Longbeach Mall wins Gold Award J

anine Davidson, Longbeach Mall Marketing Manager, won the South African Shopping Centres Footprint award for the Eco Art Competition that she ran earlier this year at the mall.

She is now entered into an international competition.

“I would love to inform the community of this amazing win for the shopping centre as

The Annual South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Footprint Marketing Awards seek to recognise exceptional shopping centre marketing, innovation and creative achievements, together with economic success, within the South African property industry.

The 2018 Footprint Marketing Award winners were announced on Thursday 18 October at the SACSC Annual Congress, held at Durban’s International Convention Centre.

New safe space opens in Deep South AVRIL FILLIES Vulnerable children who are in need of care, protection and guidance will be able to ask for assistance at The Tree House, a new safe space in Kalk Bay. “The past week we held fundraisers at the Kalk Bay Theatre to raise funds to officially open our doors and to raise awareness in the community about the increasing need for safe houses in the geographical area of the Deep South. The guests spent the evenings enjoying two new dance pieces by Can Creative, headed by Ciara Baldwin and Nathan Bartman. Their most recent work, Sentient Being, is the commissioned work by the Baxter Dance Festival, which is currently running,” says Alison Brown, social worker at The Tree House.

According to her they aligned themselves with Here Manje, a New Yorkbased production company.

Water savvy staff recognised Bulk water staff from the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department who had excelled in their duty to ensure that Cape Town’s catchment areas, dams, reservoirs, water treatment plants and depots are managed to the highest standards, have recently been recognised.

“The City’s Water and Sanitation Department recently celebrated the success that its Bulk Water branch achieved in maintaining its health, safety and quality standards while facing a drought so rare it only has a chance of return every 311 years. Even during this unprecedented drought, health and safety standards did not suffer,” Mayco Member for informal settlements, water, waste services and energy, Xanthea Limberg, says in a statement.

This City branch manages various catchments, dams, reservoirs and water treatment plants across Cape Town. The Safety, Health, Risk, Environmental and Quality (SHREQ) award was implemented in 2013 to encourage best practice at these City facilities and depot.

“We are truly proud of these individuals and honour them for their performance which always exceeds expectations. We knew throughout the drought crisis that we were in safe and expert hands who, together with the people of Cape Town, did their very best to get us through the drought, not only in our bulk water branches but also in our reticulation section, and all of our water professionals in general,” says Limberg.

Barry Wood, Manager: Bulk Water, Water and Sanitation Department, adds: “By ensuring that the safety, health, risk and quality issues of workplaces are kept to a high standard, the City is able to provide the

Joyce Sofisa, based at the Wynberg Reservoir, was named the 2017 SHREQ Champion. Joyce is from Luzuko, Gugulethu and is passionate about safety and quality standards at her workplace. Her life motto being ‘half measures avails us nothing’, speaks volumes as to why there could not be a more fitting recipient for this award.

Graham Alexander, who manages the Voëlvlei Water Treatment Plant, received the 2017 Best Large Plant Manager Award.

Thurston Appels, who manages the Brooklands Water Scheme, was named as both the 2016 and 2017 Best Small Plant Depot Manager.

The 2016 and 2017 SHREQ staff awards were nominated by the depot managers for their commitment to the improvement of the City’s Bulk Water branch SHREQ system­.

Margaret James from Retreat received the 2016 Constantia Nek Water Treatment Plant award and Rocco de Vos, who resides at the Kloofnek Plant staff house, received the 2017 Kloofnek Water Treatment Plant award.

Peter Flower, the City’s previous Water and Sanitation Director, who helped to steer Cape Town through the drought successfully and is now heading up the City’s water augmentation programme was also honoured for his continuous leadership and commitment to the SHREQ system.

Face of Surfer’s Corner changed AVRIL FILLIES

M

uizenberg is changing its face through art and it has now become a hotspot of artistic expression.

On Friday 5 October local graffiti artist Care OneLove painted a mural on a wall at Surfer’s Corner.

“The mural is being supported by Safer Together (organisers of the monthly Moonlight Meander) and the Muizenberg Improvement District.

“The concept for the mural features South African women and speaks about the unique knowledge each woman has, making up a diverse strength (like our constitution is unique/strong/diverse).

“Wisdom that women share connects us to each other and the earth, past and future. It is part of a series of paintings that the artist is working on around Cape Town,” says Keith Edwards, rail tourism marketing and communications manager.

Local women have been invited to participate by having their portrait included on the wall.

The women featured stand out as change makers in the community.

They were also invited to share their wisdom through images and quotes and then took part in the actual painting.

“Currently South Gallery in Main Road is trying to infiltrate the market with new innovative means to showcase what locals can produce, but the trend in the area is murals.

One such artist is Care OneLove who has transformed many surfaces in the area and it is worth doing a walk-about to see the stories being created,” Edwards says.

Because this project is part of a series and will be continuing with different groups of women around South Africa, this mural is

not an end statement but part of a bigger whole.

“The portraits are of real women, living unique lives and impacting the world around them for all different reasons. Artwork like this uplifts and enhances the areas where they can be seen.

“It’s the incredible efforts of groups like this who shape our built environment and we really hope to see our villages of the south becoming physical representations of the vibrant and colourful communities that they are.

“On Wednesday 17 October the group was invited to the wall to see the final product – each of them sharing their story and journey,” he says.

This piece is important for women because it draws attention to being women, and what that means is different for each woman.

“It’s a place for discussion and discovery.

Muizenberg is a vibrant, multicultural suburb. “ It is a place where people encourage and support each other to pursue their purpose because it benefits the whole as opposed to being competitive and pulling each other down.

“Paintings can spark conversation and thinking; everyone’s interpretation is different. This mural has become part of the Muizenberg landscape and it’s our hope that it will have a lasting positive impact,” Edwards says.

Stories close to heart One woman who also took part in the mural says she is humbled to be among the esteemed women depicted on the mural at Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg. “I am proud to be associated with Metrorail as the train

“I am passionate about the role that transport plays in tourism and so glad that I actually can be part of this.

“This mural symbolises my full-circle journey as I will be retiring soon, but at the same time my generations will see the impact that I have made,” she says.

March of remembrance T

he Armistice Month sunset march will take place on Sunday 4 November in Fish Hoek.

The planned march, starting at 16:30, serves to commemorate the Armistice which marks 100 years since the final day of the First World War, in which more than 1.2 million British and Commonwealth armed forces personnel lost their lives.

Bev Frieslich, Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope secretary, says this memorial service enables people to express their gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to recognise those who rebuilt a better nation from its darkest hour “The agreement to end the ‘war to end all wars’ was signed by German, French and British representatives, at 05:00 on the morning of 11 November 1918, but the actual Armistice began six hours later at 11:00. Some countries have officially declared 11 November Armistice Day, while others call it Remembrance Day or Veterans’ Day,” says Frieslich.

The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth) Battledress Shellhole in Fish Hoek will be commemorating the centenary of the Armi-

stice and the 100+ years since the sinking of the SS Mendi.

This will be in conjunction with the Fish Hoek Council, celebrating the centenary of Fish Hoek Town.

The first sale of plots in the town of Fish Hoek, which was previously “crown land” granted by Lord Charles Somerset to Andries Bruins in 1818, took place on 24 April 1918.

The public is invited to attend the Moth sunset parade to commemorate these three auspicious occasions.

The parade will fall in on the 2nd Avenue car park at 16:30 and proceed behind the Cape Town Caledonian Pipe Band down Recreation Road, into the Main Road, around the traffic circle, and will enter the Garden of Remembrance by the Outspan gate.

They will be followed by personnel and vehicles representing various service and emergency organisations.

Guests are invited to support this historical event and be seated in the Garden of Remembrance by 16:30, with the service and wreath laying commencing at 17:00 Refreshments will be served in the Moth Hall after the event.

“There is much excitement in Pelican Park about the completion of the new clinic, not only because of the population growth in the area as a result of new housing developments, but also because Klip Road Clinic is too small to meet the need. We are very excited about the new clinic, because it will have a major positive impact on healthcare provision in Pelican Park and surrounds,” he says.

The Metro Police satellite training facility in Lakeside was one of the sites the multi-party committee of the City of Cape Town’s Safety, Security and Social Services Portfolio Committee visited earlier this month as part of its oversight function.

The Metro Police satellite training facility is situated on the corner of Old Boys and Main roads in Lakeside.

The multi-party committee meets monthly to give various departments within the directorate the opportunity to provide feedback on their financial and service delivery progress.

On Wednesday 10 October committee members took their work outside the Civic Centre and took their oversight function one step further, with a site visit to the World Homeless Day celebrations at the Culemborg Safe Space at the Culemborg bridge on the Foreshore. They also checked on the progress of the new construction project at Pelican Park Clinic on the corner of Oystercatcher and Babbler streets, and paid a visit to Klip Road Clinic in Klip Road in Lotus River.

CRIME WRAP V Ocean View: Sindiswa Dubeni (44) from Ocean View is out on bail after she appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to dealing in mandrax and dealing in dagga on Tuesday 16 October. Dion Gopie (36), also from Ocean View and her co-accused, appeared on the same charges. “They were arrested on Sunday 14 October when the Ocean View crime prevention unit conducted crime operations in Ocean View and Masiphumelele. The police responded to a tip off on Sunday which led them to an address in Masiphumelele where they found Gopie and recovered 371 mandrax tablets in his possession. The tablets have an estimated street value of R18 550. Later the same day, police went to the Wetlands and recovered 27 parcels of dagga and 13 bankies containing dagga.

Dubeni was arrested for dealing in dagga,” Sergeant Leon Fortuin, spokesperson for the Ocean View police said. He added that drugs contribute to the amount of violence in the area. “We have taken more drugs off the streets and we hope that this will serve as a deterrent to the criminals that crime does not pay. The community should not be afraid to come forward with any information they have with regards to illegal activities,” Fortuin said.

V Simon’s Town: A 34-year-old man was arrested for possession of six abalone on Monday 8 October at approximately 11:50 for poaching at Simon’s Town Harbour. He was charged before for the same offence in 2011, 2017 and in May 2018.

VOcean View: Faniswa Ngwene (24) from Masiphumelele appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s court on Friday 5 October on a charge related to dealing in dagga.

Wynberg cluster police and Ocean View police conducted crime operations when they were patrolling the wetlands in Masiphumelele searching for a wanted suspect, which led them to a specific address. Upon entering the premises the police found Ngwene busy sorting two 20F oil containers filled with dagga. This amount of dagga is much more than the amount allowed for personal consumption under the new law, police say. They arrested her and the dagga found weighed 4.8kg and has an estimated street value of R4800. Sergeant Leon Fortuin, spokesperson for the Ocean View police, says there is still a lot of confusion regarding the new laws pertaining to dagga but people should not abuse the law by having such large amounts of dagga in their possession. V Muizenberg: Numerous operations held in the Muizenberg police precinct have yielded several successes. On Thursday 27 September at 01:30, members of Law Enforcement were busy with foot patrols in Kalk Bay and observed what was possibly a drug transaction. They approached a well-known car guard and after searching the suspect, found him to be in possession of eight packets of cocaine and a large amount of cash. A 43-year-old Congolese national was arrested and detained at Muizenberg Police Station on charges of dealing in narcotics. He was due to appear in court. Later that same day a cordon-andsearch operation was launched in Hillview and surrounding areas, which is part of the ongoing strategy to combat gangsterism in the area. During the operation, two arrests were effected for the possession of ammunition after a house was searched in Potberg Road. The seizure yielded two 9mm rounds, a .38 Special round as well as two 6.35mm rounds of live ammunition. A .38 Special Rossi revolver was also found abandoned. A 40-year-old male and 41-year-old female, both residents of Hillview, were subsequently arrested and detained at Muizenberg Police Station on charges of illegal possession of ammunition. Both suspects appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court. Lieutenant-Colonel Mzwandile Gqabi, acting station Ccommander of Muizenberg police, has urged the public to be supportive of their local police and provide information which could assist in their fight against crime.

Keeping safe in cyberspace October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, an internationally recognised campaign held each year to raise awareness around the importance of keeping safe in cyberspace. The campaign focuses on educating individuals on how to be more secure online by following a few simple steps to protect themselves, their families, their workplace, their devices and, most importantly, their children.

This year the City of Cape Town, which is striving to be “the most digitally connected city on the continent”, has cautioned residents to take safety precautions.

“To keep pace with technology, the City offers a host of e-services for its residents including emailed rates statements, online renewal of vehicle licences and logging of service requests, among a whole host of other services. As technology evolves, so do the capabilities of cybercriminals to scam and fool clients in various industries. Residents are cautioned that some may try to trick them by impersonating the City, which places them at risk,” says Mayco member for corporate services, Raelene Arendse.

Entire families are using the internet to study, work and socialise, explains Arendse.

“Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that the entire family, including children, learn to use the internet safely and responsibly. With more people having internet access through 4G devices and networks at home, and internet usage on the rise, large amounts of personal information are being stored on devices, on social media platforms and in the cloud.

“Irrespective of where individuals work, we all have a shared responsibility to protect the organisation online. The separation between work and our daily lives has become increasingly blurred; therefore, it is more important than ever to be certain that smart cybersecurity straddles the two.”

The City’s Information Services and Technology Department has for a number of years been doing its bit to educate employees on the importance of cybersecurity and why it’s vital to protect yourself, and your information, online, Arendse says.

“The department has developed a Cybersecurity Handbook that highlights different types of digital risks and threats, and provides advice and useful tips for staying safe online. There have been numerous requests by employees to make the handbook available to their families. I am pleased to advise that we have taken this to heart and made the publication available,” says Arendse.

Dozens nabbed by police I

n their ongoing endeavours to eradicate the scourge of crime in our communities, Muizenberg police,with the assistance of various Law Enforcement agencies, have over the past weeks arrested a total of 45 people for offences varying from shoplifting to murder.

The arrests include robbery (six), theft (two), shoplifting (four), possession of narcotics (12), assault including GBH (five), selling liquor without a licence, housebreaking and attempted theft (two), possession of imi-

tation firearms (two), sexual assault, child abandonment, attempted murder, fraud, crimen injuria, intimidation (two) and rape, while three people were arrested for murder.

During some of the above arrests, the following confiscations were effected: 19 stops of dagga, three packets of dagga and a loose amount of dagga, 27 half mandrax tablets, four whole mandrax tablets, 32 packets of tik, 97F of alcohol and a shotgun allegedly used in a business robbery. . On Friday 12 October officers of Muizenberg Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) received information pertaining to the illegal possession of a firearm and the possible storage of narcotics.

At about 15:20 the officers approached a residence in Mountain Road Overcome Heights.

During a thorough search of the premises the officers discovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition. Also located during the search, in a clothing cupboard, were 129 packets of tik.

Three suspects, a 29-year-old man and two women, aged 25 and 27, who were occupants of the residence at the time of the search, were arrested and detained at Muizenberg Police Station.

The suspects appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as dealing in narcotics.

The acting station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Mzwandile Gqabi, was extremely pleased with the success and congratulated his officers on a job well done.

Kites flying high at festival Kites were rising high at this year’s 24th Cape Town International Kite Festival in Muizenberg over the weekend.

Street people a ‘great concern’ AVRIL FILLIES

T

he Muizenberg railway bridge is not only known for traffic accidents involving trucks that fail to comply with the height restriction, but street people are making this a new “city” with their structures and families living on the pavements.

In the past month People’s Post wrote about the new measures that the City of Cape Town put in place to make the bridge safer for motorists, since then the number of street people sleeping under the bridge has doubled.

The pavements on both sides of the road are crowded with families occupying the space, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk there.

A local resident complained about the situation and said that the number of people has multiplied to such a degree that they even jostle for the best position on both sides of the road.

With the accident rate of one every month at the bridge, he is concerned that it will only be a matter of time before some of the street people are seriously hurt.

Eddie Andrews, Mayco Member (South) said that the City’s Social Development and Law Enforcement departments consider this to be one of the city’s many hotspots for street people.

“Both departments conduct ongoing operations in this area. The Reintegration Unit of the Social Development Department conducts social outreach operations to help people off the street and into temporary shelter or to be reunited with their families.

“While these services are accepted by some street people in Cape Town, the Reintegration Unit finds the level of success among people frequenting the area in question to be very low. The City cannot force anyone to accept help as homelessness is not a crime,” Andrews says.

Where children are found living on the

street with their parents or on their own, the provincial Department of Social Development is called upon to act, as they serve as the custodian of vulnerable children.

“There is a dedicated team on duty in the area every day during the week. The team has not found any children sleeping on the street in this area recently. However, we do find an increase in children begging in the area annually during the lead-up to the festive season, particularly on weekends.

“Furthermore, the Reintegration Unit works closely with the Muizenberg Central Improvement District, which is also linked to the City’s Street People Coordinating Forum. From a law enforcement perspective, officers enforce the provisions of the bylaw relating to streets, public places and the prevention of noise nuisances,” he says.

The bylaw includes issuing fines and removing people from areas where they are either blocking pavements or roadways or have set up structures.

“The problem is that they return as soon as officers move on. People cannot be arrested for bylaw offences unless they are in contempt of court for failure to pay fines. Given that street people do not have a fixed address, they are often untraceable. It is also virtually impossible to secure an arrest warrant because there is no address on which to serve the warrant.

“The City is lobbying the criminal justice system to identify shortcomings in existing legislation which currently renders enforcement ineffective.

“Until such time, our staff will continue conducting operations in this area – specifically to clear the pavement so that pedestrians can move freely,” Andrews says.

Residents are also urged to refrain from donating directly to individuals, but to channel their donations through registered shelters and non-profit organisations instead.

Dignity Day ‘a huge success’ AVRIL FILLIES

D

ignity Day, a partnership between Revamp the Valley and Social Work Connect, two Fish Hoek-based non-profit organisations, was a huge success at the False Bay TVET College’s Fish Hoek campus on Friday 12 October. The partnership is dedicated to building community democracy across the Valley.

“Dignity Day is a holistic community event that aims to make progress in integrating the homeless into the broader community through proactive and equalising activities. Creating open conversations in a safe space allows the community to deepen their understanding of how easy it can be to lose everything. Progress in ending homelessness can only be made by first seeing the humanity of the most vulnerable members of our community and treating people with respect,” says Leigh Barrett of Revamp the Valley.

The idea of Dignity Day was born from a conversation she had a year ago with Lorraine Tanner of eMzantsi Carnival, who, with her husband, had assisted a homeless woman and seen first-hand how treating someone with kindness and dignity can transform a life. There was a recognition that Fish Hoek has little to no services for the homeless despite the high number of people who live in the area.

“Dignity Day offered a clothing pop-up store with clothing generously donated by local residents, two clothing rails made by local business Creative Designs and manned by the college’s students, who created a great venue and helped people find some new clothes.

“Toiletries were donated by Aerosol SA, facilitated by Chad Hamilton, and many additional donated products went into the clothing store for people to select what they needed,” she says.

The college’s kitchen staff provided scones and refreshments on arrival and then served a healthy buffet-style lunch. Additional food was brought by several volunteers to add to the table.

Emma Raisun offered her expertise in creating résumés for a number of attendees, which were generously printed by the college. The Wellness Centre saw Caron Nieuwstad giving some much-needed haircuts and Leoni Greyling focused on the hands and feet which are constantly exposed to the elements. The Fish Hoek Scribblers writers’ club sent three writers to discover the stories of the homeless. Blogger Charisse Louw says: “I’ve met several of our local homeless people over the past few months and been impressed by their stories. Dignity Day was exactly the galvanising force I needed to focus my intention and understand how I can better serve this community, which is our community. It seemed like the perfect collaboration of meeting basic needs – food, clothing, medical and employment assistance – as well as emotional support and even the delightful mani-pedi service offered by Leoni Greyling of CleoCasa. It was a feelgood experience through and through and she was grateful to have been included.”

She describes the homeless she met as: “Resilient. Funny. Truthful. No different from any of us. Though incredibly vulnerable.”

John, a homeless man, told Charisse: “You have different types of homeless people – those who hate being on the street like myself and others who are happy to be on the street. But it’s a very monotonous life – you’ve got nowhere to go, no goal in the day… I’ve had four phones stolen over the past year so it makes it difficult. I read three or four books a week. Unfortunately, the library is closed at the moment, but they have an honesty shelf.”

Barrett says: “When someone came up to me and said, ‘I can’t tell who is homeless and who isn’t’, I knew we’d got it right! The day was designed to break down barriers, steer away from charitable hand-outs, and inspire conversations between all those who live in this community.”

No social development can be possible without economic development, so Revamp the Valley encourages local businesses to get involved in future events, especially where temporary, part-time or full-time jobs are

Fresh from graduating in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town, Kanya Viljoen’s Afrikaans play is the story of a single evening that unfolds into a lifetime shared between a husband and a wife, their beginning and the beginning of their end.

Viljoen (24), who grew up in Somerset West, says the play was inspired by a mixture of fact and fiction in her own life.

Relationships change and I kept on wondering if it was truly for the better. The fictional element comes from my love of reading. N.P. van Wyk Louw’s Raka forms such a crucial part of the Afrikaans literary canon and I was interested in re-imagining and rewriting this literature. Thus, it forms quite an intricate part of the script,” she says.

The play can resonate with everyone, says Viljoen.

“I think what has made this play so relatable to such a wide audience is the fact that it is based on a very simple truth – that of human relationships. We all can relate to falling in love with the matric boy at school, and then catching yourself within a relationship, not sure how you have gotten to that point. Therefore, I think everyone that comes to Raak leaves with an essential truth that they know about themselves,” she says.

Viljoen started her journey in the arts at a young age with interests in poetry, music and dance.

“My poor parents – I think I must have made them sit through endless hours of impromptu performances. So, it’s always been such an intrinsic part of how I expressed myself within the world, that studying Theatre and Performance seemed like a very organic next step. It never felt like I had any other choice,” she says.

While the arts may be a dying

medium for some, Viljoen believes in the power it holds.

“I am so fortunate to find myself in the world of the arts and every day I am reminded of the power of theatre and performance.

There is such an immense amount of power in the stories we tell, in who we put on stage and in how we imagine ourselves on stage.

If I could leave anyone with some words of advice, it would be to never underestimate the value of your own voice and the telling of your own story.

“What really excites me about theatre is the endless amounts of forms it holds within itself; the power it has to serve as metaphor and as symbol; the fact that one object can be opened up to a multitude of meanings and interpretations. What it really means is that we, as theatre-makers, have an endless amount of possibilities within our reach and that’s exciting,” she says.

Viljoen says she will certainly continue writing plays and hopes to put together many more productions.

“There are quite a few projects that are waiting to be performed and written. I don’t think I have a favourite genre, per se, but I do enjoy using myths and folklore within my writing. There is something quite wonderful about being able to write your own interpretation or re-imagine a story that has existed for many years before.”

Awards for top local learners AVRIL FILLIES

A

total of 84 learners from Simon’s Town High School are currently writing the matric exams. At the valedictory in the school hall on Tuesday 15 October learners received awards for excellence in academics.

Helena Seebran was the Dux recipient for excellence in academics. For the Maritime Awards she received the Newall Family Special Award as well as the JML Barney Sank Part Bursary. Helena also represents the school by being part of a group called the Youth Citizen Action Programme (YCAP).

Samantha Chetty also received an award and has attended the school from Grade 1 to Grade 12. She has been on the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) for many years and has been part of various organisations in and out of school.

She was part of the Moot Court (an extra-

curricular activity at many law schools in which participants take part in simulated court or arbitration proceedings, usually involving drafting memorials or memoranda and participating in oral arguments, the Norwegian exchange programme Mot and the debating team. She is also a Junior Ranger and a member of the Junior City Council.

At the Maritime Awards she also received the Newall Family Special Award.

Curtis Harrison has attended Simon’s Town School from Grade R to Grade 12. He was also an ambassador for the Norwegian programme and is also a member of the Junior City Council.

All three students represented the school in Beijing in China for a music concert this year. The school currently has five A candidates and the matrics write their last paper on Monday 26 November. The results will be available early in January but the date is still to be confirmed.

Girl Guides visit Parliament, Tuynhuys The chief commissioner of Girl Guides South Africa, Sizeka Rensburg, together with 20 girls (including nine from Cape Town), were invited to share a morning with Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, minister in the presidency for the National Planning Commission for Policy and Evaluation, at the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town, including a special breakfast at Tuynhuys.

The visit coincided with International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October. This day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

“Girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads and political leaders,” says Tanya Prinsloo, spokesperson for Girl Guides Cape West.

“Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl Child. Each year the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) celebrates with our #TeamGirl campaign and this year we are focus-

ing on the power and potential of girls,” she says.

“WAGGGS knows girls are already powerful, but sometimes they just need a helping hand to reach their fullest potential. That’s where Girl Guides and Girl Scouts come in. We want all girls to be their own superheroes and use their power to change the world. Girl Guides from Bergvliet, Bothasig, Muizenberg and other areas in the Western Cape were part of the 20 that visited Parliament.”

The girls say it was incredible morning spent with the minister and a guided tour inside of Parliament.

“It was a fun experience to meet the minister and it was nice to know that there are people who really care about Girl Guides and how we can make a difference,” says Kendra Daniels (13).

Rhea Sirkisson (13) adds: “I would like to make people realise that girls and women can do better things in life and are as equal and powerful as men.”

Andile Dlamini (17) says: “I enjoyed touring Parliament, it took us back to where South Africa came from and teaches us to preserve things so that future generations can be able to see it.”

new children’s book is not only sharing the wonders of the ocean, but also raising funds for those who provide essential services on it.

Publisher and children’s author, BD Harris, and creative illustrator Megan Bird bring you The Brave Turtle, a chapter book designed to educate and entertain children with an adventure story of family, bravery and a great respect for our country’s wild waters. Profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) to extend their water safety and drowning prevention programmes.

The NSRI approached publisher Imagnary House with the idea for their next fundraising project to be something that could both raise awareness of their cause and be something that children might naturally enjoy, Harris explains.

“Since the project’s inception, it was known that we were developing this for Sea Rescue and that all profits would run back into their institute. But our larger hope was that the book would carry fond memories for future generations, so that the water safety lessons subtly imbued in the text could last lifetimes.”

Harris explains that the book was in-

spired by “Sea Rescue and all it stands for”.

“The characters and story were born after hearing tales of the brave men and women who spend their days saving lives out at sea, or working to make the ocean a safer place. So, I searched for a while to find a story that would both reflect the power that water holds as well as the noble spirit and bravery in preserving life wherever possible. From out of this search, The Brave Turtle began to be developed and written.”

In The Brave Turtle, heroine Sam late one night rolls off her bed and finds her entire room flooded. And it’s not just her room, but the whole house is filling up with water as the world floods outside.

Confused and cold, Sam is rescued by a wise little turtle called Neville, who takes her along the beautiful underwater highway, teaching her the ways of this watery world.

Floating on driftwood, upturned cars and general flotsam, humans and sea creatures work together to search for and save those lost in the floods.

Sea Rescue spokesperson Andrew Ingram says: “You will become part of the adventure that Sam and Neville have and soon grasp that there are a number of subtly presented life lessons in the book.

Breathe deeply and stay calm. Think be-

fore you do something, and work together. Don’t rush into danger without a plan.

These are all thoughts that Sea Rescue crew have at top of mind when they are responding to an emergency and are equally relevant to this wonderfully illustrated children’s story.”

The book also brings to light the plight of sea turtles, which are classified as threatened species.

Two Oceans Aquarium curator Maryke Musson says the NSRI also plays a role in saving these turtles.

“Through our turtle rehabilitation programme, we have managed to release about 78% of the rescued turtles that end up with us for treatment and recovery.

“This would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts, passion and dedication of our turtle volunteers.

Help fire victims in rebuilding their lives Overcome Heights residents near Muizenberg are still trying to rebuild their lives following a devastating fire that swept off several homes last Friday.

Different people have opened their hearts and dug deep in their pockets to help hundreds of people that were left homeless after the fire gutted about 304 wooden and iron structures in the area.

The MEC of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, visited the area to assess the situation.

The fire took over seven hours to extinguish due to strong winds and difficulty gaining access to the area.

Three of the City’s fire trucks were punctured, hampering their efforts to stop the raging fires. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

Edward Bosch Divisional Commander for Fire and Rescue says wood and iron structures were affected. “The number of people displaced will be verified by the disaster risk management this morning. All occupants were accounted for,” he says.

The City’s Fire Services and Disaster Risk Management departments attended to the fire.

n awesome pitching display by national pitcher Jared Elario set up Bothasig to demolish VOB 17-0 at Chukker Road Sports Complex on Saturday 27 October.

Elario pitched four innings and struck out nine of the 12 VOB hitters he faced. He was relieved by Damian Mitchell who struck out five of the seven hitters he face in two innings.

Darren Smith closed out the game, conceding the only hit by Lance Gordon for VOB in the seventh inning.

Damien Perkins and Derrick Bayliss

shared the pitching duties for VOB. Between them they conceded 12 hits.

VOB’s seven errors and their inability to accumulate hits were their downfall.

In Ottery, home team Thistle beat Grassy Park Crusaders 4-2 in a nail-biting game.

Thistle opened their scoring in the first inning with two runs; Crusaders replied with two of their own in the fourth inning, with Thistle securing victory with a run in the fifth and the seventh innings.

Former Philippi Angels player Ashtavon Moses pitched 3.1 innings before being relieved by left-hander Revan Plaatjies who threw the last 5.1 innings without conceding

a run.

Crusaders started with experienced campaigner Grant Robertson (4.1 innings), who was relieved by former Athlone A’s player Niyaaz Galant (1.2 innings).

Lucien Swartz then took over and pitched the last two innings.

National team to host France The South African senior national team will host the French in a seven-game series from Saturday 3 to Sunday 11 November.

The first two games will be played at Boksburg Cardinals in Johannesburg on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November.

WATER CHAMPS: Eight Sun Valley Primary School learners have achieved Western Province (WP) colours for water polo. Over the past few weeks, several learners trained hard to prepare for the WP trials. The boys and girls gave up a great deal of time. On Sunday 21 October the names of the learners who achieved WP colours were announced. Young surfers at World Champs in California Two local surfers are representing South Africa at the International Surfing Association’s (ISA) World Junior Championships in California this week.

Hout Bay’s Luke Slijpen is competing in the u.18 boys’ section while Scarborough’s Ceara Knight is into round 2 of the u.16 girls’ section.

The championships were officially declared open at Huntington Beach in California on Saturday 27 October with the South African team joining a record-breaking 361 athletes from 44 nations in the opening ceremonies before the first heats of the event took to the waves.

The athletes, and the 136 team officials accompanying them in the stirring parade of nations, were cheered by thousands of spectators lining the streets of Surf City in the United States of America as they marched in full team regalia to the beach on the south side of the iconic Huntington Pier.

There they were greeted by dignitaries and celebrated the signature Sands of the World ceremony in which two members from each team took to the stage and poured sand from their local beach into a glass container while waving their national flag, symbolising the peaceful gathering of nations of the world through surfing.

“Welcome to the largest Vissla ISA Juniors in history. I would like to give a big thank you to Vissla for believing in the power of junior surfing, and as well to the City of Huntington Beach for opening your arms, waves and beach to all of us,” said ISA president Fernando Aguerre in his opening address­.

After a display of local song and dance by

the Surf City Singers from Huntington Beach High School, the competition kicked off with the first 10 heats for u.18 boys and first 11 heats for u.16 boys completed in the punchy head-high waves on offer in front of the two judging towers.

The huge number of competitors – there are 32 heats of four surfers for Round 1 of the boys’ divisions and 24 heats for each girls’ division – has resulted in the duration of the heats being reduced from the customary 20 minutes to a cutthroat 15 minutes.

This increases the contribution that luck plays in the surfers finding and riding two good counting waves during their heat.

The double-elimination format used in ISA events sees surfers advance to the next round in the main event stream as long as they finish first or second in their heats. The top two surfers in round 6 of the main event progress directly to the grand final in their division Competitors who finish third or fourth in main event heats drop into the gruelling repecharge stream. There any result other a top two finish sees them eliminated from the event. The top two in round 10 of the repecharge stream also progress to the grand final­.

The South African team’s first objective in California will be to improve on their 11th place result in the corresponding event in Japan last year. The top seven teams from the previous year, plus the hosting nation, automatically qualify for the ISA Aloha Cup. The four teams accumulating the highest points totals from all four divisions are awarded gold, silver, bronze and copper medals respectively.

his year, the JP21 Mitchell’s Plain Titans race will once again boast a host of highprofile runners, travelling from all over the country to participate alongside locals.

The race will also see Stephen Mokoka, winner of the Cape Town Marathon, travelling from Gauteng to compete.

Mokoka (33) was born in Village 600, Mafikeng in the North West Province, and has been running since his teens.

“I started running in 2003 at Batloung High School. My first professional distance was 10 000m. After my graduation at Vaal Technikon in 2008, I decided to take up running as a career,” says Mokoka.

He has enjoyed much success in this thus far, competing in and winning a variety of distances and races.

“I have been blessed in achieving many good performances in my career. I have been to the IAAF XC in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and IAAF World 21.1km in 2009, 2012, 2014, 2016 and this year,” he says.

“I have also been to the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016. I have won the SA National title in 5000m, 10 000m, 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km. I also won the Shanghai Marathon four times.”

Mokoka trains twice a day, covering 30km. Throughout his career, he says he has

been kept motivated by his family, coach and training group.

Mokoka will compete in the 10km race as part of the Boxer Super Club AC team on Saturday 24 November.

Avid runners and novices alike can tie their laces and try their hand at the 21km, 10km or 5km race. This year, the race is also a league race and is in its 11th year.

Partners include the City of Cape Town, Western Cape Department of Arts, Culture and Sport, Boxer Superstores, Total Sports, Peninsula Beverages, Smile 90.4fm and Liberty Promenade Mall.

Online entries close on Sunday 18 November with manual entries open until the morning of the event. Entry to the 21km race is R90 for licensed runners and R145 for unlicensed runners. Entry to the 10km race is R50 for licensed runners and R80 for unlicensed runners.

The 21km and 10km races will start at Glendale High School and end at Rocklands Sports Field, while the 5km race will start and end at Rocklands Sports Field. The races are open to all.

The event aims to celebrate the history and culture of the area.
