Children as young as eight are performing oral sex on each other while at school.

This is the startling reality social workers at an anti-abuse organisation have discovered.

And while these children should be playing with dolls and toy cars, they are instead dangerously intrigued by sex and promiscuity.

Corinne Combrink, child protection organisation Safeline’s intake officer, says sexually inappropriate behaviour at schools in Beacon Valley and Tafelsig is on the rise.

“The teachers will catch them in the act and report it to us,” she says.

Teachers and principals in this area have been committed to working with the NGO to address the problem, but parents are in deni-

al of their child’s actions, Combrink maintains. “Parents do not want to believe their child may be involved in inappropriate acts especially when they were not able to pick up any signs prior to the incident,” she adds.

A principal at a Beacon Valley primary school spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity. He says there have been many incidents of sexually inappropriate behaviour between pupils at his school.

The principal of another Beacon Valley primary school claims to have had no such incidents.

Unemployment and overcrowding are two of the possible contributors to sexually inappropriate behaviour among children.

Safeline director Rochelle Philander says: “Cases of backyard dwellers’ children being raped by the landlord is becoming more prevalent. Because backyarders use the toilet inside the main house, it provides land-

lords with a window of opportunity to rape unsuspecting children.”

Colleen Horswell, chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain Education Forum, says similar reports have surfaced in Strandfontein.

“We are especially concerned about this practice as the school holidays draw near.

We can only keep children occupied for so long and that does not even root out the causes.”

Horswell says some of the causes include children sharing the same bed as their parents.

Safeline has further found the number of rape cases involving children is on the up.

The organisation has treated over 390 children this year alone, compared to the total of 250 minors assisted at the facility in 2012.

Alarming statistics indicate children between the ages of two and eight are abused for up to four years before it is reported, Phi-

lander insists. “The justice system has failed the people. Children younger than five are not able to testify and as a result many cases of child rape are withdrawn. The child is put back into the environment where the perpetrator is and the abuse continues,” Philander says.

Six out of seven children referred to Safeline never come for counselling due to parental complacency, Philander says.

Blanche Olivier works at Safeline’s Mitchell’s Plain office and says with most child rape cases the perpetrator is often a relative.

“This is why parents struggle to come forward. In the instance the perpetrator is the mother’s boyfriend or husband, she may worry about the impact reporting the case will have on her family’s financial stability when the perpetrator is the sole breadwinner.”

There is a glimmer of hope for a Lentegeur family who lost everything in a blaze.

Their Bluebell Street home was ravished by a fire last week, the inferno incinerating almost everything in its path.

The fire broke out last Tuesday shortly after 13:00.

Neighbours and community workers have now come together to assist the family.

Bahia Jackson (56) says the fire is believed to have started in the main bedroom at the back of her home, spreading rapidly until reaching the front of the property.

Only one person was home at the time of the blaze.

“My pregnant daughter was asleep in the house. She was woken up by the smell of smoke and managed to get out of the house just in time,” she says.

No injuries were reported and the estimated cost of the damage done amounts to thousands of rands. But not all hope has been lost as the community have now muscled together to help repair the house.

“My neighbours have donated tiles to fix the roof. Members of the Community Work Programme have also availed themselves to clean up the mess left behind by the fire, while other residents have had the rubble removed free of charge.”

She says she is not sure how she will repay them for their efforts. “Everyone has been so supportive and for that I am really grateful.”

The matric pupil is living with a friend as she prepares to complete the final stretch of high school.

“The staff at her school has been very supportive during this trying time. One of her teachers assigned her a study buddy, as all her study material was destroyed in the

fire,” Bahia says.

Darul Arqam Islamic High principal, Sheikh Ebrahim Dawood, says the school has assisted the pupil as far as possible.“She has come this far and it would be a shame if we did not do everything we can to ensure she is well-prepared for her exams.”

HEALTHCARE: MITCHELL’S PLAIN HOSPITAL’S BIRTH PAINS

New trauma unit reaches capacity

The trauma unit at the new Mitchell’s Plain Hospital is already feeling the strain after opening only a month ago.

This is of concern as the hospital is still expected to accommodate patients from the GF Jooste Hospital when the Manenberg facility closes next year.

Professor Craig Househam, the head of the provincial health department, says the emergency centre was full two Saturdays ago with an hour-long waiting time.

“People were already beginning to complain,” he says.

Mercia Isaacs, chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain Hospital Board, says complaints about lengthy waiting periods at the new trauma ward have already started trickling in. “I am concerned that the trauma unit is full especially since the hospital is expected to accommodate patients from GF Jooste as of next year,” she says.

A board meeting is expected to be

held today to address these concerns as well as map the way forward in ensuring quality healthcare for all patients who attend the new facility on AZ Berman Drive.

A group of community representatives have been elected to serve on the hospital board.

Health facility boards play an important role to motivate staff and improve working conditions at government facilities.

The Mitchell’s Plain Hospital board came into office on 1 November. “This will be our second meeting and we plan on tackling all issues brought to our attention,” she insists.

The health facility was officially opened on Tuesday 12 November following four months of commissioning new services at the hospital and transferring services from GF Jooste Hospital to the new facility.

Construction began in October 2009 and was completed in February this year. Completion of the hospital was delayed when a fire caused damage to the emergency centre last year.

Officials say the 230-bed facility will accommodate people living in Mitchell’s Plain and Philippi.

Provincial health minister Theuns Botha says the new health facility is the second hospital commissioned in three years.

Khayelitsha Hospital opened its doors last year.

Speaking at the official launch, Premier Helen Zille said driving onto the hospital grounds was like driving into a hotel at a nature reserve. “The first thing that hits you is the landscape,” she said, adding that the vast green spaces were specially designed to help patients heal.

Meanwhile, Botha says financing the construction of the hospital was a big challenge.

Without the help of a national grant, the proposal for the Mitchell’s Plain Hospital was initially turned down.

But after much convincing, the dream for a state-of-the-art hospital was realised, he says.

Mayor Patricia de Lille says while the hospital is not under municipal control, it will go a long way in delivering the best medical care to the people.

TRANSPORT: DISABLED DEMAND BETTER SERVICE

A grinding halt

He wheels his way through the busy streets of Mitchell’s Plain to get to the public transport interchange.

Crossing busy roads where motorists drive recklessly is a common experience for Charles Murray (53) as he makes his way to the Town Centre taxi rank.

The Eastridge resident says commuting by taxi is the best option for him.

But it is not without its challenges.

Forced to pay the taxi fare of two people, he occupies a seat with his wheelchair next to him.

Travelling by train, which is the cheapest mode of transport, is not an option for Murray.

A lack of access facilities at the Mitchell’s Plain train station has him demanding government do more to ensure equal access to public transport.

Anthony George is in a wheelchair. He was left paralysed from the waist down after he was involved in a car accident 24 years ago. He says: “The train station has no

ramps from the ticket office at Station Plaza on to the platforms, forcing Metrorail security guards to assist commuters in wheelchairs onto the platforms.”

Murray says the humiliation of being carried around can be avoided.

“To get onto the platform at the train station, up to four people have to carry us up a steep flight of stairs,” he says.

With a lack of universally accessible public transport, commuting remains a daily challenge for the disabled, George says.

He is one of thousands of disabled people struggling to commute in Cape Town.

The Tafelsig resident says his dreams of travelling by bus were dashed when the City of Cape Town announced the delay in the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service in Mitchell’s Plain.

The anticipated roll-out of the MyCiTi N2 Express Service has been delayed by six months.

Expected to commence in December, the implementation date is now July 2014.

The N2 Express Service will link Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha to the city centre.

Meanwhile, the Dial-a-Ride service is oversubscribed, leaving some stranded.

“I want to be able to use the same transport as able-bodied people and not be prejudiced against because I am in a wheelchair,” George says.

“In theory, the life of disabled people has changed with a number of policies having been implemented to encourage equal opportunities for all, but in practice more needs to be done to ensure this actually happens.”

The wheels of change are turning too slowly for George and many others like him. “It is a slap in the face that disability is viewed as a welfare and charity issue and not a human rights issue. Disabled people are worth more than just a grant, we don’t want hand-outs. We want government to make sure public transport is accessible for all so that we can make our dreams a reality,” he insists.

George’s wheelchair split in half last week as he was being carried up a flight of stairs at an office block in Mitchell’s Plain.

“I now have to aggressively fundraise to be able to afford a new wheelchair, which costs up to R7000,” he says.

Disability rights activist Marlene le Roux says while council officials are making a concerted effort to make public transport more accessible to all citizens, the poorest of the poor still do not have access to the services.

People living in sub-economic areas are trapped in their houses as a result, she says.

“It is difficult for them to seek employment or to be independent due to the lack of efficient public transport services accessible to them.”

Police are hot on the heels of a group of criminals stripping people of their valuables at the bridge near the Promenade Mall.

The Morgenster Road bridge leading to AZ Berman Drive has become a hotspot for robberies.

Ebrahim Isaacs of the Lentegeur Neighbourhood Watch says a group of men have been seen robbing pedestrians and in some cases even motorists using the bridge.

“These brazen criminals strike mostly during the day in-between

peak-hour traffic. They operate when there aren’t too many cars on the road so as not to risk getting caught,” he says.

Lentegeur Community Policing Forum chairperson Basil Coetzee says the neighbourhood watch has been patrolling the area.

“Crime at the bridge has dropped to virtually zero when they patrol,” he says.

People are urged to refrain from using the stairs leading from the bridge to the railway.

“Unruly elements sit on the stairs that descend to the railway line. They sit and wait before

pouncing on unsuspecting victims. If you approach the bridge and see people sitting there, rather walk towards the houses and find an alternative route,” Coetzee says.

Residents are also encouraged to always walk in groups when near the bridge.

Lentegeur station commander Colonel Elizabeth Hermanus says police have made several arrests in the nearby vicinity.

“Criminals from Eastridge and Beacon Valley are known to be robbing people at the bridge. We have linked one suspect to five cases.”

Police recently arrested six juveniles on a charge of robbery.

“Officers are patrolling there, but the minute we turn our backs then the criminals strike,” Hermanus says.

A resident living near the bridge spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity.

She says she fears walking out of her home knowing criminals are lurking on her doorstep.

“Police do patrol here, but it is not enough. We need to find a way of permanently deterring criminals from using the bridge as a hub for crime,” the 36-year-old woman says.

Residents who are at home should join street committees and patrol the area during the day, she suggests.

STRANDFONTEIN: CITY RECOVERS AFTER DOWNPOUR

As the rain again made an appearance yesterday (Wednesday), Cape Town residents continue to pick up the pieces following a heavy downpour at the weekend.

Shackdwellers have been seriously affected by the recent flash floods.

Many have been forced to spring into action to safeguard their homes from flooding.

through the cracks.

While not too severely affected by flooding, residents living at the Masincedane informal settlement in Strandfontein say their homes do not offer proper shelter from the severe weather.

Anoline Maswan (32) has been living in the shackland for over 20 years.

The ceiling of her home is covered in blue plastic sheets, but the rain continues to seep through. “When we know the rain is coming, we already prepare ourselves for the worst. I begin to line the buckets on the floor to catch the rain where there are holes in the ceiling,” Maswan says.

With the summer months approaching, the recent storm was unexpected, she says.

“We thought our winter worries were over.”

The City of Cape Town is doing its best to provide much-needed relief to residents affected by heavy rains across the city.

Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, council’s head of Disaster Management, says although heavy rains prevailed overnight on Friday, it had a lesser impact on informal settlements than usual.

“This can be attributed to the continuous pro-active work undertaken by the City to mitigate flooding.”

However, some informal settlements located in low-lying areas were affected by the heavy downpour.

An evacuation was initiated in some of these areas and people sheltered in various halls.

So far the City has spent R3m on relief efforts.

PROTESTS: DISGRUNTLED RESIDENTS’ MASS ACTION

Service delivery protests are on the rise in Mitchell’s Plain.

And community workers believe it is a ploy ahead of the 2014 elections.

A large group of protesters made their way through the area at the weekend demanding better services.

Leaders of the opposition were out in full force during the march.

It is understood the protest was held under the banner of the ANC, but some residents say party politics plays no part in stepping up service delivery.

Cheryl King has been living in Hyde Park for 20 years.

With cracks in the walls of her home, gaping holes in the roof, she says she has had no luck in getting City officials to come and investigate the problems.

The City-owned house is falling apart, King says.

“I have made numerous calls to the authorities to come and do repairs. These are council houses; surely I am not liable for upgrading the City’s rental stock?” she seethes.

As heavy rains pummelled the city at the weekend, King was forced to place buckets on the floor to catch the water dripping from the ceiling.

“Many residents are living in squalor. We did not fight for democracy so that we could end up living in poorer conditions,” she says.

Community worker Sulyman Stellenboom believes the plight of the poor is not being heard.

Local government officials should do more than just cut ribbons at ceremonies, he says.

“They need to come and hear the community’s frustrations and provide solutions to their problems. Politicians in power should come and see the dire conditions in which thousands of people are living. Service delivery needs to be stepped up,” he says.

It was anticipated the protest would start at the Rocklands Civic Centre and demonstrators would then make their way to the housing office in Beacon Valley.

Instead, scores of protesters were driven around in buses on Saturday due to the rain.

The large crowd stopped in Tafelsig, Hyde Park and Lost City.

A Hyde Park resident, who asked not to be named, says in all the years she has been living in the area, she has never seen an ANC official come and hear the people’s concerns.

“These are all just tactics to get votes. I will not fall for it,” she says.

The outing included free train trips and buses from Cape Town station to the V&A Waterfront.

The programme forms part of the monthly events Cosatu has been hosting for the last seven years.

“We believe in solidarity and that all our people must enjoy the beauty of Cape Town,” Cosatu’s Tony Ehrenreich says.

STRANDFONTEIN: BURGLARIES SPARK FEAR

Strandfontein has experienced a sudden increase in house burglaries over the past few months – but many fail to report it.

Most of the incidents reported occurred during the early hours of the morning or late at night.

Strandfontein police Station Commander Captain Lulama Qavana says the number of house break-ins peaked during August and September.

However, a decline was recorded in October.

“Fewer cases were reported in October than in September,” she confirms.

But Mario Oostendurp, Strandfontein Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson, says many incidents go unreported.

“What we find is people are reporting it on the Proudly Strandfontein Facebook page, but not to the police.”

This skews crime statistics, he says.

“People don’t realise that by not reporting the house break-in they are robbing the community of possibly having more officers deployed to Strandfontein. The crime rates dictate deployment,” Oostendurp insists.

“Crime statistics need to reflect what is happening in the community. This can only happen if every crime is reported.”

Police authorities are encouraging the public to remain vigilant and safeguard their properties as far as possible.

Qavana says: “Residents must lock their homes and not leave valuables items in their cars. The community must join street committees to be the eyes and ears of the police.”

People are also urged to not build high

fences around their homes so that neighbours are able to see if there is a suspicious person lurking about and immediately contact the police, she adds.

Well before the crack of dawn, a group of dedicated residents gear up for patrols to assist the “under-resourced” Strandfontein Police Station.

People’s Post previously reported a high rate of armed robberies and a single bluelight patrol van prompted the Strandfontein Neighbourhood Watch to step up their efforts in fighting crime (“Taking back the streets”, 17 September).

Sandy Schuter, chairperson of the Strandfontein CPF, says patrols are effective in reducing opportunistic crimes.

But residents are getting despondent.

A Bayview resident’s home was recently burgled.

Speaking to People’s Post on condition of anonymity, the 29-year-old man says his home was burgled once, but an attempt to break into his house was made two more times after that.

Following a non-response from police, he went on to do his own investigation.

“I visited the neighbours, enquiring who was home and may have seen anyone in the streets at the time of the incident. I found a few leads and when my home was nearly burgled for the second time, I called the police and gave them all the information.”

Two months later, several calls and two visits to the police station later, this Bayview resident is yet to get any response to his complaint.

“We just want the officers to do their civic duty. They could not even tell me the status of the investigation,” he says.

COMEDY: ’PLAIN COMEDIENNE OPENS UP

Mel Jones: finding the funny

If she wasn’t cracking jokes for a living, she would be a dancer.

Funny girl Mel Jones was born and raised in Cape Town and is a proud Mitchell’s Plain resident.

She describes herself as fun, silly and passionate.

The single mother brings her life’s observations to the stage, much to the amusement of her audience. “My comedy is loosely based on my life experiences. It’s very observational. I love watching people and their interactions,” she says.

Comedy is a form of story-telling for Jones. “I enjoy taking the audience on a funny journey with twists and turns.”

The funny side of life Finding the funny side of life is what Jones enjoys most. She says: “It’s easy to allow life to get you down, but it’s a lot more gratifying to turn it into something we can all laugh at.” But, not everyone in the audience always laughs. Jones says this is a curveball you learn to deal with as you gain more experience in the industry.

“You have to remember that not

“My parents worked, as did most parents in the community, so my siblings and I spent a lot of time in each other’s company. We had our ups and downs, but for the most part, we had loads of fun.”

However, it is very difficult to stay focused when people are not enjoying themselves, she says.

“Generally, my rule of thumb is ‘Have fun on stage and the audience will have fun too’, but sometimes there are people who don’t.

In those cases, usually acknowledge the elephant in the room and try and turn the situation around by getting them on your side.”

Comedy versus radio Jones spent 10 years in the radio broadcasting industry, both as a producer and presenter.

Her love for comedy is what got her involved in radio in the first place, she says.

“I really enjoyed it, but comedy was always my first love. It’s like a high school sweetheart, I’d imagine, because I never actually had a high school sweetheart.”

Childhood memories When asked where she grew up, she says most people would say that she hasn’t really grown up and she has no intention of doing so.

“I’ve become more responsible, but growing up is so over-rated.”

Jones was born in Bo-Kaap and lived there until her family relocated to Mitchell’s Plain when she was six years old. “That’s where I went to school and lived and laughed with my family,” she says.

Most people expect life in Mitchell’s Plain to be a life filled with poverty, but this wasn’t the case for Jones. As the youngest child of three, she recalls having had a happy childhood. Life had its ups and downs, but Jones says she always

What comedians do in the company of other comedians Some comedians are a lot sillier than others, but cracking jokes is not the only thing they do when in each other’s company.

“The comedy scene in Cape Town is very tight-knit and most of us get along very well. I wouldn’t say that we’re all telling jokes all of the time, but it does seem that way a lot of the time – some jokes being much funnier than others, obviously,” she says.

“Comedy is a form of entertainment and entertainment is an industry. People make a living out of doing this. We just get to have lots of fun in the process,” she beams.

Why comedy?

“I remember being able to make people laugh from a very early age.

It was the one thing I was good at,” Jones recalls.

Finding something you are good at no matter how seemingly insig-

nificant is very important when growing up, she says.

“It is important to focus on something that boosts your confidence.

I wasn’t very pretty or very smart – well, I am now – or very popular, but being funny made me feel special.” But, being funny wasn’t always easy for Jones.

“Children can be cruel and so many of them laughed at me instead of with me, but I wasn’t doing it for them. I was doing it for me.

I was a misfit, so instead of trying to fit in, I started to conform to my own norm. I learned to embrace my quirkiness and being funny was part of that.”

The future of comedy With so many new and exciting developments in the comedy industry, Jones is excited about the future.

“People are embracing comedy with open arms. And why wouldn’t they? We all need to laugh, right?

It gives us a little reprieve from the daily grind and takes us on a miniholiday for a few moments.”

Comedy Central Africa have been hugely influential in promoting local comedy by inviting comedians from around the country to perform on television, she says.

Former District Six resident Shariefa Majiet, who moved to Manenberg during the forced removals, says she is marching for her rights.

“We want our houses. The government has taken too long to register our claims. I’m over 70, as are many of us. We’re sick and dying.

Must we die before we are allowed to return to the place we were born?”

Lavender Hill resident Mogamat Benjamin used to live in MacKenzie Street and still has fond memories of the area. “I used to go to school here. I had friends here. I used to dance in the carnival in these streets. I have lodged a claim, but I’m standing in solidarity with the people removed from District Six. The people must come back.

We belong here,” he says.

The bare fields in the former District Six are a painful reminder to Yacoob Goodall of his Pontac Street home. “It’s changed so much from the place I grew up. I want to come back. There’s something very sad in my heart when I look at it,” he says.

The department is currently completing phase three of a housing project in District Six. Ajam would like to see this third phase of housing developments in the area abandoned, and a 150ha of land given to claimants as restitu-

Almost 400 District Six land claimants marched to Parliament yesterday (Wednesday) to present a memorandum to the national Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.

The claimants are demanding a speedy resolution to their claims and that government fast track an amended law allowing late claimants to submit applications for land restitution, says District Six Working Committee chairperson Shahied Ajam.

The amendment to the Restitution of Land Rights Act no 22 of 1994 has been published for consideration of Parliament, and will allow for the re-opening of the registration process to lodge claims, says Vuyani Nkasayi, provincial spokesperson for the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

The amendment is aimed at people who did not lodge claims before the closing date in December 1998.

“The amendment is undergoing a parliamentary process at this stage. The portfolio committee on Rural Development and Land Reform is going around the country consulting people on their views about the proposed amendment,” Nkasayi says.

The Working Committee’s memorandum offers up remedies for urban restitution, Ajam says.

“At the moment, legislation is

However, District Six Redevelopment and Beneficiary Trust chairperson Anwah Nagia says historically District Six was 98ha, of which only 42ha is left.

The current housing project is for beneficiaries who submitted

their claims in 1998, and will not be affected by late claimants, Nkasayi says.

“The District Six Working Committee is talking about new claims, and at this stage the department has not opened the new land claims process. We are still dealing with valid claims which were lodged before the 1998 closing date. The current development of District Six

was discussed with claimants who lodged claims before 1998, and any call on how to deal with new claims will be discussed once the process has opened. At this stage, the development of District Six will go ahead as per the people’s wishes,” he says.

Nkasayi says the department will respond to the memorandum once they have perused it.

As a young boy Deon Daniels and his family were forcibly removed from District Six and relocated to Mitchell’s Plain.

Life in an area known for its high crime rates and volatile gang culture, was no walk in the park for many, including Daniels, who went onto become a world-renowned hiphop DJ. Better known by his stage name, DJ Ready D, he says hip-hop saved him from a life of poverty and crime.

This local artist is now ploughing back into his community to help empower youth.

Having launched the Greater Cape Am-

bassadors Programme (GCAP), he says widening the horizons of young people is essential in helping them grow beyond the invisible boundaries many associate with life in Mitchell’s Plain.

In partnership with the Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum, 10 youths between the ages of 12 and 17 were chosen to be a part of the GCAP pilot project.

“Growing up in Mitchell’s Plain was challenging, but also very exciting. It shaped my character. I had friends who weren’t good for me. Getting involved in hip-hop helped me to grow,” Ready D says.

After going through many of the same challenges as today’s youth, the radio presenter says the need to uplift young children is ur-

gent.

The programme aims to give youth the chance to experience different things and expose them to a world of opportunities which are just waiting to be explored, Ready D adds.

“It’s about showing them that life has more to offer than they realise, connecting them to opportunities and broadening their horizons,” he says.

Using hip-hop and drifting as a tool to engage the youth, Ready D believes speaking the language of the youth is important when engaging with them.

“These are things they can relate to.

Through various hip-hop workshops and drifting-related activities, the participants are taught leadership skills and imparted with knowledge about various industries.”

Tired of the negativity surrounding Mitchell’s Plain, Ready D conceptualised GCAP four years ago.

However, the project only came to fruition this year.

Participants say they are gaining invaluable life lessons through the programme.

Through the initiative, the youth have also had the opportunity to be a part of the biennial Wings and Wheels Air Show in December.

The event is hosted at the Ysterplaat Airforce base where participants have spent several days engaging with people specialising in aviation.

Abie Isaacs, chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain CPF, says the youth are gaining invaluable life lessons through the programme.

Despite the daily challenges, the youth are faced with, they have risen above their

circumstances and have shown drive and ambition, Isaacs says.

“It was for these reasons this group of 10 was chosen.”

Growing up in Mitchell’s Plain has many challenges, but it is important to know there is more to life than what you see on the streets, he believes.

“The programme has taught me that it takes lots of hard work and determination to make a success of your life,” he says.

“You can’t walk in the street without getting robbed. So I stay indoors with my friends and go to youth and church.”

He encourages teenagers to stay positive about their future. “It is easier to get caught up in wrong things, but try your best to stay out of trouble,” he says.

She says the programme has helped her come out of her shell.

Her dream is to be a flight attendant.

“I am a shy person. Being involved in this project has helped me to interact with others. Hearing about Ready D’s journey to success has inspired me to keep dreaming, work hard and believe I can do anything I set my mind to,” she says.

The CPF’s Denzil Sampson says many youth living in Mitchell’s Plain may believe they face a grim future, but the programme aims to illustrate that this is not the case.

“We want them to know there are people who care and who are willing to invest in their potential. They just have to believe and put in the work to succeed.”

Ready D agrees. “In order to succeed, know there are no shortcuts.”

Receiving the best of care

On Sunday morning my husband Nazeem and I rushed my mother-in-law to hospital.

On arrival the security and porters assisted with such respect and sincerity.

When we arrived, her heart had already stopped beating and she had no pulse.

The doctors took five minutes to resuscitate her, and she was then placed on life support.

Miraculously, she started breathing on her own.

The doctors kept us in the loop for the duration of the medical procedure as they did x-rays and really tried their best to save her life.

She only lived for a few hours and then passed on.

We are so grateful to TOPS: The staff at the Mitchell’s Plain Hospital are top class, citizen the staff at Mitchell’s journalist Nailah Kippie says.

SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIAL SECURITY AGENCY

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), is responsible for the management and payment of social grants. SASSA must ensure that the right social grant is paid to the right person at the right time and place by conducting social grant reviews.

WHAT IS A SOCIAL GRANT REVIEW? SASSA is required by law, to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive social grants. This entails SASSA checking that a beneficiary’s circumstances still make them eligible for a social grant. Social Grant Reviews also assist SASSA in addressing and eradicating fraud.

SASSA CALLS ON ALL THOSE BENEFICIARIES, WHO HAVE RECEIVED CERTIFIED REVIEW LETTERS ,TO ENSURE THAT THEIR SOCIAL GRANT IS REVIEWED. THIS PROCESS MUST BE COMPLETED AT THE NEAREST SASSA CONTACT POINT. FRAIL AND BEDRIDDEN BENEFICIARIES MAY ESTABLISH CONTACT WITH THE NEAREST SASSA LOCAL OFFICE TO ARRANGE FOR A HOME VISIT.

YOU ARE STILL REQUIRED TO REVIEW YOUR SOCIAL GRANT EVEN IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE RE-REGISTRATION PROCESS. WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT REVIEWING YOUR SOCIAL GRANT? SASSA issues notices to review your social grant via registered mail to beneficiaries informing them that they will be allowed a period of 03 months to complete the review process. Should a beneficiary fail to review within the stipulated time frame, the social grant may be suspended.

WHERE CAN YOU COMPLETE THE SOCIAL GRANT REVIEW PROCESS? You may complete the social grant review process at your nearest SASSA contact point. SASSA has also established additional contact points specifically for the completion of the social grant review process. Please refer to the table below to identify the SASSA contact point most convenient for you.

Grassdale to vie for national glory LIAM MOSES @LiamCPT

G

rassdale High School will represent Cape Town at the annual South African Schools Championships.

The school’s soccer team qualified for the tournament after finishing as runners-up in the under-16 South African Schools’ Football Association (Sasfa) Metropolitan Cup. Coach Michael Wiener believes his side has the necessary quality to succeed at the tourney.

“One of the team’s strengths is that the players one know another well, as majority of them play for Crusaders FC,” he says.

“The club did well in the Cape District Local Football Association league and the Engen Knockout Challenge. The there are also a few players from Montague Spurs, Battswood and Milano United.”

He adds his team’s only weakness is converting the chances they create in games.

“We have some players who can score goals; as soon as the exams are complete we will focus on ironing out the finishing problem.”

The tournament will take place in Bloemfontein from Tuesday 10 to Monday 16 December, and has an age cut-off of 17 instead of 16.

Grassdale came just a step away from qualifying for the Metropolitan Cup national finals, losing 4-1 to the Sun Valley Group of Schools team Team captain Valentino Velasco says the loss is the perfect motivation for his side.

“The experience of losing there has made us want to better our skills and improve our

New shirts for Heideveld cricketers LIAM MOSES @LiamCPT The chairperson of Heideveld Cricket Club has described a new sponsorship deal as a “godsend”.

The club’s senior teams received a sponsorship from Tuffy Brands, which sees the club receive new playing shirts worth R3 500.

Chairperson Sidney Charles says the team desperately needed assistance. “It’s a godsend, because many of the guys don’t work; they even struggle get a playing shirt,” he says.

“People struggle to put bread on the table, so you can’t expect them to use the money they have to buy a cricket shirt. It’s a good deed from Tuffy Brands and we are grateful for what we are doing.”

The sponsorship came about after a club member contacted the company and informed them of the club’s plight.

Tuffy Brands marketing manager Rory Murray says the company’s love of cricket made this the perfect investment initiative.

“This is the first step; as we get more involved we will look at other levels of kit,” he says. “We are not looking for benefit out of it. We will obviously get some exposure from 30 guys playing cricket with our brand name on their shirts, but that’s about it.”

The club was formerly known as Willows, until Charles took charge two years ago and

decided the club name needed to be more representative.

Heideveld currently has over 100 players, with two senior teams, as well as under-11, under-12 and under-13 teams.

While most of the first team members can afford their own equipment, the second team and junior members have to get by with the club kit.

“We try to make ends meet and split the equipment evenly. For the juniors we need bats, pads, helmets and balls,” Charles says.

“We don’t really have that much equipment for the juniors, only four sets per team.

The players have to wait for the next player to come out to use the same pads.”

The club’s training ground also falls short of meeting its needs.

The City of Cape Town was recently forced to remove crickets nets just six months after installation, due to theft and vandalism.

Charles says the City has agreed to put up mobile nets, which can be dismantled and stored when not in use – a suggestion made by the club.

Murray says they have already discussed the possibility of a sponsored mobile scoreboard.

“I knew nothing about the area or the club before they contacted me,” Murray says.

“I’m quite shocked; this is the type of initiative brands need to support. We are not in it for exposure – it is more like a feel good project for Tuffy.”

Crusaders chairperson Clinton Fortune believes either Thistle or Crusaders should have been selected as the club to head the programme.

“Devonshire moved into a area where there have been clubs for 30 years,” he says.

“Now they are depleting other club’s playing resources.”

Devonshire’s partnership with the schools forms part of the DCAS Mass Participation, Opportunity and Access, Development and Growth (MOD) Centre programme.

The MOD centre programme see schools provide recreational sport and other extramural activities to pupils. It also allows schools to focus on particular sport codes or

DCAS selected Devonshire Baseball Club to partner with Fairmount High and Montague’s Gift Primary schools as part a sport development programme, leading to the club’s junior ranks swelling as a result. But the chairpersons of Grassy Park’s Crusaders Baseball Club and Ottery’s Thistle Baseball Club have questioned why their clubs were overlooked for the programme.

Thistle chairperson Garth van Eeden says the club has been developing the sport in the area for many years.

“Last year Devonshire had one senior and one junior team. They haven’t been doing development at any of the schools in those areas, while we did. I hold coaching clinics at

Baseball was selected as the focus code for Montague’s Gift and Fairmount and, as per procedure, the closest club to the school is selected as the partner.

The school is then provided with all necessary equipment for the sport, while coaches from the club coach at the schools, either on a voluntary basis or as employees of DCAS. Players from the school can then join the partner club or other clubs.

Van Eeeden believes the club should be selected based on its history of development, while Fortune believes the club that has been in the area longer should be given preference. He also suggests clubs should be allowed to apply to head the programme in a tender process.

But DCAS spokesperson Daniel Johnson says the process does not allow for this.

“The strategy is to link local schools to local clubs,” he says.

“The strategy determined the outcome of

the process. Tender processes are generally linked to procurement and the Public Finance Management Act.” Johnson adds the pupils at schools with focus codes are allowed to join any club.

“While there is a relationship between Montague’s Gift and Devonshire, (pupils) may join any club of their choice,” he says.

“This message will certainly be communicated to all our coaches.”

The procedure does also not allow for the best suited club to be selected, he adds.

Crusaders currently play in the Major League, while Devonshire play in the Promotion League.
