The Perse Post Academic Year 2023/2024 Term 1b Week 13

Introduction from The Principal Some of you may realise that this introduction is often a good opportunity for me to reflect and consider the week which I have experienced, the wonderful interactions I have been blessed to have and the amazing successes which the school community achieves every week.

This week I enjoyed another monthly meeting with our ever- growing Parent Teacher group to discuss future events and ways forward to develop communication, parent volunteering and interactivity. On Thursday, we introduced our Unifrog platform to Year 7's and 8’s who have become enthralled with the personality quizzes, huge breadth of opportunities to explore potential courses and knowledge gathering. This will be a continued revisit and support during form times, assemblies and PSHE. We were grateful to Dr McBee for her sharing of the future of science careers which was amazing during her Inspirational Insights talk this week. In our lower years, discussions around personal boundaries have been established with the renowned “PANTS Talk”. I also had the pleasure of our second Student Leadership meeting this week and students are working towards presenting me with a proposal for a field trip and special day with a focus on learning and community spirit and of course the Trinity Award winners and house captains were invited for a “Tea with Mr B” in which I was amazed by how they feel their successes and skills development in Drama have helped them in all walks of curricular and pastoral life. I am proud to reveal that we are trialling an increased amount of ECA’s in Term 2 including a couple of morning pilot activities and the School Cloud sign up will be ready on Tuesday. Amidst all this excitement we welcome new students and their families through the door this week. I think it is safe to say we have all earned our weekend as I very much look forward to another week of exciting opportunities ahead.

Key Stage One (Year 1-3) Feeling safe and comfortable

This week we have been learning all about body safety through our PHSE PANTS program, recognizing and naming safe adults in our lives, remembering your body belongs to you and to speak up, someone can help you if you need.

We were also treated to a wonderful assembly presented by the Year Twos, who taught everyone about what 'boundaries' are, and what to do and say if someone crosses your boundary, and how to respond if you have crossed someone's boundary.

This information was presented through scenarios that were acted out, a quiz and a catchy song to help us remember what to say if a friend crosses a boundary.

Key Stage 2 (Year 4-5) News Our pupils came together this week with a shared focus on one of our school values Respecting Our Environment and gaining insights from the inspiring journey of Greta Thunberg. The assembly, led by Ms Rosie, aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and consciousness in our young learners. The pupils started off with two class representatives from each class participating in a Kahoot quiz on the environment.

Learning about Greta Thunberg’s dedication to environmental advocacy served as a powerful example for the pupils, that ‘no-one is too small to make a difference’ , illustrating that even young voices can drive positive changes.

We would like to encourage parents to continue with discussions that promote environmental awareness at home with your child so to nurture a sense of responsibility towards our environment and empowering them to become stewards of the Earth.

Key Stage 3 (Year 6-8) News Years 6-8 were treated to a fascinating Inspirational Insights assembly this morning from Dr Megan McBee based on careers in Science.

Students heard that Dr McBee had always wanted to be a medical doctor but her path studying science took her down a different route.

We heard how hard it is to get into MIT and how she travelled over 3000miles from her home town to study there to now being the Scientific Director for Singapore MIT Alliance.

Students were engaged in the assembly, hearing about how Science is used in day to day life. They were then challenged to come up with a list of careers that does not use knowledge of Science!

Year 7 and 8 had their introduction to Unifrog this week. Whilst the platform can be used for reference writing and University applications it is also an exceptionally useful tool for those in Years 7 and 8 and allows them to explore pathways: • Complete quizzes to build a psychometric profile that links to careers and subjects • Learn about careers, subjects and progression • Find supercurricular activities like further reading, MOOCs and Webinars • Add examples of their activities and skills • View interactions that their teachers have added for them Search for opportunities: • Search for university courses all around the world, and save shortlists they can come back to • Search for vocational courses in the UK and save shortlists they can come back to • Find events related to their interests, and scholarships they are eligible for Over coming weeks Year 7 and 8 will continue to explore the many options open to them via Unifrog!

There will be an opportunity for a parents information session in coming weeks.

ART & DESIGN Year 3 pupils are exploring drawing fruits close-up.

They needed to apply proportions and the use of complimentary colours. The pupils also used the blending of colours and beads and stones to emphasize patterns and line. Awesome!

Science – Do you remember?

Usually, science homework asks students to revisit something they have seen in class that week. However, this week you may have found that the homework seemed harder, as we have set some tasks based on prior learning in the same topic.

This is so we can assess how much our students retain and then individually target the next steps in their learning.

The Cambridge curriculum is a spiral curriculum, designed so that students revisit topics in their learning journey and gain a strength of understanding from diving deeper each visit.

We have asked our students to be resilient and try their hardest with content they have seen before (but may have forgotten) and that we will use this homework to support our learning in class next week!

By flipping the traditional learning model, students can take greater ownership of their learning and develop valuable skills for success!

Dissolving, melting, scientific drawing, measuring, investigating buoyancy and using forcemeters this week in science.

Music In Music, the Years 3 to 8 students explored music making using garage band and music chrome lab. They were introduced to composition skills combining a melody, backing and rhythm track in various music composition tasks. They were also introduced to mixing apple loops music tracks as well as utilizing the Smart Drum to make a rhythm pattern. The year 7 students proudly composed the backing music for their stop motion project in Art. At invigorating instrumentals this week, we enjoyed live music by George and Rahul. Well done to all students!

The Music Department in collaboration with the various Key stages would love to extend a warm invitation to all families of our Perse School Singapore community to attend this year's Christmas showcase.

Physical Education Year 8 students are diving into a unique blend of fitness and creativity! 🥋🎶 Exploring the fusion of martial arts and music, they're set to craft their signature moves to the rhythm of their chosen songs. Get ready for a dynamic showcase of discipline and rhythm as these young talents bring their creations to life!

CHINESE Using key sentences learned in Chinese class, pupils engaged in activities that involve comparing quantities, ages and numerical values. For example, the year 2 pupils might use phrases like “ 左边多 (zuǒ biān duō- left is more)、右边少 (yòu biān shǎo-right is less)”to express quantities.

The Year 6 pupils have been learning to use “比”(bǐ – to compare) to make comparisons in sizes, height, weather and age. Pupils enjoyed using the poker cards to play number guessing games while using sentences such as “我比你大” (wǒ bǐ nǐ dà—I’m bigger than you)” to make comparisons based on the topics given to them. Some of them began being creative by creating their own games to expand their sentences.

The interactive nature of the activities allow pupils to participate actively in discussions and enhance their language proficiency by applying it to real-life scennarios.

The Other Clinic service opportunity at The Perse School, Singapore The Perse School, Singapore is pleased to announce a collaboration with The Other Clinic (TOC) to provide counselling and psychological services to students on the school premises.

Dr Ronina Stevens, Director and Clinical Psychologist, and Lynne Atherton, Counsellor, will be holding an informal, introductory session for parents at 8.30am on Wednesday 8 November 2023 to explain the support TOC can offer to our students and to provide further information about their clinic. Please see the next page for Lynee Atherton's biography.

TOC offers high quality psychological services in Singapore and internationally. They are an open and friendly team of counsellors and psychologists, experienced in supporting mental wellness across the age span (children, adolescents and adults), and catering to a broad range of mental health and de velopmental issues. They have long-established partnerships with various international schools in Singapore and across Southeast Asia and work closely with teachers and hea lth professionals to promote the well-being of their clients.

Please note that whilst this is a collaboration for premises; the service, guidance and advice given to families is through T he Other Clinic and has no affiliation to The Perse School, Singapore. It has been agreed that concurrent appointments will be arranged where possible on a rotational basis to e nable long term academic studies to be uninterrupted.

Lynne works with children, adolescents and adults to empower them to make meaningful changes to their lives and to help them to develop life skills to manage future challenges. She works collaboratively with her clients to develop a strong, trusting relationship from which to explore their issues. She is naturally warm and calm and her counselling approach is non-judgmental, empathetic and transparent.

Lynne supports clients with a range of mental health issues, including anxiety (social anxiety and OCD), depression, self-esteem, emotional regulation, behavioural issues, anger management, traumatic experiences, transitional difficulties, relationship issues, grief/ loss and school refusal. She works with neurodiverse individuals and supports them and their families. She also runs group and individual therapy for children and young adolescents to develop emotional literacy and social thinking skills.

Lynne’s therapeutic approach draws on evidence-based interventions, including cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and is tailored to meet her client’s needs. She collaborates with other health professionals and school counsellors/teachers, where necessary, to help her clients achieve their goals.

Lynne previously practised as a lawyer, helping clients to successfully resolve their legal issues through litigation, arbitration and mediation. As a result, she understands the demands and stresses of corporate life, career transition and burnout and has worked in diverse environments with people from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds.

Originally from the UK, Lynne has been living in Singapore since 2013, with her husband and two daughters. She understands that relationships, expat life and finding a work/life balance can, at times, be challenging. Lynne believes in the benefits of sport to promote positive mental health and the therapeutic power of nature; she volunteers as a netball coach for girls aged 6 – 14 years and has led treks for a local trekking club. She is passionate about inspiring and motivating her clients to achieve new goals and to realise their full potential.

On a Tuesday and Thursday students and parents are welcome to support our Live Music in the Atrium Attendance: Please ensure that students are attending school daily from 8.30 registration to 3.30, if your child needs to be absent please inform the class teacher and student services.

Hats: Please can you remind your child to bring hats into school for play.

Due to the recent notice on suspected headlice, we cannot provide spare hats.

Snack and Lunch: Please remind children to not bring sweets or Nut based products into school.
