The sixth installment of the annual Teachers’ Day celebration of Perpetualites, “Teacherrific”, was the second to be held virtual – but it never lacked the luster to spark love and appreciation for our Perpetualite educators.
Through the efforts of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASED) Student Council, Perpetualites paid tributes to their educators through Virtual Teacherrific 6 – an annual celebration of World Teacher’s Day, held on October 12, 2023, live at the Perpetualite CASED-College of Criminology Facebook Page.
The celebration filled with gratitude commenced with the CASED Student Council President Pixie Hope Divinagracia expressing her gratitude to the college councils who helped in the formation of this activity. On the other hand, SSC President Anniza Asiseo sent her greetings and
gratitude to the educators through her special message. School Director Dr. Ernesto F. Moreover, the Academic Heads and College Deans also delivered messages to their faculty members.
Different colleges had their spotlight in this tribute live broadcast as they prepared video greetings dedicated to their educators.
Apart from that, various student organizations of the university also participated. Altitude member Rose Ann Ramos serenaded the viewers with her rendition of “Glowing Inside” by Nikki Gil. On the other hand, Altas Fusion Krew hyped the vibe with their dance number.
A selected group from the Quantum Leadership class under CASED Adviser Mr. Terry Gil Gomez produced a short film

Joy Barcelona presented her experiences juggling her academics and extracurricular responsibilities as a college student leader. “Everyone has the potential to be a leader, but a servant leader must constantly engage in selfreflection,” she mentioned.
Following the inspiring talk, student leaders stretched their skills and abilities together through teambuilding activities such as flagmaking, cheer-making, and other interactive games which allowed for camaraderie to build among the participants.
As they finally concluded the PSLP, all student leaders were then eligible to take their oath and immediately take office as Council Officers through the Mass Induction
which was held in the afternoon. The momentous oath-taking was administered by the Guidance Counselor, Ms. Lerma P. Royo. “This will be another difficult year, but you are not alone. The most-awaited event of the year is finally back!
The University Week is back after a three-year hiatus since the pandemic, slated on May 2 to 6, 2023. Organized by the Supreme Student Council, four collegiate clusters and two departments of the Basic Education participated as they sent their students to different events of the said celebration. Business cluster hosted this year’s U-Week headed by its cluster head, Dr. Jayson Villapando.
HUMSS dominates Sports Fest 2023
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Cluster has accumulated the highest number of wins for the U-Week Sports Fest 2023. The said cluster won Men’s and Women’s Volleyball and Mixed Badminton. Moreover, they placed second in Women’s Basketball and Mixed Table Tennis, in which Senior High won. They also placed second against Business Cluster and secured their throne undefeated during the cup. On the other hand, the Technology cluster prevailed as this year’s champion of the Mobile Legends Cup.
The Perpetualites got the best glimpse of the 2023 Mr. and Ms. UPHSD Calamba Candidates during the Preliminary Competition on May 3, 2023, the second day of the University Week 2023, at the University Gymnasium. Wearing program uniforms and sash, 26 candidates from UPHSD-C Basic Education and colleges introduced themselves to the Perpetualites. As part of their introduction, they also delivered their advocacy as aspiring bearers of the coveted titles, in line with their program

This week will be incomplete without extending UPHSD’s hand to those in need, especially for patients who need blood. For the second time, the College of Medical Technology, in collaboration with the Philippine Red Cross, led its second blood donation drive at the EMC Hall of UPHSD Calamba on May 4, 2023, the third day of the U-Week 2023. The blood donation drive ended with 62 blood donations from Perpetualites and outside donors.

Jeepneys are icons of the Philippines. Jeepney vehicles are part of most Filipinos’ lives as the primary means of transportation to their itineraries. For some, it is one of the best sources of income especially those who classify themselves as the lower class. As time changes, people get to experience global warming and climate change. It contributes to air pollution as they omit smoke which is harmful to the people. Moreover, jeepneys get old. It becomes unsafe for both the drivers and passengers to use them. These points tell why there will be a shift from traditional to modernized jeepneys. It can be a good upgrade for the country’s transportation system. However, this opens major problems, especially for the below-minimum-wage earners.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board released a memorandum that states that PUV operators should join an existing consolidated entity by June 30. Otherwise, their operations will be halted. This situation made transport groups, specifically Manibela conduct a massive transportation strike. It will not be easy for operators to buy a transportation mode that costs an estimated double the amount of jeepneys. As students who use jeepneys as we travel to school, modernization
truly helps with the rising effects of global warming. The planet Earth gets warmer and warmer as time passes by. And so, having an electric-operated vehicle would help lessen pollution. However, looking at the lens of the drivers, it will not be as good as how we envision these changes. Even though jeepney drivers strive hard every day, the amount they get is insufficient for their necessities in life. More than that, some drivers are fathers at the same time. This is a huge problem for them as its cost is what you cannot even save through your allowance. The government should note that not all drivers are handled by an operator. Some are independent drivers who invested a lot in this vehicle. We should give these drivers enough time for them to save the amount needed to purchase modern jeepneys. Moreover, it will be great if the government invests in purchasing modern vehicles. People will be glad to see where their taxes go instead of being confidential. Modernization is great but it will take time for the country to achieve its eco-friendly government. To allot money for these innovations would help lessen the burden to the Filipino Jeepney Drivers. We cannot blame drivers for doing strike. It is their movement to speak up and let people in the top hear their voices.

The masses, especially those in the creative industry, went wild with what the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) have just been released. As they opened a new era of their entity, PAGCOR unveiled their 40th Anniversary Logo to the public last July 11, 2023. The expected praise from the masses turned out to be a nightmare. It drew flak on social media due to its design and the shocking amount paid for this design.
PAGCOR Chairman Alejandro Tengco said that the P-styled logo with blue and red shades incorporates the element of fire associated with energy, inspiration, passion, and transformation. It symbolizes the flame that ignites change and drives progress. The logo likewise reflects a beacon that stands as guidance, leadership, and direction. It represents a guiding light that helps people find their way. The moment I saw the news, the question that first came to my mind was, Why? On the other

hand, what shocked me the most was the cost of this so-called “masterpiece”. The logo costs 3 million. I wonder why the government settles and wastes money just for this design. Moreover, it is so suspicious that they hire a onemonth existing printing press as its design provider. Skeptic as it have been. However, what makes it unsatisfying is their happiness and honor of revealing it to the masses. For most, I cannot see a need for change with their emblem. As someone who is into creatives and sometimes, approves a layout for publication, I will not release this logo to the public. It is not competent enough when you put it in the public’s eye. Though there will always be bashers existing, revealing this will attract loud noise from the public. As the social media users welcome this, sadly, even Grade 1 can create this logo. Remember, this is a logo that will represent the organization. Looking at it, it seems lacking in creativity. This instance might discourage those who are working in the creatives. Imagine, you are

grinding night by night to give your clients the best output you have ever created then you see these higher-ups giving more credit to those who cannot even spend more effort in details. As a beginner who does not have connections, money is not instant. You have to work hard for you to survive. While we cannot do anything as it was launched already to the public, this case will be better if it wins a logo-making contest organized by the organization. Hopefully, the government will open this to the public as it provides opportunities, especially to the aspiring artists in the country. It will be more symbolic and worthy of a 3-million price as it is rooted in effort and hard work to convey a clear message and modern look.
radio, television, and the internet. It describes the many channels by which we communicate in society. And for the longest time, it has become an avenue for people who are trying to find their sense of self.
Then there’s media representation which is defined as how viewers are exposed to social constructs like gender, age, and ethnicity. There are aspects of the media that portray the reality of others which unearths the problems that regular people face on a daily basis. The other aspect is for those that promote utopia who are fond of thinking about the possible worlds we might have lived in. A touch of both, sometimes. The importance of media portrayal cannot be overstated; it is a factor that affects everyone and begins when we are young, and the minority in our society are severely impacted. For instance, despite its diversity, there are still a lot of tanskinned Filipinos in our country, yet the market for cosmetics and skin care products did not really meet their needs until recently. In previous years, the industry of television advertisements featured a ton of whitening goods that didn’t truly complement the skin tone of the average Filipino. During the time, it was incredibly rare to see a young, brown lady in a TV ad for a skin care company. Almost all young brown girls were raised believing that it was impossible for them to

appear in ads and on television due to the absence of diversity in media. To them, nobody else existed for them to emulate or draw inspiration from. The colorism that began with the colonists’ colonization of the Philippines is where the notion that whiter is better originated. Sadly, we have carried it forward even after they’re gone.
Other aspects of Filipino culture, such as how people show themselves and how they express their sexuality, had also been stigmatized in addition to their skin color. The LGBTQIA+ community has repeatedly been represented in the Philippine media, especially in the previous years, as nothing more than a laughing stock. These individuals have had their own sexuality used as a punchline in comedy skits that have appeared in films and on several noontime shows. Yes, they are amusing, but it is such a disgrace and a disrespect to them as people who not only have a great sense of humor but also go around with such grace and elegance. They are individuals who are capable of engaging in all manner of fundamental human activities,
such as speaking, writing, dancing, and loving. They should be respected and acknowledged for who they truly are rather than for something that has been made up by those who have got no single clue about the things they went through to get to where they are – because a life they have not lived is a story they cannot tell.
Many communities continue to go unheard, unnoticed, and unjustly portrayed in media. We are the ones who can help them, which is why it is absolutely essential that we discuss these issues. From seeking our identity to discovering our voice, from wondering if we should take up space to realizing that we are not alone, it is time we understand that media representation is everything. We all deserve to be heard, to be seen, and to have our stories told without prejudice or stereotyping. One where we grow in self-assurance, one where we may be secure in ourselves and believe that our stories are worth sharing, and one that fosters acceptance and understanding from others. It is important that we stand with the people who are marginalized, those who have their dignity and crown taken away because of their size, skin color, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Speak up, be an ally and make it known that their tale needs to be told in the proper light.

In 37 years, there have been at least 198 slain journalists in the country.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists’ (CPJ) in 2022.
The Philippines ranked 7th on the list of the most dangerous countries for journalist. Proven by the recent killing of a radio journalist, Percival Mabasa widely known as “Percival Lapid” that is known for calling out powerful individuals for corruption.
On October 3, 2022, Lapid, was shot dead on his way home, resulting a cry for justice and accountability for the heinous crime. It’s been less than four decades since democracy was restored yet the suppression and haunting of media workers have never ended and continue to rise.
Journalists in the Philippines are in constant danger as they are often targeted. They are supposedly the symbol of freedom but are imprisoned wrongfully; the one who calls out the unjust system and bearer of truth but is remarked as biased and harassed repeatedly; they scrutinize the oppressors but are
often slammed in court using libel laws. They are supposedly the voices of every Filipino but silenced without remorse. The killings of every journalist are an attestation of how oppressors wanted to bury the truth. To show the people how capable they are of silencing a voice who dares to raise at them. As the killings increase and the danger to every journalist’s life continues to grow, it a huge threat to the profession, to the country, and the right of the public to know. A free press serves as a watchdog, ensuring that those in power are held accountable and that the public is well informed. Journalists must not be in constant fear as the day goes by. The system is already broken and it should not continue being that way; there has to be change. The government must take action to improve the safety of each individual regardless of their profession; the accountable must be brought to the stand and the responsible must be prosecuted using the rule of law. The journalists are for the nation—they are for the people. To

end the cycle of violence and impunity, the broken system must be abolished and changed. The government and the people must continue to stand against the suppression of press freedom. They have to advocate, protect, and exercise the rights of every journalist. With this, maybe truth will serve to be a beacon of change and hope for the betterment of a country. A silenced press means that the stories of injustices will remain untold. Upholding press freedom is not just a “thing” for every journalist; it is a cardinal responsibility to protect the heart of democracy and a weapon against tyranny. The Community Extension Services (CES) of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Calamba Campus continues to uphold its commitment to helping its partner communities. The pandemic has changed the whole routine. However, the spirit of volunteerism and drive to help never stops. In an interview, CES Head Dr. Amelita Garcia said that currently, everything is more open. More student organizations and volunteers are encouraged to share their skills outside the UPHSD Compound. With that, UPHSD-C was able to produce these projects that provided learning, livelihood, and importantly, a life:
It is a project of the CES in partnership with the Student Volunteers Association, Learning Resource Center (LRC), Perpetual Kalikasan, and Arcadis, a private company. They provided tutorials for the whole school year to the Grade 3 students of Paciano Elementary School affected by the pandemic. As one of the CES Partners in this project, Perpetual Kalikasan extended its effort to educate the learners about protecting the environment.
Kinaadman, knowledge in general, was organized by the Psychology Society in collaboration with the Filipino Christian Living (FCL) class. The project educated the selected youth of the UPHSD-adopted community about mental Health, Personality Development, Human Rights, and Christian Living.
Asosayon ng Komunikasyon at Tinig ng Makabagong Organisasyon (AKTIBO) is back its yearly CES, IHeart Books. In partnership with the Education and Criminology, and selected mechanical Engineering students as volunteers, selected education students read stories to the grade 2 students of Paciano Elementary School, the participants of the program. Apart from that, they performed a short theater play in connection with the current situation of the learners today. This activity aims to encourage learners to read.
We lead as we write, we write as we lead theperpetualitearchives@gmail.com
It is a community extension project of the Batch Masigasig Class of 2023. They provided lectures to the grade 6 students of Paciano Elementary School about achieving their dreams. At the end of the activity, the graduating class chose two students who would be the Batch Masigasig’s scholars for the next four years.
UPHSD Calamba organized four blood donation drives for the academic year 2022-2023. The College of Medical Technology led two donation drives in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross Calamba Chapter for most donation drives and the Supreme Student Council during the University Week. JCI Enterprises and Dalta-Jonelta also partnered with the university to conduct this activity.
As Helpers of God, CES with SVA stayed put to its commitment and made themselves present in times of crisis. For this academic year, they organized a donation drive in response to the needs of Typhoon Karding and Paeng victims. Supreme Student Council, SVA, and the Basic Education department were their partners during Perpetualite in Action, a donation drive for the victims of Typhoon Paeng.
It is an academic service learning project led by the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) CES Coordinator, Mr. Terey Gil Gomez, in cooperation with CES and the Entrepreneurial Mind Course. 200 dishwashing liquid kits were given to the selected unemployed mothers for the adopted community of the university. Prof. Lalaine Rodrigo trained the participants in creating a dishwashing liquid. The program was also brought to the UPHSD Community in Mindoro in cooperation with CES UPHSD Calamba and Las Piñas Campus.
It was initiated by the Business Cluster which benefited the community of Sitio Manggahan, Paciano, Calamba City. Rooted by the commitment to providing opportunities for self-employment and income-generating activity, the Business Cluster taught the beneficiaries about making Atsara, as well as the Safety standards and the essence of this project. Along with the Business Cluster, selected residents from Sitio Manggahan sold the Atsara to the Perpetualite Community.

“As a history of this program, Grandsoul Japan signified their attempt to partner with the University of Perpetual Help to help, at least, specifically (the) alumni of Perpetual,” said Mr. Roderick Ulep, the Linkages Officer and the Officer-in-charge of the Japanese Caregiving Program of UPHSD Calamba – the first-born child of the blossoming partnership between Perpetual and Grandsoul Japan.
It all started with an agreement between the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA - Calamba and Grandsoul, to which the latter has funded the construction and equipment of the new Japanese Nursing Care Program. It is a training center that is designed as a replica of a caregiving facility in Japan – intended to simulate the caregiving activities being done in Japan; showing first-hand the Japanese way to care.
The pioneer batch of the program commenced their virtual class in March 2022 beginning with learning Nihongo, he Japanese dialect required by future caregivers to easily communicate with their clients. Students are
trained to provide service and adopt some of the Japanese cultures so they can easily blend well with the customs of their future workplace.
“I would like to emphasize that this facility, our programs are purely for training,” mentioned Mr. Ulep. Through this program, Grandsoul aims to help, not just the Perpetualite community, but the Filipinos as well.
After a six-month period of training, students shall take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test before undergoing the final interview. Once selected, Grandsoul will be responsible for covering all processing fees, including the visa.
THE INAUGURATION
It had been almost three years of construction before a sturdy Japanese Caregiving facility that was once pictured as a glimmer of hope to aspiring caregivers came to fruition – and on April 21, 2023, the anticipation came to its hype as the first Japanese caregiving training facility in the Philippines situated near the heart of the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Calamba Campus was launched to everyone’s applause.
In his message of acceptance, Grandsoul Japan Co. Ltd. President Mr. Atsushi Tsujimura emphasized their mission of helping Filipinos through this facility. “Today is the new beginning for us, and from now on we will
release a a lot of human resources from this facility to work as caregivers in Japan. Our goal is to contribute to the happiness and welfare of people in both the Philippines and Japan through our business,” Tsujimura said.
Present in this historic activity were the administrators from both parties and other external guests witnessing the ceremonies: University President, Dr. Antony Jose M. Tamayo together with TESDA IV-A Regional Director Toni June Tamayo; UPHSD Executive Vice President, Dr. Marjorie Tangog; NHRFI President, Mr. Dan Navarro; UPHSD-Molino School Director, Dr. Reno R. Rayel; UPHSD-Calamba School Director, Dr. Ernesto F. Ramirez; Grandsoul Japan Co., Ltd President, Mr. Atsushi Tsujimura; First Secretary from the Embassy of Japan, Chihiro Kanno, and Grandsoul General Manager, Mr. Kimio Nakatani.
The partnership of the University of Perpetual Help and Grandsoul Japan Co. Ltd. is more than a facility being built, an agreement being inked, or a job being offered after finishing the course; it is actualizing dreams of aspiring Overseas Filipino Workers to go abroad and showcase how the “Tender, Loving Care” brand of Filipinos would blend well with the systematic, advanced, and disciplined caregiving program of Japan – an enrichment of rich heritages fusing through time.

The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA - Calamba campus officially and finally opened its doors to all Perpetualites for the full face-to-face academic year. Some students are looking forward to experiencing college life on campus, while others are dreading this day, both of which are extremely valid.
But whether we like it or not, that day has finally arrived, and there’s nothing we can do but prepare ourselves. Have you already figured out your essentials? Well, some students are very much ready for the semester, and we have asked a number of Perpetualites about their current must-haves in the new normal setup.
Since we are already having our full face-toface classes, Perpetualites’ first essential is a pair of notebooks and a pen. Even though we are now deep into technology, some professors still prefer their students to answer on a sheet of paper. Indeed, one could never go wrong by carrying these two items in their bag.
Students spend most of their time at the campus. Some may even stay until the evening, so when asked about their musthaves, they never forget about their allowance. Not all students are able to pack their lunch, so they only rely on the school canteen or other places nearby to have their lunch. An allowance gives them that kind of freedom.
We have mentioned that students spend most of their time at the campus, and most likely, there are certain moments where we have vacants before our next class. That is why, when the Perpetualites were asked about another item in their must-haves, they did not forget to include their phone. This helps them not just ease their boredom, but also get updates about their next class.
We can’t say that the COVID-19 virus is completely gone, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Students keep extra facemasks just in case the one they are wearing wears off. It is also a good practice to replace it after a few hours as part of maintaining good hygiene. This is to avoid germs and dirt from staying on our skin, which does not really end well most of the time.
A cosmetic pouch made it to the list of the top five must-haves for Perpetualites. This does not only apply to girls, but to everyone who cares about their appearance while on campus. Some students find it therapeutic to redo their makeup before class, and that really matters. We’ve gotta do what we’ve gotta do to cope with the recent changes. And, besides, to look good is to feel good.
If you saw that one of your essentials made it to this list, then that’s a good thing! You aren’t alone in dealing with the adjustment period of being at the campus as well as your ways to cope with it. Despite the hardships and challenges we face, we hope you’ll still have fun creating meaningful memories that you can bring with you wherever you go, and that you get to keep them in your heart. We wish you the best of luck on your endeavors for this semester and know that we are rooting for your success in every way possible in this extraordinary journey we call life.
“The people do not complain because they have no voice; do not move because they are lethargic, and you say that they do not suffer because you have not seen their hearts bleed.” ― José Rizal, Noli Me Tángere
Maria Clara at Ibarra is a 2022 Philippine historical portal fantasy series by GMA Network. The pilot episode aired on October 3, 2022. The series gained popularity locally and internationally. It is without any doubt that the netizens fell in love with the series and took everyone by storm. It’s a historical and authentic Filipino classical novel. Who would have thought that Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo would be told by the present generation in this creative way? Netizens find it quirky and uncommon to watch a series inspired by a famous historical fiction written not just by a writer but also, by a hero. The interaction of modernity and classical conservatism is amusing.
When Maria Clara Infantes, or more known as “Klay” in the story, entered the picture, her Gen Z spirit and upbringing make the scenes more entertaining. Her way of communicating with the characters in the novel and their reactions to her quirkiness is humorous and an instant hook to the audience. Moreover, the portrayal of characters is well-executed and justified. Their chemistry is kindred. Although others are not fans of it, feedback is evident—people are magnetized by the story and the characters. This series has given
them the spotlight and recognition they deserve. Dwelling deeper than the superficials, it is what lies beyond that makes MCAI a trending topic during its airing dates. The story ignites nationalism; it tells thousands of messages about how Filipinos fought for the freedom we are enjoying. The novel recreated with a Gen Z taste is tangible evidence of cruelty, oppression, courage, and the victory of liberty. A series that talks not only for entertainment but as a reminder of how brave and persevering Filipinos are, it depicts how our ancestors fought and sacrificed their lives to free our country and fellowmen from slavery and oppression during the Spanish Colonial Era. We cannot change the flow of these novels. However, it was explained that this is Klay’s story. Klay’s entrance changed the flow but the ending went almost the same as the novels. Audiences were attached to the drive and bravery of Klay to change the system of the past. Women were deprived of freedom and access to education way back then. Thus, showing the men in the past that women are human and deserving to lead, be knowledgeable about everything, and live their dreams in life. This is a time travel anyone could somehow dream of—to find someone in the past or future that the present did not give them. Klay’s mission is only to learn about Noli and El Fili but she met Fidel. His existence made Klay’s journey even more magical.

K-drama gained and continuously grew its popularity worldwide. Statista Research Development shows that in late 2021, more than 49 percent of respondents in 18 countries agreed that Korean drama is renowned for its superb value and storyline. Overall, approximately 77 percent of respondents believed that K-dramas are popular even outside of Korea. With that, The Perpetualite Archives (TPA) asked their fellow Perpetualites about their taste and pulse in K-dramas. Here are their top three favorite K-dramas:

The storyline revolves around an ex-con, Park Sae Ro Yi who opens up a street bar in Itaewon and is eagerly seeking revenge for his family and father’s death. What makes this drama in the top 1 is that, compared to other K-drama series, it has a more realistic approach, even if it is a typical rags-to-riches story. The diversity of characters also adds flavor to the story. It reflects how people live in society.
It does not only center on the protagonist’s side story. Every angle of the characters is carefully represented. From Park Sae Ro Yi who is an ex-con and his grudge over his father’s death, business struggles, and his broken dreams to be a policeman, there are also characters who represent transgender, foreign people, an ex-con who wants to try again in life, people who sacrifice their career over love, those seeking father’s validation, and elders who are still finding their true love. It might look like a lot is going on in the series, but it makes the story compact. It also adds to the fact that the actors and actresses are not just renowned in the industry; they also did a great job portraying their characters.

This is a Korean adaptation of a Hollywood movie starring Zac Efron—17 Again, but instead of a movie, they make it a series. The story is all about a 37-year-old man on the brink of divorcing his wife who finds himself trapped inside his 18-year-old body. He begins a new life under a new identity to be closer to and protect his children.
When the starring role is given to Lee Do-Hyun, expect a bucket of tears to fall when he acts. It might seem fanatical, but that is how good an actor he is. There are a lot of rookie actors in this series but you wouldn’t notice it at first glance because they do justice to their characters. And since this is an adaptation, there’s a slight discrepancy from the original storyline because Koreans give importance to their culture and it is always a must to showcase that, which is a good thing. Other than that, the story is almost the same.
What makes this series a good fit for the second spot is its life lesson. Although it is a work of fiction, they didn’t fail to showcase the reality of getting married at a very young age, especially for those in the lower class of society; the struggle to pursue one’s dream, and family conflicts.

It is a coming-of-age romantic comedy about ex-lovers who broke up with the promise never to see each other again. However, the documentary they filmed 10 years ago went viral, and they are forced to face the camera again. At first, the story looks like it is just a light drama between ex-lovers, but as the story gets deeper, it reveals that it is not just a typical puppy love story that ends with a breakup. It has so much to reveal that will make you understand each character in the story. It would be a spoiler to unveil it, so you’d better watch it by yourself. More than that, the casts match really well, exploding their chemistry throughout the series.
If you are someone who wants to dip their feet into the vast world of K-Drama or someone who is looking for a new series to watch, you may want to consider the ones up on the list. After all, they wouldn’t be recommended by the Perpetualite community if they weren’t up to anything good.
What runs in your mind at midnights?
Midnights is the tenth studio album by Grammy multi-awardee and singersongwriter Taylor Swift, which was released on October 21, 2022, under Republic Records. The release of the album was announced at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, marking her new album after Evermore and Folklore. The Midnights album originally consisted of 13 songs, but Taylor decided to release the Midnights (3 AM Edition), which contains seven songs. According to Taylor, these songs were written on their way to Magic 13. In this review, we’ll take you to the songs that make this album even more magical:
The Great War
In our lifetime, we might have prayed and wished for someone who will stay and always choose us despite our shortcomings—the one who is ready to fight and win every challenge with you.
“My hand was the one you reached for all throughout the great war” knowing that you two would reach for each other’s hand—be it in every defeat and glory. A kind of love that withstood all the storms, who stayed and fought every change of seasons, the hope in every bloody war.
Bigger Than the Whole Sky
This song likewise deals with the theme of falling apart but explores it in a different way. At the start, Taylor Swift sets the scene: She is crying while lying on the ground. Despite being vague and obscure, the lyrics of “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” are effective for this precise reason. Taylor’s words are so heartbreaking that they can be related
By Rian Villanueva and Samantha Prele
to a variety of sadness, even though it’s unclear what she is singing about.
Paris
This song is really enjoyable. In “Paris,” the topic of falling in love is covered. This song has the vibe of a love montage scenario where the pair is looking for hiding spots. The song has an air of brilliance, lightness, and ease that is consistent with the
sensation of falling in love. Swift’s music has always been and continues to be based on narrative techniques, and I truly like that. I almost feel like a single song could be the basis for an entire movie.
High Infidelity
This is for the people who are in a longterm relationship but settled for the bare minimum their partners gave them. Being in a relationship where you don’t know what to do anymore, not until you meet someone who gives your life back—the one who brings you back to life. And as Taylor said, there is a way to kill someone you love— slowly yet painful, and It is not loving them enough. Now, you are just watching that person from afar, cause you could’ve been a good partner when you were together.
Glitch
This song is for the girls who are not afraid to get attached and fall for someone even if with the possibility of losing them in the end. To the girls who don’t have the intention to fall and just want to stay as friends but fate had to step in. “I thought that we had no chance”. It is for the girls who are shooting their shots and taking their chances.
Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve
These are three of the magic 13 tracks of Midnight:
You’re On Your Own, Kid
This masterpiece is one of the most relatable songs, regardless of age. Understanding this piece makes one grasp how vulnerable and emotional they can be. It could be a depiction of how you tried to fit in, to be liked and accepted in various forms, to give everything you had, trying to carry the “responsibility” you weren’t responsible for to begin with, and yet at the end of the day, you are hoping to be saved by “a perfect kiss”—someone who could make you feel complete, validated, and enough. But then reality sets in, and you realize that no one will save you from this mess except yourself, because from the beginning, you’ve always been on your own. So, do not be afraid of being your own person, for being your own savior—you will lose something along the way, but as you take a step forward, you will gain something— something that no one can take away from you, and that is you, being your own.
Bejeweled
“I am the main character,” this song exudes, and Taylor Swift did an excellent job. Everyone deserves to shine, and a diamond should indeed shine. The girls who were denied the chance to flaunt their beauty and confidence—just women reclaiming their thrones after a long and exhausting battle with themselves.
Karma
This song is replete with laments about the passing of youth, fostering the connection to purity culture. The thought that if someone takes advantage of you when you’re young, people will view you as wrecked. In short, Swift expresses her remorse over a relationship with a person who fundamentally altered her when she was so young., “Give me back my girlhood; it was mine first,” she pleads in the bridge, and that statement rips us to pieces.
Dear Reader
There is a message for all of us in this album, as we each remember the ghosts of those midnight moments of loneliness, regrets, and love. Taylor Swift reminds us that they define who we are and that we are still here, just as she is with her most thoughtful album to date: “You should find another guiding light, guiding light, but I shine so bright.”
Her caustic, alter ego “Karma” is in a more forgiving frame of mind, relishing her opponents’ inevitable retaliation. Swift talks about an ex-boyfriend in this song, but she changes the focus. In this situation, karma works better by giving her beautiful experiences than by punishing her. Her karma is a cause for celebration. In spite of all the charming examples, such as “Karma is a cat purring in my lap,” the most important phrase is “Ask me what I learned from all those years,” “Ask me what I earned from all those tears,” and “Ask me why so many fade but I’m still here.”
Midnight’s late-night setting is a clever plot device that offers plenty of room for variety in sound and subject matter. Midnight is a politely reset genre that frequently suggests taking a captivating new turn. Even if we confront our deepest thoughts while lying alone in bed at night, it’s also the best time to go out and party. Ultimately, the album shows how messy, intense, and maddening latenight thoughts and feelings could truly be.
A Book Review By Bethany D. Loyola
WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
“The world respects people who think they should be running it.” – Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo claims to be a historical fiction and romance novel written by American author, Taylor Jenkins Reid. The novel, which was released in 2017, follows the story of a “film legend and 60s IT Girl” in Hollywood. Years after her retirement, she decided to give a final and tell-all interview to a journalist, Monique Grant, where she revealed how she rose to fame, her “ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love.”
In the past couple of years, the book has made its way to the peak of stardom and continuously catches the interest of readers, despite the fact that it was released nearly six years ago. It is constantly talked about on the internet, which is very telling of its growing fanbase. As someone who has read the book recently, I can tell why the internet is smitten and captured by Evelyn’s story. And in this book review, allow me to share them with you.
• The author’s writing style is simple yet captivating
The writing style that the author used is simple and straightforward while still being heart wrenching and extremely moving. Reid tells Evelyn’s story in a way that will keep the readers’ attention, and cause them to turn pages after pages. It is also very noticeable how short the chapters are, which signifies the pace of the story and could potentially hold the reader’s attention. Reid made sure that the parts of the story that needed to be talked about were highlighted, and left out the ones that didn’t have as much significance as the former. This makes the story fast paced and, as a result, creates excitement for the reader to finish the book.
“Me and you, true blue.”
• Exposes the complexity of human emotions, desires and actions
Reid created a character who proves time and time again she is a warrior and a survivor who is undoubtedly flawed and may even be considered morally gray. Some may find her character very unlikeable due to the decisions she has made, but there’s certainly something about her that thirsts us even more for her — and she quenches it just right. Hugo’s character is very multidimensional, and when someone takes their time to know her, where she came from, and how people treated her, they will know just how very human it is of her to do what she’s done. This story exposes the truth that there are certain moments in which we have to fight tooth and claw with life, and where the most compassionate thing to do is to put yourself and the people you care about above all else.
“Do yourself a favor and learn to grab life by the balls, dear. Don’t be so tied up in trying to do the right thing when the smart thing is so painfully clear.”
• Great representation of sexual orientations and queer romance I truly think this is one of the beauties of this book—the main character is bisexual, and it plays a vital role in the story. It’s amazing how the author sent out a message to represent sexual orientations and attempted to remove the stigma and negative connotation about bisexuality. The queer romance that exists in this story is so pure and not self-serving. It represents just how real and genuine it is, and it is never less of a true love compared to the one shared by two heterosexuals. It transcends understanding and time; it knows pain and heartbreak; it knows love and endurance; it knows no bounds nor gender;
and it will make you feel and see it even if you refuse to.
“Evelyn, who was your great love? You can tell me.” Evelyn looks out the window, breathes in deeply, and then says, “Celia St. James.”
As we come to the end of this book review, I’d like to share that I proudly gave this book a five star rating. Considering all the factors I have mentioned, it is a no-brainer that this novel became one of my all-time favorites.
This book showed me that our heart, even in the midst of a bloody battlefield, even if it’s shattering in a million pieces, is still capable of loving. It is only with a brave heart that someone could admit to whom her heart belongs — voice quivering and all.
If you are someone who is thinking about reading this spectacular story of Evelyn Hugo, there’s one thing she would like to tell you:
“Tell everyone that it is the people I miss. Tell everyone that I got it wrong. That I chose the wrong things most of the time. When you write the ending, Monique, make sure the reader understands that all I was ever really looking for was family. Make sure it’s clear that I found it. Make sure they know that I am heartbroken without it.”
What’s life after graduation?
You might be wondering how tables will turn and fates will unfold after you turn the tassel right and leave the portals of your Alma Mater. When you graduate, are those sleepless nights, tight schedules, and running after deadlines really done? Or are they just starting to get worse? As you read this, you might be standing on the brink of an unimaginative void without any idea of what lies beyond the so-called “real world”. But hey, fellow Perpetualite, these people were once in the exact situation and while it’s true that many forms of crises happen as you pursue your professional career, some exude a different level of passion for their craft and stand out to simply be the “best” – and you might just be trodding the same way to become one.
In a momentous gathering of Perpetualite graduates as part of the University’s Silver Founding Anniversary celebration dubbed as “Grand Alumni Homecoming” which took place last December 3, 2022, at the University Gymnasium, more than memories were cherished and laughter was shared as the first cut of the prestigious ALTA Outstanding Perpetualite Alumni Awardees were also named and revealed. The recognition is given to Perpetualite alumni who made significant contributions in their profession; substantial members of the community; and true embodiments of the Perpetualite principle as “Helpers of God” –an inspiration and epitome of excellence that the University has produced.
If you’re familiar with the songs “Cool Off” and “Time In” by Yeng Constantino, or the “Selfie Song” of then-popular vlogger “JaMich”, or the Himig Handog 2016 Grand Prize Winning Song “Dalawang Letra”, then you might be interested to know that the brilliant mind behind the heartfelt compositions is a product of our institution – Mr. Davey Ryan Edward Langit, more known as “Davey Langit”. A graduate of the Mass Communication Class of 2012, the young musician has exhibited his remarkable prowess not only in making songs with meaningful lyrics, but turning some of them into his original music: “Idjay” which won several Awit Awards Citation, “Oryang” and “Dungo” recognized in the Star Awards for Music, and “Gitna” which was used as a soundtrack in a mini-series “Mga Batang POZ”. For young Perpetualite musicians and dreamers, the industry may appear uncertain and challenging, but Davey Langit is a testimony that the University hones people, just like you, to stand out and be the melody of your own song. Davey’s music resounds not just his heart and soul, but his passion that conquers challenges, disbeliefs, and opportunities.
“Helper of God” – in so many ways and chances, we, Perpetualites, are just too immersed with this term. But to emulate this mantra in actions and deeds, it takes an exceptional man who, despite having a lot on his plate, never falters to go back to the University and bring with him the passion to help, care, and serve – Mr. Jose Alberto Odpaga or “Sir Jao” to the Perpetualite community. Currently serving as the President of the Alumni Council and Founding Adviser to Perpetual Kalikasan, Sir Jao, belonging to the pioneer Computer Studies Class of 2001, is a staple name when it comes to community outreach activities in and out of the campus. He served as an officer of various civic and ecological organizations, most notable for receiving the CSR Youth Awards of the Benita and Catalina Yap Foundation. Guerrero, or “Sir Joseph” comes to be. Her voice in a classroom echoes softly like a caring figure to her learners, but more than her sweet image is an enthusiast in the field of science and computer industry – Dr. Ma. Crystal E. Orozco or “Maam Tal” to her colleagues. Maam Tal, a graduate of the BS Computer Science Class 2004, rose to become one of the prominent instructors in the field of Information Technology, being a college instructor in her home college. Aside from selflessly imparting her knowledge to the next generation of IT learners, Maam Tal is also a dedicated learner in her own right, having finished her doctorate in Information Technology, establishing herself as a trainer and certification holder of various IT-related courses; a Microsoft Office Specialist, Mikrotik Certified Academic Trainer, among others. The future is science and technology, and if you’re a Perpetualite who sees yourself enthusiastically immersing in the ever-evolving culture of IT, Ma’am Tal is the light that will show you how it’s done, the Perpetualite way.
Leaders aren’t just confined to civic organizations, clubs, or congregations, because they are found everywhere, especially in the hospital scene. Someone who believes and works hard not only to best himself but to also push forward the health and medicine industry moved Dr. Nicolo Andrei Añonuevo, or “Doc Nico”, to the top. As the Associate Director for Nursing Professional Practice, Career Development, and Standards, the standout of the Nursing Class of 2006 provided opportunities for aspiring nurses to develop themselves into experts and enthusiasts in the field, helping them hone their careers in the medicine field. Doc Nico is a respected leader of various organizations of Nursing in and out of the institution where he belongs, including the Alumni Council where he currently serves as the External Vice President. Despite earning multiple Doctorate and Master’s Degrees (in Business and Nursing), Doc Nico never forgets to look back on his humble beginnings, to what he considers one of his primary abodes, Perpetual, as he is a frequent speaker in career talks and nursing seminars in the institution. For Perpetualites to witness how an accomplished young man always pays it forward to the next generation of nurses in the University, a career like Doc Nico’s is something that anyone would regard as exceptional.
The Engineering field is as vast as its programs and people with so many opportunities waiting for anyone who is open to grab them, or even create them, and the Outstanding Engineer Engr. Richard N. Marcelo or “Engr. Richard” is no stranger to it. Having finished his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering Major in Construction Management, Engr. Richard, a proud product of the Civil Engineering Class of 2011, took the position of Assistant Vice President and Head of Credit Collection/Retention and Title Conversion. From his humble steps, he never stopped pursuing more and became an active member of various engineering and surveyors’ organizations. His accolades kept pouring as he was awarded the Special Commendation as Young QS Ambassador, Certificate of Excellence Awardee, and a Lifetime Member of the Scientific and Technical Research Association. Despite these achievements, Engr. Richard always manages to allot time to assist in some activities where his participation and expertise are being requested by his Alma Mater such as Career Mentoring and seminars. He never settles and always aims for more while keeping his head close to those who helped him get to where he is now – a figure young Perpetualite Engineers can mold themselves from.

Sometimes, your fate will bring you to unimaginable places and you’ll be planted in soils that will help you bloom better than you could ever expect, and that is exactly how Mr. Kietichai Phunthumjinda or “Sir Kieth” became outstanding. A graduate of HRM Class 2004, Sir Kieth went back to Thailand and tried his fate bringing with him the knowledge and competencies he gained from the institution. With his innate charm and undeniable skills, he was appointed as the Assistant Manager and later became the Sales Manager and Assistant Director of Sales in Bangkok, Thailand. Sir Kieth may have devoted the majority of his professional years outside the borders of our country but he never fails to regard the humble contributions of the University in his feat, and he always makes sure to give a time when the institution calls him. His path toward becoming one of the top employees of his company was never easy, especially since he journeyed outside the country, but it is a statement of how Perpetualites are prepared to conquer more than what they think they can. Sir Kieth is simply made to be the best.
Their successes were never an overnight battle with all wins and no losses. They are stories of perseverance, hard work, and commitment not only to themselves but to the community where they belong. And to you, our dearest Perpetualite, the journey after you receive your diploma isn’t just about how you will be doing well in your field or how you will earn a living; it is a wondrous path of building yourself for the betterment of the society where you belong; it’s how you will offer what you have for the sake of others; and it’s how you will look back from your humble beginnings and carry them as you traverse the “real world”. These Outstanding Alumni are the finest epitomes of the institution’s commitment to developing products that are refined to conquer the world and be the best in their chosen field, and your path is no way different to becoming outstanding. All you need is an ounce of skills, confidence, belief, passion, and a liter of empathy to become the greatest that you can be.
Now what, are you ready for your exceptional life after graduation?

For three days a week, I get lost as I continuously seek; A piece of Zen among the bleak—A bit of beauty among the freaks.
For three or more times a day, I walk back and forth the hallways. At this wrong place, I must stay— Only to lead myself astray.
For every three passing hours, I am slowly losing powers, Like the wilting of a flower; I just stoop and gently cower.
As if dread was a person, With no clear directions On life and careers Ridden with fears.
This may not be hell, Nor heaven as well. This must be a purgatory, Just a limbo full of worries.
For three days a week, This is how I am. For three days a week— I am damned.
World spinning, people rushing, They seem to know where they are going.
The road before me seems so long— I wonder if this is where I belong.
Not knowing what lies ahead, Paths that are uncharted. Everyone is moving forward; Fear and doubt creep into my head.
Now, is it alright to feel this way? Through the lows and highs, for every what and whys— Do I get to choose where I could cry?
To leave the burden of countless
heavy sighs.
I may wander and get lost along the way,
In the end, I hope to find a place where my heart could stay. Though I may stumble and fall, I know I must conquer it all.
To have the courage to begin again— Without a single dread of what’s uncertain. As I embrace my own pace, I will catch up soon and be right on track—to finish the race.
