Gang war in Phumlani Village RESIDENTS in Phumlani Village say they live in fear after several shooting incidents left five men dead. Grassy Park police station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Christian Esau says there have been shootings since the beginning of the month and all have been gang related. “Two people were shot in separate incidents and another three were shot last week Sunday in a drug turf war,” says Esau. Two of the victims shot on Sunday died on the scene while the third died in hospital later in the week. According to police, all of the men were targeted because they were allegedly involved in gangs.

“They were either in the Mongrel or the Six-bob gang. They were definitely not just innocent bystanders. It was not just random shooting incidents,” says the station commander. A task team from Steenberg police station have now stepped in to keep things under control. Grassy Park Community Policing Forum spokesperson, Phillip Bam, says violence has always been a problem in the area. “Phumlani Village is heavily congested and overcrowded, and gangsters have taken over properties and houses in the community. Obviously there will be a fight for turf.” Bam insists that visible policing is the answer to the surge in gang violence. “There needs to be a continually strong police presence in the community because that is the only way criminals will not have the

opportunity to take the upper hand,” he says. “I truly believe that would be the start to the solution”. A Phumlani Village woman who wishes to remain anonymous says there have been many shootings in the informal settlement, but adds that Sunday’s episode sent shock waves through the community. “There have been shootings almost every day. We live in fear because you never know when you have to run for your life. It’s become a gangsters’ paradise here and nothing is being done. It’s just getting worse.” Another resident known only as “Whitey” says he chooses to stay in his house because he fears for his life. “I’m not involved with gangsterism in anyway, but you can easily be killed in the cross fire or mistaken for a rival gang member. I don’t want to take that chance, so I’d rather

sit in my home, watching television the entire day. It’s not very exciting, but at least I know I’m safe.” Currently, Phumlani Village is just one of the areas riddled with gang-related shootings in the Western Cape. Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato admitted on Thursday that an intervention was urgently needed and has, in previous years, appealed to national government to help bring an end to gang-related violence in Cape Town’s suburbs. He says the department will try and assist police to stabilise the affected communities.
