HE stench of rotting food and human waste fills the area, while stray dogs sniff around in search of something edible. This is the sight that greets Tafelsig residents after a vacant piece of land, which forms part of the Wolfgat Nature reserve, was turned into a dumping site. The area, which stretches from AZ Berman Drive to Pyranese Street, is littered with everything from household waste to household rubble, and flies are a constant presence in the air. Ricardo Norton, the chairperson of Mitch-
New Range large selection to choose from
ell’s Village Civic Association, tells People’s Post that the situation has gone from bad to worse in the last four years. “Every time the City of Cape Town cleans the mess up, people come and dump their rubbish at the reserve again. We know the culprits are from all over and this impacts negatively on the community because money has to be taken from another project to clean up this area. “This directly affects service delivery because money is not available as it is being used to clean up sites like these,” says Norton. He continues that the area is disgusting, as people dump old furniture, beds, soiled nappies, rotten fruit and vegetables and con-
struction material. “While doing patrols in the area, the neighbourhood watch has established that one of the perpetrators drives a white bakkie and dumps rotten fruit and vegetables early in the morning or late at night. We want residents to take down the registration number of this bakkie, to take photos of the guilty parties and to report them to us so that this can be stopped.” Ward councillor Sheval Arendse also fingers locals as the problem. “A creche and vendor are two of the main culprits as they dump their rubbish on a daily basis. We clean up the area once a week and when its done the community just comes back to dump some more,” he says.
Arendse explains that it costs over R40 000 to hire a truck and front-end loader for a day, just to clean the area. “This is money that could have been used to fund a community project, yet it’s wasted on cleaning an area that can be kept clean by the community. The residents knows who the perpetrators are, yet they refuse to speak up. People need to change their mindset and take pride in their environment. Report dumping so that the people doing it can be dealt with,” he says. Norton can be contacted on 073 107 6301. Alternatively, report illegal dumping by calling Law Enforcement on 0800 222 771 and give the registration number of the vehicles or the details of the guilty home owners.
