PERTH TEAM WINS LITTLE ROCKS CHAMPIONSHIP A team from the Perth Curling Club won the Glen Sage Memorial Little Rock Championship Cup over the weekend. This championship is the highest level of achievement for Little Rock Curlers (up to age 12) in the area. Leading up to the championship, there are four qualifying tournaments, where two teams from each make up the championship tournament roster of eight teams. Three of the qualifiers are in different areas of the Ottawa Valley Curling Association and the fourth is from the Greater Kingston Curling Association. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this competition. The Almonte Club won the event last year, and hosted this year's bonspiel. This is a great tournament for young curlers looking to get into more competitive levels of curling and Hogline Curlers Proshop has sponsored the event for the past 10 years. The championship trophy includes the names Rachel Homan, See PERTH, page 16

PERTH SPORTS HALL OF FAME SECURES $300-A-YEAR FUNDING FOR NEXT 4 YEARS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com The Perth and District Sports Hall of Fame has secured $300-a-year funding from town hall for the next four years. Mayor John Fenik agreed to make the annual donation by drawing from the mayor's discretionary fund, during Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, March 5. "I don't think we can support sustainable funding from now to eternity," said Fenik. "But we can provide sustainable funding for this term of council," which runs until 2022. "We sincerely appreciate it. It was more than we asked (for)," said former deputy mayor John Gemmell, making a return to the council chambers as part of a delegation from the sports hall, which included chair Tim Zander. The original funding request had been for $250. The hall has been running since 2016, where three athletes, three team builders and three teams have been inducted since then. Originally located at the Perth and District Union Public Library, it has now moved to the Matheson House, in the tourism information office at the back. "We are looking to preserve history," said Zander. "We are hoping we are building some civic pride ... and inspiring younger people to get active in sports." Already, one young visitor has told him, "I want to be on that Sports Hall of Fame in the future," he recalled.

Laurie Weir/Metroland Parth Mayor John Fenik presents Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito with a gift after visiting the town on March 20. The visit was her first to Perth, where she and Fenik discussed various aspects of the relationship Perth shares with Japan. This was an opportunity to strengthen ties between Perth and its sister city, Asago City in Japan. Very happy to see such a beautiful town," Ito said. "This is my first time to visit Perth, but I am very impressed. I am also happy to learn the exchange between Perth and Asago continues, and we discussed how we can establish more and stronger ties between Asago and Perth." "Sake - we will check on that process," she said with a laugh. She was also in favour of student exchanges. Being the first female consul-general of Japan in Toronto, Ito was happy to advocate for women's leadership and spoke of a conference in Japan next month. "I am happy to meet any future leaders or business leaders who are interested in coming to Japan. From April 1-3 Canada is sending women on business to Japan. I am also accompanying the mission to see what possibilities will flourish in the future." The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada will lead,

with support from the private and public sectors, Canada's first women-only business mission to Japan between April 1-3. The first two days will be held in Tokyo at the Canadian Embassy and will consist of business-to-business matching and network opportunities, industry site visits, and high-level discussions of women's economic advancement strategies in Canada and Japan. The third day will be hosted at Kyoto Women's University. The mission offers opportunities to 25 women entrepreneurs (founders of/CEOs or those leading Canadian businesses) looking to grow their businesses in Japan. The mission will focus on promoting womanled or -founded companies that provide services, products and solutions for the elderly and aging in Japan in the technology, services and consumer products sectors.

Perth Mayor John Fenik welcomed Takako Ito, consul-general of Japan, on Wednesday, March 20 on her brief trip through Lanark County. The visit was Ito's first to Perth, where she and Fenik discussed various aspects of the relationship Perth shares with Japan. This was an opportunity to strengthen ties between Perth and its sister city, Asago in Japan. "We discussed a wide range of issues," Fenik said. "We discussed the twinning with Asago City and the fact that she's hoping that can continue. She's interested in having students come and stay for short periods of time in our school systems, for English as a second language and cultural immersion." Fenik said overall they chatted about global issues in general and it was a "really interesting conversation." Perth has been twinned with Asago City since 2000, and this was the first time that Ito has visited the town. "We've had the ambassador here before and we have delegations here about every two years." Twinning means that there is a formal agreement between the towns to maintain contact and relations to enrich each other's culture. "By the Japanese visiting here, they enrich our culture, and when we go there, we look at economic relations and how we can strengthen those ties," Fenik said. "She talked about Japanese sake/whisky, which I thought was great, being located in Perth. Those were the kinds of things we talked about." "Such a charming city.

ANALYSIS

LGBTQ IN THE VALLEY: RURAL RESIDENTS SHOW THEIR PRIDE HOLLIE PRATT-CAMPBELL hpratt-campbell@metro land.com 2019 marks 50 years since the first ever Pride parade, held in New York City in 1969, and 33 years since Ottawa held its first Pride celebration, a picnic in Strathcona Park, in 1986. Yet Pride events have only recently taken off in the Ottawa Valley. Carleton Place and Smiths Falls held their first ever Pride celebrations in 2018, and Kemptville is set to hold its first later this year. (Lanark Pride has held an annual festival in Perth for the last seven years.) "There is a shift happening in rural communities that I am really loving," Holly Brown, founder of

Rainbow Union, Dundas and Grenville told the Kemptville Advance last month. "People are doing away with the stereotypes often associated with rural towns and LGBTQ2 inclusiveness." Increased programs and services for the LGBTQ community are also notable. Last fall, Trinity-St. Andrew's United Church in Renfrew became the first same sex marriage affirming church in the area and last month, St. Paul's United in Perth followed suit. Furthermore, Renfrew County Pflag recently Transition Clothesline, a program that provides clothing to transgender people. What does this say about the state of the LGBTQ population in

these rural communities? Is it a matter of increased acceptance and inclusivity, or simply increased visibility? Or perhaps some combination of the two? It depends on who you talk to. Prior to the inaugural Smiths Falls Pride Parade on Aug. 18, 2018, 21-year-old Brandon Hill told the Record News that he was "shocked" to see the event happening in his hometown. He said he was "kind of afraid for safety just because it's 2018, it took this long to finally come here." The festival ended up being a hit, according to chair of Smiths Falls Pride, James Ae Perkins. "Before the event, I said if the four people from our organizing committee show up, I'll be happy. We had 500 people in the park,

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Rev. Gerry Kerr holds a rainbow-coloured candle at the start of the affirming service at St. Paul's United Church on Sunday, Feb. 24. and people came up to me for weeks after to say thank you and talk about the benefit for people going forward." Perkins hesitates to use the word "acceptance" to 34 41

describe the apparent increased LGBTQ inclusivity in Ottawa Valley area communities because he's personally never felt not accepted as a gay man in Smiths Falls.

MCCRIMMON: WILSON-RAYBOULD SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR SECOND OPINION ON SNC-LAVALIN FILE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Kanata-Carleton Liberal MP Karen McCrimmon believes that former attorney general Jody WilsonRaybould should have sought more opinions on the SNC-Lavalin file. The MP, who is currently the parliamentary secretary to the minister of public safety and emergency preparedness, and was a former Liberal leadership candidate in 2013, was speaking to the LanarkFrontenac-Kingston federal Liberal riding association's meeting at the Perth Lions Club on Saturday, March 23. On a day when other Liberals were hitting the airwaves - like Humber River-Black Creek MP Judy Sgro to former federal justice minister Anne McLellan - to talk about the scandal which has dogged the party since February, the riding association's outgoing president, Heather Mirizzi, said that McCrimmon would be addressing "the elephant in the room." "It's been a tough time lately," said McCrimmon. "When I heard about the SNC-Lavalin (affair) ... I was uncomfortable." She recounted how, during her military career, she sought out - and brought along - 13 experts with her to explain, and agree, that a search-andrescue unit on the east coast should be grounded temporarily. "You damn well better

"You ask for 13 second opinions." (McCrimmon became the first female air navigator in Canada in 1981, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1998. She was appointed commanding officer of 429 transport squadron in Trenton, becoming the first woman to command a Canadian Forces flying squadron.) Throughout the scandal, which broke with a story in The Globe and Mail last month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that he asked Wilson-Raybould to "revisit" the decision to pursue a prosecution against the Quebec engineering giant. "I don't buy this, 'It's my decision,' (view)," said McCrimmon. "I think you really need to consider all

of your options." McCrimmon stressed that "I don't know what happened. I don't know what the pressure was ... I don't know the whole story ... It's all hearsay." But as someone who aspired to be party leader herself at one time, she said she knows how she would have spoken to Wilson-Raybould: "If that was somebody that worked for me, I'd say, 'Show me your evidence.' You'd better be able to defend your decision. I don't see any trouble to ask for a second opinion." McCrimmon acknowledged that there was plenty of blame to go around Parliament Hill during this scandal. "Do I think there were miscommunications? Oh, big time," she said. Was there, "heavy-handedness? Probably." But she stressed that "nothing illegal happened. Just inappropriate pressure." Without naming Trudeau's former adviser, Gerald Butts, by name, she alluded to members of his inner sanctum, whom she called "detail people who maybe took a step too far." She added that "I'm not saying that mistakes were not made." She rallied to Trudeau's side, saying she believes he is "trying to change culture. He's trying to do it differently. But it brings its own set of challenges ... The good guy is the prime minister who is trying to change the culture." She even admitted that, since being elected as a Liberal MP in 2015, "I don't

matter, McCrimmon charged that "the justice committee is a kangaroo court. It's highly partisan," even with a Liberal majority. Earlier in the meeting, McCrimmon joked that the crowd was a sight for sore eyes - literally. "My eyes are burning," the Constance Bay resident said, after 31 hours plus of voting in the House of Commons, on motions related to the scandal.

It's the sweetest time of the year, and the Lanark & District Maple Syrup Producers' Association is inviting visitors to join them April 6 and 7 in celebrating the fifth annual Maple Weekend event and a new season of maple syrup production in the region. Since its introduction in 2015, Maple Weekend has become a popular spring excursion for visitors to celebrate the sweetness of the season, while getting a first-hand view of maple syrup production. Visitors to Maple Weekend come from Ottawa, Brockville, Kingston and beyond, eager to experience the maple season and sample the sweet treats and outdoor adventure at local sugar bushes. In Lanark and District, maple syrup producers are excited at the opportunity to treat visitors to a full day of maple-inspired interactive fun. "We've had a very long winter leading up to the 2019 maple syrup season, and we're looking forward to the coming of spring and the launch of another season producing maple syrup," Harold Walker, association president, explained. Maple Weekend is ideal for everyone, from families with young children, to teenagers, couples and seniors. Walker explained that visitors can take home what they would like from the event, whether it's a chance to learn more about how maple syrup is made, or a chance to experience a fun day with their family. "Maple Weekend is a family-friendly spring outing, and the perfect time for visitors to learn more about Canada's maple heritage, sample maple taffy and have fun at a local sugar bush," Walker said, "Whether you're watching sap being gathered or

WHAT HILLIER'S EXPULSION COULD MEAN LOCALLY It didn't come as much of a shock last week when the Ontario Progressive Conservative caucus chose to remove Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier permanently from its ranks. Rumours had been swirling about the expulsion for weeks, until the decision finally came March 15, a day after Hillier went public with a letter to media outlets. In it, he alleged the real reason for his suspension on Feb. 20 wasn't for disrespectful comments to families with autistic children, but for tensions with Premier Doug Ford's senior advisers. He also called on constituents to help sign a petition for his reinstatement. Hillier's expulsion brings to mind when former Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren was removed from the PC caucus in May 2017 over a video that surfaced in 2012 misleading voters and bemoaning French-language rights comments. MacLaren continued his duties, shifting to the Trillium Party of Ontario and even made a run in the June 2018 election but wasn't successful. Will Hillier resign, operate as an independent, or make the move to another party? But there's a bigger question if he remains in office. The veteran MPP has always been an outspoken advocate for constituents but how effective will he be in pushing issues in his riding to the forefront? He no longer has the ear of the premier and caucus. Many of our local municipalities are banking on the province to kick in funds for critical infrastructure upgrades. Take the Town of Carleton Place, for instance. Central Bridge on Bridge Street is in desperate need of replacement within the next five years at an estimated cost of $7.7 million. Its last rehabilitation was in 1983. As a main thoroughfare connecting the town, the tax base can't support the reconstruction and rely on government funding to help with the costs. In Mississippi Mills, who are currently putting the finishing touches on a five-year review of its Community Official Plan, council is concerned over recent news that a completely new Provincial Police Statement could be coming soon. Will this have an impact on all the work that's been done on the document over the past few years? Hillier is expected to appear as a delegation to that council in May and this is a question they have ready for him. Or what about the impact of funds lost through the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund, beginning in 2020, as the province is set to review the funding model? Municipalities rely on these dollars. Not to mention what will now happen with the crusade Hillier recently took on to shake up the roles of conservation authorities across the province? While it remains to be seen how his expulsion will have an impact on the local riding, one thing we can count on, Hillier won't be silent for long.

WHO WE ARE SAYING IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA YOU READ: FORD DENIES HILLIER'S ALLEGATIONS OF 'POSSIBLE ILLEGAL AND UNREGISTERED LOBBYING' AT QUEEN'S PARK

"Of course! Lousy politics at it's best. Randy is a straight up good man and speaks for the people that's why they don't want him around those slimy politicians are not interested in the people in the least."

KATHLEEN MERCER-DURANT, FACEBOOK

"I would believe Randy over Ford any day. I had my doubts about Ford when he tossed his hat in the ring for leader of the PC's and now he's proving to me why."

KEN BAR, FACEBOOK

"Considering Ford's background of corruption and the lying he must do to prevent firestorms, puts him in the way of truth. Hillier is far more believable and has proven his integrity while in politics.:

EDWINA LEE FORT, FACEBOOK

"I guess if Ford "angrily" denies corruption charges it must be true. Hillier should launch an inquiry to prove his assertions and to clear his name. Other-

wise it all just he said he said. This is what you get when you vote in a corrupt administration."

JEFF COLLVER, FACEBOOK

"here's a lot of corruption going on in the Ontario PC party since Doug Ford took office and Randy was far too honest and not a yes man about to go along with it!"

KIM VATERS, FACEBOOK

"Of course he is, the man can't see the forest for the trees in front of him! He is too afraid to stand up to his best buddies in his caucus who don't like Randy's grass root honesty. Randy doesn't want to play along with their game, so lets get rid of him."

PERTH'S CONLON FARM TENNIS COURTS TO GET SOME LOVE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metro land.com Two of the tennis courts at Conlon Farm will be getting some resurfacing work now that a contractor has been chosen for the project. "It will be this year," promised community services director Shannon Baillon during a presentation to Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, March 5. "But I want to have that discussion with the contractor." Staff are recommending that Benning Construction (1986) Ltd. Be awarded the contract to resurface tennis courts one and two. This project will include, according to Baillon's staff report: • Removal of the existing asphalt surface; • Replacement with the required base, asphalt, and

acrylic layers; • New net post holes and posts; and, • Court and line painting, including tennis and pickleball lines. The deadline for bids on the project was on Feb. 25, and Benning came in as the lowest bidder. Benning's bid was for $120,950, while the budget for the whole project was $150,000. She estimated a possible August construction time frame.

MASONS SEEK HOME FOR CHILD FIND EVENT Perth's Masonic Lodge may have to find another location for its upcoming Ch.I.P. program. The Masons had hoped to use the provincial offences court at Perth Town Hall on Saturday, April 27, during the Festival of the Maples, for its annual child identification program.

During that time, volunteer masons fingerprint children, take their photograph, record their voice, and get other identifying information, to create an identification record for parents to use if their child ever goes missing or is abducted. "I appreciate what they are doing," said Mayor John Fenik during Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, March 5. But he was concerned that "there is a cost to secure the building," which is normally closed on the weekend. One councillor, who was not aware of the program, wondered aloud what the program was about, but Fenik jumped in to explain what the program was not: "I'd be a little bit concerned with embedding children with (micro) chips!" he joked. On a more serious note, it was suggested to the Masons that they could use the Crystal Palace that weekend, or take up a stall along Gore Street East.

OPINION

LET US RELEASE THE PATIO FROM ITS ICY PRISON STEPHANIE GRAY IS ANXIOUS TO ENJOY HER OUTDOOR SPACE STEPHANIE GRAY Column

As I write this, it is officially "spring." The temperature is hovering around zero, and although I am still shuffling across patches of ice as I navigate my way to various locations, there are many muddy patches (which raises a whole bunch of other issues, but that's OK). I am ready to put away the lace-up boots with the good treads for the ice. And the mitts. The forecast for today calls for rain followed by five to 10 centimetres of

snow overnight. The kids are already talking about a snow day. I think Mother Nature is having a giant temper tantrum and winter keeps coming back to yell, "And another thing!" before giving us another blast. On Facebook, a "memory" appeared from this time three years ago showing my patio up and running. Not even close this year. Regular readers may recall I have a bit of an obsession with my patio. It doesn't get a lot of sun at this time of year, so it is currently still quite dramatically ensconced in ice and snow. Man, am I ever ready to spend some time on that patio. And so I shall. I'm pretty sure that I will be donning my ice cleats (which are life changing, I must say) and venturing

out there this weekend with my chopper and some boiling water to try to release my patio from winter's icy hold. I might even stand there, shaking my fist to the sky, and holler "Damn you, winter!" or other such things to amuse my neighbours. Yes, ladies and gentleman, that is the level of patience I currently have. None. It is gone. There's another way to look at it, though. It is time outside. And it will be some exercise. My arms will be sore from chopping and it will be a feat to keep my balance on that ice. Generally, I am OK with winter (until it lingers), but I must say it's not as much fun as it used to be. I used to like to walk and run in the winter - it seemed like more exercise to negotiate snowbanks and ice patches and puddles, and it isn't as stin-

kin' hot as the summer. I also like to snowshoe. Wonky knees have kept me from negotiating the snowy terrain as much as I used to. It's times like this that I have a little bit of envy for folks who have property in the country. I know I would spend more time wandering aimlessly through quiet woods if they were right in my backyard. Sometimes I might arrange to get purposely lost in them. There are some great advantages to being a townie. One of the big things is that when the power goes

off, we still have running water and can flush the toilet. Having access to forests and lakes, though, is not on that list. Although they aren't really all that far away, the prospect of driving to get there can kill the spontaneity. This is why the patio, and the garden, need to be liberated from their icy prison - and soon. For me. Selfish, I know. Maybe by the time you read this it will be an entirely different story. Maybe the forecast was wrong and the snow didn't come. Maybe spring actually

made an appearance for real and the ice is practically gone and I didn't have to work so hard chopping it. Maybe we've moved from complaining about "the winter that never ended" to "the spring that got too hot too soon." Whatever. I'll be on the patio if you need me. One way or another. Stephanie Gray is a word girl, project manager and college teacher who makes up words, has petulant body parts and obsesses about her patio. sjgray@bell.net.

PERTH BLUE WINGS ARE CCHL2 RICHARDSON CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It was a four-game sweep for the Perth Blue Wings Sunday as they made a passionate comeback in front of 400 fans Sunday in Carleton Place to win the CCHL2 Richardson Conference in overtime, 5-4. It's the second time for the title in the four years since this new league formed. "It feels great," said Michael McLean, the team's head coach. "I am especially happy for our coaches, volunteers and fans. It's been a fun and hard ride and we will continue to work hard until the very end." The team's goal has been to win 12 playoff games - they've won eight so far, and their next series is the CCHL2 finals against the Ottawa Jr. Canadians

or the Casselman Vikings who are currently battling it out for the Martin Division championship. "The hardest four games are in front of us," said McLean, who was especially pleased with the Blue Wings Sunday when they showed "great character" with the big comeback, after being down 4-1. "Our team is relentless and never gives up." The comeback started with Jonathan Peacock and his outstanding play in the third period, noted the coach. "He locked the door and never allowed another goal against." The team's leaders stepped up and showed great tenacity, scoring while short-handed and down two men, McLean said. Regardless of some notso-stellar officiating, McLean noted, the team stuck to the task and got

Penalty killing (PK) efforts from Tyler Murphy, Jordan Currie, Nathan MacKechnie, Jacob Steege, Matthew O’Brien, Jacob Weedmark, Cameron Brown and Vinny Quattrocchi were key to this game’s come-from-behind win. "We killed those minutes off and then closed out the series with a great shot

and goal from 17-year-old Ryan Bonfield." McLean said his players have made the commitment to do what it takes in the playoffs to win - blocking shots, boxing out in front of the net, they have mental discipline, are playing 200 feet, finishing checks and winning faceoffs. "We are getting 'championship effort' from our entire team," he said.

"Players like Nick Andre and Dylan Sharpley are working hard, doing their job and helping the team win. This just shows the importance of 'specialty teams' in today's game." McLean said you can win with good penalty killing and a solid power play, which has been deadly I this series. "Without this ability, the game would have been over." The Blue Wings have

outworked other teams on the PK and have had good production from Ty Power, Mack Miller, James Redmond, Sam Wilson, Corey Symington and Trent Harris. "When Carleton Place took bad penalties, we made them pay," he said. Now it is on to the Barkley Cup final, a place where this team was four years ago and lost in five games to the Vikings. "This is a completely new group of players and another opportunity to bring a championship to the Town of Perth," McLean said, as he doesn't think it will matter who they play in the finals. "Both Ottawa and Casselman dominated our league this year," he said. "Both teams have no weaknesses and are both veteran built teams. We will be a huge underdog in the finals, and that's OK with us."

FENIK SEEKS NEW CELLPHONE FROM TOWN, PLUS TEXTING POWERS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Mayor John Fenik is asking for his own, town hall-issued cellphone to conduct his elected duties. Speaking at Perth town council's committee of the whole meeting on Tues. March 5, Fenik said that, following discussions with the town clerk, and after a general warning from Deputy Mayor Ed McPerson last month to all council

members to restrict council-related communications to council-issued devices, Fenik admitted that "in the past, I've used my personal cellphone for town business." However, because of changes to Freedom of Information requests, and changes to integrity commissioner legislation, it has been stressed that municipal politicians must "keep their political life very separate from their personal life," Fenik said.

As such, "I'd like a town (issued) phone to do my business as mayor (on)," he said. However, there was a snag - "if you've got a town phone, you can't text," which is a problem for him. As a member of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital board, those board members "text all the time." He added that he also texts with members of the media. "You can send five or six texts and clear up a matter

quickly," said Fenik. Currently, only fire chief Trevor Choffe has a town-issued phone that allows texting. Fenik also said that he wanted council to consider giving his phone a free long-distance plan, in case he needs to take a call from MPP Randy Hillier's office in Toronto. Fenik issued his own advice for other members of council when it comes to social media: If you post anything to social media,

and think it will remain private, "it absolutely is not," private. "Consider that it's in public view." Town clerk Lauren Walton told Fenik that "the (preferred) electronic mode of communication is email and email is backed up," she said. "That's to protect us. If it (the communication) was done by text, there is no proof of it, because it's not backed up." Fenik said that he would "never make a permanent

promise by text," and added that, "I'll use the texting option in a responsible manner. I won't accept a town phone without a texting option." Council heard that the $56/month cellphone bill would come out of the town's governance budget. "I'm kind of embarrassed to be spending so much time on this," he said, shortly before the motion was passed. It goes before the full council for a final decision on Tues March 26.

The 2019 championship team from the Perth Curling Club was comprised of lead Max Wright, second Spencer Scriver, third David Hill and skip Isabelle Roberts. But as we have often seen in curling, that draw for the extra point came up short, giving Perth a 3-2 victory and the championship. many of the games were extremely close, often coming down to the last shot. At the championships, the Perth team began the day with a thrilling game against Winchester. After making a clutch draw to force an extra end, they stole a point to win the game 3-2. In the semifinals, the team got off to a commanding 5-0 lead over the Granite Curling Club of Ottawa. He is very aware of his job within the team and helps keep everyone loose and smiling. Spencer embraced a new role by playing second. Normally a skip, he took his brushing skills to a new level and really helped to make a lot of shots. He also used his skipping experience to offer helpful advice on strategy and broom placement. David has been a takeout expert, but this year has really embraced the

more delicate shots. He made some great draws behind guards to score points and had one of his signature double takeouts in the championship game to get the team out of trouble. Isabelle found her draw weight early on in the day and made great shots when needed the most. She handled the pressure very well and utilized the entire team to their best. What was most impressive was how they worked together as a team. They understand and trust each player's abilities and really work together on every shot. In every situation where a shot had to be made, they worked together to get it done. Ultimately,

PERTH FITNESS CHALLENGE RAISES FUNDS FOR LANARK COUNTY INTERVAL HOUSE LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Lisa Hawkey and three of her colleagues are banding together in hopes of raising funds for the Lanark County Interval House. The challenge will be held March 30 at the Perth pool in the common room. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. and will wrap up at 11 a.m. Hawkey is a the Perth POUND instructor. POUND is a full body cardio jam session championed by fitness rebels around the world. Participants use drumsticks during the workout. "We wanted to support Interval House as they are celebrating their 40th year. It seemed fitting for 30 women to participate in an event requiring physical strength and endurance (30 Strong) in recognition of the physical, mental and emotional strength women and children demonstrate when leaving abu-

...going the

sive situations." There are just eight spots left for the fitness challenge. Women will be led through four 30-minute fitness sessions taught by Hawkey, Pam Grimm Cupak, Jesse Swain and April Fraser. "It's the hope that we are able to raise money so Interval House can purchase an accessible stove for their clients to use while staying there." Brianne Luckasavitch is the public education coordinator, family court support worker, and sexual assault domestic violence advisory committee coordinator for the LCIH. She said, "Lanark County Interval House is very thankful for our ongoing community kindness. Lisa and the folks from POUND Perth kindly reached out to offer their support in December and we are excited to see the results from all their efforts on March 30. The shelter has been in need of an accessible

stove and the approximate value is $1,500. Once again, we put out the ask and were greeted with support and kindness. The stove will be purchased at our local RONA Cashway. " Hawkey wants to inspire women to work on their physical strength, as well as their spiritual strength and mental health. She said the women who find shelter at Interval House are using all their courage and strength to leave a domestic violence situation. Participants in the fitness challenge - sorry no guys this time - will be taken through the paces of interval training with Grimm Cupak called tabata; a cardio dance party with Fraser and yoga will finish the session with Swain. There are a limited number of spaces left for this challenge. For more information, or to register, contact Hawkey at 613-340-8830.

Sunday, March 31, at 7 p.m. sees Nashville treasure, singer/songwriter David Olney return to the Perth Tea Room (Perth Restaurant) for a Listening Room Series show, this time raising funds for His House the Perth Hub. We welcome Olney's return as his show's always sell out, which isn't surprising considering his pedigree, having Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury, Slaid Cleaves and Wailin' Jennys all record his music. Olney will be promoting his latest album entitled This Side Or The Other, produced by Juno Award winner Steve Dawson. Olney is a perfect fit for our series. His natural humbleness and love of sharing the depths of his soul to those who hang onto every

word, as our crowd does, makes it a great match. Toronto's Exclaim Magazine describes beautifully - " ... There's a lived-in authenticity to (David Olney's) voice that is beyond so many of the young pretenders around these days. Beneath the gruff exterior lies a big heart capable of tenderness ... he is the real deal." Another quote from Olney's promo info quite accurately describes: "David Olney doesn't change his appearance; he changes reality's appearance. He changes the room and the way we feel inside the room. He changes hearts, minds and moods, like the rest of us change bed sheets, only without the hassle of ill-fitted corners. His songs are marvels of surprise and delight." You will love him. Brock Zeman and his sidekick Blair Michael Hogan will open for him.

GET THE FACTS ABOUT RADON APRIL 1 AT PERTH POOL Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada. Testing your home for elevated radon gas levels is the only way to know for sure if you should be taking steps to reduce your exposure. Area residents are invited to "Get the Facts on Radon" this Monday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the Perth and District Indoor Pool. Learn about this gas, how to test for it, and how to protect your family at this free presentation. Radon is an invisible, odourless gas that can accumulate in people's homes. Elevated radon

levels have been detected in homes in every region of Canada; the only way to know for sure is to test for it. It doesn't matter if your house is old or new, tightly sealed or drafty, with a basement or not. Fortunately, there are simple meters available to test for radon and proven, reasonably priced methods to address it. Guest speakers at this event with be Mainul Husain, Health Canada regional radiation specialist, and Bob Wood, a radiation mitigation specialist with Mr. Radon. A representative for the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Dis-

trict Unit will also be on hand. Admission is free and all are welcome. There will be plenty of time for questions following the presentations. Attendees will have the opportunity to win a Radonova longterm home radon test kit with lab fees included. The Perth community pool is located at 3 Sunset Blvd. The evening is organized by the Otty Lake Association primarily for its members, but will be of interest to any home or cottage owner. Please email ola@ottylakeassociation.ca if you require further information.

ANALYSIS

RESIDENTS SHOW PRIDE IN THE VALLEY Continued from page 4

never felt threatened. Maybe I was nervous about it in my teens. But I own a business with my husband, I have an adopted kid. I've never felt scared in my community." Perkins said that the aim of Smiths Falls Pride is to invite "a little bit more understanding" and to "make people a little bit more aware that there are LGBTQ people in the community." It appears that some naysayers remain, but their voices are perhaps not as strong as in the past. Rev. Russell Wardell of Trinity-St. Andrew's United Church in Renfrew told the Mercury in October that there was initially some resistance within the church community to becoming an affirming ministry. "Of course as we had the

conversation over the years there were those who weren't certain of the need," he said, noting much of the resistance came from those who thought the issue had been overcome and equality has been reached. "Historically there has been a bit of an urban/rural divide," Wardell continued. "There are some in the LGBTQ2+ community who grew up in this community and moved away who have written to us and said this is really important to them." Jill Holroyd is mother to a transgender child and a Pembroke native, who recently moved her family back to her hometown

from Toronto. She has since assumed an active role in the Renfrew County Pflag organization. "So far I've found Pembroke to be a very accepting and supportive community for LGBTQ people," she says. "The level of homophobia and transphobia is no worse than it is in a big city. I think that's a misconception." What's her take on the recent rural Pride event trend? "I see a few factors at play," she says. "One is a growing acceptance for LGBTQ people, driven by more visibility and awareness. People who are LGBTQ feel safer to come

out to these events, and their family, friends and allies understand the importance of showing up for them." However, she adds that it's still much easier for transgender youth to find resources and people they can relate to in big cities. "As a teenager, my child was able to find other nonbinary, transgender friends, and that made a world of difference. And there's more anonymity. In smaller towns, where everyone knows everyone else, it can be more difficult to come out." Whether the apparent increase in acceptance and inclusivity is new to these towns or simply more visible, one thing is for sure: the support means a lot to the area's rural LGBTQ population and their allies. "Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging and respect, and to be accepted

Paulina Hrebacka/Metroland The inaugural Smiths Falls Pride Parade was a huge success on Saturday, Aug. 18. Hundreds of participants walked the parade route from town hall to Centennial Park, where a potluck dinner and dance took place. "By celebrating and raising the visibility of a community that has been

marginalized for so long, Pride events send a message that you can be who you are, and you're not alone."

OPINION

GRACELAND PILGRIMAGE FULFILLED LONGTIME WISH JEFF MAGUIRE GIVES GRACELAND TWO THUMBS DOWN FOR COMMERCIALISM JEFF MAGUIRE Column

In his Grammy-winning 1986 song "Graceland," popular American singersongwriter Paul Simon reveals his thoughts during a road trip to the home of legendary entertainer Elvis Presley in Memphis, Tennessee. In the lyrics, Simon states, "For reasons I cannot explain there's some part of me wants to see Graceland." Even though I can't list myself as a dedicated fan of Elvis Aaron Presley, I have always appreciated his tremendous talent and the major impact he had on the world of entertainment.

Not only did Elvis earn the title "King of Rock and Roll," but his musical talent crossed many genres; he was also a very credible actor, appearing in 31 movies. There's no question that he is one of the cultural icons of the 20th century! Like Paul Simon, my wife Kathleen and I have long been drawn to Graceland. We have visited Tennessee many times over the years, and have a number of friends in the growing Nashville suburb of Franklin. We had harboured a longtime wish to see Memphis, but for whatever reasons, we had not travelled there - until this month, that is! A catalyst for our visit to west Tennessee was the

opportunity to go there in the company of our good friends from England, Martin and Wendy Ireton. They journeyed from their home in West Yorkshire to spend 10 days with us, mainly in Nashville and area. Like us, they had long wanted to see Elvis' beloved mansion. If you are a music fan, there are no better places to visit than Nashville and Memphis. Both cities are at the heart of the industry! Still, it was Graceland that was at the top of our list of things to do in Memphis. When Elvis purchased the mansion and surrounding 14-acre property in March 1957 (for $102,500) it was in a rural setting - urban sprawl has since surrounded it in commercial and residential development. Graceland is on the east side of Tennessee State

Highway 51, along a stretch of roadway now dubbed "Elvis Presley Boulevard." Since his untimely death, in 1977 at the tender age of 42, Graceland has been owned by his surviving family; his daughter and only child Lisa Marie Presley inherited it in 1993 when she turned 25. We were impressed by the mansion itself, which continues to have the feel of the 1960s-style residence Elvis developed and loved so much. The original 10,266-square-foot Colonial Revival style mansion was built in 1939 for a Memphis socialite and her husband. The expansive surrounding property includes the "Meditation Garden," containing the graves of the singer, his parents Vernon and Gladys and his grandmother Minnie Presley. The house tour is limit-

ed to the main floor and basement of the mansion. There is original memorabilia, including many family photographs throughout the house and outbuildings. Also on the Graceland estate is a separate structure containing Vernon Presley's office, the racquetball building (Elvis was heavily into the sport at one time) and of course, the family cemetery. Graceland itself is puny compared to the vast commercial complex across the boulevard, which is owned and operated by a separate company. So, do we recommend

the Graceland experience? The house, property and family cemetery are definitely worth seeing. As for the commercial complex nearby, I give that aspect of the visit two thumbs down. Overdone in my opinion, but I'm sure Elvis' ardent fans will beg to differ. It is all in the eye of the beholder, after all! Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. SOUTER John Randell

On Thursday, March 21, 2019, John lost a brave fight against cancer. He died at home, since that was his wish, after a fulfilling life of service to his family, his teaching career and his community. John was born and raised in Johnshaven, a fishing village of 700 souls on the north-east coast of Scotland. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen, earning an M.A. in Geography. After being interviewed in Edinburgh Scotland John arrived here in 1968, to begin his career teaching Geography at Almonte District High School and his life in Canada.. In 1973, John married a fellow teacher, Mary Lou Murphy, and together they made a formidable team, both within the school environment and the community. In 1980 they coordinated the Almonte Centennial Celebrations a nine day festival featuring more than 75 events. Afterwards, John was elected to the first of three terms on Almonte Town Council where, as EDC Chairman, he negotiated the initial development of the town’s industrial park. He also dedicated hundreds of hours as the founder and first Chair of the North Lanark Highland Games, subsequently serving as a Director for more than 30 years. John has been active in many community organizations, but is perhaps most proud of his time as Executive member and President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 240. John oversaw multiple renovation projects to its heritage building, collected the stories of veterans which he shared in a column for the Almonte Gazette, and partnered with ADHS staff and students to develop a WW II memory project which led to the publication of the book, “Age Shall Not Weary Them”. John and Mary Lou were awarded the 2008 Mississippi Mills Cultural Volunteerism Award for their work on behalf of the community. John was a proud and loving father to his sons and daughters-in-law – Dugald and Jodi, David and Valeria. DESPITE LACK OF FUNDS, BIRTHDAYS WERE SPECIAL OCCASIONS FATHER HAD TO DIG DEEP FOR SISTER AUDREY, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

My sister Audrey's birthday was coming up, and even though there never was much celebration, like having a party and asking friends over, Mother always tried to make the supper meal special. That meant a birthday cake of course, and it also meant little presents. One dime would be buried in the batter before the cake went into the oven. Since there were five of us children, Mother made sure there would be five little presents in the cake, and it was assumed Audrey would get the ten-cent piece. I watched Mother put the cake together in the big brown bowl, and the little presents were no surprise. They were what came in a five-cent box of Cracker Jacks, accumulated over a long time, and put away especially to be put into the birthday cake. They were wrapped in small pieces of waxed paper, as was the dime. I watched mother pour the cake batter into two cake tins, and then, with a spoon, sink the little wrapped presents and the dime deep into the cake. For birthdays, and spe-

cial occasions, we always had chocolate cake. This was a luxury, because a can of Watkins cocoa was not cheap! And as the cake cooled on the bake table, I could smell the richness of the chocolate, and many times I went close just so I could get a good whiff of it. We always had pork chops on Audrey's birthday, since they were her favourite, and Mother would dip them in eggs and bread crumbs before frying them, just the way Audrey liked them. Finally, the table was cleared of the vegetable bowls, the meat platter, and dishes of pickles. The cake was brought from the bake table and set before Audrey who would have the honour of cutting it and blowing out the one candle that was used for everyone's birthday. Then Audrey cut into the cake, big wedges, and slapped them on the small plates in front of her. I could see bits and pieces of wax paper, and Audrey made sure that the four brothers and I each got a piece with a little prize in it. She was some fair, was my sister Audrey! But where was the dime? Mother didn't have to tell us that whoever got it had to hand it over to Audrey. We knew it would be hers. After all, it was her birth-

day. Father was the last to finish. He shoved his plate away, and as plain as the nose on your face, there in front of him was a small bit of crumbled wax paper and the ten-cent coin. "That should just about buy me a small plug of tobacco at Briscoe's," he said, moving it around under his finger. He picked it up, got off his chair and headed for the rocker in front of the Findlay Oval tucking the dime into his overall pocket. Mother just stared at him, and my sister, who would never defy either parent, slowly began to get ready to wash the dishes. When Father got to the rocker, he dug into his overall pocket, and said, "Here Audrey, I think this is yours." Audrey reached out and Father dropped the dime, and then another dime, into her hand. Two whole dimes! Only one was in the cake, and as luck would have it, it appeared in Father's wedge. It didn't take Audrey long to tear upstairs and tie both dimes in the corner of her hanky, adding them to the small collection of coins she had been saving for a very long time. Father would have to go into the sugar bowl in the cupboard to get a few coins to buy his next plug of tobacco. Interested in an electronic version of Mary's books? HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Submitted/Mike Seed Mike Seed has been named the CCHL2's GM of the Year. The Westport Rideaus' GM has been with the organization since 1995.

MIKE SEED NAMED CCHL2 GM OF THE YEAR Michael Seed - best known as Bundy around the rink - has been named the Central Canada Hockey League Tier 2's GM of the Year. The league announced Feb. 18 that the longtime Westport Rideaus' general manager earned this season's award. A Frankville native, Seed is finishing his 23rd season in the Rideaus' organization; he started as assistant coach of the Rideaus under former head coach Jeff Seed in the 1995-96 season. Just five years later, he took over as the GM and has been there ever since - amassing 484 wins, five first-place finishes in the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League and one appearance in the finals. The first-time winner of this award, Seed has helped the Rideaus to their 20th consecutive appearance in the playoffs. Team owner Joshua Filoso, who also owns the Smiths Falls Bears, said that Seed is well-deserving of this award. "He has not only managed this team to the playoffs, but he has coached the Rideaus to a top playoff contender," Filoso said. "The Smiths Falls Bears and Westport Rideaus could not be happier for Mike." Filoso added that 'Bundy' is a first class GM and "overall first-class guy. He's well known around the league and around the hockey world." In Westport, Seed is not only the GM, but he is the go-to man for everything the Rideaus do - and he does a fantastic job, Filoso said.
