MORE than R100 000 is being pumped into keeping the Eastridge community clean. This comes after residents rolled up their sleeves and took ownership of their public open spaces. The R125 000 project is funded from the additional R200 000 councillors received for the new financial year. Buffalo Park in Eastridge has received a makeover thanks to 12 dedicated residents who invested their sweat and time to clean up the park and put a stop to dumping. Ward councillor Solomon Philander has also now launched a job creation project through which six people living in Ward 79 will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the parks in the area. “The vision is that every park must at least
be cleaned once a week. This will also help in identifying dumping spots,” Philander says. When People’s Post visited the upgraded Buffalo Park, a handful of residents came out of their homes to enjoy an afternoon of sunshine and play a game of dominoes. Edmund Daniels (50) initiated the clean-up and makeover of the park almost three years ago. A statue – complete with horns – symbolic of the park’s name was erected. Melvin “Padda” Kiewitz (35) created a work of art by collecting objects and recycling it to create the piece. Now proud of the handiwork he initiated, Daniels says the park was in an undesirable state before he picked up his tools and set to work. “People would dump anything and everything here, including rubble and dead pets. Now that the park is green and lush we use it mainly to play dominoes and klawerjas. We
even had a domino tournament here where people from Grassy Park came to compete against us,” he says. Those living close by put their money together for the upgrade. They received donations of plants and paint, and the park also boasts a vegetable garden. “About 11 of us do maintenance. These people are dedicated and committed to keeping the space clean,” Daniels adds. Those playing dominoes say they are grateful for the park. Explaining the need for a clean-up project in his ward, Philander says: “Councillors get endless complaints about dumping and neglected public spaces that are used by youth doing illegal activities like smoking dagga.” He says residents have indicated a willingness to take ownership of the parks, but would need the City’s support. He says warning signs have already gone
up at some parks making people aware of the R1 000 dumping fine and R2 000 fine for other offences. An adjacent park is also getting a community makeover. The facility has a jungle gym, sliding board and a netball court. Chairperson of the Eastridge and Beacon Valley Residents’ Association, April Engelbrecht, says while it is a great initiative, maintenance on these revamped parks is essential. “Dumping is a big problem and this park deters people from dumping. However, the community in charge of the park should look at replacing the tyres with wooden structures as it is less likely to be damaged by the wind and sunshine over an extended period of time,” Engelbrecht says. Keith October, who lives near the park, says it is a great recreational facility for all people living close by.
