T

he search continues for the six-year-old girl who went missing from her home on Sunday last week.

The residents of Hanover Park have been on a frantic search since then when SashaLee November, the youngest of five children, went missing while playing in front of her parents’ home in Groenal Walk.

Search efforts continued all week to find the girl affectionately known as Meisie.

On Friday last week, community members held a night vigil, sending out prayers and words of encouragement for the safe return of the girl.

Hanover Park Civic Association spokesperson Igshaan Nazier, who coordinated a search, says they started searching for Sasha on Monday morning, the day after her disappearance.

“Her parents last saw Sasha round about

16:00 on Sunday. She was reported missing the next morning. We started our search at 10:00 the same day she was reported missing,” he says.

Nazier adds she was playing with friends in the road when she went missing.

“Her parents said the last time they saw her was just after 16:00 on Sunday and did not know she went missing at the time. They then went to Philippi police station the next morning to report her missing,” he adds.

Sasha’s eldest sister Jasmine Harris (27) says the family is hurt by the disappearance of her sibling and that speculations about her disappearance have added salt to the wound.

“We are anxious for the return of our sister. People have been spreading rumours saying we know where she is and that we found her in our bathroom a long time ago.

What do they think of us? We would never hurt our own blood,” she says.

Philippi police spokesperson Lieutenant Lance Goliath confirms Sasha was reported missing at his station.

“This office confirms that a six-year-old girl of Groenal Walk has gone missing on Sunday 3 May at about 16:00,” he says.

He adds residents, family and many organisations, including the local community police forum, police, Pink Ladies, neighbourhood watch and other law enforcement agencies, got involved in the search.

“The missing child was last seen playing with friends about a block away from her house. We are following up on all leads and information,” Goliath confirms.

A joint operations centre has been established at the Philippi police station.

At the time of going to print Sasha was not yet found, Nazier confirms.

The support from the community has been amazing and we are grateful for all donations received and moral support offered,” he says.

The siblings add that their home has had a very sombre atmosphere since Sasha went missing.

“Our 10-year-old brother doesn’t even want to be in the house because he says our sister isn’t here. He is very hurt by it and the atmosphere at home is just not the same.”

The family has expressed heartfelt thanks to the community for assisting in the search since Monday.

“Since the search started we have received overwhelming response from the community. We appreciate the support and all donations received during this trying time.”

Two of the fires ‘were arson’

I

t seems that the fires that ravaged the southern peninsula in March were started accidentally and on purpose. The different large-scale fires had separate causes, an expert has found.

This is according to a statement by the City of Cape Town.

The City’s fire and rescue service, disaster risk management staff and volunteers, Table Mountain National Park, Working On Fire volunteers, wild land fire services and volunteer wild fire services all came together to minimise the damage and save lives, property and the environment. It is provisionally estimated that it cost the ratepayer between R20m and R40m.

Once the fire had died down, the City commissioned an investigation by local forensic investigator Dr David Klatzow. This was done in order to minimise the possibility of repetition by looking into the cause of the fires. Following are excerpts from his investigative report.

Causes of the fire “On Sunday 1 March, a fire which appears to have originated at the apex of the mountain peaks above St James in the southern peninsula broke out. It rapidly advanced with a strong south-easterly wind and within a short time had traversed Ou Kaapse Weg and effectively did not stop until reaching Hout Bay. “Early on in the investigation I had identified the general fire origin as being on the crest of Pecks Valley at a position just out of sight of the road through St James.

“On ascending the peak from Boyes Drive on 19 March, I observed a shelter of sorts with signs of human habitation.

There was a partially burned blanket, together with clear signs of fire-making and smoking material and two lighters. There is little doubt that the main fire which burned across to Hout Bay had its origin in or near this rock shelter and that its cause was human agency.

“It is important to note that the other possible causes of fire, weather conditions and absence of electrical causes could be excluded in this case.

“The use of this part of the mountain for various informal activities is well-known to the local inhabitants. Further observations regarding the presence of religious groups on the mountains at night was also provided by residents and a professor of the School of Architecture at the University of Cape Town.

“The possibility that this fire may have been deliberately started cannot be ruled out, but in my view seems unlikely.”

“Given this anatomy of a fire, it is somewhat concerning to note the rapid spread of fire towards the west. In this context, the observations made by a resident of Fish Hoek are most informative. He observed through binoculars that a group of people who were carrying torches were setting fires on the mountainside. They set one fire and when it went out, they returned to re-ignite it. This would be a very plausible explanation for the seemingly rapid spread towards the west which is in contrast to the normal fire pattern expected from the position of the source and the prevailing wind conditions.

“I also considered the fire which occurred along the road out of Scarborough.

This occurred late in the afternoon. Its position and timing suggest very strongly that this is again of human origin. There were no potential electrical causes present.

“It has the typical anatomy of a single origin fire and it can be seen that its origin is a metre or two off the road.

“It is my opinion that the probabilities in this case favour a deliberate human causation.”

Conclusions . “St James and Southern Peninsula: The fire which started at the top of Pecks Valley above St James was in all probability accidentally caused by vagrants, religious groups or overnight campers.” . “Clovelly: The fires burning along these slopes were most likely caused by deliberate human agency with the view of starting a large-scale fire.” . “Scarborough: The fire along Scarborough Road was most likely caused by deliberate human agency with the view of starting a large-scale fire.”

Fire­safety tips

Details of the fires “Generally, a fire such as that occurring on the mountain above St James will largely conform to the standard burn pattern of fires of its type.

The shape and ferocity of this type of fire is modified both up and down by factors such as exact nature of the fuel source, the topography of the fire terrain and, most importantly, the wind. Generally, a fire will proceed most rapidly in the direction of the prevailing wind.

“Fires spread slowly in a lateral direction and even more slowly against the pre-

A

fter serving at the Grassy Park police station for more than 18 years, newly promoted Lieutenant Eltino Botman will be moving to a new station.

Botman jokes that he still has to get used to his new rank after introducing himself as a warrant officer.

“I still have to get used to the title. If you have been working under another rank for so long it does take some getting used to,” he chuckles.

Botman served as the sector manager for Parkwood from 2010 and says he “really enjoyed the area”.

“I have really grown attached to the people of Parkwood. You could say that Parkwood and Grassy Park as a whole has become a part of me,” he says.

Botman was promoted to the rank of lieutenant on Tuesday 5 March and says he looks forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

Well­equipped “I know with a new rank comes added responsibilities. I am ready to tackle these head-on,” he adds.

Botman says his years as a police officer has equipped him with the tools to be a leader.

“I will be transferring to my new station and intend to implement all the leadership qualities I have gained through the years while working at this police station. I will be a shift commander and I already know what is expected of me so I will do that to the best of my ability,” he says.

Wyk says he wishes Botman well in his new work.

“He has been a diligent worker at this station and I know he will do well. He was a real asset in this community and the people in Parkwood know him very well,” Van Wyk says.

Botman adds that he will miss the Grassy

Park community. He thanks the residents for their support.

He says that “when you work at Grassy Park police station you can go work anywhere”.

“I am a hard worker and know that my efforts were appreciated in the community that I will now be leaving behind. I know

that I can come back into the community anytime because we have cultivated a relationship over the years.”

Grateful Botman parts with gratitude to the community he worked with and the staff at the Grassy Park police station.

“Working at Grassy Park police station has prepared me well for what is to come. The community has been really supportive and I thank them for that. I am grateful for it all,” he adds.

Woman, man arrested in shebeen A

52-year-old woman and 22-year-old man appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court yesterday on charges of dealing in dagga and selling liquor without a licence.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says police members were busy with operations on Friday at about 15:00 when they also searched a wellknown shebeen in 6th Avenue, Grassy Park.

“According to the police members and residents this is a well-known outlet where alcohol and dagga are sold. The operation proved to be a success,” Kleinsmith says.

Two dagga parcels, 40 stoppe and 32 bankies was found as well as an undisclosed amount of cash. “Upon searching the premises liquor to the amount of 512.36F was confiscated,” she adds.

In another incident two men were arrested in Ottery for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition and on charges of attempted murder.

“During a crime prevention operation on Sunday afternoon at about 15:00 the operation combat members of Faure responded to shooting in progress in the Ottery flats. The members spotted a suspicious male with a firearm firing two shots and handing it back to a shorter male, dressed in black,” Kleinsmith says.

She adds a police member then set chase after the man with the firearm ran up a flight of stairs.

“The man then fired two shots at the officer and the officer returned fire. His colleague then went after the suspect when members heard another gunshot go off.”

The suspect was arrested and the firearm retrieved.

One of the suspects, aged 25, was apprehended in Steward Court, Ottery.

“Police confiscated a Lager 380/15 auto pistol, a 9mm caliber, brown wooden handle, two magazines and seven 9mm rounds. The first suspect, aged 44, who handed the gun over, was arrested as well.”

The suspects will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on three charges, namely illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and attempted murder.

“Police are further investigating whether the suspect could possibly be linked to any shooting and other serious crime,” Kleinsmith adds.

In another incident on Saturday at 12:00 the operation combat of Faure was busy

with patrols when they searched a 22-yearold man.

“Upon searching the man, members found 292 packets of tik in his pocket. The suspect was arrested and appeared in court yesterday on charges of possession of drugs.”

Grassy Park station commander Colonel Shawn van Wyk says police will continue clamping down on crime and the perpetrators thereof.

“Police will maintain their zero tolerance approach in the combatting and investigation of crime. He commends his members for a job well done and thanks the community for their contribution in the fight against crime,” Kleinsmith says.

A

young Lavender Hill dance duo are set on putting their best foot forward and making South Africa proud at a global competition in Moldova.

Jade Cerff (11) and Joel Lottering (14) are competing at the World Championship Junior 2 Standard on 11 October.

Their two lives have taken an exciting new direction.

Jade says dancing has kept her off the streets, out of trouble and focused on her goals in life.

“If it was not for dance I would not have been so determined to make a success of my life,” she says. Joel shares Jade’s sentiment that dancing has given them the opportunity to explore life from a different view, despite the gang-riddled community they live in.

“I love dancing, it is a way of life for me,” he says.

Between the two of them they have 15 years of dance experience. They have been dancing together for about three years.

Jade and Joel are dance students at Kim Dance Studio in Ottery. The two have a tight schedule which includes practising their dance routines three days a week, with the last practice on Friday evenings.

“We practise for about two hours at a time, whereas on a Friday we practise from about 20:00 until 21:30,” Jade says.

However, the duo says as much as dancing is important to them, their academics play a vital role in being successful. Joel says they put as much effort into their school work as they do into dancing.

Now that the two have been selected to represent their country they need financial assistance.

They require about R60 000 to pay for flights and accommodation as well as their dance outfits.

“We would appreciate it if we could get the support to make our dreams come true.

“To represent the country at the competition would make us really proud,” the duo says.

Kids need a healthy diet for body and school Children are growing and learning every day and to make sure that they have the nutrients they need to grow normally, it is important that they follow a healthy diet.

A healthy diet will help a child to develop strong bones, grow healthily, concentrate at school and maintain a healthy weight.

A healthy diet can also protect against chronic diseases in the future such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, heart disease, strokes and joint problems. The following article is 1 in a series of 2 about feeding practices for caregivers. Remember that these are basic guidelines, and that they should be adapted to fit in with your lives.

Liquids and solids When and how often should you feed a child? .Only start adding solids and liquids – other than breastmilk – at six months. .If the child is being breastfed, give him breastmilk after meals. .Children older than one should get five meals a day. .Feed them veg and fruit every day.

.Choose maize meal or oats rather than baby porridge or Marie Biscuit porridge. . Home-cooked meals are better than take-aways. . Replace fizzy drinks with water.

Tips for feeding . For breakfast feed your child porridge. . For lunch or supper when they are older, feed your child rice and chicken, vegetables steamed or boiled or fish steamed or baked. . Snacks should be fruit or yogurt and not chips and sweets. . Avoid juice and fizzy drinks – water and milk are better.

It is important to note that in a healthy diet, breastmilk is best, even for HIVpositive mothers. You also don’t have to be the mother to help give a child a healthy diet. And visit your clinic regularly so that the child may be weighed and development checked.

New CPF leaders chosen CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen

Lansdowne community police forum (CPF) has a new chairperson, secretary and assistant-secretary.

The CPF took up a new structure on Tuesday last week after a special election was held in the York Road Mosque in Lansdowne.

People’s Post previously reported that the these appointments were necessary after three members resigned (“Forum to get new leaders”, 21 April).

Newly-elected chairperson Hanif Loonat says he is positive about change for the area and looks forward to working in the new position.

A new secretary, Basil Davids, and assistant-secretary, Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka, were also elected.

“It has been mandated that we should form partnerships with the police and communities and therefore a functional CPF structure is needed. We need to work against evils in our community with the police because they cannot do this alone. I am looking forward to being a part of this relationship,” Loonat said.

During his motivation on why he should be appointed as CPF chairperson, Loonat said he had a passion for fighting crime and wanted to “curb the collusion between police and gangsters in the province”.

“We need to eradicate corruption within in our policing sector. The collusion between corrupt police officers and gangsters needs to come to an end and organisations such as the CPF should have a passion for this cause so that this behaviour can be eradicated,” Loonat enthused.

The structure was elected after the previous chairperson and secretary resigned due to unknown reasons.

Lansdowne police station commander Colonel Jan Alexander said during the meeting he was positive about the way forward.

“Due to events that transpired we should all keep positive and move forward in a positive light. With this new structure that was elected we hope to eradicate all negativity and politics that occurred previously,” Alexander said.

He added community participation in the fight against crime was very important. Alexander encouraged residents and organisations to get involved and to support the police as well as the CPF. “We cannot curb crime by ourselves. The police needs the community and vice versa,” Alexander said.

He also shared sentiments on the collapse of the previous CPF structure that resulted in the special election. He encouraged residents and the newly-elected members not to become despondent.

“We do not want to face a situation where members are elected but later on we realise we made a mistake as people are not committed to progression. The community puts their trust in this structure and we need it to be stable,” he said.

Loonat, after being officially elected, said he intended to stay with the CPF for “very long and you will have to fight very hard to get me off my seat”.

“I am prepared to fight for my community and I am very humbled to be elected as your servant. I am positive that the CPF team will work hard in the manner expected,” he said.

Loonat said that the CPF’s first action would be to host imbizos with residents and organisations in the area to find solutions to crime together.

“We are sitting with challenges in Lansdowne and these will take priority,” he said.

Keep an eye on your child

A child goes missing every five hours in South Africa.

This amounts to 1 697 children a year of whom 23% are not found, according to statistics released by the police’s Missing Persons Bureau in 2013.

In 2015 the picture is however not looking much brighter.

Parents of a four-year-old Bloekombos boy is in mourning after his body was found in a nearby dam a few days after he went missing.

Closer to home the community of Hanover Park is still looking for six-year-old Sasha-Lee November who has been missing for over a week.

While the parents of missing children holds on to every little bit of hope, the truth is we as parents should take more responsibility for the comings and goings of our children.

How often do you hear of toddlers playing unsupervised in the street, or parents assuming their children were visiting friends or relatives?

The fact is no young child should be left unattended.

A four-year-old should not be playing in the street or left unsupervised in your front yard. Their seven-year-old sibling also does not count as proper supervision.

School-going children should be made aware from an early age about “stranger danger” and what to do if someone offers them treats or a ride. Teaching them to be street smart should be one of a parent’s top priorities.

And in case they should get lost, they should know at least one parent’s phone number by heart and who to approach for help.

Even teenagers should be aware of the dangers of leaving the safety of your home or school without telling anyone where you are going.

Safety starts at home.

Good kids from single, stern mums In referral to your editorial comment “Real Men” published on 5 May, I have to disagree.

Was it really necessary to just blame single mothers for the way our children are growing up? I fully agree that some kids turn to crime not because they were brought up by a single mother, but for many other reasons as well.

Many kids grow up in a beautiful home with both parents and yet they still turn to drugs. Children may have both parents present yet not get that love and attention that they crave and need, so they turn to drugs.

Yes, boys need a father figure to teach them things and a mother alone can never fully play the role of both

parents, but from my personal experience and people I know not just referring to things in general, the good children are the ones that mostly come from single yet stern mothers who with everything in their power rear their children to be respectful and honest people and not just gangsters and drug lords.

I know that we are all entitled to our own opinions so that’s just mine.

Look at role models I fully agree with the sentiments of the article written regarding real men (Editorial comment, People’s Post, 5 May).

Teen alphabet soup

GAVIN FISH Are you ODD? No really! Are you Oppositional Defiance Disordered? Do you suffer from PTSD? Are you ADD or ADHD? How about OCD or PCD? Is my list becoming more or less familiar to you?

The alphabet soup of possible teenage conditions is giddying. Frustrated parents anxiously bounce from pill to practitioner to find an explanation for or relief from the unexplainable.

Don’t get me wrong. The advances in research are staggering. More has been learnt about the brain in the past two decades than in the previous 100 years. Medical progress has made yesterday’s death sentence today’s “manageable condition.”

Psychological research and studies over

30 years have vastly improved our understanding of the teen psyche.

So do we disregard, or interrogate at enormous expense and time? What we shouldn’t do is clutch our anxious brow with a “this too shall pass” attitude.

Where to start? Well, for example, ADHD is real. The only scoffers are those who have never lived with or taught a teen with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. And so we could progress the debate through the full alphabet soup. That is not the point, however.

May I caution against the need to label and medicate any and every perceived “abnormality.” There is an entire industry that will gleefully accommodate your every twitch. Read voraciously, research your concern, talk to others, spend time

with. That is, spend time with your teen, not the perceived condition. A loving parents’ instincts are seldom far off the mark.

May I caution against boxing and labelling a “condition” whose real and clear origin is relational and sadly, often seated firmly in the family. It is sometimes easier to label a condition than to acknowledge a more uncomfortable truth.

Psychosomatic factors underline much ill health. I believe that mental and relational health would put paid to our having to treat a range of physical conditions.

That is no reason not to treat for ODD, but rather to have a broad-based approach which quite possibly includes counselling. Sixteen-year-olds who wet their beds persistently are very seldom suffering from a bladder infection.

PANTOMIME

Loukmaan gets wiggy with it LOUISA STEYL @LouNotes

H

e’s one of Cape Town’s most familiar faces, but Loukmaan Adams has undergone a complete makeover for his role in Liewe Heksie: Flower Power.

The pantomime, based on the classic South African character created by Verna Vels, Liewe Heksie, comes to the Bellville Civic Theatre from Tuesday 19 to Sunday 31 May after its successful debut at the Absa KKNK last month.

Loukmaan plays the role of Geraldina Geelheks and he appears on stage in drag, complete with a bright yellow frock.

He even learnt to do his own makeup during the production’s run at the KKNK. “When I say makeup, I am talking about lipstick, lip gloss, lashes, glitter on the eyebrows, high cheekbone lines . . .,” he points out.

To be fair, Loukmaan didn’t know he was going to be playing a female character until his first rehearsal for Liewe Heksie: Flower Power, when his partner, Kim Cloete, informed him he’d probably have to play his role in drag.

His agent had suggested that being involved in the production would boost his “Afrikaans brand”.

“Kim told me the day of the first rehearsal that I am playing the dame!”

While there was plenty about bringing the character to life that Loukmaan found challenging, it was learning the Afrikaans script that he struggled with most.

“I read words that I had never ever heard of, like huigelaar (hypocrite).”

Liewe Heksie: Flower Power was written by Francois Toerien and Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck, otherwise known as Dowwe Dolla, who’s been playing Liewe Heksie so long she says she’s even recited the witch’s lines to her husband in her sleep before.

While many people think pantomimes are for children, Margit points out that a “panto” is more of a grown-up story full of fun and satire.

This production is no different, with plenty of references to current affairs and jokes that children might not necessarily “catch”.

But then, Margit says there are jokes that parents might not “get” either.

With lots of colour, great sound and energy, director Lizz Meiring says pantomime is “satirical comedy on acid”.

“Kim and I would like to start a workshop for the youth where we can apply all our experience in the business and share our knowledge, skills and talent,” he says.

Soccer clubs to register, get tax exemption The South African Revenue Services (Sars) are closing in on soccer officials masquerading as club owners and bosses.

Safa Cape Town’s vice-president, Bennett Bailey, has now called on soccer clubs under its jurisdiction to register with Sars as a public benefit organisation (PBO) to avoid future prosecution.

“Being registered with the taxman holds a plethora of advantages for clubs,” says Bailey.

Sport clubs taking in cash and receiving donations and sponsorships must pay tax on this income. Clubs winning prizemoney in tournaments and competitions are also liable to pay tax on these winnings. Bailey says that businesses assisting with sponsorship and donations to clubs are also required to prove to Sars that they have supported a registered sports club.

According to a tax consultant, who for pro-

fessional reasons did not want to be named, Sars will soon be clamping down on sport clubs. However, he points out that there are soccer clubs that are already under investigation due to dealings in the sale and acquisition of franchises.

Being registered could exempt the clubs from paying these taxes. Clubs would also be able to benefit from Safa national developmental funding.

Clubs will have to write to the tax exemption unit (TEU) in their region to seek permission to be exempted from paying these taxes.

Another requirement is that clubs provide audited financial statements, the club’s constitution and a list of its management committee that takes responsibility for the club’s affairs.

“The enforcement of these regulations will start to put soccer clubs back into the

hands of communities and not individuals because soccer, like any sport, is part and parcel of building communities,” he said.

Bailey recently stepped down as president of Rygate LFA after being at its helm for 11 years.

“Although the Safa constitution allows me to have stayed on as president of Rygate, I decided to step down to give someone with new ideas an opportunity to lead. I am now the vice-president of Safa Cape Town with a mission to break down those artificial racial barriers which has been created by certain individuals.

“My entire energy during my term will be spent on it. Already people from different groups are starting to talk, which augers well for non-racialism.

ne of arguably the best 17-year-old female sprinters in the country is the April winner of the People’s Post/Let’s Play Siyadlala Sport Star of the Month.

Tamzin Thomas, who lives in Mitchell’s Plain, is a Grade 12 pupil at Western Cape Sports School in Kuils River.

She is the current South African and African 100m junior champion and also excels in 200m. From 2012 to 2014 she was the WP and SA 100m champion. In 2013 she was a semi-finalist in the 100m race at the World Youth Games held in the Ukraine.

Tamzin won gold medals in the finals of the 100m and 200m events at the SA SubYouth, Youth, Junior and u.23 Track and Field Championships in Bloemfontein at the beginning of April. She also won bronze in the final of the 100m race at the SA Senior Track and Field and Combined Events Championships held at Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch at the end of April.

“My secret to success is training every day and to be grateful for what you have in life and always thank the Lord after each and every event,” Tamzin says.

“My dream for the future is to part of the Olympic team and to win a medal next year at the world champs.”

According to her dad, Peter, she ran her personal best of new 11.68s at the South African Open Track and Field Championships held in Potchefstroom over the weekend and is now the new SA Open woman’s senior champion in the 100m race. Her personal best in the 200m is 23.72s which she ran in Bloemfontein this year.

But Tamzin is also a cracking indoor and beach volleyball player and has earned national colours in both disciplines. . Remember that you can also enter your sport star for our monthly competition.
