T
he South African national darts championship is currently underway in Johannesburg until its conclusion on Friday. The first national championships were held in Cape Town in 1993, which served as the platform for Darts South Africa (DSA) to be formed through the unification of all the darting districts and associations in South Africa. The Western Cape is represented by four affiliated districts which form the federation: Cape Town, West Coast, Cape Winelands and Eden. Cape Town Darts is made up of nine associations, including twotime defending inter-district champion Peninsula Darts Association (PDA). The other associations are: Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Northern Suburbs, Ocean View, South Peninsula, Southern Suburbs, Stikland and the Western Province Darts Association. The DSA tournament format consists of an inter-regional and inter-district four-a-side competition in which players compete in both doubles and singles play. The inter-district competition has seven divisions. Peninsula will be leading the charge of the Cape Town teams in the inter-district competition, where they will be chasing an un-
precedented third title in a row. They are unbeaten for the past two years, having not lost a match at the national championship since 2013. The Western Cape women’s team took national honours in the interregional competition last year, while the men’s team finished as the runners-up in their division. Peter Bowers, manager of the PDA men’s team, is confident that the team is ready to defend its national title. Frank Avenant, Lesley Beukes, Jason Erasmus, Elroy Dirks, Jason Hendricks, Franklyn Miller, Sean Shaw and Ashwin Adams will be representing PDA at this year’s tournament. Avenant will also compete in the International World Darts tournament in Turkey in October and represent South Africa there. Warren Hansen, Cape Town Darts’s transformation official and PDA’s vice-chairperson, echoes Bowers’ optimism. “The only challenger to the throne is the Western Province Darts Association. “Western Province has four players in the Western Cape Darts Federation team as well.” Hansen also highlights top players in the Cape Town district who could make an impact in this year’s inter-district tournament: “Players who are performing very well and are on top of their game in the region are Wesley Daries and Marthinus Grobelaar. “These two gentlemen were the
