As University of Perpetual Help System Dalta celebrates its 25th founding anniversary with the theme “Transcending the legacy of excellence”, this magazine’s cover features a torch that also resembles a trophy being held by the hands of a child and a man who seemed to have excelled in his career. We all know that a torch can be passed on to the successor and a trophy implies excellence. But aiming for it requires a pruning process as intended through the black background. Just like in this cover, the hand at the right leaves a legacy to the one at the left who tries to go beyond what is deemed to be achieved in a long and difficult journey.

MESSAGE FROM THE School Director

I would like to take this platform to congratulate every Perpetualite for a job well done. As we look into the past and present achievements of the University, it would only mean that all those past and present Perpetualites have done their job well—we are all victors.

The twenty-fifth year founding anniversary is a living testament that Perpetual and the Perpetualite family of Calamba Campus, with all the ups and downs, with all the challenges, still have achieved a lot and reached multitude of milestones together—the biggest of which is this— the 25th Founding Anniversary of the University; 25 years of being a Perpetualite family together.

Throughout the humble 25 years, our institution has achieved significant feat, achievements and accomplishments, to mention some: PACUCOA Level Three Accreditation status of thirteen programs, and Accreditation of all other programs of the University by PACUCOA which were achieved despite the pandemic, our continued ISO certification, CHED Deregulation status, other certifications and recognitions which signify the quality of service and education we provide to the community – putting much reasons to hold our head high as Perpetualites.

To the Chairman of the Board, Dr/BGen. Antonio Laperal Tamayo, our University President Dr. Anthony Jose Moran Tamayo, To Dr. Arnaldo De Guzman, to the late Dr. Alfonso Loreto, Thank you for giving your support and direction to Perpetual Calamba. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the academic deans, program heads, department heads for your excellent contribution in the academy and for running your respective departments successfully. To our faculty members and non-teaching personnel for your continuous service in achieving the highest quality of life for all the Perpetualites; and to the Perpetualite students and graduates who constantly bring glory to the name of our University bearing its motto, “Character building is nation building”.

All of us are part of the successes of our University. We have secured victory for 25 years because of what you did, because of what we did, and because of what everyone did to help Perpetual. Our dearest Perpetualites, our legacy will never stop here. We will continue transcending excellence in our respective paths and we will create better legacies bearing one Perpetualite brand together. We are just about to start; and let’s go hand in hand as we traverse towards more successful years in the future.

ERNESTO F. RAMIREZ, RMT, EdD School Director

THRIVING THROUGH THE YEARS

Giant successes are earned from small ones through which excellence is uncloaked. Most of the time, we tend to skip little steps and proceed to do bigger ones as we perceive it excellent. But, little do we know, excellence is nowhere to be found when we skip the most important part – the growing season; and the growing season starts from baby steps – the more we jump, the more we will fall back.

For 25 years, the University of Perpetual Help Calamba Campus has been proving that to be able to be excellent, it takes small steps and furthermore, be learners from it. That will bring us to mastery, to excellence— the reason why the university is thriving through the years.

In this magazine, featured stories showcase narratives of people who started from scratch, learned, and eventually succeeded as they dreamed themselves to be experiencing; stories on how the university honed and formed this community from

simple striver to a top-tier as it believes in the paradox that in order to achieve the highest quality of life, we have to be learners of the least. Having this done, the university continuously thrives even in the midst of uncertainty as it always looks at every circumstance with a silver lining. It has remained steadfast and eager to nurture quality individuals with the character that it purposefully teaches— a nation builder— going beyond the excellence they achieve.

May you be encouraged to take the hurdles as your first step towards greatness; be inspired with the stories this magazine tells, and be transcenders of excellence.

PERPETUALITES ON A MISSION

REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE FOR YEARS

Over the years, Perpetualites through the department of Community Extension Services (formerly known as Community Outreach Program) has been providing excellent services not just to the chosen and adoptive communities but also to the Perpetualites as they develop their character in reaching out to the needy.

Dr. Amelita Garcia, CES Head, affirmed that the Perpetualite community is truly generous in sharing resources as everyone wants to donate, initiate and give time to providing quality assistance and kindness to the people since 2002. Some of the recent efforts that truly showcase the “Helper of God” spirit in every Perpetualite are as follows:

It was a project of Student Volunteers Association last April 28, 2022 under CES which was held in the midst of the national and local campaign and elections period. This was conducted to educate the individuals on how they should be choosing the best political candidates to govern the local and national positions. It also emphasized wise voting for the common good and not out of peer pressure, focusing on fighting misinformation that continuously spreads on different platforms.

UPHSD-C unmasks its first brand ambassadress after 12 years

After twelve years of searching for a Perpetualite who will represent the UPHSD Calamba Campus to the Community, AB Communication freshman Aevie Viterbo was chosen to be our campus’ Brand Ambassador.

Marketing Officer Jeffrey Almeda stated that aside from the long years of having no brand ambassador, the pandemic made them decide to look for someone who would strengthen the presence of the University in social media, especially that the reach of the campus’ social media accounts is not limited inside the province, but also nationwide. The search began as the marketing team of the University requested different programs to provide candidates for brand ambassadors and Viterbo was one of them. Upon initial selection of the Calamba Campus Marketing team and the final approval of the Central Office, she was rightfully named as our Brand Ambassadress.

Aevie Viterbo, in the interview, was flattered with the big opportunity that was given to her, being the face of Calamba Campus in the DALTA System after 12 years.

“Since 2008 pa pala naghahanap ng Brand Ambassador from our campus and when I heard that [I was chosen], my heart melted because I am so honored and grateful at the same time,” Viterbo said.

As the ambassador, Viterbo enjoys a full discount on the tuition fee which made her a university

scholar, and a constant icon on the tarpaulins, print, and video advertisement of the University.

Choosing Viterbo as the ambassadress has produced a positive outcome. Mr. Almeda said that among the ambassadors from the three campuses of UPHSD, she is always included on the billboards and print advertisements of the University. This is one of the proudest achievements of the University for the past years.

UPHSD-C commences New Normal Graduation since 2020

Kate Christian Ravelo

After two years of recognizing the efforts of the students online, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Calamba Campus finally brought its graduates into a face to face Commencement Rites at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.

This was the first commencement exercises of the University for Baccalaureate programs since the COVID-19 pandemic started. It was attended by Batch Matatag (2022), along with Batch Maalab (2020 and 2021) who were not able to have their graduation in their respective years due to pandemic restrictions. The graduates had an unusual but equally meaningful graduation experience as safety protocols such as wearing masks were implemented. On the other hand, yesterday’s event marked the shift of the University’s graduates wearing black to maroon togas. What did not change were the presence and gratitude of the parents, relatives, friends, and loved ones of the graduates to witness them receiving their respective degrees.

The Founder and Chairman of the board Dr./ BGen Antonio L. Tamayo, in his inspirational message, mentioned that the event honored the graduates’ hardships they faced in their college life. He also expressed his confidence that the graduates will champion the competitive world after college life as the University has trained them to be leaders and globally-competent individuals.

On the other hand, Calamba City Mayor Roseller Rizal, the Guest of Honor and speaker, presented the plans of the new administration to the city, especially to the new graduates that will seek for job after this chapter, further emphasizing their vital part in making the City successful in the years to come. He also expressed his gratitude to the University for

opening its campus to the public as one of the vaccination sites during the National Vaccination Drive last November 2021.

Then, six Perpetualites who were conferred the Loyalty Award were: Angela Marie P. Alcantara, Mutya M. Malakas, Ryan Christopher T. Hagutin, Ser John Paulo I. Calicdan, Carlos Emil M. De Villa, and Frances Carlou O. Palaña. This batch of graduates also produced seventeen awardees of Dr./BGen Antonio L. Tamayo medallion for Leadership—an award that is given to students who have shown exemplary leadership and involvement in both academic and non-academic endeavors— with six bronze, nine silver, and two gold. Annielyn S. Eugenio of AB in Communication and Stephanie Krisha T. Parayno were the two graduates who received the second highest award of UPHSD; the latter being the lone Cum Laude of the Graduating Class. These recognitions earned them the opportunity to deliver Welcome Address and Address of Thanks respectively.

Indeed, it was a triumphant day for the batch who are best distinguished as the pioneering batch of the K-to-12 Curriculum and “pandemic batch”, earning their hard-toiled diplomas and degrees they have worked for these past four years. The event ended as graduates sung their graduation song, “Mapa” by SB19, pledged as official members of the Alumni Community of the University, led by Alumni Coordinator Mr. Jaydee Querubin.

Congratulations, Batch Maalab and Matatag!

Have you ever imagined coming up on stage

every commencement exercise without any academic award that puts glory to your accomplishments or even completion? Probably not because the majority thinks that you have to be recognized or lauded when you get to be on top or that you were able to ace medals. Truth be told, this became a headache for people who normally consume 1-2 hours scanning their review papers and yet, do this nonetheless to pass the standard.

The country has to produce a bunch of bright individuals who can attain global competency, and the fact that this increases each time hurts the nation which is why many have resorted to lying low. But why lie low when you can be delighted while reaching your goal?

While some reach hard for their goals because that’s what they want; sadly, some are only doing it for clout.

These manners all make us so desperate. Why is it so hard to be just called excellent—a top tier—in our own way? The moment you get the diploma and nothing, can it not be considered one for the books? Why so?

This notion drops the bomb. What can make a difference is your attitude—the way you perceive things. You have to think out of the bubble. Only you yourself can make a distinction. Break the edifice of renowned merit and make your own version.

This does not tell you to not try hard. It only teaches you a lesson to hang loose while still doing great. In working out on any task given, do it your own way, not the way other people would ask you to do which results in unnecessary pressure because you cannot actually do what they wanted or how they needed it to be done.

Just never forget to enjoy your present situation even if it requires a lot of effort. Remember that the more you oppose the current, the more it will drown you and take you down. Just go with the flow until it drops you to your destination. Having fun while working out on something makes things easier.

Finally, the moment you step on the stage of the finale, start thinking that even though you may not wear any medals, it still weighs more to be crowned with the crystal clear truth that you finished the race only people with grit can. Feel free to get wilding that you accomplished your seamed course in one piece. It does not make you less of yourself when you believe this way. When you think of it, you defy the old culture. Excellence is never measured with the golds or silvers but with the impact and the legacy that you were able to impart to others.

Do this now, be great in the future.

Excellence is never measured with the golds or the silvers but with the impact and the legacy that you were able to impart to others.

No to Cancellation! Yes to Education!

The social media we know as a place to converse with netizens is continuously evolving into an avenue for hate and so called ‘cancel culture’ which occurs when someone expresses a culturally or socially-inappropriate post/s or views that are not thoroughlyresearched and composed. Social media users, specifically influencers and those who have established a wide range of engagements online face different criticisms- a combination of constructive and hateful criticisms. On the other hand, netizens with enough knowledge on the topic and issue choose to educate the person so that posts or actions will not be disseminated even more. If these users are mentally stable and know how to distinguish what to absorb more than not, they will not be affected and instead, use this event as their learning experience. However, if these users are struggling inside, this instance might hit them hard.

Looking at how people perceive issues online nowadays, cancel culture is being practiced. It becomes a trend that does not easily fade in a snap. As a person who likes reading comments, I see that some commenters on the issue tend to go overboard by attacking the owner of the post personally about their physical appearance and calling them names that are irrelevant from the issue. It is a serious case when insecurities are being attacked by others. It saddens me to see how the world of social media prevents someone from redeeming themselves from the issue they enter into. It seems like there is no room for change.

In the zone where negativities exist, I still see hope. It is refreshing to see how the easy access to information helps young individuals to be aware of current and past issues. Because of this information, there are issues and toxic cultures that are being changed and corrected as time passes by. When there are issues circulating online, the knowledgeable users use the case as an opportunity to educate people who still lack knowledge about the issue. I believe that educating someone is a better option than to totally cancel them.

To educate someone takes purpose, responsibility, patience, and knowledge management. When we educate someone, we should have a purpose which is to enlighten their minds about the matter. They have to know that they have to be careful as their action will affect not only them but also the community or group of

people which they did wrong. When you educate, you are accepting a commitment that is serious and heavy. Knowledge and information are crucial as you have to study about it before imparting it to someone who needs it. When you spread wrong information, you have to admit your mistake and fix it as soon as possible. Last, we have to accept the fact that we are all different. There will be different perceptions about the information you mentioned. There will be users who will take the information as knowledge and a learning experience. Others will argue about your points and will try to reject your ideas even though it is backed up with facts. That is where patience should take place because no matter how eager you are to educate someone, there will be people who would also bring you down even if you perceive you are right. In this situation, the best choice is to be kind.

It takes time to bring back social media as a venue for self expression and credible source of information, especially now that trolls are prevalent. As long as we have the grit to fight disinformation and cancel culture, no one will be cancelled and instead, everyone might learn from their mistake. Hopefully, one day, we can live in a world where everyone is willing to learn. Cancel culture still exists but we, as individuals, can do something to change the system and give that precious “second chance” for others to redeem themselves from what they did.

Distance Learning in Pandemic: The Survivors

Shiella Marie Bordador

Thestudents had to face different levels of challenges as the schools had to shut down when the pandemic broke out. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the traditional face-to-face classes into distance learning. The sudden shift in learning modality has brought psychological effects to the students due to the isolation and lack of interaction with their fellow students and teachers.

The pandemic obviously made it too difficult for financially struggling students. Some students have already stopped–-either they were forced to work first and get back to their studies later, or some have totally stopped learning due to different circumstances. On the other hand, the surviving students were so pressured, bringing their school activities, events and set up at home. It was said that the continuity of learning is better than academic freeze. So, here we are.

Unstable internet connection and abrupt communication and interaction are some of the few obstacles the pandemic batch had to face during distance learning. In the latest Ookla Speed test Global Index Rankings, the Philippines placed 93rd among the countries with the fastest median mobile data download speeds. Let us also take into consideration the struggles of the students who have

laboratory-based

subjects. What happened to these students? It will make you wonder if they actually succeeded in their activities that require face-to-face demonstration or performance, due to the need for laboratory equipment and facilities.

If you are going to ask me, “What does it take to be a student under the distance learning setup?”, my only answer will be RESILIENCY. Resiliency is the new sustainability. Learners have to be resourceful, innovative, creative and flexible in order to surpass all the hard times that are about to come. Because of the changes and

challenges in the education system under this set-up, we became so resilient no one could ever imagine.

Was distance learning effective? We cannot conclude yet, as the process of distance learning actually has its pros and cons towards the learners. I do believe that it is too early to say that the distance learning set-up in the Philippines was a success. Moreover, I think that a few more academic years to come could give us adequate results. In addition to this, I believe that a successful result can only be achieved by improving the education system. It is our hope that the government will give more emphasis on the hanging educational issues and challenges during distance learning amid pandemic.

I call this batch the ‘survivors’, simply because we are still blessed and privileged to finish another academic year despite the challenges we have faced from the last semesters under online classes. We are lucky enough to be walking all together towards the end of this tunnel. May the future ahead of us be bright and kind.

To the class of 2022, congratulations! We made it! Take a bow and raise your flag!

MAROON BACHELOR’S

The pioneering batch of UPHDS-C Senior High

As sablay indicates moving forward to college in the University, Bachelor’s Gown implies a portal to the real world— both signifying a new chapter.

The pioneering batch of senior high school students in the University who were the first to wear the Perpetual graduation sash more known as the “maroon sablay”, was dubbed as the “experiments” and the “babies”. Why?

Back when the Senior High School (SHS) was initially implemented, they were the first class to experience a series of “trial and error” especially in measuring its effectiveness in the educational scene of the country. Having said that, the University provided and promulgated sets of training for their preparation to college – safe to say, they were nurtured. We all know that babies are someone sought to be looked after in order for them to survive. They have to be poured with attention and a great deal of caring. Thus, the generation

which was expected to already be the seniors and leaders of their age were suddenly the “babies” that most members of the community monitor and supervise.

These students had been trying to prove that they do not only carry “potential” but they want to translate it to reality; that they do not always need guidance because they’re also the thriving ones. They had been demonstrating a champion guise when they received countless fresh testing activities in all aspects and always ended up flourishing in them.

When they entered college, they also proved that although they would encounter new experiences again, they already knew how to manage and succeed in them with all the learnings they acquired in the previous levels.

Many students who graduated in SHS in the campus have excelled individually in their college, same

university. Those who were “babied” in SHS to shine in their craft have brought the bright light in college— from being leaders to a higher level. Even the ones who did not have the chance to deliver in SHS still shone during their college days. Some have continued coming through with academic excellence while some served with passion as officers of different organizations.

Another threat to their triumph was when a pandemic came into the scene. It was another wave of new things for them to master and make a successful conclusion out of. They entered a new world that only brave people could carry on— a world that tested their mental, emotional, and physical capacity, trying to put a hold on them. Sadly, some did not make it—worse stopped— but the majority were able to survive and continue.

Being consistent with what they started since in SHS to college was tough, but most of them managed to prevail.

They may be eyed by many, but these people who bore and endured incalculable drills have proven their true worth.

They may be ‘babied’ at first, but their experiences pulled them up to maturity and growth. At some point they may be babies of all the adversities that passed which unleashed the hulk inside of them, which transcended in their branding. If legacy is the topic, then they already have a big one to show off.

Are they ready for the next chapter? These guys having said as trained and educated is an understatement. They are already set to fulfill their long-time yearned college completion; set to go beyond excellence as they have always proved in every thing given.

RAY OF HOPE

Life is inevitably stormy, but after every storm comes a ray of hope that generates new beginning to go beyond excellence.

She has been working for two decades in the University; entering the institution in 2001 as Registrar Staff before gaining rank as Coordinator in the year 2010 until now.

When asked if she is satisfied with the performance she gives in the University, her answer goes like this:

“As a product of my own institution, I truly believe that my loyalty to perform and deliver an exceptional service to all stakeholders is outstanding. I was rooted in a Perpetual family since my father and my mother were Perpetualites as well. This motivates me to embrace my job and brings the best effort I can to achieve the goal of the University. Being part of a vital section in an organization, she is tasked to respond to the financial issues of deserving students and help them achieve their goals –one of which is to finish their education. She considers that the Scholarship Office is a success, managing to surge the revenues of our institution through the help of grant providers (both private and government partners) over two

consecutive years. She also has a good number of grantees despite the pandemic that strikes us hard.

In terms of projects, programs, and achievements, surely there is a lot to count. The scholarship department has several scholarship grants in response to the growing need of the institution to help the students who are financially challenged through the collaboration of institution and industry partners. Her loyalty and dedication to her work was recognized by the institution for her years of service in 2007, 2012 and is about to receive her 20th year Award this coming 2023.

About her greatest contribution in the University’s success and excellence, she said that she was partnered with different industries to gain more grants and be able to manage and create Student Financial Assistance in quest of providing quality education to deserving and financially challenged students and become a positive contributor to the nation. It also allows her to help the revenues of the institution and the students at the same time to pursue college education.

Her advice to her co-employees is to love their work, their co-employee, family and most especially Our Almighty Father. Because she knows that once you love God everything will follow and fall into the right places.

Indeed, an epitome of a strong, dedicated, God-fearing and humble woman. The name behind all these stories of success is none other than Ms. Lolita C. Mappe, our Scholarship Coordinator. She is a great part of the University’s success and excellence because for two decades, she never gets tired of giving hope to students who are really in need to build their dreams. And that’s something that the University and its stakeholders will never forget.

the mark of a Perpetualite-blooded mom

Annielyn Eugenio

It’s true that a mother’s care and love is beyond perfect.

How many schools or universities do you know have quality health, safety, and security services?

I am certain that there are a few to name. Luckily, here in University of Perpetual Help System DALTA - Calamba Campus, the health status of all students is being monitored. The University Clinic is not just a place for those who experience emergencies inside school premises, it is also a home of comfort.

Ms. Rebecca Ansay, the Head nurse of our University, is prominent, respectable, and notable in taking care of the Perpetualites. She gave her 25 years serving the University, being the mother of students inside the school and known for her comforting and warming assistance in medication.

For her, success is like achieving goals in life, achieving the desired goals based on her dreams in life, while excellence is doing the best for the betterment of life. In her silver years of experience as a school nurse, she has received a lot of awards including the

say, while the University blossoms to its silver stature now, Ms. Ansay was there to witness all of it.

She also shared that she can consider the Clinic Department a success because all of them cooperate and have teamwork with good leadership in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities to achieve their goals. She also instilled in us the importance of Professional growth of the staff in developing a health care plan in the university; formulation of guidelines and policies in the department for the continuous giving of quality care and service.

For her, the success of their department will never be possible without the Lord’s guidance.

Truly, Ms. Rebecca Ansay is a woman of dignity and a caring mother for all. She is a living proof that being a Perpetualite means being able to give service without asking anything in return. The 25 years of her taking care of students will always be something the Perpetualite community is grateful and valued for.

“Aim high, dream big, perseverance and lots of patience to complete success and goals in life. Always do things with enthusiasm,” she imparted.

The Woman of Art;Bearer of Hope and Love

“Without her, the University will never have fun, colors and pride”.

This woman of art believes that success is not measured by the achievement of material wealth but with love and concern that bring pleasant relationships among family members. As an old adage says “No other success can compensate for failure in the home”. Hence, living a happy and harmonious life with family, with God at the center of it and working together with love and concern for the good of all define how success is being achieved. Ditto with excellence, it is when you pursue something and give your best to accomplish it especially for the welfare and service of other people.

She has been serving as Coordinator of the Performing Arts Group (PAG) for more than five years. Previously, she also taught Tourism subjects in the College of Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) for several years. Being a proud alumna of this school, she considers the University as her second home. With candor and humility as far as she’s concerned, she believes that she has given her best to serve the Perpetual community, especially in the Performing Arts. Talking about accomplishments of the PAG, she said that they have numerous accomplishments in the past especially before the pandemic broke out. The student-performers brought pride to the university with their several victories in the field of dances, music and visual arts where they usually bring home the bacon.

One of the biggest achievements of the Performing Arts Guild is their Grand Recital. The series of SULYAP recitals before and even during pandemic. The first SULYAP recital held in February 2018 was considered a huge success. Perpetualites skills and talents were showcased, which only proved that our students do not only excel academically but artistically as well. The outbreak of Covid 19 pandemic which hindered face-to-face school activities including PAG, did not deter them from pulling off more successes, rather, made them more passionate in performing sans benefits and tuition discounts from the school, keeping their love and commitment to their passion alive and burning.

One of the most important and memorable achievements of PAG-Calamba was when the ALTAS Dance Crew were adjudged as the grand champion in the Anilag Festival, a weeklong festival held yearly in Laguna. One of the many activities is the modern dance competitions participated by different schools in Laguna. Then several competitions followed suit where they were always hailed winners. She would also consider their victories as part of the department’s and the institution’s achievements.

She believes that support from the department itself in particular and from the management in general contribute a lot to achieving goals. She believes that the school takes pride in whatever achievements inside and outside the school campus the student performers bring. She’s also privileged to be part in molding and enhancing their God-given talents for the glory of the Perpetualite community and of course for the God Almighty whose provisions and blessings to Performing Arts Guild are overwhelming.

Asking about her inspiration in her service, her answer is this “This may sound self-serving but I have no one in mind as far as inspiration regarding career is concerned but my mother. I am living witness of her many struggles in life, how she started from scratch until she reached her goals. My mother is a late bloomer, so to speak career wise, because of priorities. Raising a family and taking care of a bed-ridden mother were no mean feats, hence her career had taken a backseat but with God’s graces, she survived them all. For me, she is a woman of substance and dignity who takes pride in what she has achieved and contributed to the academic community where she once belonged. I need not say more because her former colleagues and students can attest to it. The rest is history.”

When asked about her advice for her fellow workers she said that it is important to work with dignity because it contributes to the fullness of life. Although material benefits are the prime consideration why we work, we should also find satisfaction when we work to serve other people.

Some know her as Ma’am Aylet and some know her as the bearer of color, fun and pride in the University. She never failed to give importance to the essence of art. She never gets tired of listening and supporting the student-artists of Perpetual. Truly, she’s a carrier of hope and love – hope for every student who cherishes and values Art in their lives; and love for every talented Perpetualites in giving unending support and acknowledgement.

Surely, Ms. April Violet O. Cubilla is an asset and a great contributor to the University’s success and excellence.

“Happy family... happy home... happy life. - because a happy home which is built under a strong foundation with Godcentered family members makes it strong and harmonious.” No wonder, she fulfills her task harmoniously and effortlessly, for she has a strong foundation that pushes her to strive harder and give her service more than a 100%.

THE NONSTOP HUSTLER

Oftentimes, people tend to stop dreaming when they already achieved what they have been working for and envisioned. They would let their passion towards a goal be swept away as they are already living a life they wish to earn, enjoying every bit of it. Others would take the path of building and carrying out a dream as another wave of anguish, so they would rather live in the moment than to face another cycle. These stories and all sorts of it are things that never pass through Engr. Edison Bengco’s mind. He has his world revolving around dismantling new successes in life. He is a man who is always thirsty for more.

Engr. Bengco was born from a family of farmers in Pampanga. He admitted, it was hard to sustain a family from that simple living. He came from a family of ten and he is the sixth in the siblings. At an early age, he lost one of his siblings due to a medical condition, a proof that life for them back in the province was tough.

Another hurdle in his life that hindered him from achieving his dream was during the early years of his college. He tried to move to Manila to study to then struggle fitting into the world of Manilenos as he enrolled in a private university. But, he did not fret. It did not stop him from making big steps in life. He fought his social

insecurities by joining an organization in the university called Christian Community.

Continuing what he started, he struggled financially just as anybody who risked his fate in the city coming from a simple family would. His struggle just got worse in his graduating year. Even after he finished college, the problems were everpresent as he moved back to the province. He would think about how he could have a stable job and earn a living. But again, this man never lost an idea. With the learning that he acquired in college, he put up a small shop that catered to electronic issues of different machines and devices. This somehow made him survive.

Mentioning these hardships, it was incredible that Engr. Bengco was able to complete his degree in Electrical and Communications Engineering (ECE), twoyear technical and vocational in TV and radio servicing, passed the ECE board exam in 1997, and finished a Master’s Degree in 2002 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). And just recently, he earned his doctorate degree at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, paved his way in the Reserved Officers of the Philippines in the university. Without a doubt, he could achieve all of these because he was full of determination and drive to get

what he wanted. Indeed, this makes us all realize that struggles can be our stepping stone and become our edge to success.

His experiences may be familiar to everyone as he might not be the only one who has this kind of story, but this sets as a reminder that the feeling of fulfillment in life is that success is not earned by chance but with hardwork and perseverance. Thus, this man marked himself ‘excellent’ for always trying to build a new dream from another and make it happen whatever comes his way.

What he wanted to leave everyone during the interview was a 4-letter abbreviated word—”BALE” which means house in his dialect. B which means to begin with the end, finishing what you started whether you like it or not; A for Appy or Happy in his province; L for Lovable by living a lovely life in the midst of frustrations; lastly, the E which means Eucharist that the University of Perpetual Help taught him.

Indeed, Engr. Bengco is a nonstop hustler in achieving goals and dreams.

A Dream that Began with The Sims

When we were young, we had interests and hobbies that we seemed to enjoy. Now that we are already striving for our future, it is fun to go back to where and when we are starting to discover and know ourselves. It’s interesting to know that this woman found her future through the Sims, a life-simulation video game. Now, she is already near her dream to become an Architect. She is Jessica Marie Dela Rosa, a 26-year-old Architecture student.

Levvel (2022) states that The Sims is the most famous life-simulator application in the whole world. Jessica used to play this during her high school days. By playing this game, she was able to control the sims (virtual persons), as well as building structures of their houses and putting the interior and exterior design. Unexpectedly, this hobby of hers aligned with the path she is walking right now. She had Fashion Design, Architecture, and Civil Engineering as her choices, but without a doubt, her heart loudly goes for Architecture.

When we are a newbie in every game or application we play, we discover what’s in it through experimenting and studying. She said that she was not familiar at all with Architecture but if you indeed want the course, you will choose not to stop discovering and further improve yourself. During the beginning of her journey, she definitely enjoyed it, but being on this course made her feel that she was not the best in the class. She has classmates whose skills and artistry are better than hers. Moreover, there are times when she cannot avoid comparing herself to others. On

the other hand, purchasing expensive materials needed in the course also became her struggle.

Despite the struggles that she experienced, her family is her biggest support system. Family is our core, that if you think you do not have any support system, you will go back to them. Her parents did not leave her, especially her father whom she is closer to. When something is wrong or different, her parents easily deduce it.

The turning point that she considers in her life happened during her third year in college. They had financial problems which pushed her to find work. For two and a half years, she became a call center agent. Her realizations after this experience were, “Mahirap pala, na hindi natin nakikita yung other side ng parents natin.”

She said that it was a trailer to the real world. It was hard for her to adjust. She had hard times atwork, butwhat came to her mind? She never saw her parents struggle in their respective work.

She got back to her studies stronger and full of wisdom from her experience. Now that she is in her fourth year in college, she has the grit to finish this course. One factor that pressures her is her age as typical people of this age already have their work. In addition to that, there is pressure for her to be a role model to the younger students in the department. However, it does not negatively impact her, knowing that her parents do not get tired of supporting them,

The Sims will always be different from the real world but this app can aspire young individuals to pursue a dream near how this app works. May this story of Jessica remind you to keep going and think that it is okay to question yourself.

“Always believe in yourself 90% and think of your core. Sarili mo ba or para sa iba?” she said.

KI-KAYa Natin ‘To: The Unforeseen Superiority

There are students who strive for the best that they can, to the best of their ability. It is indeed nice to see your name on the top or on the Dean’s list, paying back all the hard work and effort you have done throughout the school year.

While everything changes with time, Kathleen Kaye Barcelo, commonly known as “Kikay” seems to be transforming too in a way she did not see herself to be like—from being a happy-go-lucky girl to awell-developed student.

This motivating life period of Kikay began when she entered the University of Perpetual Help in 2016.

“I usually don’t accept (school) responsibilities and I am not fond of being committed to something” she told me in an interview.

Being in the campus for almost six years, she met different kinds of people. Before college, she told me that she felt lazy about meeting and making new friends, but of course, “no man is an island” they say. She made new friends and classmates as expected and out of her knowledge, she met people that changed her sluggish lifestyle as a student. Later on, she realized that she is now able to say “No” and slowly makes distance from her old bad habits.

“Totoo nga na malaki ang impluwensya ng mga kaibigan”, she added.

Completing two years in Senior High School, Kikay thought that she already knew everything; proving herself wrong when she entered college.

Originally, she wanted to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Communication program, but then later changed her mind because of a friend who, on the other hand, wanted to take Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. At first, she considered herself a joke, taking a college program that she did not even plan to take.

College is harder than she thought, especially when the pandemic came and the traditional face-to-face set up suddenly shifted to virtual classes. Like every other person, she also felt the boredom and unproductivity of being stocked at home. Life seems to be fast-moving during the pandemic period. Like any of us, Kikay also experienced losses and gains in life. Being strong and courageous as ever, she chose to just continue and keep going until she reached the final

stage of her college days – the senior year.

Proudly, she told me about reaching her senior year without getting any failing grades. But the real plot twist here was that she decided to become the president of UPHSD Calamba Psychology Society, in contrast to what she said to me during the interview - she did not like responsibilities and commitments. When asked why did she change her mind,

“Siguro, lahat talaga ng bagay nagbabago,”

“Walang madali sa mundo. Wala akong karanasan sa mga ganitong bagay. Hindi ito yung Kikay na kilala ninyo. Ramdam na ramdam ko na maraming nagdududa sa kakayahan ko. Pero imbis na pang hinaan ako ng loob, ginawa ko yoon na motivation para buhatin ang sarili ko at ang buong society ng Psychology”, she added.

Greatly surprised by her unexpected character development, she also found herself doing the things she is not usually doing before - staying up late to finish her school tasks, seriously focusing on the activities and plans for the good of the organization and making an amazing lead towards her classmates and schoolmates.

Wala kang katulad.”

Kikay also revealed that the University of Perpetual Help has helped her a lot in terms of honing the best version of herself. From her circle of friends, up to the professors who taught her a lot of lessons in life and in academics, she is grateful for the University for the memorable six years. For Kikay, striving for excellence is

not a race. You cannot change your past but you can always start anew. There’s this Japanese proverb that says, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” Kikay is one of the many people who proves that changing for the best is possible. She obviously learned from her mistakes yet, she did not let these mistakes define her; she remained composed and adjusted her standards and goals for the better.

When you strive for the better, you are always looking at where you came from, where you are now and how you will get a little bit better than you are today. For those who strive, remember that you will start from being good, then better, later on you’ll be very good or best and finally, you’ll reach the stage of being excellent. ONLY, if you wanted to be one.

PH

A Womanof Vitality

We have heard success stories that highlight rags to riches, nobody becoming somebody, and spotlight moments of once ignored to someone being adored. What you are about to witness in this story is a typical turn-around of a woman who was a student dreamer who had attained a not-so-high reaching achievement. Yet, what this zealous woman brings us is one of the most desirable achievement stories one could ever have. The rough roads she took had almost beaten her but she showed she is far greater than a student – she was a Perpetualite Radtech young student dreamer. For this reason, I believe her story is worth-sharing for. Let me add that what makes this story interesting is the kind of attitude this woman has that most successful people possess in the pursuit of their dreams: unstoppable, invulnerable, and unbreakable. These attributes make Nazandra Meneses stand out.

She persistently holds on to her dreams until the very end. She makes an inch of hard work for every new challenge that comes her way. Her short narrative is an inspiration to the college students so her mini-bio is a must-heard success story that one must tell. Ms.Nazandra is a Laguna-born Registered Radiologic technologist (RRT) and has been working as RRT in the Imaging Department in Global Medical Medical Center of Laguna, Inc. for almost four years now. Her specific duties include X-ray, Ct-scan, Mammography, and Ultrasound Units. As an RRT in the said institution, she must review and develop x-rays to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. She also handles and manipulates Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and Radiology Information System (RIS). She also performs as a mammographer, Ultrasound Technologist, and CT-scan Technologist.

When asked about her journey to being a Licensed Radiologic

Technologist, she shared both ups and downs and finally reaching her goal. She is like many of the college students who surpassed the heavy traffic, the busy weeks of review, submission deadlines of course requirements, and the payment due dates. She started as a Freshman College in the University of Perpetual Help SystemJonelta in Binan Campus as BS in Radiologic Technology from 2009 to 2014. Unfortunately, she did not finish the degree due to financial constraints, work-study conflict, and transportation issues. A good opportunity came when the University of Perpetual Help SystemDalta in Calamba branch opened the same program which she grabbed to continue what she had begun. Due to proximity to residence and the help and encouragement of a former professor in her former school, she pursued her RadTech career in the Calamba Campus from 2015 to 2017. While studying, she helped her parents sustain her studies. She worked as a teller in Expressways and became an employee in a mall. Her intrinsic motivation kept her resilient in all the temptations to stop studying. He wanted to reach her goals in life and one of those is to study abroad. The motivation that she received from former classmates who already worked overseas and the promise of high-income earnings pushed her through to completion.

Nazandra did not only make it to the Philippine Licensure Exam but to the International level as well, getting the United Kingdom Licensure to be specific; making her a licensed professional locally and in a UK-based workforce requirement. Anytime soon she can fly to the UK and work there in the institution she applied to and have successfully passed.

For our 2022 RT Star, Nazandra, her graduation as a Radiologic Technologist in UPHSD Calamba, her passing of the RT Philippine License Board Exam, and her approval in HCPC UK License are three of the big milestones in her life that she is beyond grateful for. No words can express her high regard to all her former classmates who encouraged her to persevere, to all her former professors who supported her dreams, and to her parents who never missed to shower her with love, understanding, and financial support for the accomplishment of her long-awaited completion of the course of her choice.

employees, and former classmates spoke about her amazing attributes. Her mom confessed that Nazandra or “Leplep” as they call her in the family is kind and has a lot of dreams for herself and for her family. Although there are moments when she comes home stressed and moody, she shows resilience in facing life’s stresses. She is responsible and sympathizes with patients. Her classmate stated that Nazandra was an eager and hardworking student, believing that she is a living example of the quote, “the harder the battle, the sweeter the victory.”

Nazandra does not only impress her friends, former classmates, and loved ones but also her former professors. Dean Cielo Emmanuel Garcia witnessed Nazandra’s amazing traits. She called her a tough student amidst challenges in life and even an “epitome of a Perpetualite, a Radtech with character bound to surface even the strongest of the tide.” With all the good qualities she mentioned: friendly, humble, goal-oriented, and selfdetermined – truly the pride of the College of Radiologic Technology.

Nazandra’s stand out peculiarity placed her at the best version of herself. One legacy she can leave to the novice, to the young dreamers, and to the naive is telling this story and conveying that experience will eventually mold a person to her or his best self. “Everything was difficult at first, face them and overcome them”, she shows herself as an unstoppable person. She admitted her high hopes were once down but she stood again and claimed, “Rest if you must but do not quit or never give up”- showing she has weaknesses but is a totally invulnerable woman. “Everything comes to you at the right time. Do your part and do the best and God will take care of the rest” uncovering how she had become an unbreakable woman. She has been getting her ultimate strength from up above so she can rise above the storms of life. Indeed, Nazandra Meneses is a living embodiment of vitality.

ODYSSEY OF SUCCESS

People typically label one another as “successful” or a “failure”. But what makes someone successful or failure—perhaps the criteria of being called one? Being a millionaire at such a young age? When they are unable to complete their studies on time? Does the naive and younger version of you know what failure is? Does the journey that you are on now will lead you to “success”?

We can say that success happens in the form of progress, accomplishment, or simply being at our happiest moment in life. In reality, there are always problems to face but success may also mean that we are letting ourselves be challenged by something new to learn, and to grow in ways that are vastly different from what we used to.

As the youngest child, this man faced different struggles and challenges in his life. Just like most of us, he loves playing sports games like basketball and volleyball. He also loves playing esports games. He is a Dean’s Lister and an active officer in the College of International Tourism and Hospital Management, he is making his own name, hoping to be an inspiration for other students. He is also a filial son and brother who aims to do more for his family. He is a dreamer yet a doer. He has dreams and he is determined to achieve those no matter what, but just like every story, Cyrus Clyde Castillo’s story has its own twist too.

Clyde did once lose his way. He neglected his duties as a student – didn’t take his studies seriously and took his time for granted. He was engrossed in spending his time with his friends and playing games. Not until one day, he was asked what are his plans for himself and his future. It was like a wake

up call for Clyde. Years may have passed but it still feels like yesterday for him–the countless rues for his actions and disappointment towards himself. If given a chance, he would turn back time just to make things right but he knew he could not do it.

Clyde found his way back to the right path and is now working his way to his dreams taking one step at a time. Trying to get back for the things he had done in the past and set things right. Working hard to learn the things he is yet to know and fearlessly faces the struggles and challenges that are being thrown at him. Winning his battles with his main forces–his perseverance and dreams.

Using what he experienced, he wants it to serve as a lesson: Not to take things for granted, especially the greatest gift parents could give to their children–their education. It shall serve as a motivation to achieve the goal we are aiming for, even if we experience rocky roads and face our downfalls.

“Success will not come to you easily”.

One must face different levels and countless numbers of challenges but you must not stop. Success is the outcome of one’s perseverance, hard work, sacrifices, and dreams. People define success differently but for him, success means you face failures and you learn from them. Failing and losing your way does not mean it is the end; sometimes it is the beginning of a better journey. A path that people might not consider walking to but you bravely took a step and now on your way towards greatness.

MAPS AND A DANCE

And suddenly, she was lost.

She kept looking over the fence to see what’s more beyond the barbed wire. She’d never seen anything of this nature before which came unfamiliar to her. She tried to track down where things went wrong and which steps she took, hoping to find the fault within her well-curated plans. Sitting idly by the open window, she kept asking herself, “Now what?”

Ms. Nicolle Arciaga is an editor at ABS-CBN media company. She started working there in the same year that she graduated in college—2014. Her experiences of being a writer at an early age had given her the upper hand in knowing the how’s in the vast world of writing. Competing in school press conferences in elementary and becoming an Editor-in-Chief in high school for two years advanced her knowledge about writing and ignited a passion to pursue it as her future career. When her college era began, she juggled the responsibility of being a student, student assistant and leaderjournalist all at the same time. Years passed and she finally graduated with a degree in Communication, a Latin Award, and a Silver Medallion Leadership award. Her career as a writer began when she received a call from her current employer and offered her a job as a catalog writer, and eventually, an editor.

When someone turns a blind eye to you when you clearly need help, it helps us to open our eyes and awaken our senses that not all those we know who are close to being called family are going to extend a helping hand. Because of this, others may feel too discouraged and disheartened to dream a little. This isn’t the case for Ms. Arciaga, because she turned it into something more powerful and used it as her fuel to strive for success and as well as excellence. It was a driving force to finish what she started and aim for something bigger than herself.

Despite gaining such success, people are subject to change. We are always evolving and ever changing. Our necessities

and luxuries change from five years prior to where we are now, and we are haunted by the mistakes we’ve committed and opportunities we’ve never taken. It’s worth celebrating once we’ve finally arrived at the point we’ve always dreamt of reaching, but there’s a great threat that awaits us at that certain place if we come clueless with what we want after getting there. As a result, Ms. Arciaga shared the importance of living in the moment without neglecting the importance of setting short term and long term goals. There is no single rule and definition as to how we should live our lives, but having plans as our

maps for the time ahead could save us from any sort of heartache the world may bring. At the very least, our targets help us to navigate the present in preparation for the future.

Everything that happens to us and every moment that we share with one another are temporary. All we really have right this time is the present and enthusiasm for the days to come. Change can be a bittersweet thing, more so when you see the moment slipping away from your hand and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. No matter how many coins we throw into the well to make it last, it will never be enough, because all things shall come to an end. So it is our hope that we get to enjoy every bit of them while they last, for we will never be this young again – so sing, dance, play, travel, study, live your life, because things that truly matter to you and I right here and now can never be replaced.

Life is full of uncertainties, and our plans may not always work, but there is comfort in knowing that at the end of it all, we tried everything we could to put the pieces of ourselves together for brighter days ahead. And if a sigh is no longer working to make things lighter, and you find yourself in a situation in which you begin to question where else to go, please have courage, hold your ground, keep your head up high and know that the only way is up. Because just like Nicolle’s narrative, yours can be a tale of resilience and inspiration which may transcend to the generations that will come.

Core Values

Some might say, excellence is the fruit of hard work, that may be right. However, we can never deny the fact that success is a combination of Love of God, Love of Self, Family and Neighbor; Love of Country and Good Governance; Academic and Professional Excellence; Health and Ecological Consciousness; Peace and Global Solidarity; Filipino Christian Leadership; Value of Catholic Doctrine; and UPHSD and the Perpetualite. As a Perpetualite, it is indeed our Core Value to serve and contribute to our nation’s success with Catholicism as our doctrine and Perpetual Spirit.

MY LAST FUEGO

Fanning into Flame

Fuego! This is the battle cry of the whole Perpetualite community (let alone became famously heard during Rizal’s execution right before he was shut) which means “fire” and “passion”, such a big word that stirs up a fighting spirit—spirit that does not give up in striving to thrive and ready to conquer.

We all know that fire is used to stimulate others’ like fuel. Same as passion. A person having this thing is someone who is not easy to annihilate, someone who has grit, wanting more of finishing off the game than not, and very tenacious to its victory. So Fuego as a battle cry makes so much sense. But sometimes, as a person, we can run out of fire and passion like I did. We can be defocused to our ambitions and eventually give out. We can lose our grip on something we used to hang on to.

I am the type of a student who is always a leader since I was in elementary school. My mother molded and inspired me to be one. I also used to be taking home medals dangling from my neck every commencement exercise; an honor student as it is. I was able to exercise all of these up to my senior high school.

Coming to college, I did the same. I tried my best to achieve one of the Latin honors. I joined different organizations and fortunately got in as not just a member but as an officer. I exercised my passion in writing, thus, entering AB Communication and school publication as I was certain it would be of a big help to enhance my skills in writing, expanding my horizon in journalism and leadership. These are the dreams that I have been striving for since I was twelve, the dream that eventually turned into my passion and became my motivation why I started my college year right. I have been wanting to become a journalist and a broadcaster or something related to media.

My first two years of studying in this university were full-packed with enthusiasm. Who would not if you think you are one step closer to the profession you have long been aiming for? What transpired in those years were doable and enjoyable as they brought new experiences for me—opening new fields to love. I was fortunate to be entrusted with high positions in those organizations, especially being the Editorin-chief of the official college publication. Clearly, I was not just an ordinary student but I felt so blessed, I was so glad.

Although I could say I balanced them out, I thought I could pull everything off and that it would not be too hard for having conquered almost the same stuff in my previous years. After all these were what my passion brought to me. But later on, I realized that there is really a lot more to face here. Challenges happened. I thought entering multiple organizations would be bearable as I thought. Eventually in my third year in college, I ran out of energy as I poured everything already in my first two years. Overlapping schedules came along and tons of loads had to be dealt. I thought that would only be the problem until I experienced the most challenging part of it—I lost my drive, I lost the passion I had in me, I lost the thing that pursued me to the end, I lost concentration. It was heavy that I felt like a puppet that has no life nor emotion but has to keep going because I had to. Frustrations came to surface. Even though I tried so hard to function, I could not. I could not make quality outputs. I began losing what I loved doing. Not only because I could no longer achieve how I used to become a merited student but, more of I was so drained.

And this had me thinking that sometimes, what we love doing is also what is going to draw us a line to not finish the course. During the six years of my stay in this university, I came to a realization that as a person, even how passionate we are with what we are doing, we can run out of fire and eventually give out when we pour everything out to the point that nothing is already left, and the only thing we can do is to stop, and I did that.

Yes, I let myself stop because I had to but only for a moment, so I would like to regard it as ‘pause’. I paused not to end what I have started. I paused to calm myself, to process the whole ordeal, and to let myself breathe.

I did this to go back to the beginning, the reason why I started. I did this to see my visionary self, someone who was enthusiastic because she knew what she was pursuing. Sometimes stopping or I would say pausing is all that we need to be able to redeem ourselves again. If I continued knowing that I could no longer give more, I may not function anymore, and I may not be able to return as I was before—something that I will never allow because I do not want to affect other people.

We can pause to think again and remind ourselves why we are where we are in the first place and start from there, then, use what we have and do as much as we can as of the moment that we are beginning again..

Most of the time, we think that our drive comes from the products of our efforts, but we have to assess that fire also comes from the starting point; the reason why you began, the reason why you fought for your dreams for years, the reason why you wanted to finish the race.

This may be my last fuego as a student, but I am more driven to go forth. I will bring this aspect and will continue to shout and cheer with it as it will remind me how I once lost the fire but fanned it to flame again. I know that I will be needing this lesson for the next chapters that my life will bring. I know, a lot more has to be conquered, and what I learnt in this institution is something that I should bring to the end.

Writing outside comfortmy zone

Just like what the other staff would probably say, I did not join The Perpetualite Archives (TPA) to hold a position. Of course, I am very blessed and grateful for my experience of being included in the Board of Editors. But I joined the college publication simply because of my humble passion for writing and for the reason of wanting to learn more and do more than I ever could; to learn from everybody, from their different fields of expertise; to learn new things not only in writing; above all, to train myself to become a better writer than I am right now. I admit that I am not the best writer. Yes, I can write, as everybody can, but I know to myself that I need improvements, training and more experience. That is why I pull myself into this and here I am—writing my last article for TPA.

In my three years in the publication, I could say that I acquired sufficient knowledge in journalism and basic work etiquette which will be helpful for me when I will be transitioning already in the corporate world. I also experienced new things. After being recruited, my first year in TPA was quite calm and challenging at the same time. In 2019, besides writing articles, I was appointed as one of the Circulation Managers. It was quite challenging for me because I needed to engage and connect with different types of people inside the University. I was tasked to gather news, events and happenings. I am honestly an introverted person— a shy one, and I would rather be quiet than talk a lot. So, being one of the heads of the mentioned position, running into different types of people was a dare for me. But then, I was thankful. My reserved personality gradually decreased. Meanwhile, during my second year, I was blessed to be appointed as the Social Media Manager and Managing Editor at the same time. That period has turned my life upside-down as I experienced both handling the official social media page of TPA, and becoming a Managing Editor which, by the way, is a collective position for editor, secretary, treasurer, and PRO. It was not too hard. It was bearable as I started loving what I am doing. In fact, when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work anymore.

SWAN SONG SHIELLA MARIE BORDADOR 40

I can still remember working with our Editor-inChief during my first year of being the Managing Editor/ Social Media Manager. It was recruitment week in the publication and we are still looking for layout artist applicants. We only have a small amount of knowledge about graphic designing for a Facebook page post, thus, it became a challenge for us. We spent hours late at night just figuring out how this and that could work because we really needed to produce an output ASAP and so, we were that desperate. Then later on, I realized, “Oh, it’s really fun to explore new things and learn a lot outside of your comfort zone!”

TPA has taught me to be a responsible, committed and hands-on individual when it comes to work ethics and given tasks. I do hope that this is not my last time writing an article for a publication.

To all the aspiring writers and campus journalists, the only advice that I can give is to not be afraid to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. They say that growth will not happen overnight. Growth will not happen when you’re just inside the box, you need to get out of that box. Thus, I am one of the living proofs to that statement.

Going outside of my box and writing outside of my comfort zone is the best thing that has happened to me. Heads up, feet on the ground and hands on the pen. Padayon, campus journalists!

ANNIELYN EUGENIO

“You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated.” - Maya Angelou

It is not so hard for me to tell my story because I got used to doing it. I became an open book as soon as my life started to change unexpectedly. My life is not as interesting as others, but I could consider it as an inspiring one.

At a very young age, I was faced with different struggles in life. I was compared to my sister that pushed me to be more; people would tell me I could not do better but I conquered them all and proved them wrong. I did better. I thought this would be the hardest boulder that I would face until my biggest grief happened.

2015, the year I graduated in high school, was also the year my mom died. She was diagnosed with bone cancer. It just lasted a few months because her therapy didn’t go well. That was the most painful moment of my life. If only I could have her back just a little while to remember and feel again our most precious moments, because the grief that I felt always steals the beauty of my memories with her. It was just like a snap of a finger. Sleeping softly in her arms and waking up crying in her cabin. I feel that I don’t want to live anymore, how am I supposed to live without my mother? She is everything to me. She is my life. She’s the reason why I am trying to survive no matter how hard life is. It is true that death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, but if there is still love and memory, there is no true loss.

After my mother died, I continued to apply for college. I passed all entrance examinations that I took here in Laguna, but my sister decided to enroll me in Manila. My first stint as a college student was when I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts Major in Theater. Because the Communication program was already dissolved, I was dumbfounded and just consoled myself thinking that maybe after the first semester I could transfer. After several months, I enjoyed my course since performing is also what I love to do. I continued to study and after a year, I stopped because my sister gave birth to her second child, and I had to babysit because her shift was

over the night. I stopped for almost two years. That moment I was at the point where I didn’t want to go back to college because my batch mates were already graduating, I felt left out.

I was lost, I took my time for granted. But where should I really be? It was already 2018 when I decided to go back here to Laguna to restart my life. I applied again for college and looked for universities with scholarship offers and of course with BA Communication Program. Luckily, I ended up here at the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Calamba Campus. How did I make it possible to enroll without a big amount of money? I used my little savings from my small ‘rakets’ and applied for a Student Assistant Scholarship Program. And thanks be to God, I just graduated.

My name, Annielyn Eugenio, can be synonymous with this phrase most Perpetualites and my colleagues would recall – “ full-time Raketera”.

Yes, I host and organize events, I am a photographer, videographer, director, public speaker and a performer. I even do films, projects for students, I sell clothes and food sometimes. I also tried to be a crew member at food stalls; used to manage political events. These are the things I do to earn money. We are far from being rich and at my age, I don’t want to be a burden to my family. Now, I’m doing tutorials for Grade 3 and Grade 6 Students. I lost my Student Assistant Scholarship because of the pandemic which eliminated face-to-face classes, and I couldn’t render duty hours at my designated office. During my college years, I was able to lead several organizations. Allow me to brag and feel proud about these: I am the President of Tanghay Sining Theater Arts Guild, President of Circle of Emcees, Former Vice- President of Asosasyon ng Komunikasyon at Tinig ng Maka-Bagong Organisasyon (AKTIBO), President of Learning

Right now, I can say that despite all the challenges I’ve been through, here I am still standing and enjoying it while fighting to reach my dreams. God really has a purpose. He made me an empowered woman that can determine my choices in life. He blessed me with so many possibilities. He helped me overcome everything that was meant to destroy me. Why did I still decide to go to college even if I am already old and left out? Because it was our mother’s only dream, for us to finish college even if we are from a very poor family. That was her one and only wish and here we are still in the process of making that dream come true. My mother taught us how important education is in our lives. She instilled that having an education is a vital component in life, but before educating yourself you must learn to build your character first. Because no matter how rich, educated or privileged you think you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all. She always lectured that integrity is everything. And I firmly believe that everyone should practice being honest and show a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values in life.

This is Annielyn Eugenio, a writer, a woman of courage, a warrior of God, and forever will be a dreamer.

Individual Through Empowerment and Services (LITES), President of Student Volunteers, President of Graduating Class 2021-2022, Director and Writer of Maximi Communis Fabricatio and Katha Films, Former Managing Editor, Circulations Manager and News Editor now the Head Photojournalist of The Perpetualite Archives.

UNRAVELLING STORIES OF TRANSCENDING EXCELLENCE

Hi I’m Jerome Rodil, And first of I wanted to say that I was part of the first batch to go through grades 11 & 12, so when I finally got to college, I was ex pecting life to be more interesting, more fulfilling. I’m taking up Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, it is not my preferred course, but as time goes by Psy chology became interesting and falling in love with the program is just a mat ter of time, and I did, I fell in love with Psychology just before the Pandemic hits, and that love was the only motivation for me to continue studying, amid Covid-19 and poverty. People might say that Psychology is just mind reading and is easy compared to other courses, but I kid you not, it is complex, and without enough love and motivation of the subject, goodluck talaga malala.

So, a tip if you want to not just finish college, but finish college sane and men tally healthy and ready for the real world is that, rest. When is the right time to rest? Every time you feel tired, so don’t be guilty to pause. Laban para sa future!

Completing the nursing program feels like such a surreal experience. The sleepless nights, the hardships, the tears, all lead to this moment – this mo ment of fulfillment and triumph. If I were to do it all over again, I wouldn’t give it a second thought, because this experience has made me a stronger and wiser being. And I want to thank every single person I’ve encountered along the way because believe it or not, you have contributed to my growth. And last but not least, all glory and praise goes to my Heavenly Father.

Honestly speaking, my college life made me closer to my dream but not as smooth as I expected it to be. It was actually a like a roller coast er ride.

I, Danica Shane C. Bodino as an education student, can say that I am very happy with the experience I have had throughout my college life. Here, I also found out what my strengths and weaknesses are.

This college life of mine has been the best teacher for me to further enhance my skills in teaching and handling different situations and always remember that college life is about attitude, perspectives, relationships, and most importantly, how to live a successful and happy life.

Danica Shane Bodino

As a CE student of UPHSD-Calamba, my college life has not been easy, especially with online learning. I realized that satisfaction cannot be measured in a high grade, we used to think that grades always need to be high, for example 90+ above.

But in College we learned that the important thing is to survive and finish the semester without failing, and of course we know that we learn because of that.

After four years in college, I was strong enough to handle my own chal lenge. When I go out to college, I finally felt independent. On my first day of college, I remember playing harmless pranks on my friends. I miss spending time in the campus canteen, where a lot of students gather to eat and socialize. The best moments are when you’re having a good time with friends, taking pictures out of nowhere, and going on college trips, which are hard to find after college life. It’s important to enjoy col lege life to the fullest, but it’s also a balance between study and fun.

Hi everyone! I’m Joana Marie H. Vinoya, one of the pioneers of the K-12 program. I’d love to share my college life with all of you reading this! It started when I took the Bachelor of Science in Criminology degree at the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA- Calamba Campus year 2018. I’ve always wanted to serve as a police officer, but throughout my college years, I’ve become more knowledgeable in my chosen field, have many opportunities after finishing school, and can apply to any branch of the government. It is quite fulfilling being a Criminology student, and I constantly ensure that I am mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually capable of accomplishing my commitments.

In my life as a college student, I’ve become bolder. Things I’d never done before, like joining a beauty pageant and becoming an officer in the highest student organization, I did for the first time; in other words, I’m out of my comfort zone. However, every time I enter a new place, I always have the best experience. I believe that college is difficult since there are so many obligations and tasks to fulfill, especially as a student leader who must balance academics and extra curricular activities. Time management and discipline, check!

Moreover, others said that I should go for a course like Tourism and Education since I’m tall and capable of teaching but deep inside my heart belongs to my course, we should break stereotypes and not live in a patterned society. People have their own decision and choices which we should respect. Despite all the challenges and struggles that I’ve encountered, at the end of the day, you still have yourself. Do not degrade any college degree because every one of them has a contribution to our nation.

Joana Marie Vinoya BS IN CRIMINOLOGY

Before I entered College, I was all about the idea of focusing on the objective. I believed that I could do everything efficiently, even if I’m alone. However, these past 4 years of my College life taught me some thing I never thought I’d care about; knowing the worth of relationships.

The most important life lesson I learned is the value of rela tionships. It is the time when you make healthy friendships which might last even for a lifetime. Thankfully, I found mine.

They understood that the value of family never fades and they were the ones who stood with me through my ups and downs.

It was one hell of a rollercoaster ride, but I sure am glad I got to be a part of it.

In college, I learned to adapt to new and untested waters. I have experienced things for the first time, from ups where I met a circle that I can call when I’m in need, being accepted as an academic scholar by a private company, and downs to when the pandemic came and changed everything. I can’t help but be proud of myself for surviving and holding on to where I am now.

I’m Daniel Joseph G. Maningas, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, my expectations during freshman years is that I need to put extra effort on my studies. I felt that this time I need to take my studies seriously to have a better future and exceedingly contribute to the allied health industry. What have I learnt is that college is hard and sometimes I thought of giving up, but when I look at my parents especially my future, those are enough reasons to strive for in life. As the saying in pharmacy says, “Pain is temporary, but license is forever”.

My 4 years in college is full of learning and it is a roller coaster experience for me. I’ve been trying to fit in different group of people and It’s kinda’ tiring but I feel safe and recharged whenever I am with my choirmates. I’ve been part of the university choral for almost 6 years since senior high school until now and the first time I joined the choral group, I found a family. I never thought that I would be so productive and I can say that I’ve gain a lot of confidence that I don’t have before because of the exposure and of course with the support that I have with my family, friends and my partner.

And God is really good because he never leave me and guided me to the right group of people, to the right path and now I am a graduate of Business Administration Major in Marketing Management. Salamat Lord!

Time of War

Bethany Loyola Padayon Rian Villanueva

The wonders of life leave you breathless How a battle of a lifetime appears to be reckless

A dream that once seemed very far Is now in your hands, shining like a guiding star

Tracing back to the time of war All the way from gearing up and riding car An exchange of sacred prayers said in a small breath

Hoping this time there would be no death

Practicing daily for a little something Yet another rivalry leads to nothing Your chest tightens as you stood behind the door Weeping silently on your bedroom floor

Nothing was as loud as your doubt There’s no single thing to compare the drought

Questions cloud over your head; “Could there be a chance I’d be the best?”

Still climbing for a glimpse of success It soon occurred to you that all of this is part of the process That shattered glass and wrecked hope may injure our bones But a spirit that yearns will not be broken by the stones

You now gaze over the horizon Images play in your mind of a mansion Leaning at the thought; Perhaps dreaming and trying are not signs of recklessness For victory remains a miracle that is priceless.

Marami pa akong gustong gawin at mala man Nais sukatin ang sariling kakayahan Kung hanggang saan— Ang kayang ilaban at bitawan.

Limit Break

The goal is not to succeed It is not to see the end Not to finish every deed Nor to successfully fend It is not yesterday’s victory Nor is it the past’s reward Not what was in history Even if it was won hard

Perhaps it is in tomorrow What the future holds for us It may be fraught with sorrow Necessary to the cause

The goal is not in the present or past You cannot see it in what is done The goal will forever remain as vast It is to go even further beyond

The Extra Mile

Marie Therese Paniergo

You’ve now reached the finish line, And now everything feels like cloud nine. You get to look at your hard work, Admiring what you’ve done like an artwork.

But you stop in your tracks, Look back at your medals and plaques. You suddenly feel a fire being doused inside you, Slowly realizing that your yearning grew. You thought you were done, The yearning grew a tonne. You wanted more, What was it you were waiting for?

You wanted so much more, Your heart and mind wanted to explore. You wanted to go through the depths, No matter how many are the steps.

So you continue, Using every strength you had inside you. The journey would be long and tiring, But you look forward to the immense joy it may bring.

Small Greatnesses

There are already many stories of greatness Stories of the end game — of life achievements Stories of successes worth a lifetime

But to those who chose to get up of the bed On a rainy Wednesday morning To those who chose to still run On a race against time To those who chose to dry their tears And continue the fight

Even if those seem small Those too Are stories of lavish greatness
