Corruption at housing office? LILLIAN AMOS

HANOVER Park residents are accusing the local housing office of corruption. One housing officer in particular is the main cause for their concern, and residents allege he moved his relatives into a vacant house in Galilee Walk without following the proper procedures. The house had been unoccupied since an elderly woman died in the house last year. The deceased did not have any beneficiaries and the house was left vacant. Locals say two people moved into the house on Friday 4 January and

residents were immediately alarmed. Several people living in the neighbourhood have been on the housing list for years and are living in backyard dwellings while waiting for a house to become available. Community worker Sofia Fritz says: “The community is very upset and they have reason to be. We personally went to this housing officer to ask him what will happen to the house. He explicitly said that no one will move into the house yet. That same night in the middle of the night two people moved in – one of whom we know is his nephew.” Fritz says the officer did not do his job properly and apparently ad-

mitted that the tenant was family. “There was a similar situation at another house in the area not too long ago and he called law enforcement; those people were out of that house within 24 hours. Why couldn’t he do the same with them? Because they are his family. He said, in front of me and several witnesses, that the man was his nephew and he had to look after his family,” Fritz alleges. Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, Ernest Sonnenberg, says the City of Cape Town is aware of the allegations by Hanover Park residents, but denies the nepotism claims. “City officials are not allowed to

make provision for their families and the City stands firmly against this kind of favouritism,” he says. The people currently living at the residence will have to move, Sonnenberg continues. “The residents have been informed that they do not qualify for the tenancy of the unit and are required to vacate the premises. Appropriate action is being taken to effect this,” he says. Aziza Cupido who lives in the area is livid and says she wants to “take the law into her own hands”. “I have been on the waiting list for over 20 years. I have six children and I am ill. I have to live in a bungalow while other people can just

come here and take what they want. What makes them so special? If those people were on the waiting list I would not mind them moving in there because then it would be fair – everyone waits their turn. But I can assure you that they are not on the waiting list,” she fumes. A resident, who does not want to be named, says: “We are not going to let this go. It is a total disgrace that people who have been waiting so long for a house must go on suffering. Corruption will not be tolerated and we as the community are going to fight this with all we have,” she says. Contact the City’s fraud hotline on 0800 32 31 30.
