T

he South Africa Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) has not been allowed to get involved in a legal process that could end in the association losing the land it leases to operate on in Constantia. But the association says it will appeal and try again.

Sarda applied to be an intervening party in a legal challenge to the awarding of erf 142 in Constantia to the Sadien family in a land claims settlement.

Mokotedi Mpshe, acting judge in the Land Claims Court, ruled against Sarda’s application to intervene. An intervening party is regarded as a third party who intervenes in a case in which it has an interest. Such an intervening party may join either the plaintiff or defendant’s side.

Belinda Thom, Sarda chairperson, says the non-profit organisation will apply for leave to appeal this decision in the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Mpshe’s ruling was delivered in September last year, after he heard the application in the High Court in August, but his decision was conveyed to Sarda’s counsel only last month. Sarda has 14 days to apply for leave to appeal the judge’s decision.

The ruling is part of an ongoing legal tussle in which Sarda says it is fighting for its existence in Constantia after the Land Claims Court awarded the land on which Sarda operates to the Sadien family in March 2013.

The family was initially given a 10-hectare piece of land, but it was

smaller than what they were dispossessed from, so the court amended its order to an equivalent piece of land. This led to an 8.9-hectare portion of erf 142 being transferred to the family.

Sarda has operated on this property for more than 30 years.

Sarda was not notified at any stage of the change in ownership of its leased land. The association only became aware of this when a concerned neighbour and a newspaper reporter alerted it.

Sarda offers free therapeutic riding lessons to children and adults living with physical and learning disabilities.

There are more than 180 beneficiaries of this specialised service who reap the physical and psychological rewards it offers.

The social benefits of its programme positively affect the participants’ communities over the greater part of Cape Town, the association says.

In the 43 years of Sarda’s existence, the organisation’s good work has improved the lives of hundreds of riders, their families and the communities they live in.

Thirteen special needs schools in Cape Town recognise Sarda’s value and apply for their scholars to be included in the therapeutic riding programme every year.

Sarda says it has been treated unfairly and unjustly by the original and subsequent judgments.

In a previous hearing in 2014 Thom explained that the land was awarded to the Sadien family on the basis that it was vacant, which it was not, so it should not have been awarded as vacant land to a land claimant.

Donations boost firefighters The volunteer firefighters of the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management have bought seven new water trailers – a purchase made possible by residents and businesses who donated in a radio-thon spearheaded by Primedia Broadcasting in the aftermath of last year’s fires in the South Peninsula. The volunteers received just over R400 000 of the funds raised and used this donation to buy the fire skid units.

The new fire skid units are fully equipped trailers, each fitted with a 650F water tank.

The trailers also boast a twin-stage centrifugal pump, an aluminium locker for equipment, a 30m dragline hose with nozzle and 120m of canvas hose and a nozzle. The water tank and hoses can easily be transferred to a bakkie and, given that they are more com-

pact, the units can get into confined areas like informal settlements to fight fires more easily, explains JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security.

“I would like to thank the residents and corporate sponsors for their donation. The funds raised have been used to procure much-needed equipment which will enhance the firefighting efforts of our volunteers. This equipment can also be used in instances of flooding, to clear waterlogged areas,” he says.

“We have built a formidable volunteer base in the City of Cape Town over the years and we appreciate each and every gesture to help equip these men and women who dedicate their time and skills so selflessly in service of their fellow residents.”

hile travelling by train is still a transport priority for many across the Peninsula it is also a source of pleasure, offering trips to the seaside and other interesting places.

Social media have also seen the rise in people using railway property, disused train stations and tracks as backdrops for wedding and matric dance shoots, but is this legal?

There are many areas where communities live next to tracks and invade these areas.

Children break through fences and play next to tracks, raising concerns about their safety.

Madelein Williams, spokesperson of the Railway Safety Regulator, gives some insight into what you can and cannot do on railway property.

She explains that railway reserves are areas that are exclusively for train operations.

“There are serious consequences for people who illegally enter these reserves, because it is private property,” she says.

“As such, any person can be criminally charged for trespassing and the regulations empower operators to institute eviction proceedings against any unlawful occupiers of the railway reserve or a land adjacent to the railway reserve. The same applies to people using it for recreational purposes, like photo shoots or filming.

“It is the primary responsibility of the operator to protect its assets, and ensure that necessary legal action is taken against any trespassers.

“This responsibility of the operator is clearly reflected in the National Railway Safety Regulator Act. Section 5 of the Act places the primary responsibility of ensuring safe railway operations squarely on the shoulders of the operator.

“In our attempt to address challenges with railway reserves, we have developed two sets of regulations.

“The rail reserve regulations will oblige railway operators to erect fences, build walls and bridges and put up signs to prevent any encroachment on the railway reserve.”

In addition to these regulations on railway reserves, Williams says, the Railway Safety Regulator has developed regulations for railway security, which will require operators to develop, implement and maintain a plan to tackle all security matters and challenges.

“The regulation will require operators to deploy security personnel or electronic devices to monitor the perimeter of the railway reserve fence or wall in built-up areas.”

She also stresses the importance of passengers understanding railway safety.

“The most important safety aspect or challenge is the issue of people being struck by trains,” she says.

“Last year a total of 643 people were struck by trains. This is followed by electrocution and crime that takes place within the reserves, such as cable theft. The negative implications of such criminal activities to our economy are incalculable.”

The Regulator was established to oversee and promote safe railway operations through appropriate support, monitoring and enforcement.

Finding needles in the ash NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain Arsonists beware – a task team to investigate fires is hot on the heels of anyone starting fires in public areas.

The fire task team, a partnership between the City of Cape Town, police and Sanparks, was constituted by the provincial police commissioner in January.

According to a statement by the Table Mountain Safety Forum, the team is currently investigating four criminal cases.

“The task team was created in the wake of a series of fires between November and

January, some of which were alleged to have been set deliberately. A decision was made to investigate the fires and track down the culprits, if indeed the findings point to arson,” explains JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security.

The nine-member task team is made up of staff from the City’s special investigating unit and Fire and Rescue Service, Sanparks and the police.

The task team responds whenever there is reasonable suspicion, Smith explains.

“All evidence found would be handed over to the police.”

As part of an upgrade project the City of Cape Town has appointed a mosaic artist to work with local artists from Imizamo Yethu to create mosaic art on some walls in the area.

he City of Cape Town is forging ahead with the Hout Bay gateway precinct project and it is involving the community in the R5m upgrade.

They will upgrade the pedestrian environment along Hout Bay Main Road and Victoria or NR Mandela roads to provide the community with safer paved walkways to schools, taxis, the MyCiTi bus stations and the local clinic.

The upgrading of the intersection is part of a series of interventions in this area, such as the construction of the MyCiTi bus station and upgrading the sports complex.

Further improvements to the area include: paving walkways and larger public spaces, creating retaining walls to stabilise soil embankments, providing low seating walls, lighting and playground equipment and planting trees.

Johan van der Merwe, Mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, says their greatest motivation for this project was to create a quality public space for the community.

“The upgrade of the Imizamo Yethu entrance provided us with the ideal opportunity to do just that.

“The extension of the walkway along Hout Bay Main Road also plays an important role in linking pedestrians from Imizamo Yethu to their transport nodes for their daily commutes,” he says.

The City has appointed a mosaic artist to work with artists from Imizamo Yethu to create mosaic art on some of the walls that are being constructed as part of the project.

“Involving the artists from the local community in this creative expression element of the project has worked really well. We are happy to support artists with an opportunity to express their unique talents in an enduring quality public space that reflects the strength and potential of the community. It is our hope that this sort of project involvement will act as a source of pride for the community. ildlife and environment awareness are on a winning wicket with the activities of eco-schools in the Peninsula and Southern Cape taking off.

The achievements this year of almost 40 eco-schools of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) from Cape Town and the Southern Cape were celebrated at a special ceremony held at Observatory Junior School in Cape Town on Saturday.

Catherine Ritchie, spokesperson of Wessa, explained that the event was attended by teachers and learners from the participating schools, as well as by Wessa environmental education staff and partner organisations that have played a strong role in implementing the programme and supporting the schools over the past year.

“Eco-schools is a school-based environmental management, certification and sustainable development education programme of the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE),” she said.

“Implemented in almost 60 countries around the world and by Wessa in South Africa, eco-schools aims to improve environmental management and environmental learning at schools by assisting them to grow and develop their environmental capacity. “The programme supports the national curriculum (Caps) and also benefits the school in terms of whole-school development and improvement.”

The awards presented at the ceremony were in acknowledgment of the participating schools meeting all of the criteria for the eco-schools programme and for developing environmental action projects and learning programmes, which have improved their schools’ sustainability practices.

“Five of these schools received their international flags while two received their green flags. One of these schools received a

‘diamond decade’ bronze award indicating that they have been participating in the programme for 11 years.”

The programme for the event included presentations by Taryn van Neel of the CTEET, Skye McCool of the Cape Town education network Friends of Environmental Education and Rudi Lucas of Working on Fire.

After the presentation of the awards participants also had the opportunity to participate in four mini-workshops on the grounds of Observatory Junior School, which covered water testing, plant propagation, composting and worm farming.

Cat stuck with bullet in her TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

N

ahla the cat from Diep River that was allegedly shot by a neighbour in a complex’s communal garden will have to live with a pellet in her body.

Wayne Cleinwerck, Nahla’s owner, says a veterinarian told him that removing it would cause her more damage, so they chose to rather leave it in her as it’s not interfering with anything.

Nahla was allegedly shot by a neighbour, Antonie Gericke, with a high pressure air rifle on 29 January. He claimed he shot the cat as it was upsetting his birds in the garden.

Cleinwerck opened a case against Gericke and he is now facing charges of animal cruelty. He made his second court appearance at Wynberg Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday.

The case was postponed to 1 April to allow for further investigation.

Animal lovers came to court in their numbers, most of them dressed in black in solidarity to protest animal cruelty.

June Bradbury of the Cat Trapping Association says she wasn’t happy about the postponement.

“I don’t know whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing that the case was postponed again. All we want is justice for the cat.

“As it is [Nahla] is still struggling as the bullet is stuck in her body – anything can happen. Since this incident the cat has been very frustrated, traumatised and the injury is just making things worse. She now has to go around with a collar thing on the neck, which is very uncomfortable. All we want is for something to be done as animal cruelty is not acceptable,” she says.

After Nahla was shot she went missing for days before she was found in a school kitchen in Diep River (“Eight lives left for Nahla”, People’s Post, 16 February).

Cleinwerck says Nahla is at home and is recovering well.

“She went for the operation and everything went well. The vet decided to leave the pellet bullet in because removing it would cause more harm. She has been under a lot of stress, so she lost so much weight, but she

is recovering. She has been sick as well but we were told that it’s normal following the severe stress and trauma that she has been under so the immune system was down. She is limping a little and we are glad that now she is starting to bond again with the other cat that was at home. When she came back home it was a little awkward as they were staring at each other but now they are getting [closer] to each other.”

Station gets tower, antennas The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) wants to build a communication tower at its Wittebome train station in Wynberg.

Its application was sent for approval by the local subcouncil despite objections received through a public participation process.

Councillors decided to conduct a site visit before anything is concluded.

Prasa’s base telecommunications station will be an upgrade to the current signalling system used for controlling trains.

It will be a free-standing base station of about 25m high. The base station will comprise 12 antennae mounted on top of the pole, microwave dishes and four equipment containers. There will be a 2.4m palisade fencing enclosing it.

Prasa says with technology advancing and time passing, the current system is in need of upgrading to ensure that future expansion is catered for, but residents of the area aren’t so welcoming.

They allege the installation will be a health risk. They signed a petition – with 434 signatures – but it was not accepted as it did not comply with national regulations.

Most objections stated the exposure to radio frequency emissions from the station would be hazardous to the surrounding residents and the 30 children who attend a nursery school close by. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence of a health risk associated with telecommunication base stations. Objections further stated the 25m base would be an eyesore.

But the City says the premises are not fit for use.

More look into new library The Hangberg Library was officially opened last Thursday.

The library has been open to visitors since December last year after months of extensive renovations and maintenance of over R2.5m.

“The library has experienced a new level of usage and already there has been a definite increase in the number of users following its reopening in December,” says Belinda Walker, Mayco member for community services and special projects, who officially opened the library last week.

The library closed in February last year for the work, which involved moving the entrance to the main access road and installing a lift to improve access, particularly for people with disabilities and the elderly.

In addition, a glass roof gives visitors a sweeping view of the Hout Bay harbour area.

Crèche told to leave derelict site A

crèche owner and her 40 children are close to being kicked off City-owned land in Vrygrond.

Penny Way, who runs the Butterfly Way Educare, says she has received eviction letters – one after the other – and the latest one clearly stated that she had to be out of the building by 1 February.

Way says she is having sleepless nights and has no alternative place to go to. Over the past nine years, she says, she has been trying to do things by the book and to make sure that she legally leases the land.

Ian Neilson, Mayco member for finance, says due process has been followed and, therefore, it is vital that the court order be complied with.

“On 3 November 2015, the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court granted an eviction order for the illegal occupants of erf 82491 to vacate the City-owned property by 31 January 2016.

“The City is of the opinion that these buildings, which are illegally occupied, are not fit for occupation and there is no infra-

structure, such as running water amongst other things, which is a serious concern as it poses health and safety risks, particularly as children are involved.

“Legally, and for humanitarian purposes, premises in such dire conditions cannot be leased.”

Way says when she started the crèche she paid rent to the Vrygrond development trust, until she stopped four to five years ago as she didn’t get its help.

She has lost count of how many documents she submitted to the City of Cape Town. She has also tried to involve ward councillor Shaun August, but she has been told to wait. The frustrated crèche owner says she got a blow when August told her to move for a while and then come back when things settle.

“I said no to that. I had to put my foot down, because if I move out of here there will be nothing to come back to. The place will be vandalised.

“This is a paradise for my kids. They like it here. There is a lot of space for them to play and there is so much equipment – what are we going to do with it? All I want is just to get a piece of land to lease.”

‘Litter’ly killing us Take a stroll along most beaches in Cape Town and what do you see? Plastic bags, plastic bottles, broken glass and cigarette butts sitting in the beautiful sand that we love to run our toes through.

It is very rare to surf or swim in the water of Muizenberg without either touching a piece of plastic or, at least, seeing a piece of plastic floating in the water.

Interestingly enough, it is important to understand that most of the pollution we see doesn’t necessarily come from the direct littering of the beach. Studies have shown that about 80% of all pollution that enters the ocean originates from land.

The litter that is thrown onto land is either blown into the ocean in the wind or makes its way into the ocean via rivers or storm water drains.

Even though the ocean is extremely large, the effect of pollution is becoming more evident.

Fish and marine mammals are being harmed by the litter in the ocean. They can be strangled or suffocated by it.

What is even more alarming, is that the plastic items take decades to naturally biodegrade. So even if the fish that consume the plastic die, the plastic itself will live on.

This is when plastics can have an impact on human health. When humans consume these fish, not only can they get food poisoning or immune system problems but in extreme cases these toxins can cause cancer.

So what can be done to solve this problem? . Educate the public, starting with the youth, on the impact of plastic on the environment. . Encourage the recycling of plastic items in our own households. . Get communities and schools involved in beach clean-ups. . Place more rubbish bins along the coastline and have the waste collected regularly.

It is a common misconception that if you cannot see the problem, the problem is not affecting you.

Let’s stop the littering.

Passion for public work Complaints in the new South Africa have became a plague, especially in the state departments where all, whether they like it or not, are public servants.

These or rather all public servants have the sole mandate to serve Jan Alleman, no matter what status in society. I am also one of these that will complain if I see or am told that a public servant has failed Jan Alleman, but I am also conscious of the fact that praise is due where it is necessary.

I have noticed that Simon Daniels, a senior foreman at the Wynberg solid waste depot off Rosmead Avenue, is an example of service delivery.

He will take up a broom and sweep where dumpers have messed. I have seen him help people offload their waste and he is just all over the place, assisting where he can.

On Tuesday 1 March I was at the dump and at the gate was Daniels with the security checking the cars. Soon after that he was at the bins busy assisting the public and his staff. I commented that he was always so busy for a senior foreman and he responded that he was thankful to God for his job and he had a passion for his work. I could not help but to respond that one could see it.

As I drove away I thought to myself: if this man can only give a lecture onsite to other public servants on the passion for one’s work and the meaning of service delivery, we will have no complaints, only compliments.

Councillor must be Jack of all trades When it comes to helping people with little education, councillors must be on the forefront of solving their very challenging problems.

Recently a widow wanted to take title of her first husband’s rented municipal house after he died.

The trouble was that she had married again and changed her surname to her new husband’s surname. To complicate things she wanted the house transferred onto her original, maiden surname.

A call to the housing department, in my presence, revealed that her maiden and second surname were both invalid due to her new changed surname. The 60-year-old was in tears.

What was palpable was that she had problems with the new husband and was worried that should she transfer the house on her latest married surname, he may lay claim.

The difficulty was that she also did not trust her adult offspring as co-signatories.

Oddly, none of the information was blatant and needed to be drawn out of her with tactical questions as the lady remained peculiarly guarded.

What was required was to ensure that the house was transferred onto her name

only and that she also draft a will leaving the property to her offspring when she died as she did not trust them then.

This is an example of how councillors must sometimes work like social workers, lawyers and matrimonial and conflict mediators.

At the same time, a councillor cannot get upset at how some people behave when they insist on telling councillors how they want to do things. Some attitudes often defy logic, municipal procedure and law.

What is manifest is that there are many people in our multicultural democracy who are unable to help themselves.

Due to a genuine lack of education or money, they need help, possibly their entire life.

When voting in the upcoming election, consider if the prospective councillor is the type of person who has the required qualities, as well as the education and skills, to do this job.

While voting for a large party may seem like a logical option, at the end of the day when you need help, it is the councillor you must contact.

Throw those expensive blades away With profound disgust I am writing about prices of Gillette razor blades.

The greater majority of men shave every day, some every second day, because they have to be presentable to their wives or girlfriends, managers and employers, especially in the workplace.

Retail stores sell Gillette blades as follows.

1. A 4-pack costs R343.00 plus 14 % sales tax = R391. Divided by 4 = R97.75 per blade.

2. An 8-pack costs R588 plus 14% sales tax = R670. Divided by 8 = R83.75 per blade. It’s cheaper buying double.

Most men conservatively use two blades for R195 per month. Some with hard beards use up to three or four

blades per month (R251 for three, R335 for four).

It is nothing but robbing and plundering the male customer. I would persuade all the readers to grow beards. This will put a “twist” in Gillette and retail’s “proverbial cable”.

18 local teams in draw The draw for this year’s Metropolitan Premier Cup (MPC), otherwise known as the Bayhill Cup tournament, took place at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands last Wednesday.

The tournament is considered Africa’s premier youth soccer competition and is unofficially known as the “breeding ground of South Africa’s future soccer stars”.

This year’s tournament takes place at Erica Park in Belhar over Easter weekend from Wednesday 23 to Monday 28 March. The opening ceremony will be held on Friday 25 March.

The tournament draw saw 18 Cape sides, including two multiple former winners in Ajax Cape Town and Hellenic, joined by 14 top-notch teams from around SA and abroad.

Reigning champions Glendene United from Lansdowne will have their work cut out to defend their crown. The international guest teams this year are Swansea City from Wales and Zambia’s Zesco FC. The tournament is played in front of crowds of more than 25 000 spectators, which always include talent scouts.

The likes of Benni McCarthy, Matthew Booth, Nasief Morris, Moneeb Josephs, Thulani Serero and Rivaldo Coetzee gained crucial experience and exposure in the MPC. Last year’s player of the tournament, Mihlali Mayambela, was signed after the tournament by Djurgården, a club in Sweden.

Young soccer players will compete in the Metropolitan Premier Cup in Belhar over the Easter weekend in the annual competition well-known for talent scouting.

Llewellyn Allen, brand head of Metropolitan, describes the tournament as “a massive community event as well as a world-renowned youth soccer festival”.

PJ Williams, the tournament director, says demand for spots in the tournament, with R105 000 in prize money up for grabs, was extremely high and the local Cape clubs

who made it in draw deserved congratulations for getting through the tough qualification rounds.

Williams, who has been involved in the tournament since its inception in 1989, has no doubt that this year’s line-up is one of the best ever and that the finals will “deliver an exciting Easter weekend of action”.

Cyclists leave more than sweat W

hile around 4500 international cyclists descended on the city for the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour this past weekend, the tourism industry stands to gain a major boost.

“This represents a sizeable number of visitors, all of whom require accommodation, meals and transport, and, besides the race, they’re bound to take the opportunity to enjoy all of the attractions the Mother City has to offer,” says Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy.

The Cycle Tour contributed R450m to the city’s economy in 2014, the last time the full race took place, and it’s expected to generate at least the same this year.

“The contribution of the cycle tour towards the local economy is extensive and spreads out across the entire peninsula.

Events such as these create a buoyant economic environment and help to generate jobs in tourism and peripheral industries

and contribute to sustainability in businesses,” he says.

“The tour provides a fantastic opportunity for international exposure, and it takes place on some of the most scenic roads in the country. Cape Town Stadium – where the Cycle Tour has its start and finishing points – is right at the heart of tourism in the city. This is the world’s biggest timed cycle tour, and the sight of all of the cyclists taking part is an attraction on its own.”

A number of tour operators have embraced cycling culture and now offer cycling sightseeing tours, including in Langa and around the city centre, Duminy says.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour brings attention to the city, and this focus gives us an opportunity to showcase that the weather in Cape Town is suitable for cycling most days of the year, it’s a fantastic pastime that allows locals to get to know their own city as tourists on two wheels,” he says.

First Thursdays take newcomers to city Thousands of people pour into the city centre to experience its attractions after hours when they attend the monthly First Thursdays events.

And almost half of these monthly visitors come from the southern suburbs and South Peninsula.

“These people come into the CBD after hours to relax and enjoy themselves because they know they can explore their downtown on foot in a safe environment and will enjoy a first-class cultural and culinary experience,” says Rob Kane, chairperson of the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID).

First Thursdays is indeed designed to attract locals and visitors to the heart of the city, especially those who might not otherwise visit the Mother City’s downtown area, he says.

And according to the CCID, it’s important to understand who attends these events and why – in order to create a CBD that is an attractive destination every day of the year.

Kane says: “We need to understand how the programme is impacting people, businesses, galleries and restaurants. What began a few years ago primarily in the Church Street area now incorporates many other streets from Bree to Adderley and across to the East City area as well.”

In three years, First Thursdays has grown from six art galleries staying open a little later, to an event that attracts arts and culture lovers, shoppers and foodies to the CBD, Kane says.

In December, the CCID ran a dipstick survey of attendees on behalf of First Thursdays, polling nearly 180 people. The survey found half of the attendees were between 18 and 25 years old, a third were between 25 and 34 and 15% were 35 and older.

Apart from the visitors from the southern suburbs and South Peninsula, 22% of attendees live in the City Bowl, 17% live in the northern suburbs and 9% live on the Atlantic Seaboard. More than half drove to the event, a quarter walked and only 9% used public transport, Kane says.

“From an economic perspective, what we found most interesting is that more than two-thirds of respondents planned on eating at a restaurant or buying street food and close to half intended to shop at the retailers who stayed open late for the event. Some 40% were also first-time visitors to galleries in the CBD,” he says.

“This is an additional pool of several thousand customers these businesses might not ordinarily encounter and creates an opportunity for them to convert a one-off visitor to a regular customer.”

Guardians of mountain safety are happy The Table Mountain Safety Forum says it has had some success in helping to increase safety in the Table Mountain National Park recently.

Maitland Giants take major leap SEAN CAMPBELL

aitland Giants have won promotion to local baseball’s major league despite losing to Crusaders at the last hurdle.

After a name change two years ago (from Kenfac Phillies Baseball Club), promotion to the major league was a definite goal.

Leon Fester, Giants chairperson, credited the work ethic of the players and coaches and the vocal support from the community for home and away fixtures.

After losing out on promotion last season, the brains trust of the club and its coaches acquired the services of Matt Soren from the United States and non-active players Craig Prinsloo and Tariq George.

It was Soren’s contribution to the pitching department that provided the necessary support to Kurt Pretorius, Carlo Koks and Jayde Thorne that was the catalyst for most of the team’s victories.

Prinsloo and George took some time to settle down, but came to the party to ehlp with both the fielding and hitting departments. Prinsloo contributed in the outfield with Ge-

“Riders have the choice of riding under a university banner as student, alumni or supporter,” says Gary Vorster, CEO of Sport4U. Teams will be made up of two riders and they are able to register as a men’s, women’s or mixed team. Only the first rider in the team will be linked to a university; the second rider will automatically identify with the same university.

What makes the Varsity MTB Challenge different from other races is that it is the only official university MTB series in South Africa and is endorsed

by University Sport South Africa.

“By winning promotion we also brought baseball back into the spotlight in our community. Our senior players have become role models for many youth players,” says Fester.

Game preparation and strategy have been key in the Giants’ quest for promotion this season and the tireless effort of the coaching team of Honey Moses, Lloyd Koks and Don Gillies has not gone unnoticed.

Next season in the major league will be a totally different ball game with teams having more quality pitching and hitting. Teams are also more likely to expose mediocre baseball.

“Our club is ready for the challenge of major league baseball we have already started planning our pre-season time table,” Fester says.

‘By the Sea’ cup to be bigger JOSEPH PILLAY

T

he scene is set for an exciting three-day soccer festival which will take place in Strandfontein next weekend.

Organisers hope the tournament will change the face of the sport for budding youth by identifying potential stars and developing talent across the Peninsula.

The Strandfontein sports complex will play host to the 13th annual “By the Sea” tournament for u.13 soccer players from 19 to 21 March.

The event has been able to attract a wide variety of clubs in the past to develop players

by participating in the event and add to the carnival atmosphere which is normally associated with the tournament.

The official launch of the tournament will take place at the Strandfontein Civic Centre in Cruiser Road tomorrow at 19:00.

With major sponsors such as Coolag, the Strandfontein AFC has been able to not only host its annual tournament, but also improve on the quality for the young soccer players and their administrators.

With other sponsors like Umbro and Jive, the organisers believe that this year will be the best and most exciting tournament so far.

The tournament has a rich history of players from Strandfontein AFC who have gone on to the PSL, NFD and Motsepe League level. To name a few: Clint Fredericks (Ajax Motsepe team), Jody February (Ajax PSL goalkeeper) and Darren Smith (AmaZulu PSL team).

Vision According to Mario Wood, tournament secretary, the vision of the festival is to create a forum which places on centre stage the skills, talent and development of soccer players, creating opportunities for children and foraging relationships on and off the field.

The Strandfontein AFC u.13 side will be hoping that homeground advantage will help them excel at the 13th annual “By the Sea” tournament.

He adds he has been with the tournament for the last four years and has to acknowledge and express thanks to previous administration champions like Sharief Christians (junior chairperson), Gerard Kemp (club secretary and perennial tournament MC), Duane Maxwell (tournament security) and Hilary Williams (shop executive) for their unselfish support and dedication.

“These people are a major part of the reasons why this tournament is so attractive and successful, ” says Wood.

Thirty-two teams will compete in the tournament, divided into eight groups of four teams each.

The previous winners were Fish Hoek (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2014) and Old Mutual last year.

Teams The tournament is well-represented by various local teams, like Fish Hoek, Hellenic, Ajax Cape Town, Old Mutual, Meadowridge, Rygersdal and Wynberg St John of Cape Town Tygerberg, Fire-fighters of Khayelitsha, Zimasa Stars of Philippi, Stellenbosch University FC and Ulana Soccer Academy of Mandalay.

A host of excellent teams from Mitchell’s Plain, such as Beacon Spurs, Red Rovers, MPCE Football, Bayhill United, Fulham Sport, Standards United, Rockafellas, Bayview, Ikapa Sporting, Liverpool Portland and Leeds Lentegeur, will take part.

Making their appearances for the first time in the tournament will be All Stars, FN Rangers, Devonshire Rovers, Rebels, LifeZone Soccer International (LSL) and Origan Spurs.

Teams like Ulana Soccer Academy (whose chairperson is Simphiwe Ulana) concentrate on talented youngsters in the community, helping them with their schooling and a feeding scheme on training days and Saturdays.

Ulana, principal of the local school, is proudly ploughing back into the community that he came from, namely the Mandalay area, with boys coming from as far and wide as Khayelitsha and Philippi to be part of his vision in trying to build a better tomorrow by scouting future leaders through their soccer talents.

“We are proud and blessed to have Ulana Soccer Academy playing in this year’s version of the tournament by the sea,” says Keith Brink, tournament director.

It should be a fitting tribute to bring down the curtain on the season with two intriguing campaigns in the super league that has featured breathtaking performances by the competitors at times this season.

To begin with, the high-flying Glenthorn A’s are all set and are earnestly looking forward to clinching their fifth consecutive league crown.

The determined Glenthorn side of head coach Steven Rodkin tops the league table with 55 points after 20 matches – three more than second-place rivals Falcons with 52 points.

However, should mentor Andre Alexander’s Falcons side beat their rivals in the last game, they would take the crown away

from A’s, despite their potential points tally of 55 points being equalled.

With that in mind the battlelines are drawn and both teams enter the lion’s den full of confidence. They will back themselves against all odds seeing they have ample ammunition to pull off victory in Saturday’s final league decider and the knockout cup encounter on Sunday.

Glenthorn A’s played two matches over the weekend. While they whitewashed Normies 17-0, they were held to a 1-1 draw

by Westridge Yankees.

Falcons kept up their challenge to stay on course and within striking distance of their archrivals with 12-0 shut-out victory against Tantasport.

The nerve-wracking and nail-baiting match between Glenthorn A’s and Westridge Yankees yielded just two spilt runs in the game, coming in the bottom of the third inning for Glenthorn A’s which was an unearned run by Carly Mulder following a fielding error on third base by Nu-

raan Williams.

Westridge Yankees finally managed to safely cross the home plate with a well-executed, earned run in the top of the sixth frame through Roxanne Ohlsson off the bat of Jacky Adonis.

Lauren Mulder led the pitching duel for Glenthorn A’s and faced 25 batters in her seven-inning spell. She claimed three scalps, allowed one base-on-ball and gave up three single hits to Ohlsson (1-2), Williams and Adonis (each 1-3).

On the outside of the coin Westridge Yankees pitcher Megan Cable also showed her mettle in her seven-inning contest on the mound as the Glenthorn batters often found her tough as teak as Cable got seven fanned victims.

Cable faced 29 batters, allowed four baseon-balls and conceded only two hits which belonged to Astrid van Kresteren (2-3).
