Congratulations, we made it Singer Emo Adams greets former editor of Die Burger Henry Jeffreys. Naspers and its flagship newspaper Die Burger celebrated their centenary this weekend with parties in the foreshore. The celebration also marked the official renaming of the Naspers Centre on Heeren gracht to the Media24 Centre, following a revamp of the company’s head office. Built in 1962, the building was the tallest in Africa at the time. At 26 storeys it is still a prominent feature of Cape Town’s skyline. The Naspers story is a truly South African success story – from the publication of the Afrikaans daily newspaper Die Burger to the largest media conglomer ate in the developing world, operating in 139 countries outside of the US and northern Europe. PINELANDS

Eyes will be on us soon

esidents of Pinelands are a step closer to a safer community as they are about to have cameras monitoring the area every day, all day. The first phase of the project to install CCTV cameras is being put to bed by midAugust. The project will have four phases. The cameras will only focus on public spaces so that residents can still depend on privacy in their homes.

Capturing images in public spaces to fight crime is now a widespread phenomenon. The project started last year and has been followed by People’s Post (“It’s time to seal the deal”, 10 July 2014). So far cameras are being tested in various spots in the area. The cameras will be installed at all the entrance and exit points so that the relevant authorities can monitor who comes in and goes out of the area. They will also be able to pick up on a person who is loitering. The cameras will also enable security

agencies to see any stolen car that enters their area. Riad Davids, vice-chairperson of the Pinelands Ratepayers’ Association, says they are excited that the hard work is finally bearing fruit. “We are over the moon that what we have been doing the past months will soon come to fruition. People were concerned about their safety and we are glad that this is a step closer in making our area safe. These cameras will be monitored 24 hours of the day to make sure that suspicious activities don’t go

unnoticed,” says Davids. He says that loadshedding will not pose a challenge. A decision has already been taken to install a backup system in the interests of keeping the system running at all times. Davids encourages residents to give their once-off contribution of R1480 each to complete the work. “We urge residents not to forget to make their contributions. We now need R400 000 for the next phase. We are so determined to see this completed and we are doing it through the help of residents,” he says.
