Woodlands a tiking time bomb LAILA MAJIET
THE sale of drugs at council rental stock in Woodlands has residents tripping. Ward councillor Natalie Bent says there are seven known drug houses in Woodlands. However, there is no quick solution to the problem, says Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith. Smith says it can take up to four and a half years to get an eviction order for people peddling drugs in homes owned by the City of Cape Town. Smith has been struggling for four years to get people evicted from a house in Belhar.
However, Woodlands resident Deon Jansen says: “Enough is enough!” The Woodlands community on Tuesday packed the community hall to raise their concerns about drug peddlers and gangsters who are holding the community hostage. Many residents say the parents of criminals are only adding fuel to the fire by covering up for their children when the police find them with drugs or an unlicensed firearm in their possession. Freda “Rose” May says: “We must not cover up for our children when they do wrong. When my son does wrong, I expect the police to take action.” Smith says in order for them to

evict drug dealers from council rental stock, the police and Metro Police are required to obtain sufficient evidence. “If we do not have enough evidence of the criminal activities of the people we want to have evicted, then the case gets thrown out of court.” Speaking at the recent public meeting, Woodlands residents spoke out about how landlords are aware that they are renting their homes to drug dealers, but could care less about the money’s source. However, Smith says sometimes even a judge’s decision on the matter can be a long and tedious process. Smith says: “The judge also sometimes refuses to make a ruling on a case when there are children living in the drug house. However, in my opinion this is reason enough to get an eviction order as no child should live in a tik huis.” The City last year identified about 300 properties out of its 40 000 rental stock which are used for illegal purposes. Meanwhile, a sick woman has to safeguard her teenage son and elderly mother from gangsters. Woodlands residents are having sleepless nights due to the ongoing gang violence between the Gaza gang and the Bad Boys. Charlene Daniels (43) says she is caught in the crossfire as her house is in the middle of where the gangs fight. “They shoot a flare gun and then start shooting at each other. The one gang hides behind my wall when they shoot as I live on a corner. This gives them the perfect vantage point to shoot over to where the other gang is at the bakery,” she explains. Michael Jacobs, chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain cluster Community Police Forum (CPF), con-

Daniels, who is ill, lives with her teenage son and her elderly mother. She says police need to do something about the matter. Woodlands resident, Deon Jansen, says parents should not cover up for their children’s crimes as “no mother gave birth to a gangster”. Woodlands CPF subforum chairperson Kaamillah Ismail says the response time by police is
unacceptable. “We call the police and they take forever to come and attend to the complaint,” she says. Mitchell’s Plain Station Commander, Brigadier Johan Brand, urges the community to call him to report complacent police officers. Jacobs says: “We do not need lazy cops, corrupt cops or bad cops.”
