A

handful of Tafelsig residents are hell bent on having a community organisation evicted.

However, community workers insist they will do everything in their power to prevent this from happening.

Joining Hands has been operating from a container in Voelvlei Street for 25 years.

What started as just a soup kitchen, has grown into an educare, madrassah, youth development centre, church and a meeting place for many other community organisations.

All of this was threatened when the City of Cape Town’s Anti-land Invasion Unit, the Department of Social Development and health inspectors recently visited the premises.

Lungiswa James, Mayoral Committee member for Health, says the City did not receive any formal complaints. However, a complaint lodged with the provincial department of social development was brought to the attention of the City’s health department. “The complaint received related to the manner in which waste was being disposed.

A trench had apparently been dug behind the facility for this purpose after the last visit by City officials in March, when the waste was disposed at a house next door. Environmental Health is in the process of serving a compliance notice in this regard,” James says. The group of residents who lodged complaints against the organisation declined the opportunity to comment.

Heading the organisation is Charles de Long. The Tafelsig resident believes the registered NPO plays a vital role in uplifting residents living nearby.

“This is a base for so many community organisations including the street committees and neighbourhood watch. Without these premises, many safety structures will have no base from which to operate,” he insists.

De Long confirms the trench was made for compost waste.

Kashiefa Harris of the Aids Legal Network in Mitchell’s Plain says the network often uses the premises for community meetings.

“He doesn’t charge us a cent. Because of him we are able to provide essential services and workshops to this community.”

Tafelsig resident Rosaline Scholtz has

been living in the area for five years more than the organisation has been in operation.

The 64-year-old woman says many people rely on the soup kitchen for their daily meal.

“Many of us will go to bed with an empty stomach if it were not for the soup kitchen and the good work of these volunteers,” she says. “I live off my pension which does not see me through the month. I therefore rely on the soup kitchen like many others.”

ganisation tries to assist everyone. “But the reality is it cannot. However, Charles tries as far as possible to assist those in need.”

Belinda Walker, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Special Projects, says the organisation is occupying City-owned land and is not in a lease agreement with the City.

iscarded like dirt. Robbed of a future.

This is the tale of babies left to die after being dumped in a trash can.

But there are alternatives.

Two newborn babies were found dumped in Mitchell’s Plain last week, causing outrage in the community.

Many residents questioned how a mother could dump her baby, but Desriee Uys from Child Welfare Cape Town says there are several risk factors which may cause mothers to resort to such extremities.

substance abuse, domestic violence, teenage pregnancies, HIV, mental illness as well as unplanned pregnancies,” he says.

She says these factors are coupled with the issue that many young mothers are unaware of options available to them, including adoption, foster care and child support.

Department of Social Development spokesperson Melany Kuhn says social workers can be called in at State facilities to assist with alternative care options. “The mother is counselled in terms of her options for alternative care and given time to consider such alternatives, be it adoption, foster care with extended family or post-natal mother and child support,” she says.

“The child can be placed into temporary safe care while the matter is resolved with the biological mother. One has to consider the likelihood of the mother changing her mind, and therefore a process of counselling and explaining all her options is necessary.”

One of the newborns was discovered in a dirt bin at the Town Centre bus terminus in Mitchell’s Plain on Thursday.

A passerby is believed to have made the grim discovery while dropping a sweet paper into the bin on Thursday morning.

The baby boy was found at 08:23.

Police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. People’s Post visited the scene where police officers and security guards gathered.

Curious commuters looked on as police officers cordoned off the area.

The provincial forensic pathology services department arrived at the scene at 10:20.

Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Constable Zandile Marashula says the newborn found in a dirt bin at the Town Centre was alive when it was dumped.

“After a preliminary investigation was completed, an inquest case docket was opened. At that stage the post-mortem was not yet completed,” she says. “Following the completion of the post-mortem it was found

Witnesses say the umbilical cord was still attached. No arrests have yet been made, Marashula adds.

“Anyone with information regarding any newborn baby that went missing or pregnancies that have been terminated under suspicious circumstances is encouraged to contact the police,” she urges.

Meanwhile, a baby boy was found dumped in a bin outside a Strandfontein home last Wednesday morning. A vagrant made the grim discovery while walking near Trafal-

gar Drive.

Sandy Schuter, chairperson of the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum, was at the scene. She encourages pregnant women to seek support.

“We encourage young mothers to seek assistance. We have counsellors available around the clock for the community. Regardless of the situation, there is help,” Schuter says.

A new web page allowing citizens to tip-off the Metro Police will hopefully help to get more criminals arrested.

According to City Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith over 600 drug-related arrests have already been made this year thanks to tip-offs from the public to the Metro Police call centre.

Smith says the City of Cape Town is eager to build on this momentum by providing people with another way to tell them what is happening.

“The web-based tip-off service is the latest addition in the department’s efforts to interact with the public,” he says.

“Our communities have a good sense of what’s going on in their own backyards and we value those who have taken it upon themselves to be part of the solution by

feeding through solid information that has had very positive results.”

In the first quarter of this year, tip-offs from the public resulted in: V 612 drug-related arrests; V Confiscation of 22 060 units of drugs; V 24 arrests for the possession of unlicensed firearms; V and the confiscation of 18 firearms; The bulk of the drug-related arrests were made in Manenberg (82), followed by Parow (45), Grassy Park (43), Hanover Park (39), Ocean View and Mitchell’s Plain (32).

“Every gun we confiscate means one less weapon for gangsters to use and run rampant in our communities. It is frightening to think we have confiscated five firearms in one week, compared to 11 in

a three-month period between October and December last year. Many of our successes have come from community tip-offs and we’d like to appeal to residents to continue assisting us as we try to make our streets safer.”

He says he hopes it spurs others to follow suit and speak out against criminals who are holding their communities hostage and feeding poison to our children.

“We have the systems in place to ensure the tip-offs are redirected via the appropriate channels for action and we’ve also ensured it is mobile friendly, which means people can access it from any internet-enabled cellphone,” he added.

EASTRIDGE: ‘UNLAWFUL’ REMOVAL

A

n Eastridge family who has been evicted from their home has also been charged with trespassing.

This comes after Lucia and Claude Adams, of Grysbok Street, were evicted in what they call an “unlawful eviction” and subsequently moved back into their erstwhile home.

The Adams family is now calling on the authorities to investigate their “unlawful” eviction from the home they bought 11 years ago.

People’s Post is in possession of home loan and other official documents pertaining to ownership of the property.

The Adams family was evicted by the sheriff of the court on Thursday 8 May. With nowhere else to go and fearing their home would be vandalised, they braved the inclement weather and slept on their front porch.

Mother, father, children and grandchildren huddled under blankets to keep watch over their home. The property had been bolted with new locks.

Concerned Eastridge residents stepped in, saying they could not allow their neighbours to sleep outside. Neighbours subsequently put the family back into the property.

Claude claims his house was sold by an estate agent. But a Mitchell’s Plain estate agency is adamant the Adams couple signed off their property to her as they were behind on the bond payments.

Lucia says they ran into financial difficulties when her husband lost his job two years ago. She says they were “never told their house would be repossessed”.

According to records at the Deeds Office, the Grysbok Street property was sold to estate agent Mishka Cassiem who owns Ayoba Real Estates.

The family now questions how they could be evicted from their own home.

The Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB) confirms Cassiem is not a registered real estate agent. An EAAB official confirmed she was last registered in 2008.

Cassiem forwarded emails to People’s Post indicating her requests to the EAAB to be reinstated as an estate agent. She says she has been writing to the board since 2010.

Lucia says: “(Cassiem) arrived on our doorstep long before this debacle. She insisted she was there to stop our house from being sold on auction. At that stage we had not been notified of our property being sold. “(Cassiem) told (us) to pay her R3000 which would be deducted from our bond. In the meantime the house would be transferred to someone else until the bond was squared up.”

But Cassiem disputes this, saying: “They called me in search for help as their house was being foreclosed by the bank.”

Upon realising Cassiem was “scamming us out of our money”, says Lucia, the Adams pair opened a fraud case against her.

Daughter Bronwyn Adams (21) says their gripe is not with the new homeowner.

“We opened a fraud case against the estate agent just over two months ago. She scammed us and we want that case to be finalised first before any further action is taken against us.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt confirms a fraud case was opened and is still being investigated.

But Cassiem insists the deal was above board. She bought the property from the Adams’ for R135 000 and resold it for a profit of R140 000.

Help man find stolen car Have you seen this car?

The bottle-green Golf MK3 Cabriolet was stolen outside a home in Rocklands in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The owner of the car, who does not want to be identified, says the vehicle was stolen from the corners of Sunderland and Beaufort roads around 04:00.

According to a post on the Traffic fines, cameras & updates in Western Cape Facebook page, the car was last seen in Khayelitsha Road on Sunday.

A Facebook user posted: “I am sure I saw this car on the N2. It was being pushed very fast by three big guys. They took the Khayelitsha Road turn-off.”

Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt says the rate of car theft in this neighbourhood has remained steady.

WESTRIDGE: HELP MOM RAISE FUNDS FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANT

W

hen Westridge mom Mishkah Abrahams found out her son was severely deaf all she hoped for was that he could have a “normal” childhood.

The toddler, a playful little soul, loves spending time with other children, but struggles to communicate.

Barely able to sound out a handful of words or hear his mother speak, he remains cheerful.

Only R400 000 stands between Abdud Dayyaan (3) and the ability to hear.

His single mother has to raise funds to have her son fitted with a cochlear implant.

The implant for one ear is R275 000, excluding doctor and hospital fees of R110 000.

While it is hoped the operation will be done later this year, Abdud Dayyaan is not on medical aid and his mother will have to fork out the money to have the costly procedure done at a private facility.

Due to his age, he was turned away from a State health facility, she says. “He had undergone all the necessary tests to see if he is a suitable candidate for the procedure. We stayed at the hospital for two nights only to be told he would have to have the implant done elsewhere.”

Conditions for eligibility is that an implant must be done before the age of three years if a child was born deaf.

The cochlear implant will have to be done on both ears of the little boy who was declared deaf at the age of one year and six months.

However, only one will be done this year.

Abdud Dayyaan is enrolled at the Carel du Toit Centre in Parow where he receives speech therapy and help is given to help him improve his oral communication.

He has learned one new word since being enrolled at the school nearly a year ago.

Learning new words can take several months, his mother says.

“You have to repeat the word hundreds of times before he even catches on. A lot of time and effort is invested to assist him in learn-

With profound hearing loss in the right ear, his mother says having an implant fitted is a matter of urgency.

“He was an outpatient at Red Cross Hospital since two months old. He had a floppy neck and a spinal problem and was receiving physiotherapy. One day I told the doctor I was concerned that he could not yet say mama like most children his age,” she explains.

“Tests were done and I was told my son was deaf. It came as a huge shock. He was a quiet baby, but never had I thought my child could not hear.”

With heaps of potential, Mishkah fears his hearing impairment will see her son “fall by the wayside”.

“I would like him to go to a mainstream school. I believe with

a little help he can learn to hear and speak. These communication tools are essential in life and I only want what is best for him,” she says. Although she knows there is a long road ahead before Abdud Dayyaan is able to communicate and listen with ease, Mishkah is optimistic. “I believe he will be able to speak, read and write if he could hear.”

Mishkah will be hosting fundraisers in the build-up to her son’s operation and urges all to attend to help raise the required funds.

Cost of contravening regulations Based on the findings of the municipal courts, the City of Cape Town is making progress with convictions related to illegal building work and land use transgressions.

A total of 471 court cases were concluded in the past year, which resulted in fines worth R722 650 being issued to individuals who contravened the National Building Regulations (NBR) and the Land Use Planning Ordinance (LUPO).

Fines issued ranged from R500 to R20 000, the cost of which is at the court’s discretion.

Of the 471 cases concluded, about 71.3% of them were for contravening Section 4(1) of the NBR related to “wrongfully and unlawfully performed building works without approved plans”.

Garreth Bloor, the City’s Mayco member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning, says: “The number of concluded cases is proof the municipal courts are recognising the importance of ensuring that transgressors face penalties for building and land use contraventions.

“The City is making progress with convictions, which sends a stern warning to transgressors.

Over the years, municipal courts have started to take the City’s plight more seriously, which has led to more convictions. If property owners do not comply with notices issued when they contravene the NBR and the LUPO, their cases will be heard in the municipal court and they will be convicted.”

The City encourages building

work and land use applications, but this must be done within the confines of the law, which not only protects property owners but also respects the rights of neighbours and the broader community.

“The City is making headway with clamping down on building and land use infringements and we are exploring the possibility of criminalising certain offences for criminal record purposes.

“While we are looking at ways to reduce red tape in order to fasttrack development, it is important that when construction does take place, it adheres to the NBR,” Bloor says.

HOUSING: INVESTORS STILL WAITING FOR HOMES

A

n investment company which aims to assist backyard dwellers has again come under fire.

Desperate for a house of their own, many part with thousands of rands, but are yet to move into their own home.

Summear Investments is again in the spotlight after it was instructed to repay a client, but failed to do so.

Clients have now reached the end of their rope with owner Ebrahim Abrahams and his promise of low-cost housing.

An unemployed Tafelsig woman paid R5000 after she was promised a house in Woodridge, Mitchell’s Plain, but soon realised the housing development was a scam as it was not being run by Summear Investments as she had been told. It was however a project of the Cape Town Community Housing Company (CTCHC).

In a letter which People’s Post has in its possession, the Cape Town Community Housing Company confirms it has no dealings with Summear Investments.

Desperate for a house for her and her children, she believed the investment would pay off.

According to the complaint form submitted to the Small Claims Court, Abrahams had promised to repay the Tafelsig woman.

“They promised to hand over my money within 30 days as stated on the cancellation form. It’s been eight months now and no money has been handed back to me,” it states.

A woman, who only wants to be known as Sadeeqa, says she wishes to cancel her contract with Summear Investments but has struggled for days to make contact with Abrahams. “I paid him the R5000 administration fee. He called me recently to say I should pay another R2000 to secure a

house,” she says. “I did this and believed his business was legitimate. However, a friend informed me that she had paid him money for a house, but years later she has still not received a home of her own.”

Numerous attempts to contact Abrahams has been unsuccessful, Sadeeqa says.

“I have been to his office and his employees say he is not available. I have called him on his cellphone which always goes unanswered.”

The Eastridge resident is now preparing to take the matter to the Small Claims Court.

Another woman, who spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity, says she refuses to wait three years for a house. She paid her first instalment in 2011. “I want my cash back with interest. We cannot be expected to wait three years for a house.

There is also no communication between us and Summear Investments which add to our frustrations,” she says.

Mitchell’s Plain Housing Association officials say they have been inundated with complaints about Summear Investments.

Spokesperson Mariam Essop says many people have attempted to get a refund from Abrahams. “It is sad that people’s desperate need for housing is being taken advantage of.”

Tempers erupted at a public meeting at Summear Investments’ offices at Town Centre in August. A group of outraged investors demanded money back.

Many who have pumped money into the project said they fear their investment will bear no fruit as, to date, no houses have been built. Many of the aggrieved investors paid their first instalment just over three years ago, People’s Post reported (“Investors’ mob wrath”, 3 September).

hile Mitchell’s Plain organisations are gearing up to submit petitions in favour of the relocation of squatters living on Vanguard Drive, the Ses’khona Peoples Rights Movement has vowed to join land invaders in their fight against evictions.

The Cape High Court was to have made a decision on whether or not to evict squatters who had invaded private property near Mitchell’s Plain on Monday 12 May. But the City of Cape Town has asked for

more time to assess the situation.

It is understood City officials wish to conduct a survey before any further action is taken.

Organisations advocating for the relocation of squatters say the numerous postponements in the case is a cause for concern.

Zoraya Petersen, spokesperson of the Highguard Crisis Committee, believes more needs to be done to address the concerns of communities neighbouring the informal settlement.”“It is deeply concerning that the matter has again been postponed.”

United People’s Alliance, a civic movement, is in the process of submitting a peti-

tion to the court in favour of evicting the squatters.

Hyde Park resident of 22 years Seraj Sampson is the chairperson of the movement’s Ward 75 branch.

He believes the informal settlement is a hive for criminal activity.

“Land invaders want a roof over their heads. They will not get that on the land they occupied,” he says. “We have valid safety concerns due to the rise in the number of criminals moving into the informal settlement and therefore believe squatters should be relocated. If the (informal settlement) is no more, criminals will not have conditions which allow them to thrive.”

Several violent and disruptive protests by squatters in February had Mitchell’s Plain residents clamouring for the squatters to be relocated.

Land invaders took to the streets on Monday, singing and chanting as they marched through London Village.

Ward councillor Natalie Bent says she was informed of Siqalo residents marching through the area. However, no reports of violence or intimidation were reported.

When asked what she was doing in a bid to bridge the divide between Siqalo and other areas in her ward, she said: “ Nothing, (as there is) no bridge between the two. There has however been communication between the mayor’s office and Siqalo representatives.”

Mayor Patricia de Lille confirms the matter was postponed.

“The parties agreed to postpone the matter sine die (without assigning a day for a further hearing) in order to conduct a survey of the residents of Siqalo informal settlement. We are currently waiting for the judge to make the draft order an order of the court,” she says.

The City failed to respond to questions about what the survey would assess.

Land owners Robert Ross Demolition and Lyton Props Twelve have submitted separate applications to the Cape High Court in a bid to obtain an eviction order against the residents of Siqalo informal settlement.

The land, which has been invaded, belongs to the two applicants and has an estimated value of R5m.

The matter is before Judge Pat Gamble.

wo men were arrested for cable theft after they were caught red-handed near the Siqalo informal settlement.

The Copperheads held a stake-out operation in the Philippi area on Thursday following numerous complaints by local residents.

Two men were spotted digging a trench in an attempt to steal copper cables on the corners of Vanguard and Highlands drives opposite Siqalo informal settlement near Mitchell’s Plain.

Neil Arendse, head of the City of Cape Town’s Metal Thefts Unit, says officers managed to arrest one of the suspects for attempted theft, but the other fled on foot.

Later the same evening, a different team from the unit was conducting routine operations in the same area when the officers noticed two suspects jumping out of a trench covered with a tree next to Vanguard Drive.

“The suspects ran off when they noticed the officers, but the unit managed to arrest one suspect. After interrogating the sus-

pect, it was found that the thieves operate in groups. One group digs the trenches and leaves, then another group goes to the area that night to steal the cables,” Arendse says.

Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith says replacing stolen City infrastructure diverts ratepayers’ money away from other pressing initiatives.

“The vandalism and theft of City property is a serious concern and the Copperheads therefore have a zero tolerance approach towards this type of crime. Philippi is a cable theft hotspot with two bucket shops in the nearby surrounding area,” he says.

Residents are encouraged to contact the Copperheads on 0800 222 771 with any tipoffs that could lead to the apprehension of persons involved in illegal metals trade.

“The City has numerous deterrents in place and a specialised unit, but we cannot eradicate cable theft without the support of the public. The City thanks the community for their support and for being our eyes and ears,” Smith adds.

The election of the current executive as well as the membership fees have come into question.

But the Mitchell’s Plain Housing Association maintains everything is above board.

Connie Jonkers, an Eastridge homeowner and Ses’Khona volunteer, believes the executive was chosen unconstitutionally.

“They were not elected by the community who they say they represent. I believe the residents of Mitchell’s Plain should vote for the persons they want to represent them,” she says.

Mary Taka, chairperson of the association, says the executive elected the new leadership.

“We were forced to postpone our annual meeting due to the elections. We did not want to have a non-functioning executive in the interim and as a result elected new members.

“Our annual meeting is expected to happen as soon as a suitable venue is confirmed,” she says.

Jonkers adds: “There is also a conflict of interest as the daughter of the association’s chairperson also serves on the executive.”

Taka does not dispute her daughter’s involvement in the organisation.

However, she insists that it does not serve as a conflict of interest.

“My daughter was a member of the former Mitchell’s Plain Backyarders’ Association. She served as a secretary. She therefore had valuable insight into housing matters which could assist us going forward,” Taka maintains.

The association charges a membership fee of R25. On registering with the organisation, a membership card is issued.

The person’s details are captured and recorded for referencing purposes when houses are built in the area.

But Jonkers insists charging a membership fee is unethical.

“There is no charge when you go to the housing office and apply to be registered on the housing waiting list, so why are they charging a R25 sign-up fee?” she asks.

Mariam Essop, spokesperson of the association, says the membership fee is an administrative cost.

“We do not get government funding. We do not receive a salary or minimum wage.

We assist the public at no cost. The membership fee pays for our admin costs like printing. When we need to travel within the area to assist residents with housing matters, we have to fork that money out of our own pocket,” she insists.

“We offer our assistance because we are passionate about serving this community and only have their best interests at heart.”

Felicity Davids of Eastridge has paid R45 to the association.

The backyarder has been on the housing waiting list for nine years.

“I paid R10 twice and when the new registration system was put in place I paid another R25.”

Essop says monies will be refunded if a person is found to have paid the required fee more than once.

“Some people paid twice due to the re-registration process,” she says. “Also, what could have happened is she attended our meetings and at each meeting paid a R10.

Those who have paid twice, but now have to re-register will only have to pay R5.”

ELECTIONS: CAMERAS CONFISCATED

A

freelance photographer as well as a reporter who had their cameras confiscated at a Mitchell’s Plain voting station are being encouraged to lay a charge against the police.

The men in blue confiscated cameras from a freelance photojournalist as well as a reporter from Die Son at Parkhurst Primary School last Wednesday.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says this is in violation of its policies.

Mitchell’s Plain resident and freelance photographer Clint Dixon made his mark at the Westridge school. After casting his ballot he approached the presiding officer for permission to take photos of the jovial scene playing out at the voting station.

He was given the go-ahead and proceeded to take photos outside the polling station.

On his way back to his car, he was however stopped by police officers who threatened to confiscate his camera, Dixon says.

“After voting I went to my car to fetch my camera. A police officer stopped me and said I was not allowed to take photos. I explained that the presiding officer had given me permission and urged him to go with me to her to clear up the matter,” he says. “The matter was then resolved and I took three photos. As I walked out of the gates, the same police officer threatened to confiscate my camera.”

Dixon again explained that he was in fact allowed to take the photographs outside the voting station. But the officer would not relent. “Mitchell’s Plain Cluster Commander

Major General Jeremy Vearey was then called in. He arrived and instructed a lieutenant-colonel to confiscate my camera,” Dixon says. “I then called a reporter from Die Son who arrived within minutes. He then took pictures of what was happening.

Officers then grabbed the reporter and his camera.”

Dixon was prepared to delete the pictures to avoid any conflict, but the police officers “insisted only an expert could delete the photos”.

“We were told our cameras would be returned to us as soon as possible, but officers could not confirm exactly when this would happen.”

Dixon slams police for their “heavyhanded approach to a simple dispute”.

People’s Post contacted Vearey for comment. He declined saying “until the elections are concluded, only the IEC could provide comment on the matter”.

Derrick Marco, electoral operations manager for the IEC, was unaware of the incident. However, he confirms police were acting outside of their mandate.

“We have very strict policies in terms of photographs being taken inside the voting station. But we ease up a bit in terms of taking photos outside the polling stations,” Marco explains. “If what is said is found to be true, the photojournalists can lay a charge against the police officers,” he says.

At polling stations, the presiding officer is in charge, says Marco. “They (the presiding officers) have full jurisdiction in terms of the Electoral Act and not even a police officer can override them,” he says.

The camera has been returned.

SHIREEN HENDRICKS says the DA should improve the education system and the crime rate. “I live in Manenberg and there is way too much crime, especially involving pupils. They should create more sport opportunities to curb gangsterism.”

SIKELELA MATSHAYA believes they should create more job opportunities. “They should kill two birds with one stone by building more houses and employ the people in the rural communities to help build the houses.”

ELIOT MAUKA says the police force should be more involved in the rural areas. “The crime rate is very high and nobody feels safe any more in their own areas. There should be police on patrol in all areas at all times.”

HELENA PEREIRA feels pretty good about the province, her city and has no complaints. “Helen Zille and her team should keep doing what they are doing, because it’s definitely working. I am happy with my province and the progress.”

MICHELLE JONKER says the DA should create more outreach programmes in the rural areas.

“There should be more voluntary programmes that help uplift the housing conditions in the un­ derprivileged communities.”

RALTON WOODMAN is ecstatic that the DA has won again, but he has one problem. “I have noth­ ing against foreigners living in the Western Cape, but the foreigners that smuggle drugs and own prostitution businesses should be stopped.”

CARL WILLIAMS says the DA has made a lot of positive changes ever since they started leading the Western Cape. “The only thing I would like from the DA is to show more interest in sustaina­ ble development.”

A man linked to the 27s gang has been arrested for robbery. The arrest follows a shootout

with police on Friday near Town Centre in Mitchell’s Plain, authorities say.

ondale High School’s charge for a third consecutive Mr Price High Schools League title suffered a body blow at the weekend when a heavy loss to Cloetesville saw them tumble down the standings.

The defending champions went into the game atop the table and on the back of a 10-1 win against Oval North in their previous game, while Cloetesville lost their first game of the season and played to a goalless draw in their second match.

Though Cloetesville have won the title more times than Mondale (three times), the

Portland based school have been dominant in recent seasons and were expected to win.

Cloetesville clearly weren’t reading from the same script and banged in four goals to win 4-0.

The loss has seen Mondale drop to third and Cloetesville climb to fifth.

Only two sides in the tournament remain unbeaten after the third round of fixtures.

Beacon Hill High beat Westridge High 3-0, while Portlands beat Cedar 1-0.

Beacon Hill currently top the standings thanks to a superior goal difference.

Glendale High round out the top four after claiming their second win of the season by edging out Aloe High 1-0.

Slave Route run a success again T

he fourth annual Jive Slave Route Challenge set off with a bang on Sunday, as a miniature cannon blast sent over 5000 participants on their way in four different events.

The challenge, of which People’s Post is the print media sponsor, saw walkers and runners of all ages and ability levels participate in a half marathon, 10km run, 5km fun run or 10km walk in the CBD. But unlike most road races, the Slave Route Challenge was about the Cape’s culture, history and community and not just personal achievement and exercise.

The event took participants past some of the city’s most important historic landmarks and showed off it’s natural beauty from some of the best vantage points.

The route passed through District Six, BoKaap and other parts of the CBD, winding past the Iziko Slave Lodge, the Slave Tree Plaque and the Whipping Post.

Several historic churches and mosques are also dotted along the route, while participants also ran through the Castle of Good Hope.

All finishers received medals and all entrants received a coupon to visit the castle.

The race was hosted by Itheko Sport Athletic Club. The club saw a number of its runners finish on the podium.

In the men’s open division of the half marathon Sibusiso Madikizela (Manoni Running Club) claimed gold in a time of 1:07:18, Nedbank Running Club’s Mthandazo Qhina

Peter Tsawayo of RCS Gugulethu won the men’s open division in 31:42, while CPUT Athletics Club’s Sibusiso Soldaka finished in 31:49 to claim second and Itheko’s Duane Fortuin was third in 31:52.
