new disaster risk management (DRM) volunteer centre has been opened at the Athlone Civic Centre.

The City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate officially opened the centre last Saturday, as one of three opened on the day, .

The centres will add to the 10 other active DRM volunteer bases across the city.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, says funding was provided via the Urban Settle-

ments Development Grant.

“The facility cost R1m and comprises separate toilet/shower facilities for men and women (wheelchair-friendly), a fully kitted out kitchen, an open plan training and meeting area for 50 people and an office and store-room. There are ramps both in and out of the facility,” he says.

Ward councillor Rashid Adams was glad that another project in the ward has come to fruition.

Adams says the establishment of the DRM volunteer centre was initiated by a resident of the area who herself served as a volunteer, but

in an entirely different area.

Suzette Little, the then ward councillor, took it upon herself to approach the city to establish a centre in Athlone. Before the building of the centre, Little provided office space in the ward 49 council offices.

The new base will serve as a central meeting and deployment point for the various volunteer units across the city.

The volunteers receive first-aid training from Level 1 to Level 3 and beyond, provided there is funding, Smith adds.

In addition, they also receive

community-based risk assessment training.

“The vision is that this facility provides not only a base for the volunteers, but a facility that can be used during disaster-related incidents in the area, (for example). providing food, issuing of clothes or serving as a medical post,” says Smith.

The volunteer corps has nearly 500 active members who help in the City’s emergency services with humanitarian relief operations and fire fighting, among other things, such as delivering newborn babies, Adams explains.

I picked up my phone and got hold them. (The volunteers) responded and they were able to stabilise this guy until the ambulance came.

They worked effectively and we were totally amazed.

“A few weeks later, we also discovered that there was a woman giving birth along the road and the same (response) happened. The type of work that they do is phenomenal.”

hile residents across Cape Town make continuous pleas for traffic circles, speed humps, stop streets and traffic lights, the process of implementing these measures to slow down speedsters is often a slow one.

People’s Post spoke to Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport, to learn more about the process followed.

Herron says the deterioration of driver discipline has led to more calls from residents for the implementation of traffic-calming measures.

“For almost 20 years, local government in the Cape Town metropolitan area has seen the need for a traffic-calming policy to determine which requests for calming measures should be acceded to and which requests must be addressed through alternative measures.”

What is traffic calming?

Traffic calming is the practice of placing physical measures in a road to control the speeds at which drivers travel. Herron says the measures most often used are speed humps, raised pedestrian crossings, raised intersections and mini traffic circles.

“A change in the vertical or horizontal path of the vehicle regulates the maximum speed at which the vehicle can travel over the calming measure and hence along a length of road on which the calming meas-

ure is employed.”

He explains that road markings and road narrowing are sometimes used as a soft form of traffic calming in that they do not compel a driver to slow down but attempt rather to subconsciously influence the driver’s behaviour.

Transport for Cape Town (TCT), the City’s transport authority, receives about 500 requests on average for traffic calming each year.

This demand, Herron says, stems from a general worsening in drivers’ behaviour and those who purposefully break the rules of the road.

New policy In January, the City council approved a new policy on traffic calming. It has a key shift in focus to implement traffic-calming measures at schools and other public facilities where a high concentration of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, children and the elderly are typically encountered.

The purpose of the revised policy is to establish a sustainable and responsive guideline for installing traffic-calming measures across the city. The new policy also addresses the current backlog of 500 traffic-calming projects to the value of R30m.

Herron says these measures may be implemented along the roads next to and leading to schools and public facilities such as clinics, libraries, public halls, sports fields, swimming pools, parks, beaches, children’s homes, retirement

ty projects – to be allocated by subcouncils and councillors in consultation with their ward committees.

Under the new policy various conditions have been enforced since January.

These include: . TCT will now focus its limited resources on systematically addressing traffic-calming measures at schools across the city. . It will implement the (approximately) 500 already approved measures that have not yet been implemented due to a lack of budget. . Private funding of traffic-calming measures may be allowed at

public facilities with a high number of vulnerable road users, subject to compliance with relevant provisions of the policy. . For all other requests residents must engage with their local ward councillors and subcouncils, especially for roads with a proven history of crashes or a recent and very serious incident that demands immediate intervention. Should the subcouncil support the application, the subcouncil’s ward allocation funding may be used to investigate and implement traffic-calming measures deemed to meet relevant criteria.

He also says the huge backlog is as a result of funding constraints and limited human resources.

“Contrary to popular belief, traffic-calming measures are expensive and time-consuming to implement as it requires a lengthy process involving detailed designs, traffic-impact assessments, reports from road engineers and public participation processes.”

In the current financial year from June 2016 to 2017, TCT plans to implement traffic-calming measures at 65 schools and 84 backlog sites.

Herron says if a request is for traffic-calming measures along a road with a proven history of road accidents, residents will have to engage with their local ward councillors and subcouncils.

The new policy also makes provision for private parties to fund traffic-calming measures at public facilities themselves. For this type of request, send an email to transport.info@capetown.gov.za.

Cops crack down on gangs N

ot long after his appointment as the new station commander of Manenberg Police Station, Brigadier Enolium Joseph has sent a strong statement to gangs in the area.

“Gangs as an entity might not be illegal in their existence, but being part of a criminal gang whilst conducting their activities is definitely illegal in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca).

This is unconstitutional and violates the community in more ways than one. Gangs infringed on the community’s constitutional right to safety and security for decades,” states Joseph.

He adds gangs have traumatised and crippled communities in a way that led to communities becoming co-dependent on violence and substance abuse. Joseph is saddened that this is a norm in povertystricken communities.

He hopes Poca has helped South Africa to steer its approach to gangs in a new direction.

“This [law] is a new dimension in dealing with gangs and their activities, changing the perception of the community that nothing can be done to gang bosses and their henchmen. The action of gangs is unconstitutional. Their actions which infringe on others rights, children not being able to play in open spaces and recreational are-

as, [who] cannot move around freely without fear of being intimidated or harmed through gang shootings,” says Joseph.

He says the youth have little choice but to join these gangs. They are tied to a gang by the mere fact of growing up in an area.

He adds that the residents of Manenberg have become complacent to gun fire, the frequency of illegal gang activity in the area and widespread substance abuse, which, he says, is an integral source of income for gangs. This leads to a decay in the moral fibre in the community in which children are neglected and violated and senior citizens are left traumatised.

“The gangs have violated community members through using a violent approach and subtle intimidation to gain communities’ protection. This is the violation of our constitutional rights and will not be tolerated under my watch as station commander,” Joseph says.

He says a clear message will be sent to gangs and gang leaders. The police will not hesitate to arrest any gang member and their leadership for any shooting that jeopardises the community’s safety.

“The suffering of communities at the hands of individuals who associate themselves with gangs must stop now. One shot is a shot too many.”

The initial site requested by Little was in Nantes Park.

However, once funds were allocated for the erection of the structure at the end of last year, it was decided that Athlone Civic Centre would the best location.

Adams says he would like to see the volunteer group in the area grow and become less restricted in carrying out their duties.

“We found out that there are times when they are restrained and that they cannot actually go out and attend to a patient because there is red tape involved which does not allow them to do what they want to do.

“The neighbourhood watch does not have the expertise to deal with it, so they call the police. By that time something else could have happened.

“If [the neighbourhood watch members] know disaster risk is on duty, they can call them and ask them to assist until an ambulance comes.

“I have also asked them to invite me to come along when they do operations, because I would like to get involved and see for myself what they actually do,” Adams says.

“[The volunteers] play a meaningful role when organisations have public events in the area.

They are always called upon and are always on standby to attend to the medical eventualities which could take place. They play such a good role and they need to see the group being taken out. I just want to see them grow,” Adams says.

He says he would also like to see the DRM volunteers team up with the various neighbourhood watch groups in the area.

Local learners in safest hands M

ore than 450 school drivers and road safety stakeholders packed the Athlone Civic Centre on Thursday 3 November to celebrate the achievements of the Childsafe SA Safe Travel to School Programme.

The biggest excitement of the day was when Manenberg school driver William Lottering was handed the keys to a brand new Nissan Impendulo, a 16-seater minibus.

The car, worth R395 000, is his prize for being the safest transporter of school children in the country.

When he heard his named called out, Lottering stood up and held his hands on his head with a look of disbelief on his face.

“It took a while to sink in that I was the winner. I’m thankful to God for what he has done in my life. I love these children and they love me. It’s my birthday tomorrow and this is the best birthday present,” an elated Lottering said.

Lottering drives children into Athlone along Jakes Gerwel Drive and Klipfontein Road – notoriously high-risk traffic routes.

He has proved to be a consistently safe driver and was a runner-up in the competition last year.

The event acknowledged the safest drivers of this year with cash and petrol voucher prizes.

The Safe Travel to School Programme, a Discovery and Childsafe SA initiative, was launched in January 2014 with 20 school drivers on the road – driving children from the Cape Flats townships to schools in Athlone, the CBD and the northern suburbs.

William Lottering was handed the keys to a new Nissan Impendulo on Thursday 3 November.

He was announced the winner in the Childsafe SA Safe Travel to School Programme.

Since then the programme has expanded into areas all over the city and has 385 school drivers. That’s 385 drivers dedicating themselves to be the safest drivers they can be, the organisers say.

These drivers operate all over the city, in-

cluding Atlantis, Milnerton, Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha, Blue Downs and the northern and southern suburbs.

Thousands of children are transported to schools in Cape Town every day – from early in the morning, across long distances and

along dangerous traffic routes. The vehicles they are transported in are often not roadworthy and are too often driven by drivers who drive recklessly.

The programme aims to make the journey to and from school safer by focusing on the driver.

Discovery Insure founder and executive director Themba Baloyi says child safety is a priority.

“The leading cause of childhood deaths in South Africa is road crashes, which means that a lot of work has to be done to make sure this doesn’t continue. No child should ever get injured or die while making his way to and from school. It is unacceptable and we should make every effort to prevent this from happening,” Baloyi says.

She adds an aim of this programme is to “make our roads safer for children”.

“In partnership with ChildSafe, we are helping the drivers to know and change behaviours.”

Through interventions the programme is developing reliable and confident school drivers.

This is done by recruiting drivers onto the programme after checking their taxis and buses for roadworthiness, installing a tracking device in their vehicles and monitoring their driving 24/7, providing incentives for safer driving.

Further measures include testing drivers’ eyesight and providing spectacles if necessary and training them in first aid and defensive driving.

Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman says four armed men stormed the Clicks store at about 18:50, just before closing time.

Two of the robbers ordered the cashiers to empty their registers into black bags while the other two ordered the manager to open the safe in a back office and removed R60 000 worth of coins. “The manager told them she did not have access to the drop safe where the notes were kept. They then ushered the employees into the back room and left the scene,” Norman says.

No shots were fired and no-one was injured, Norman confirms. The suspects fled in a car in the direction of Langa.

A case of business robbery is being investigated. No arrests have been made.

Social media posts have residents and visitors to the shopping centre concerned for their safety as the robbery came less than a month after the MTN store in the same centre was robbed on Tuesday 25 October.

Vangate Mall management says customers can be assured their safety remains the highest priority. “(We) will continue to ensure that all security measures are in place.

Security procedures are constantly being evaluated and tenants and staff are being educated accordingly. Mall management and security personnel are working closely with police to ramp up security during the festive season,” mall management says.

They also confirm police will provide additional manpower during this period while working closely with a local neighbourhood watch group.

Private security will also be increased over the period while the mall’s high tech CCTV surveillance equipment will continue to play a vital role towards enhancing safety and security.

Man stabbed during attack Manenberg police arrested a 30-year-old woman on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a man in Manenberg.

According to Captain Ian Bennett, Manenberg police spokesperson, officers were called to Wye Road at 15:00 where the 47year-old victim was found stabbed to death in his wendy house.

“It is alleged that an argument broke out between the two and that the 47-year-old man attacked the 30-year-old woman,” says Bennett.

Bennett adds that during the attack, the woman suffered several defensive stab wounds.

“She somehow managed to get the knife

from the deceased and then she stabbed him. He was fatally wounded and died on the scene,” adds Bennett.

The woman apparently fled the scene. She was taken to hospital with serious stab wounds.

“Detectives investigating the case established enough evidence and witness statements which pointed to her as the person delivering the fatal stab wound.

“The 30-year-old woman was arrested as she was released from hospital and is now in custody,” says Bennett.

Sea escape for special seniors In appreciation for senior citizens making a differ­ ence in their communities, the South African Society of Hope (Sash) and Sanparks treated a few finalists of the People’s Post Spec Savers Commu­ nity Champions Elders Awards and their chosen guests to an outing to Cape Point last Tuesday.

anaging over 5000 volunteers is no easy task, but it’s well worth it when they’re all working to put smiles on children’s faces.

Operation Smile, a non-profit organisation, works to fund surgery for children born with cleft palates.

Operation Smile boasts over 5000 medical and non-medical volunteers in and around South Africa.

It falls to programme coordinator Adva Brivik to organise all these volunteers. She creates opportunities for students to volunteer, facilitates opportunities to develop young leaders, creates support initiatives to raise awareness against bullying and provides platforms to advocate for safe surgery.

Adva herself began as an intern with the organisation after she learnt about Operation Smile at a gala dinner.

“I was blown away by the work they did and how passionate each and every volunteer felt. I started in September 2013 as an intern. By the following year I became permanent. Needless to say, it has been a rewarding and humbling journey ever since.”

Although medical volunteers work in their speciality, there are a range of opportunities for nonmedical volunteers, including the fields of patient imaging technology, translations and electronic and paper medical records. “Operation Smile also sends a student team.

The student team will assist with the patients by adding the very important emotional infrastructure to the medical mission. They are also tasked with teaching basic health care,” Adva says.

wonderful and well-rounded exposure to both the healthcare systems and to patients as well as everything in between. We enjoy nurturing individuals and their ideas to get involved, from cake sales to Epic cyclist participants. Although Adva’s average day is filled with challenges such as marrying the right event with the right volunteers and inspiring volunteers to further their cause, there are many moments that make it worth it. “My highlights vary from the reaction of a young adult who surpasses his own expectations to the smile of a patient’s guardian when he sees his child for the first time,” she says.

Longkloof Circle shooters arrested EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

anenberg police have taken two men into custody on Sunday in connection with the attempted murder of eight family members in Longkloof Circle in Heideveld.

The suspects are the aged 18 and 19, while a 30-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition as well as drugs.

The shooting took place on Friday night.

It is alleged the family was at home in their lounge, while their children played outside, when the shooting occurred.

Manenberg police spokesperson Ian Bennett says four men got out of a white car parked outside the house, walked onto the premises and forced open the front door.

“Without any warning the perpetrators opened fire randomly at the unsuspecting people in the lounge. As they fled the scene [the gunmen] continued to shoot.

“They fled the scene in a white car, leaving eight people injured including two children, both boys aged six and 10. The injured were taken to Heideveld Emergency Centre for medical treatment,” says Bennett.

Bennett says their serious and violent crime project team took up the investigation, working tirelessly.

He adds that while police tried to carry out the investigation in Heideveld, community members attacked them by stoning the police vans.

“This action will not be tolerated and it will not deter the police from delivering a quality service to the community,” says Bennett.

The investigation then took police to Strand after the officers received information regarding the location of the suspect.

They arrived at his home and found the suspect, an 18-year-old man, who was named in the shooting.

He was arrested and brought back to Manenberg.

“On searching the premises [officers] found two firearms. One firearm was stolen in a Hout Bay case, the other has not been reported stolen yet. It is registered to someone in Kimberley. Seventeen half mandrax tablets and 16 units of tik were also confiscated,” says Bennett.

A 30-year-old man, the owner of the home, was arrested for the possession of the unlicensed firearms and drugs.

“The team also arrested the another 19year-old man who was mentioned in the attempted murder of the eight victims in Longkloof Circle. The officers were commended for their dedication in bringing these perpetrators to book,” concludes Bennett.

A case of attempted has been opened for investigation and police are still seeking more information relating to the incident.

Two shot dead in Usk Road Two men have been shot dead in Usk Road in Manenberg on Sunday.

According to Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett, police were called to a shooting incident at Lillian Court at 15:30.

The two victims were aged 33 and 16.

It is alleged that the two victims were sitting with friends in the courtyard when a group of men approached them, Bennett explains. One of the appraoching men pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at random into the group of men sitting in the courtyard.

The shooter fled the scene on foot, Bennett says. Eight spent cartridges were found on the scene and will be sent for

ballistic testing.

When police arrived at the scene, the body of the 33-year-old man was seen lying in the courtyard. He was shot in his head and lower abdomen. The 16-yearold victim, who was in the courtyard at the time of the shooting, was rushed to Heideveld Emergency Centre where he succumbed to his injuries. He was shot five times in his upper body.

“It is not clear why the shooting happened. A case of murder has been opened for investigation. No arrest has been made,” says Bennett.

Manenberg shooting incidents flare up There has been a flare up in the number of shooting incidents in Manenberg over the weekend.

Two men, aged 17 and 24, were arrested

by Metro Police for the illegal possession of a firearm yesterday.

According to Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett, the area has been saturated with additional forces, which include Metro Police, due to ongoing gang violence.

“This is to increase policing visibility and ensure the safety of the community through crime prevention strategies such as stop and searches,” says Bennett.

He says Metro Police officers who were on patrol turned into Red River Road just as two men started to shoot.

The suspects then ran straight into the Metro Police’s K9 Unit while they were firing shots in the opposite direction.

The suspects were cornered as they tried to throw the firearm away. They were arrested and had a 9mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition confiscated.

In another shooting incident on Sunday, police arrested three men for the possession of a firearm.

During patrols, police followed up information received of a suspicious person in Cam Street. They found a firearm outside the room window where the three men were found. All of them were brought into custody for questioning while the firearm was sent for ballistic testing.

Later on Sunday, police patrolling Storms River Road heard gunshots and located a group of men on the street corner.

The group tried to flee on foot as the police approached them, dropping a pistol in the process.

It was found that the 9mm pistol had its serial number filed off and was subsequently sent for ballistic testing.

“Any information leading to the successful confiscation of firearm or ammunition will be financially rewarded,” says Bennett.

New wards in subcouncils EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

T

he first sittings of subcouncils 11 and 17 took place in their respective chambers last Tuesday.

Following the local government elections, new subcouncils were established. The City of Cape Town council still comprises 24 subcouncils, but certain wards moved across subcouncils.

In some cases, a new subcouncil chairperson was elected.

Subcouncil 11 comprises wards 40, 44, 46 and 47, represented by Bongani Ngcombolo, Anthony Moses, Mogamat Aslam Cassiem and Antonio van der Rheede respectively.

The shuffle means that Cassiem’s ward 46 and Van der Rheede’s ward 47 move from subcouncil 17. Wards 42 and 45 move to subcouncil 14. Rashid Adams’s ward 49 moves to subcouncil 17.

Van der Rheede was elected as subcouncil 11’s new chairperson, taking over from Mzuvukile Nikelo.

Anthea Leitch, Lazola Gungxe, Lisa McBride, Moegamat Achmat and Mzwakhe Nqavashe are on the subcouncil as proportional representatives.

Subcouncil 17 now comprises wards 48, 49 and 60, led by Magedien Davids, Adams and Mark Kleinschmidt respectively.

George March was retained as the subcouncil’s chairperson.

The two subcouncils share Kayise Nombakuse as their subcouncil manager.

March, Anwar Adams, Ganief Hendricks, Garin Cavanagh and Yagyah Adams make up the proportional representation of subcouncil 17.

Surf and sea celebrations The Wavescape Festival is celebrating its 13th year with a bumper line-up of beach culture, surfing and conservation-related activities.

The art board project is already on at Tiger’s Milk Muizenberg where surfboards which have been turned into artworks will be on display until next week Tuesday when the boards will be up for auction at a charity event featuring comedian Nik Rabinowitz.

Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the NSRI, Shark Spotters and Waves for Change.

Wavescape will be officially launched this weekend with a “fish fry” at Jack Black Brewery in Diep River on Saturday from 19:00. The evening will include a celebrity braai competition to raise awareness about sustainable seafood, an exhibition of surfing and ocean photos and live music by DJs Cath and Dune Tilley, along with activities to keep children entertained.

In the film festival, 26 ocean and surfing films will be screened. Feature, short and medium-length films will be screened at Jack Black Brewery, the Labia and Clifton fourth beach from Saturday 3 to Sunday 11 December.

The Save Our Seas Foundation will present an evening of 10-minute talks by ten thought leaders connected to the ocean, including artists, athletes and activists at the Centre for the Book on Tuesday 6 December.

They’ll also be hosting Beach Reach, a fun, interactive day at Muizenberg beach where children on Saturday 10 December from 10:00 to 13:00.

Of Bros and their Mos

Oh how I wish it was 1 December already.

The day normality returns. The day I can look in the mirror and see myself again.

The day the itching and irritation will stop.

The day that the Mo will go.

On 1 November every year many men around the world start caring for their new baby – a baby called The Abracadabra, The Rock Star, The Regent, The Trucker, The Wisp, The Connoisseur, The After Eight, The Box Car or The Undercover Brother.

We will take care of our Box Car or Trucker. We will trim it and keep it tidy and think that we look good (but deep down we now that we are no Tom Selleck or Burt Reynolds). We take the itching and irritation, the teasing by friends and the month of almost no kisses from the wives or girlfriends, because we do it for our brothers. Brothers we may not know and may not ever meet – brothers who suffer from cancer.

Movember is an international movement committed to changing the face of men’s health. The way most men support this is to grow a Mo during November, but for many of us it is not easy.

It is not easy because all facial hair is not created equal. For some Mo Bros it takes only a few days to get The Rock Star or The Regent. For others it will take a few weeks to even see a semblance of a Mo. But we all do it and we each have a reason.

For me it is a way to commemorate my late father who died of cancer many years ago when I was a student. My constant itching and irritation does not compare in the least to the pain and suffering he had to endure, but for those 30 days of Movember it is my way of saying: I miss you, Dad. So whether the Mo Bro next to you is sporting The Connoisseur or The Wisp or even just a few upper-lip hairs standing up straight and out of line, remember that he is doing it for The Cause.

To the Mo Bros who, like me, can’t stand the itching and irritation any more: there is only one week left to 1 December.

And then the Mo can go.

Safety begins at school In response to the article “Give schools safety training” (People’s Post, 5 November).

With the political instability in the country presently, it is of the utmost importance that teachers as well as learners are trained and informed about how to handle a emergency situation at school, and first aid should also be included in the program.

Swimming classes is another subject that comes to mind, both at private and muncipal swimming pools, as well as the sea.

If at school level learners are properly informed and trained to handle situations such as fires, drownings, and injuries due to criminal activities, the less lives will be lost.

The youth need to be instructed and trained.

What if a fire should break out at a school? Do the teachers even have an idea of how to handle these situations?

How do they know if all learners are brought to safety and accounted for?

Are there fire hoses and extingushers available on school property? Do they know how to use them?

How secure is your school? Are there security officers at the entrance and exit points? Do they do spot checks on people, learners and vehicles entering in on the premises?

Do learners report the presence of strangers on the school property?

Is the school grounds fenced off, preventing unwanted persons entering the school for all the wrong purposes?

We are living in a very difficult time period in South Africa, and our children need to know how to prevent and combat these situations, should the arise at anytime.

Team up for change After the hype of the local elections, it is back to the reality of the challenges the community face. Well done to the newly appointed councillors, chairs and subcouncil members.

I have however noticed the absence of [most] of the candidates who have so vigorously campaigned to better our communities.

In my ward we had 17 candidates [parties], myself included, on the ballot paper.

What has become of the smiling faces on the posters, the promises and commitments of wanting to contribute towards a better community, the “irrespective the outcome” speeches and “I have a dream slogans”?

Were they all just empty and meaningless words? Were they the words of an opportunist?

If the 17 candidates with all their ability and expertise could partner and as a team tackle the social and other challenges collectively, we would surely form a formidable team with an awesome outcome.

The community would be affected and influenced so positively over the next few years that the course of history would be

forever altered.

So I challenge all the candidates who genuinely want to build our community, to come to the table and give your input.

Let the community see what you are all about, demonstate what you stand and stood for, become relevant, promote your course and express your views.

Don’t wait till 2019 again!

The councillor in the seat is not our enemy, but a servant of the community and our commander.

Let’s support him/her in our common course.

Next time the posters go up again, your smile can be even bigger on the poster; you can champaign with freedom and conviction; you won’t be a stranger, but a friend of society and a credible candidate worthy of consideration.

I challenge you all – especially those who have vanished from the scene – to roll up your sleeves and become a labourer in the great task of making our community a better place for all.

If you don’t, well, your silent absence speaks volumes and attests to the facts you are the author of.

Find solutions to water crisis Why is the city council so useless when it comes to water provision?

Newlands has the highest rainfall table in the city, if not the country.

Why doesn’t the council dredge the river from Newlands to where it runs into the sea?

Dredge it deeper and wider and build a

dam wall at the end of the Black River, then operate a river police to police the entire stretch so no one pollutes the river.

There could also be braai areas along the river beds and water can be purified to feed the city.

This can also be done in Table View which runs into the Milnerton lagoon.

Help take care of penguins The first abandoned African penguin chicks have been admitted to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) after being rescued by CapeNature from the Stony Point colony in Betty’s Bay. Currently, 151 chicks are in Sanccob’s care, with many being admitted as young as five days old after being abandoned by their parents.

The mass abandonment of penguin chicks in the colonies is an annual occurrence between October and January, when adults go into moult to replace their worn-out feathers with new, waterproof feathers. Before moulting, penguins will build up their fat reserves to prepare for the three to four week feather-change process when they are confined to land and unable to enter the ocean to hunt for fish. As a result, moulting parents are unable to care for their young, who are then classified as abandoned.

These chicks face starvation unless conservation organisations like Sanccob and its partners intervene.

Chicks are rescued by the colony managers and admitted in large groups to Sanccob’s centres in Cape Town.

The rehabilitation of a penguin chick can take anything from six weeks to three months, depending on their size and condition, explains Nicky Stander, Sanccob’s rehabilitation manager.

“The chicks admitted this year are considerably younger than chicks admitted in previous years. Most of the chicks are between five days and two weeks old. This means that their rehabilitation period will be much more extensive and the costs

Once they are at a fledging age, of the correct weight, healthy and their feathers are waterproof, they will be released back into an established colony like Boulders Beach, Robben Island, Stony Point, Bird and St Croix islands.

Due to the rapid decline in population numbers, the African penguin was reclassified as endangered in 2010. Today it is estimated that less than 2% (25 000 breeding pairs) of the species remain in the wild. The survival of individual penguins is critical if South Africa is to retain the wild population. Sanccob and its partners have successfully hand-reared and released more than 4000 chicks since 2006.

Ongoing monitoring and research have proved that their survival rate is comparable to that of naturally reared birds and

this is one of the most important interventions to conserve the dwindling African penguin population. However, the project needs money for fish, medicine, veterinary supplies, electricity for the incubators, staff training and equipment.

Sanccob encourages the public to “help” rescue and rehabilitate abandoned chicks by adopting and naming a penguin chick from Sanccob. Adoption costs are R600 to R700 and each pack includes a certificate of adoption, a photograph of their chick and a thank you letter on behalf of their adopted chick. The campaign runs from November to December and during this time, the Blue Fund will match any contributions made by the public to the campaign.

These are the words of Strandfontein jazz singer Austin-Lee Jacobs who will be performing at this year’s Nederburg Picnic Pops.

The annual sunset concert, which takes place on Saturday, gives local rising stars the opportunity to share the stage with big names and the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

Austin-Lee will sing alongside Afrikaans singer, Refentse Morake, who took South African music fans by storm after a video of him performing in his own driveway went viral and landed him a recording contract.

Do a short check before a long trip Before you take to the road for your holiday, remember that a long road trip is a serious test for any car, so it’s important to check that all is working as it should be – even if the car has recently been serviced.

It’s the time of year for tummy bugs

D

uring the last financial year, more than 50 000 children under the age of five were treated at health facilities for gastro without dehydration.

Almost 7000 children needed to be admitted to hospital and 12 children died.

Gastroenteritis, commonly referred to as gastro, is a highly infectious virus that thrives in hot weather. The virus is spread by flies and preys on babies and children.

November to the end of May is referred to as the paediatric surge season when cases of diarrhoea are much more common.

Health facilities, both private and public, see an increase in patients suffering from gastro. Dehydration due to gastro remains

one of the main causes of illness and death in children under the age of five.

Children who are malnourished, have not been immunised and have other illnesses are far more likely to contract gastro and develop fatal complications.

During the last surge season, 854 new cases of severe acute malnutrition were identified, of which 718 were admitted to hospital.

Five of these children died due to malnutrition.

Maintaining a hygienic home and environment is integral in ensuring that your family is gastro-free this season.

The easiest way to do this is to ensure that you and all who visit your home wash their

hands on entering the house and always after going to the bathroom. Because flies spread illness, it is important that objects outside which attract flies are properly disposed of.

Dustbins must be closed, animal droppings collected and thrown away and food scrapings, used nappies and sanitary towels put into a plastic bag, knotted securely and thrown into a dustbin.

Stagnant puddles of washing water or dripping taps also collect germs, so make sure that waste water is thrown into a drain or used to clean and flush toilets.

However, even with the best care and hygiene, many will get gastro. Some will only

have diarrhoea, others will have diarrhoea and vomiting.

Before leaving the home to visit your clinic, prepare this oral-rehydration solution: Using a clean 1F bottle, mix 1F of water with ½ a teaspoon of salt and eight teaspoons of sugar. Mix these ingredients well.

This solution is suitable for all ages and should be taken in little sips at a time to replenish lost body fluids.

Take the solution with you should you need to take your child to the clinic, so that your child does not dehydrate on the way.

All children younger than two years old must be seen by a health professional should they develop diarrhoea and vomiting.

t the end of this weekend’s doubleheaders, Bellville, Westridge and VOB came out as winners, with Athlone, Maitland and Crusaders coming out losers, and Bothasig and Durbanville ending with mixed fortunes.

Bellville in mean mood League leader Bellville dispatched with defending champion Bothasig 13-3 on Saturday. The team demolished Maitland 15-0 in five innings on Sunday.

Poor defence by Athlone A’s In Durbanville on Saturday, the home team took full advantage of Athlone’s poor defence and base running to run out as 9-3 winner.

Durbanville coach Darren Smith took the pitching responsibility on himself and pitched 3.2 innings, restricting Athlone to two runs from six hits before replacing himself with Damien Perkins.

Perkins did just as well in his 5.2 innings, giving up two runs from five hits and four walks.

Athlone started with Dean Jacobs who had a sluggish start pitching three innings and gave up six runs from six hits. He was replaced by Lloyd Stevens who threw five innings, conceding a further three runs from five hits.

The best batters for Athlone A’s were Darren Wedel (2/3), Mathew Diedericks (2/4), Faizel Moosa (2/5) and Aiden O’Connor (2/5).

Smith (3/4), Perkins (2/5) and Kevin Townsend (2/5) did well for Durbanville.

Seven errors, three runners thrown out on bases and 11 runners left on base did not help Athlone’s efforts.

Athlone also lost 13-9 to Bothasig. Durbanville lost 13-6 to VOB on Sunday.

Jared Williams started very well for Crusaders, allowing six runs from seven hits and four walks to

keep the ball game tight in the 5.1 innings he pitched. He was replaced by Brent Fransman, who was less effective in his 2.2 innings, conceding two runs from two hits, two walks and two fielding errors.

The lack of pitching depth hurt Crusaders who used Beukes in the last innings where he conceded six runs. Before this season Beukes had not done much pitching so his

work is not as refined as his other pitching colleagues.

None of the Crusaders hitters were comfortable against VOB’s Dutch pitcher Tim Uitvligt in his five innings or Grant Robertson in his four innings. Uitvligt conceded two runs from four hints, a walk, two hit-by-pitch while striking out two batters. Robertson conceded four runs from five hits and struck

Yankees slay Giants Maitland Giants’ first visit to Mitchell’s Plain is one they will want to forget, as they were beaten 14-0 by an organised and determined Westridge Yankees.

Canadian Jas Shergill was never comfortable on the mound as the Yankees scored two runs in the first, seven in the third and three in the fifth inning to race to a 12-0 lead by the top of the sixth inning.

He was replaced by Jamie Busch, who conceded two runs in the sixth inning. Besides the aggressive Yankee bats, Shergill was unsettled by the south-easter wind.

Vein Rix (3/3), Chad Eastern (2/3) and Luwayne du Plessis (3/5) were the main contributors with the bat for Yankees. Jared du Plessis also hit two runs, which included a two-down homerun in the first inning.

Yankees scored seven runs from six hits and three errors in the third inning.

None of the Giants hitters were comfortable against Yankees pitcher Jayson Ripepi. Ripepi injured his left hand in last week’s game but still managed to pitch 6.2 innings. Gwynn Petersen was the designated hitter for Ripepi due to the hand injury.

Standings After nine games, Bellville is at the top of the log with 18 points, followed by Westridge with 14.

Athlone and Bothasig have 10 points each.

VOB occupies fifth place with 8 points, followed by Maitland and Durbanville with 6 points each.

Crusaders have no points.

Wind can’t blow away the smiles RASHIED ISAACS

T

he Mitchell’s Plain Titans Athletic Club has a reason to smile after a successful road race on Saturday morning.

The league race, now in his ninth year, has become a favourite with running clubs as the distances of 5km, 10km and 21km cater for serious and runners.

The race started and finished at the Rocklands Sports Complex.

Participants who finished the race all received medals.

Support for organising club Titans was boosted when Proteas cricketer JP Duminy and his project team, JP21, came on board to promote the race.

The gale force south-easterly wind did not blow away spirits on the day as the race took the runners through the suburb of Rocklands, its surrounds as well the beachfront.

The route is generally flat, which lends itself to good times for most of the runners.

Phillies, Tantasport deliver thriller NOORE NACERODIEN

oftball teams Kenfac Phillies and Tantasport delivered the most entertaining match of the local softball season so far when they locked horns at the home of Cape Town softball, Turfhall, on Saturday.

The softball fraternity could not have written a better script for this game as the two teams produced a game of the highest quality.

Phillies blasted four runs in the last inning after Tantasport maintained the lead throughout the game, to eventually run out 11-8 winners.

The match was highlighted by the superb batting of Carly Mulder (4-4) and Faith Beukes (3-4) of Phillies.

Nawaal Nacerodien (2-4) and Kathryn van Boom (2-4) led the way for Tantasport. It was on the pitching rubber that Ester van Heerden kept her nerve for Phillies, facing 36 batters and giving up eight hits.

Tantasport changed its pitcher four times to collectively give up 14 hits.

Both clubs came into the game in need of a win, after struggling to maintain a winning run of form this season.
