourning. It has since spread to about 100 countries around the world and is recognized as Workers' Memorial Day, and as International Workers' Memorial Day by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website, the most recent statistics from the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC) tell us that in 2014, 919 workplace deaths were recorded in Canada - more than 2.5 deaths every single day. Among the 919 dead were 13 young workers aged 15 to 19 years; and another 25 workers aged 20 to 24 years. Add to these fatalities the 239,643 claims accepted for lost time due to a work-related injury or disease. Including 7,998 from young workers aged 15 to 19, and the fact that these statistics only include what is reported and accepted by the compensation boards, and the situation is even more dire. What these numbers don't show is just how many people are directly affected by these workplace tragedies. Each worker death impacts the loved ones, family, friends and coworkers they leave behind, changing all of their lives forever.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD, START HERE STEPHANIE GRAY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD … STARTING WITH A LIST STEPHANIE GRAY Column
I was chatting with a work colleague about various dilemmas last week. "Look up Admiral McRaven's inspirational speech," he said. "It'll make your day." A quick Google later, and it kinda did. The speech is about 18 minutes long which, I
know, is a significant amount of time to devote to watching anything on the fantabulous Interwebs, but there are worse ways to spend 18 minutes. This is a commencement address delivered at the University of Texas at Austin on May 17, 2014 by Naval Admiral William H. McRaven. He outlines 10 life lessons he learned while training as a Navy SEAL. Sometimes the endless inspirational mumbo jumbo out there gets tedious, but this was interesting. So, for those of you who haven't already wandered off to watch the speech, I'll run through the 10 rules for "If you want to change the world," adding my own delightful commentary, of
course. 1: "Start off by making your bed." This sets you up for accomplishing big things by completing a small thing right off the start. This resonated with me as someone who sometimes starts a to-do list with "make list." 2: "Find someone to help you paddle." His point is you can't change the world alone. You need a team and you need a coxswain to be the guide. You've heard me talk about my tribe? This is them. Ask for help. 3: "Measure a person by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers." SEAL training, he says, was a great equalizer. In short, respect everyone. You get what you give.

4: "Get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward." Training taught the SEALs that things will never be perfect. Life isn't fair. It's a good reminder for those of us who may find themselves with wonky ears and knees or other challenges that you have to find a way. ("Just keep swimming," as Dory would say.) 5: "Don't be afraid of the circuses." If trainees didn't meet certain physical standards, they had to complete extra training, known as "circuses." This was painful but built resiliency and strength. Failure is good for you. It's hard, but you learn from it. That one really made me think. Failing a bit of a phobia over here.
6: "Sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head first." It's important to take risks. I think this ties in with trusting your gut. You'll know if it's the right risk to take. Some of the best things come from taking a risk. 7: "Don't back down from the sharks." Stand up to the bullies. You have to deal with things that stand in the way. 8: "You must be your very best in the darkest moment." Admiral McRaven explains training taught the SEALs that in the most difficult times you must be calm and composed and bring forward all of your tactical skills, physical power and inner strength. It's not always an easy thing to find in those moments, but it is the way through. (Start by breathing.) 9: "Start singing
when you're up to your neck in mud." In training, that one person who started singing is what got the whole gang through an ordeal. Sometimes all it takes is that one voice cutting through the mud. Be that inspiration. 10: "Don't ever, ever ring the bell." Bell ringing definitely means different things in certain circumstances, but in this case a SEAL who rings the brass bell at training camp is giving up and leaving. If you want to change the world, you can't give up. There are a lot of things to fix. Let's get to it. (Makes a list...) MOTHER'S DAY DINNER MAY 4 SUPPORTS GUATEMALA STOVE PROJECT The fourth annual Mother of a Dinner (MOD) is happening on Saturday May 4, 2019 in a brand new location, the Good Shepherd Hall at St. James Anglican Church in Perth. Last year, this successful event generated $10,000, translating into over 40 stoves that were built for families in Guatemala during this past year. Jordan Kennie (owner of Picnic Catering in Perth) will once again be working culinary magic with a Central American-themed meal. There will be vegetarian and gluten free options, as well as a silent auction featuring many Mayan handicrafts; cocktails begin at 6 p.m., appetizers at 6:45 p.m., and dinner is served at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are available online at http:// guatemalastoveproject.org/fundraiser. A full table of eight people for $400 ($50 per person), or single tickets available for $60 per person. A $30 tax receipt will be issued for every ticket purchased. There are only 20 tables available for this event and tickets sell out quickly, so buy yours now! All proceeds from this Mother's Day celebration meal event will benefit Mayan mothers and their families through the building of improved cooking stoves. Hundreds of thousands of Maya in Guatemala continue to cook indoors over wood-burning fires. Cookstove smoke is toxic, and contributes to a wide range of chronic illnesses and health impacts such as: early childhood pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancer, bronchitis, cardiovascular disease and low birth weight. The Guatemala Stove Project (GSP) helps alleviate these problems by building vented cookstoves that are adapted to the way Mayan families cook - providing a large surface for a wide variety of foods to be prepared, as well as heating water for washing and drinking. A GSP stove uses 50 per cent less wood than the traditional three-stone fire, thereby saving precious trees and reducing carbon emissions. The crowning glory of this kitchen appliance is the chimney pipe that takes the poisonous smoke out of the house. It is an 'improved cooking stove,' and while most of us would find it rudimentary, Mayan women much prefer it to cooking on the floor over an open fire. To date, 6,500 stoves have been built. PERTH PIE CO. TEAMS UP WITH ARTIZEN KOMBUCHA TO OFFER UNIQUE FLAVOUR PAIRINGS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Kombucha and pie? Who would have thought these two delights would go together ... like wine and cheese ... or PB and J? Friends Dasha Smolentseva and Kassy Boulay did, and their products have been flying off the shelves at their 12 Gore St. E. Perth location since they became "business roommates" a few weeks ago. Boulay, who along with her partners, Josh Reil and Lise Boulay, has been operating Perth Pie Co. for a few years on Foster Street. Kassy said she was tossing the idea around of needing more space, and was talking to her friend, Dasha, about joining together last fall. They started the search for the larger space and found their current lo-
cation. They each applied for grants from Rideau Valley Heartland, and the young female entrepreneurs were successful at obtaining moneys to help with renovations and installing industrial equipment and washrooms. Their partners have also helped with a lot of the renovations. They hired all local contractors to do the work, including plumbers and electricians. "It's such a great space," Kassy said, who moved here from Westboro in Ottawa's west end. "We saw Perth and loved it here. We opened the retail space on Foster two years ago." Dasha and her partner Sebastien Armand, also moved to Perth a few years ago. It is in Perth where they decided to open Artizen Kombucha - a probiotic, healthy tonic that comes in an assortment of fla-
vours and uses all-natural organic ingredients. Many local fruits are also found in the pies made by Kassy and staff. Artizen Kombucha is sold in Ottawa and Toronto, and many places in between, but Perth is home to the bottling facility. There is also a tap, where her customers can bring their own glass bottles to fill, or purchase one from the business. The artisan tea beverage is handcrafted in small batches, naturally fermented with a probiotic culture using fresh seasonal ingredients. Dasha said the kombucha is found in health food stores, coffee shops, grocery, yoga and fitness studios, and they are members of Kombucha Brewers International, supporting many local non-profit community organizations. "Our customers have
been insanely supportive," Dasha said. Kassy added that her business has "tripled to quadrupled" for the Perth Pie Co. since opening on Gore Street. "We use spring water and premium organic loose-leaf tea."
PERTH PIE CO. Kassy said the Perth Pie Co. has been something she wanted to do for some time. Her pies are "just like grandma would make," and include fresh, local ingredients, especially seasonal fruits. There is nothing artificial, and pies are baked fresh every day. "They're good for five days in the fridge," Kassy said. "We sometimes bake two and three times through the day to keep up to the demand." Fresh peaches, apples, rhubarb, berries are some of the classic favourites, but with a flourish, chocolate can be added to any crust for a little extra flavour. "Since we moved here,
we've sold 500 pies in a week," Kassy said. The bestseller for March was the apple pie, followed closely by the raspberrypeach pie, and wild blueberry. The Perth Pie Co. has every kind of fruit pie, cream pie, savoury pie, or curd pie imaginable, and the "superfruit" haskap (long blueberry-like berry) pie. Kassy just received a fresh batch of Lanark County maple syrup, and to complement the Festival of the Maples on April 27, she will have maple pies on offer. "It is just like a big butter tart," she said about maple pie. "But we make them with dark maple syrup." The Perth Pie Co. also sells cookies, dessert bars, and tarts, Fine Chocolates by Ludwig, and Fluid Solar Roasted Coffee. "Bill and Lorraine Kemp (of Clayton) roast their coffee beans off grid using solar and wind power," Kassy said. This is served on drip,
and to customers by the pound. "Their packaging is also biodegradable for the green bin" Kassy said. The Perth Pie Co. also has a suspended menu folks can purchase products for those in the community who might not be able to afford it. "It's meant for the community to help each other out," she said. "We haven't had too many people use it, but it's there if needed."

SELDOM USED, THE STRAP STILL STOOD TALL IN CLASSROOM EMERSON AND CECIL WERE WELL ACQUAINTED, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column
It hung on the side of Miss Crosby's desk where only the rows in the upper grades could see it. But those of us in Primer Book certainly knew it was there. Hanging from a cup hook, black as ink, and as long as a yard stick. It was the dreaded strap! Those uppity pupils from the school in Renfrew called it the cat of nine tails, but to us it was simply "the strap." It ranked right up there in respect like a stern look from Miss Crosby, or a slap on her desk with her ruler. The strap was a con-
stant reminder that we better toe the line, or we would pay dearly. Never once, was I ever in need of the strap. I was too much in awe of the teacher, and tried to be on my very best behaviour at all times. Aunt Lilly once called me Miss Goody Two-Shoes, the meaning of which escaped me entirely. My brothers Emerson and Cecil, however, were well acquainted with the strap, although it had little or no effect on their behaviour. In fact, when they had provoked Miss Crosby to the point where she had to resort to using it on their outstretched hand, it almost always brought snickers from everyone at
the Northcote School. For one thing, both boys stood a good six-feet tall, and Miss Crosby came to about the middle of their chests. So it was quite a rigmarole when she pointed to one of them to come to the front of the room, and hold out a hand. Since the hand was about level with her head, she had to take the little wood bench she used to wipe off the top of the blackboards and stand on it. One time, she almost lost her balance, and Cecil grabbed her arms just before she fell backwards, strap and all. Of course, she didn't have the heart to discipline him after that! By the time Miss Crosby got everything organized to administer the slap with the strap, the urgency would have long since passed, the rest of us

would be fighting to keep from laughing out loud, and she would order the offender back to his seat. By then her face would be beet red. I thought the strap was only meant for the boys at the Northcote School. Never once did I ever see Miss Crosby use it on any of us girls. Sadly, we weren't saved from sitting on the stool in the corner of the room at the front wearing the cone-shaped dunce cap, however. That wasn't because we were misbehaving. It was because we hadn't done our homework. Miss Crosby didn't believe in sending us to the corner if we didn't understand the lesson or made a mistake. It was simply used as a lesson in misbehaving. Only once did Cecil have
to go to the corner, and by the time he scrunched down on the little stool, his knees were up to his ears, and he was sent back to his desk with orders to write out some short sentence 50 times, which was really no punishment at all. It was obvious the chair and dunce cap weren't going to work with Cecil. The only other punishment handed out by Miss Crosby for misbehaving was not being allowed to go outside at recess. It seemed to me bad Marguirite spent more time in the school at recess than she did outside. She was a thorn in everyone's side, and we were all delighted when she was made to stay indoors. The strap, to me, was the most feared method of discipline at the Northcote School. Seldom used,
and only when Miss Crosby had been provoked beyond reason, it reminded me of one of the big black water snakes we sometimes saw in the Bonnechere River. And if you were unfortunate enough to be disciplined at school, there was a very good chance you paid dearly for the deed by a parent when you got home as well! Passed away peacefully at the Smiths Falls Hospital on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at the age of 70. Beloved husband of Rita Brown. Loving father of Vance (Ginette), Aaron and Brandon (Heather). Cherished grandfather of Rigel, Pleiade, Carina, Ethan, Madeline, Addison, Caelan and Maeve. Wayne will be missed by his mother-in-law Francine, and siblings Jim (Joan), Jack (Ilene), Gary (Margaret), Debbie, Brian (Linda) and Aldena and by his brothers-in-law Mark (Mitzi), Ray and Scott (Diane) and sister-in-law Gina (Eric). Died peacefully at home after a 13-year journey with several different cancers. With family at her side and friends in her thoughts, she chose to leave this planet on Thursday April 4, 2019. Peggy leaves behind: Jeremy, her husband of almost 46 years, her son Andrew, his wife Shealah and their son Evan, her daughter Kate and her husband Murray Chidley, her sister Janet George, her brother George MacMillan, and his wife Siobhan Muldowney. Peggy is also survived by nieces and nephews who always appreciated her kindness, epitomized by gracious acts such as baking lemon meringue pie instead of ordinary banana birthday cake. Peggy was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec on November 25, 1950, where she lived until moving to the Quebec Labrador coast with Jeremy to teach and adventure in the early 1970s. After a few years they returned to the Eastern Townships of Quebec where she taught, farmed, gardened, and started a family. She was a leading light in the battle to keep local English libraries vibrant through the Parti Quebecois/referendum years of the late 70s and 80s. In the late 80s the family relocated to Brighton, Ontario and eventually settled in the Perth area, which became their long-term home. Peggy continued to teach and volunteer in the community for many years. Her family and friends can attest to her culinary talents (whether over campfire, wood stove, or gas range), her welcoming home, and her ability to win an argument (usually all in good fun or as mental exercise). Peggy referred to herself as a secular humanist, and her wit and intelligence was honed by an insatiable appetite for reading works of sci-fi, literature, non-fiction, poetry, and history. Her love of gardening and homesteading led to a market gardening business as well as volunteer work as a Certified Master Gardener. She had an enduring appreciation for nature and animals, and took great pleasure and solace in spending time near water; moonlit canoe paddles, early morning swims in calm lakes, or just sitting to watch the water and ‘come into the peace of the wild things’ (as Wendell Berry wrote). She was, in fact, a renaissance woman. The family wishes to thank all the people at the Perth hospital who were involved in Peggy’s care, including Doctors Last, Riehl, Del Grande, and Kuchinad, as well as Leslie Del Grande. Many thanks to the committed staff involved with MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) - a caring and sympathetic group providing medical expertise and comfort. Great thanks also goes to the staff and volunteers at the Perth Chemotherapy Clinic. Their care and kindness was beyond reproach. Family and friends were invited to a gathering to honour Peggy’s life held on Saturday April 6th, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. in the Blair & Son Family Centre, 15 Gore St. West, Perth. At Peggy’s request, in lieu of flowers any donations in her memory should be directed to the Great War Memorial Foundation for Palliative Care.

Isobel was born in Carleton Place but lived in Almonte for most of her life. She was what can best be described as “the salt of the earth”. Isobel is predeceased by her husband Russell McGill and her daughter Lynda Krueger (McGill). She will be truly missed by her son Carl, and his partner Laurie Crawford. Christena was a longstanding member at Bells Corners United Church, where she lovingly cared for children in their Nursery for many, many years and enjoyed every minute of it. Gloria passed away March 30, 2019 at the age of 83. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. She will be lovingly remembered by husband The Rev. Ed Kostyk and her two children, son Bob Ireland (Lynda) - grandson Shawn Ireland (Victoria) and daughter Joan Zador (Andrew) - grandchildren Kit Zador and Beverley Zador. Gloria will also be missed by step daughters Linda Kostyk and Cathy Bagnoli (Doug). Gloria received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Syracuse University and her Masters degree at St. Paul University. She was the first Chaplain at the Ottawa Hospital and later worked at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital. Gloria was ordained in 1986, certified by CAPE, and completed her residency at Foothills General Hospital in Calgary. Her last position before retirement was at Rosehaven Care Centre in Camrose, AB. Gloria returned to Ontario and spent her twenty retirement years as a Chaplain and Priest to those most in need. For the last few years, Gloria was a dedicated member of the Perth Palliative Care Working Group. Hers was “a life lived for others”. February 4, 1930 - April 5, 2019 In his 90th year, Bob died very peacefully in Orchard View Retirement Community on April 5, 2019. The devoted husband of Frances for 66 years, Bob was the much loved and respected father of Catherine (Ken), Robert (Marian), and Susan (Jeff). He was the loved grandfather of Eleanor, David, Emma (Kevin), Bob, Isabel (Travis), Sarah (Philip), Margaret and Katherine and great-grandfather of Audrey. The son of the late Burns and Margaret Renwick, he is survived by his siblings, Helen (Frank), Jerry (late Shirley), Millie (late Charlie and Oscar) and John (Carol and late Patty). Bob was predeceased by brothers Roy (late Theresa and Giselle) and Bill (Sylvia). He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews. Bob was a father figure and mentor to many members of his family. He will be dearly missed. A man of curiosity, Bob was always interested in learning and understanding. He was a hard worker, an enthusiastic square dancer, avid snowmobiler and above all, a principled man. Bob was physically stoic while emotionally warm and sentimental. The Renwick family is very grateful to the wonderful caring staff of Orchardview Retirement Community. Dr. Christiane Deschenes, Bob’s family physician, continued her excellent care to the end of Bob’s life. In addition, thank you to Richard Evans, Johnny Terpstra, and Tim and Pauline McCurdy who facilitated Mom’s daily visits with Dad over the last 2 years. Thank you for the love and support given to his family by individuals who visited and sent messages from near and far which were shared with Bob in his final days. (nee McKay) August 7, 1922 - April 4, 2019 Peacefully at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Ottawa on Thursday morning, April 4, 2019; Miriam Annie Seabert of Arnprior passed away at the age of 96 years. Beloved wife of the late Maurice Seabert (November 25, 2008). Dearly loved mother of Valerie Strike (Gary) of Carleton Place. Cherished Mama of Shannon (Chantelle) of Franktown; Benjamin of Carleton Place; Robbie (Erin) of Kingston and Stacey of Vancouver. Proud Great-Grandma of Sierra, Hayden, Elsie, Peter and Leona (born April 4, 2019). Miriam was the last surviving child of the late Leslie and Mabel (nee Jones) McKay. She was predeceased by her sisters: Mildred Blumberg (late Herbert), Beryl Bailey (late Raymond), Jean McCabe (late Gerald), Elizabeth Royea (late Clifford) and Gladys Brown as well as her brother, Bill McKay. Dear sister-in-law of Richard Brown of Sault Ste. Marie. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Miriam lived a long and wonderful life. She loved her family above all else. She enjoyed 59 wonderful years of marriage with Maurice. She will be missed. Friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior on Saturday morning, April 20th from 9:30 to 10:45. A Tribute to Miriam will follow in the Pilon Family Chapel at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow at the Malloch Road Cemetery, Arnprior. We are a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team and community based mental health organization sponsored by the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital. Our Community Advisory Board provides community advice, suggestions and participation in an advisory capacity to Lanark County Mental Health and the sponsoring Board regarding program planning, development, and review of services relevant to the operation of the Program and its impact on the community. There is an opportunity to fill three Community Advisory Board Volunteer Positions The positions would consist of residents from Lanark County to serve as “community-at-large” positions for a term of three years. We are hoping to have a youth perspective and would welcome Transitional aged youth or representative from youth organization to join our Board. The Community Advisory Board meets seven times during the year. The Board provides promotion of Lanark County Mental Health programs and services in stimulating understanding, reducing stigmatization and improving awareness of adult mental health services. Plans are being considered for a pedestrian walkway to be added to the Peter Street bridge, and possibly a second bridge upstream. Doug Nuttal of Jp2g Consultants Inc., updated Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, April 2, about the progress of the infrastructure master plan for the annexed lands west of Perth - essentially, the lands west of the Tay where the Perth golf course is located. Nuttall described the region as "a series of islands within the flood plane," though there are plans for 120 homes in the an-
nexed area. Adding a walking portion to the existing Peter Street bridge, "is an affordable solution. Putting in a new bridge, that is a big budget item," said Mayor John Fenik. "Using existing infrastructure makes sense." Development and protective services director Forbes Symon cautioned that the plans do "not mean that they (the lands) will be developed in five, 10, or 20 years." Symon added that it is "premature to determine what form it (development) will be," whether it is houses or condos. "These types of developments do need to have an exhaustive amount of studies that go with them."
LOCAL $100,000 EARNERS MAKE SUNSHINE LIST The Government of Ontario released its Sunshine List on March 27. The Canadian consumer price index (CPI) has increased by 50.05 per cent from 1996 to 2016, according to Statistics Canada. If the threshold were to follow the CPI, the size of the Sunshine List for 2018 would be reduced by 85 per cent, or down to 23,208 people. Even at that, Symon expressed optimism for the lands - "this is a very, very significant, watershed moment for the town." The expansion of the town's sewage lagoons and expanding capacity at the water treatment plants has allowed for this type of residential development. "If you build it, they will come," said Fenik. "People will buy and they will move to Perth ... There is a huge opportunity with growth all around us. We should seize the day." URBAN SETTLEMENT BOUNDARY The discussion then flowed into Symon's official plan amendment proposal, regarding expansion of the urban settlement boundary. According to Symon's
report to council that day, the amendment to the official plan will allow for an expansion of the boundary, "and increase the available lands for residential development, consistent with the growth allocation provided by Lanark County," he wrote. He said that the town had four "poles" of development it wanted to see nurtured. "We don't want it (development) in Perthmore ... we want to spread it out," he said. "There is the potential for infill growth in town." The proposal was passed unanimously. Once passed by full council later this month, it will go to Lanark County council for approval.

diagnosis did cause a commotion on the home front. "With my mom out of commission, I had to step up," and take on more duties at home, she recalled. "It was so hard to see her in pain. Seeing her weak made me sad." Since returning home though, her mother has rallied. "After six weeks, she's almost her old self." Her family has been made stronger as the result of this battle. "You don't know how strong your family can be until you have to be," she said. STUDENT CANCER Teacher Mary Retty, herself a cancer survivor, recalled that "as a parent, there is nothing more tragic than watching a child suffer," and, sadly, cancer does not discriminate. Another member of the school community, Connor William Forsyth, 13, was found to have a chest tumour this past winter, which was pushing down on his lungs, heart, and airways. On Jan. 21, the Grade 8 student was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Childrens' Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. He is now in the midst of his third round of chemotherapy and the tumour has shrunk in size. THAT'S A RAP Joined on stage by student Maya Forbes, teacher Dave Peters performed a rap song to the tune of the Rihanna/Eminem 2010 duet "Love the Way You Lie." "It's going to be relay that I remember the most," said Peters after dropping his beats and spitting out altered lyrics. He came close to losing his job last year when teaching positions were cut at the school, and he worried that he could face a job loss later this year too, saying that it was "not an easy time." But if this was to be his last Relay for Life assembly, he wanted to remember the good times, and the poignant moments. In May, he will travel with Perth fire Chief Trevor Choffe to Nepal, to take part in the Tenzing Hillary Mount Everest Marathon, one of the highest and toughest races on earth. But as he pushes himself on the world's rooftop, he will remind himself that "that little bit of pain is nothing," he said. "I'll do it one step at a time," remembering the more gruelling cancer journeys that have been shared in the gym, and on the school track, over the past 18 years. "We all have a race to run. We all have a mountain to climb. Let's do it together," he said.
