BUILD A MOUNTAIN OF FOOD KICKS OFF 12TH SEASON IN CARLETON PLACE, ALMONTE LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Over 23,000 pounds of food were collected, and more than $4,400 in cash was raised for the Hunger Stop in Carleton Place Saturday, Nov. 10 during the kickoff of the Build a Mountain of Food campaign. The Hinton Auto Group Build a Mountain of Food started its six-Saturday road tour Nov. 10 on the right foot. This year's campaign is dedicated to Ed Chenard, a co-founder of the food drive who died in October this year. "Ed was such a positive

community guy," said Hugh Colton, who has been steering this drive from the beginning. "It didn't matter if he was singing in the choir, or collecting food ... this year, this (food drive) is in honour of Ed." Colton said it's always an important first stop on the schedule when they visit Carleton Place and Almonte. Money donated and food collected is taken to the Hunger Stop, Lanark County Food Bank, which serves Mississippi Mills, Carleton Place, Beckwith and surrounding areas. The four participating grocery stores include Patrice's Your Independent Grocer, FreshCo, Giant Ti-

ger and Mitchell's Your Independent Grocer. During the first stop on Saturday, 23,568 pounds of food were collected along with $4,489.81. "It's really important for the first stop to come to the plate, and they sure did," Colton said. "The grocery stores, and school campaigns were great. To Carleton Place and Almonte, way to go! Thank you very much for a great start." This Saturday, the BAM tour stops in Lanark and Perth, with donations going to The Good Food Bank at The Table Community Food Centre, and the Lanark Highlands Food Pantry. PEACE RINGS TRUE IN COMMUNITY Continued from front

gion-organized "Bells of Peace" event at the Crystal Palace on the evening of Remembrance Day 2018. "One hundred years ago, relief and joy swept our country." At exactly 5 p.m. this past Sunday, the church bells again rang out, to mark the armistice's centenary. "With each peeling of the bell, we will remember them," said Boyce. According to the Canadian War Museum, about 61,000 Canadians were killed during the 1914-1918 conflict, with another 172,000 wounded. Newfoundland, then still a British colony, saw 1,305 killed, and several thousand wounded. "This town, Perth, is rich in military history," said Stacey Niceliu, the sergeant-at-arms of the Perth Legion. The Lanark and Renfrew Scottish regiment was headquartered in Perth from the time of the First World War until the 1960s. Along with local

losses suffered during both world wars and the Korean War, Niceliu urged the audience to remember that "as each bell tolls here this evening, we will remember the death and destruction," of war. He told the crowd to remember "the joy (and) the promise of peace brought to our souls," that late autumn day in 1918. He added that holding the ceremony at the Crystal Palace was fitting for several reasons. Firstly, it is just steps away from town hall, where citizens celebrated the war's end in 1918, but also, because one of the fallen from that war used to live in a house that was then located on the land where the Crystal Palace is now located. Town crier Brent McLaren then read aloud a proclamation, entitled Battle's Over: A Cry for Peace Around the World, which, he said, "all criers are doing the same cry," the world over. "It's making its way around the world."

Moments before the bells began to ring at 5 p.m., McLaren's voice was carried by the cold wind blowing off of the Tay Basin, as he urged everyone to take part in "remembering those brave men and women of our history," and ending with the words, "The battle's over/May all division cease. The battle's over/And to our world, peace." Meanwhile, up the hill at St. James the Apostle Anglican Church, Canon David Smith, David Robinson, and Peter Fischl, were readying themselves for the appointed hour, with the trio frequently checking Robinson's gold watch to keep make sure that the bell tolled at exactly the 5 p.m. hour. With a 15-second warning, then the go-signal from Robinson, Smith yanked on the long rope leading up into the bell tower, and the first bell tolled out over the town, cutting through the evening shade, literally echoing the past, 100 years before.

An interesting talk on adapting to our changing times, will be held at the Lanark Library on Nov. 15, hosted by Mike Nickerson of Lanark Highlands. The meeting time will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at the library located at 75 George Street in Lanark. A bright future awaits when we accept the fundamental change taking place in our relationship with the Earth. The change is that humankind has grown from an insignificant presence on a seemingly unlimited planet, to an enormous presence which threatens the stability of planetary life. This change requires an equally fundamental change in how we manage ourselves. No longer can a childish "anything goes" attitude guide society. We need, as societies, to accept adult responsibility. Humankind's maturity first became obvious in the 1970s. Today, our lack of acceptance is seen in polluted air and water, depleting resources, changing climate and growing inequality. As individuals, we are lucky that our growth automatically ends when we reach physical maturity. Once the challenges of growing-up are behind us, wonderful possibilities lay ahead. We develop in terms of experience, understanding, relationships, skills, appreciation and opportunities to be appreciated by others. A similar future awaits us as societies when the means by which we provide for each other, the economy, is adjusted to accommodate our new maturity. The discussion at Lanark Library will be encouraged by Mike Nickerson. Nickerson is a story teller who has studied, written and talked about the transformation toward sustainability for more than 40 years. His latest book "Life, Money and Illusion; Living on Earth as if we want to stay" is available at local book stores, through his website: SustainWellBeing.net or at the meeting in Lanark on the 15th.

SEASON OF GIVING While it's important to give back when we can throughout the year, the generosity of community is particularly high during the holiday season. Non-profit organizations depend on support at Christmas to last them throughout the year. One of the most recognizable charitable events over the holidays is the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign. Not only do the kettles build awareness of the Salvation Army's efforts, but they also raise critical funds to provide social services, food bank assistance, emergency disaster services, as well as housing and shelter to those in need. The kettle campaign began more than 100 years ago in 1891, as a way for Salvation Army officer Captain Joseph McFee to provide a free Christmas dinner to people in San Francisco. Fast forward to today, where there are 2,000 kettle locations across Canada. The Kemptville Salvation Army kicked off its 16th annual six-week kettle campaign on Nov. 14, which supports the organization for entire year of programming. Six locations will be set up with kettles and for those who don't keep a lot of cash on them, it's easier than ever to donate at the kettles. Volunteers will be equipped with point of sale terminals to allow for debit and credit card transactions. This Friday (Nov. 16), campaigns in Smiths Falls, Carleton Place and Almonte will roll out. The Settlers Ridge Centre will help launch the Smiths Falls campaign, while Patrice's Your Independent Grocer in Almonte and Mitchell's Your Independent Grocer in Carleton Place will kick off the festivities in those communities. Volunteers are still needed to ring the bells at the kettle locations throughout Lanark, Leeds and Grenville. If you're interested in spreading some Christmas cheer, contact your local Salvation Army. Another local holiday tradition, the Hinton Auto Group's Build a Mountain of Food, kicked off its community food blitzes in Carleton Place and Almonte Nov. 10. The annual campaign raises funds for food banks in Carleton Place, Perth, Smiths Falls, Lanark, Westport, Elgin, Portland, Merrickville, Athens and Delta. Food blitzes will take place every Saturday from Nov. 10 to Dec. 15 and the campaign will also be stationed at CP Holiday Train stops in Smiths Falls and Perth, as well as local Santa Claus parades. There's also the United Way Lanark County, which launched its annual campaign Oct. 1, that continues through to January. The United Way, which funds programs and initiatives in focus areas on children and youth, poverty and strong communities, is hoping to raise $10 for each person in Lanark County and Smiths Falls.

After the loss of the University of Guelph's Kemptville campus in recent years, Algonquin College has picked up the ball and is now running into the agricultural education business at its Perth campus - just don't expect to see cows grazing by the side of Craig Street. The campus will now be home to two new programs starting in the fall of 2019 - a two-year Ontario college diploma in business agriculture, and a one-year Ontario college certificate in business fundamentals. "We would not be talking about this program if Kemptville College was still up and running," said professor Martin Savard during an interview in the office of Perth college campus dean Christopher Hahn, on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 6. "We are trying to fill the gap." Not only are they filling a gap, but they are picking off top Kemptville College talent in filling their teaching roster. "We need something in eastern Ontario," said Savard. "We've got a good roster of teachers. Sev-

eral of them are from the old Kemptville College." In fact, Algonquin is getting "great support from Kemptville alumni," said Sara Munroe, academic chair of the Perth campus. But he stresses that "there is a future; it's still a huge industry. It is a huge contributor to the economy," he said. Part of the change, however, lies in the fact that "agricultural output is growing, [but] the number of farms is decreasing." Savard pointed to a study by the Ontario Agricultural College, in Alfred, Ont., which found that there are four jobs for every one agricultural graduate in Ontario, down on the farm and off. The agricultural program comes with a paid co-operative education program in the summer, since "we had agricultural companies and farmers [who] are interested in hiring our students," said Savard. The dolls are in memory of Canadian Forces Master Cpl. Mark Isfeld ("Izzy"), who was killed serving on a peacekeeping tour of Croatia in 1994. Mark would distribute candy and socks knitted by his mother, Carol Isfeld, to children while on patrol. He was also a photographer, who managed to capture a photo of a little girl's doll atop a pile of rubble that was once her home. The photo inspired Carol to start knitting dolls that Mark could give out to children on his tours. "They were so small, he could put them in his pocket," explains Judy Hands, public relations officer for the SLDWI. "And if he saw an unfortunate child who

Like thunder, we could hear heavy footsteps on the wood platform outside the door of the Northcote School. We heard boots being pounded against the door frame, shaking off the freshly fallen snow, and without a rap, the door swung wide and in walked a total stranger dressed

like a member of Parliament. He nodded at Miss Crosby who had stood up so quickly, her chair tumbled to the floor behind her, and I could see a look of panic come over her face as she shifted papers on an already spic-and-span desk. Here was the newly appointed inspector, a figure to be reckoned with for sure! We didn't have to be told to stand; that was automatic whenever anyone came through the door of the school. We could tell from the look on Miss Crosby's face this gentleman had tremendous power in his hands. He was there to see that the Northcote School was run properly, and according to the standards

set out by the board, the pupils were being taught in the basics and beyond, and we were respectful and obedient. I said a silent prayer that my brother Emerson and Cecil would be on their best behaviour. He pounded up to Miss Crosby's desk, nodded at us standing like stone pillars, and in a voice that could be heard in Arnprior, Ont., ordered us to take our seats. As we always did when seated in front of a visitor, our hands were clasped in front of us on our desks, and our feet planted firmly on the floor. Miss Crosby's eyes darted over us to make sure we were all doing what was expected of us. Then, the new inspector came down from the front

GUATEMALA STOVE PROJECT HOSTS CLASSIC ROCK EVENT SATURDAY AT CIVITAN On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Guatemala Stove Project (GSP) is hosting a fundraising dance featuring the classic rock band, The Lucky B's. This annual fundraiser will feature a silent auction of unique items crafted by local artisans or donated by local businesses. The GSP is a volunteerbased organization is continuing its efforts to raise funds for the construction of masonry cook stoves for impoverished, rural Maya families. Over 6,500 stoves have been built so far, creating a lasting legacy for rural families in the western highlands of Guatemala. A single stove extends the lives of each family

member in a household by 10 to 15 years and reduces the amount of firewood needed by half which helps to preserve the country's precious forests. The GSP also supports sustainable-development projects in over a dozen communities and issues microloans to Indigenous women to start small businesses that will help lift them out of poverty. The project recognizes the importance of education in creating opportunity and hope for the future. It provides scholarships to a number of students who would otherwise not have this opportunity. Each month, they meet at somebody's home, rotating among the group's 23 members. "It's about connection and community and people coming together to do good," Hands says. She notes, however, that the members are getting

older, and it's become increasingly difficult to get young women to join and carry on the tradition. "There's a lot we do that people don't realize. It shouldn't be a lost cause. He nodded to Miss Crosby, and headed for the door, leaving behind melted snow wherever he had walked. If that had been one of us, Miss Crosby would have had us clean up the mess immediately. She righted her chair, fell into it, and said we could all go out to recess even though we had scarcely done a whit of school work. She looked like she had done a hard day's work.

We had often heard how the inspector was to be feared by the teacher. For the life of me, I couldn't think of one thing he could find wrong with Miss Crosby. I loved her dearly. But her destiny was in his hands and it was said a word from him, and a teacher could lose her job. Her yearly salary of a few hundred dollars would be gone forever! It's year 33, and as the Lanark County CAFS/OPP Angel Tree Program enters its fourth decade there is no doubt it will continue to be a success thanks to the generosity and Christmas spirit in Lanark County and the surrounding area. This year the Lanark County Child and Family Services (CAFS) / Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Angel Tree program is starting off with between 550 and 600 angels. The "angels" assigned to trees are children directly affiliated with the Lanark County CAFS or other agencies with the goal of providing a Christmas gift to each child. The Lanark County municipal offices are participating once again, as are our community partners which include Albany, Eaton, Lanark County Administration, Perth Town Hall, Perth's Great War Memorial hospital and the Carleton Place Walmart. The OPP East Region Headquarters and Provincial Communications Centre also continue to be a huge support with the internal distribution of angels to OPP employees. Volunteers are certain that this year's goal will be met as it has in past years. LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com It doesn't matter if you aren't a seasoned hiker, the Rideau Trail Association is a great place to enjoy outdoor adventures and get active. The Rideau Trail is a hiker's paradise - 387 kilometres from Kingston to Ottawa. It meanders along the rugged terrain and into beautiful villages and towns, including Perth, Smiths Falls and Merrickville. Jack Tannett is the chair of the Central club in which there are 143 members. There are three clubs, (1,147 members in total) including Kingston (297 members) and Ottawa (653 members). There are also some "nonaffiliated" members, who live outside the area. Each club organizes yearround experiences on the trail, where one can enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, cycling and paddling. "We are all volunteers with a

"We provide this positive healthy-living opportunity in the local communities for people to engage in a common purpose." Tannett just completed the entire stretch of the trail, hiked in 21 stages, and averaging 16 kilometres a day, from April to October. He has on a pair of hiking shoes, and his pants are tucked into his socks. It's not a fashion statement, but rather one to keep the ticks at bay. A backpack, jacket, hat and gloves will keep him warm against the cooler elements.

"You always wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts or jackets. And spray some deet. We want to be protected against the ticks, and once you're finished a hike, always check yourself for ticks," which haven't been too bad this year. The trail is open year round, and the clubs are always planning special gatherings each weekend. Every Wednesday, the Wednesday Wanderers are out. Hiker Mary Robinson, who has been active with the club for more than 10 years, said she enjoys the physical challenges. "I like the challenges we do - like the Frontenac Challenge where we hike the loops in Frontenac Park in September and October, or

the winter end to end challenge that we do in January and February over three years," she said. "It pushes me to maintain or attain certain fitness levels." Robinson also enjoys getting to know the area and encourages newcomers to get in on the action. "It's great to get out and hike with friends and visit places we've never been before," she said. "A lot of people don't know the area, but they learn about the nature trails. It's a great opportunity to socialize and have fun and to get outside." IN MEMORIAM: PROTECTION, PEACE, SECURITY IS TOPIC OF DISCUSSION AT PERTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING For our Nov. 15 meeting, we consider the messages from the conflicts of the 20th century and into the 21st century, and the reasons we must perpetuate remembrance of Canada's fallen. "We will remember them" is used by the Royal Canadian Legion in the Act of Remembrance for the Fallen: First World War - 60,000 (51,748 in enemy action); Second World War - 44,000; Korea - 516; Bosnia - 23; Afghanistan - 159. Of the thousands who served, but who survived, many were injured, carrying scars for life. To remember "them" is one thing, but it is quite another to try to determine what they would expect us do to attempt to ensure that like slaughters or worse would not reoccur. They would, of course, appreciate the continued formal respect that we deliver across Canada for the tremendous sacrifice, loss and damage of so many. However, as Canadians, to help

perpetuate memories for the fallen, consider the following: 1. Determine and ensure what is necessary to maintain and protect our quality of life and democratic principles. 2. Ensure that we secure our borders and country from internal and external threats 3. Contribute to world peace while ensuring our growth and prosperity There are serious challenges in a world where racial, religious and ethnic nationalism, major economic differences and demagoguery are increasing day to day. However, we cannot close ourselves from outside, as we cannot sustain our population without immigration. In this world of increasing artificial intelligence, and devastatingly powerful and destructive weaponry, what can we do? Join us to hear retired major-general Clive Addy address this topic and discuss what we might develop locally, provincially and national-

ly. The evening's discussion topic is In Memoriam: Protection, Peace, Security. In memoriam, we must do our share. Addy, our guest, has a personal history of service to Canada through his 43 years with the military, attaining the rank of major-general. In addition, he has done extensive volunteer work, much of it an extension of his military experience and defence and security matters. His volunteering extends into other areas, such as sustainable communities, architectural conservation and family counselling. Addy, born in Ottawa in 1944, followed a family tradition when he entered military life. His post-secondary education included attending Collège militaire royal de Saint Jean and Royal Military College of Canada, and École supérieure de guerre in France. He is multilingual and has lived in or travelled to 35 countries. He has been

married to his wife, Marlene, for over 50 years, has two children and two grandchildren. Other interests include sports, theatre and community life. In recognition of the program, the Perth branch of the legion will open its Hall of Remembrance. It will be available from 6 p.m. to our meeting start of 7:30. We encourage everyone to visit it. The Perth & District Historical Society is dedicated to learning about our history. The meetings are open to the public on the third Thursday of each month, at 7:30 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Legion, Perth-Upon-Tay, Branch 244, home of the Hall of Remembrance, 26 Beckwith St. E. in Perth. PERTH'S HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY MEETING WILL FEATURE HOLIDAY PLANTER IDEAS It is snowing and the outdoor gardens are beginning their long winter rest. Meanwhile, it is time for the Perth and District Horticultural Society to reflect on 2018 as well as look forward to 2019 at its annual holiday social and annual general meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Before our short annual business meeting, we share a potluck holiday meal together which begins at 6 p.m. The executive is roasting the turkeys and most of you have already offered to prepare either a main course accompaniment or a dessert. If you have not yet signed up, simply bring your offering. We will welcome the addition to the table. Any centrepieces made to decorate our tables will be raffled off at the end of the evening. Thank you for your participation! After dinner, Louise Richards will do a demonstration of Christmas planters and table decorations using mostly local materials, with not a stick of birch in sight. Louise is a Master Gardener based in

the Athens area. She has a lifetime history working with plants, beginning in England as a child helping her 'fanatical' gardening parents. Later, here in Canada, for six years she managed the garden centre at Ritchie's Feed & Seed in Brockville; she has been president of the Athens Garden and Horticultural Society, creating community gardens at the library and township building; and, not content only dealing with her own gardens, she designs and maintains others in Kingston. Her interest in floral design lead her to SweetPea's Fresh Flowers and eventually to Sylvia's Plant Place where she is currently swapping one family of gardening fanatics for another. After Louise's presentation, PDHS will have its short annual business meeting. This is a turnover year for several members of the Executive, plus our good President has reached the end of her two year term in office. Please come prepared to offer yourself or a consenting

member as a nomination for these openings. It is rewarding and congenial work, and you will be warmly welcomed by the Executive! After the annual general meeting, you will be rewarded with our annual raffle for the table centrepieces and more. Join the Perth Hort Society for its Holiday Social and annual general meeting at St Paul's United Church, 25 Gore St. W. We start early for this meeting: the D'Arcy Street side entrance doors to Fellowship Hall will open at 5:30 p.m. for setting out dinner; dinner will be served at 6 p.m.; the holiday floral demonstration will begin at 6:45 p.m., and the short annual general meeting will begin at 7:45 p.m., followed by the fun raffle. KENNEDY Rev. Barry

B.A. C.Chem, B.Th., M. Div. Rev. Barry passed away Nov. 7, 2018 in the Smiths Falls Hospital at the age of 78. He will be fondly missed by his wife Evelyn Olga Kennedy (nee Waterman). Loving and devoted father of Ruth Kennedy, Michael Kennedy, Beth Kennedy-Puckett (Richard), Wesley Kennedy (Catherine) and grand-children Sean, Caitlyn, Eva, Laura, Wesley (MacKenzie). He is predeceased by four brothers and four sisters and sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family, his many church families and friends. Rev. Kennedy will be remembered as a banker, chemist with the federal government and Minister in the United Church of Canada. Friends gathered at Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls on Monday, Nov. 12 from 1 p.m. until the time of the service to celebrate Dad’s life at 3 p.m. Private interment will take place at a later date. If desired memorial donations can be made to the Thoreau Society.

Mollie was the beloved mother of Kimberly Anne (Andrew) Ennis and Pamela Jane Majaury (Mike Kerr) and cherished grandmother of Katelyn Majaury and Brandon Ennis and step grandmother of Jade and Jared Kerr. She will be sadly missed by her brother John Donaldson, all her extended family and friends. Friends and family gathered for a service on Saturday November 10th, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St., West, Perth followed by a reception in the Blair & Son Family Centre. Wilf was also proudly involved with the Legion Poppy Drive, and the Salvation Army Kettles. He loved gardening, baking, woodworking projects, helping his community and being a grandad. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and moved many times in his young life from Canadian Air Force Base to Air Force Base with his parents before ending up in Toronto where he met Jean. Bill and Jean lived in Toronto, Elliot Lake, Wabush (Labrador) then Orillia before moving to Smith Falls for several years before residing at the Stittsville Retirement Villa in Ottawa. Bill was an avid volunteer for many organizations throughout his life, the most recent as a proud member of the Orillia Power & Sail Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Visitation was held at Lannin Funeral Home, 32 Main Street, Smiths Falls on Friday November 9th, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm. The Funeral Service will take place at St David’s Anglican Church in Orillia on Monday, November 19th at 10:30 am. The interment will take place at the St Andrew’s-St James’ Cemetery in Orillia. June 3rd, 1921 October 30th,2018 “What a journey of a life well lived.” Bruce passed away with courage and dignity surrounded by the love and support of his family at Carolina Suites, Perth on Tuesday afternoon, October 30th, 2018. He was predeceased by his parents Ogden and Gladys Winter, his wife and the love of his life Helen and two younger brothers, Frank (Terry) and Charles Winter. Bruce was the loved father and best friend to sons David (Karen) and Bob (Laurie); cherished and greatly respected “Gramps” to Scott (Brynn), Ryan, Jordan (Stephanie), Chelsea (Randy), Bailey (Damon), Jeff (Melissa), Jessie (Rob) and great grandfather of eight. He was born in Toronto. Bruce experienced the poverty of the Great Depression, was quarterback and captain of the North Toronto Collegiate football team, a decorated Flying Officer in WWII, graduate of University of Toronto, Bachelor of Science and Engineering (UofT 50). He and Helen lived in Pointe Claire, Quebec where he started a long and successful career with CIL Industries. He also lived in Mississauga, London and ultimately Perth where he resided the past 5 years. He enjoyed golf, bridge, the horse track and family vacations to Florida with the requisite snowbird months in retirement in Pompano Beach. Thanks to the staff at Carolina Court Retirement Residence, Dr. Richard Moxon, Dr. Anil Kuchinad and the Bayshore nursing staff. He would like this to be a celebration and in doing so would have recommended raising an ice filled glass of Johnny Walker Red. Jason was an intelligent, industrious, accomplished and well-spoken young man. He was an entrepreneur who owned and operated many businesses during his short life, including Rideau Meats, Butcher’s Antiques, Backyard BBQ, and many others. He attended Georgian College for Business and Accounting where he played goalie for the Georgian Grizzlies in his favourite sport ~ hockey. Jason lost his way with an addiction to alcohol and sadly ended his life by suicide on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. His family chooses to remember him in all the good times they had. Let's see if some sort of balance can be found whilst waxing rhapsodic (or whatever) about the man who happens to be President of the Excited States of America and his disturbing relationship with the press. Full disclosure (in case you haven't been following along): I tend to be somewhat fond of the media, having been a reporter myself a while back. When I saw snippets of the wild press conference following the mid-term elections last week during which Trump verbally attacked CNN's Jim Acosta,

it kind of got me rankled. (I don't think I've ever described myself as "rankled" before. It's probably a bit mild.) If you have been watching the news, you've likely seen the video showing Trump trying to verbally shut down Acosta, followed by one of the White House aides approaching the reporter and trying to grab the microphone. There has been a lot of discussion about the physical part of the exchange. When the aide grabbed at the microphone, Acosta responded by blocking her arm. "Whoa!" I said, but not necessarily for the reasons you might think (at least at first). All I could see was the age uke bunkai (technique) we had practised at

karate class the night before. It was all there - the quick sweep down the bicep, ending at the elbow, which pulls the opponent off balance. OK, well not quite all of it. The technique usually ends with a strike to the neck, but it's probably really good that didn't happen because it would have been a step too far. In my view, I saw someone make a grab at another person, who responded by blocking it. They also allegedly doctored the original video to make it look worse than it was. (Incidentally, the "doctored" video is the one I sent to my senseis. I was still OK with it. If you try to grab at someone, expect they might react.) At this point I could transition quite nicely into a rant about the importance of a free press and the growing concern about how this man inflames and emboldens his base to make awful things seem permissible, but maybe we can talk about solutions. Something I struggle with is the "can't look away from the car crash" syndrome when it comes to Trump. I try to pay enough attention to be informed because we really have to be to aware (and alarmed)

at this point, but I do want to look away. Is there a way we could all "look away?" Could the journalists still attend the press conferences and document everything, but not actually publish it? Maybe just alert the rest of us to when we need to head to the bunkers? I don't have solutions,

November is my most dreaded month. Cold that gets into your bones. Dark by 4:45 p.m. People getting cranky. While I've always just tried to 'get through' November, a friend shifted my focus last year. When taking a photography course, my friend was told by the instructor that November is a photographer's dream month. With the fallen leaves spreading across the landscape as well as a sun that settles earlier in the day, the instructor told my friend that the November light has

a yellow hue to it. And he's totally right. Since my friend passed that news along, I've noticed pockets of time throughout the day when the lighting has a yellowish hue to it and softens the view. I stop and appreciate the November Sky rather than (always) complaining about the dreary month. So, if you're suffering from the November Blues, look outside and see if you can spot the November light.

CAKES AND CRUISES It's not every day a childhood memory comes swirling back to you when you're in the middle of a courtyard in Montenegro. But it did. Hear me out before you roll your eyes (I may just be writing that sentence for my husband). My mom and I just returned from an incredible Mediterranean cruise. One of our stops was Kotor, Montenegro, which offered

incredible views. As we made our way into the old city, we came across a restaurant which included a patio featuring a glass-encased dessert selection. As we stared at the selection, my mom noted, "Hey, those look like the cakes we used to order from Mrs. Clarick." And she was absolutely right. Whether it was for an anniversary or a high school graduation, our family often ordered these incredible cakes from Mrs. Clarick. They were, delicious, fancy and included those big silver sprinkles. And her cakes were far beyond the boxed cake experience that my daughter is about to get for her own birthday. In Kotor, we ohh'd and aww'd over the cake and my mom decided to get a slice. You know - for research. After she sampled it, she said it was good, but not as a good as Mrs. Clarick. That's tough competition. Did you ever have Mrs.
