Evictions on agenda The meeting, organised by Donovan van den Heyden, will be held at the Hangberg Community Sports Centre on at 18:45. Van den Heyden says eviction notices have been served “to those who have extended, erected (new), upgraded or renovated (their) informal structures”. This includes the five families affected by a recent fire disaster in Hangberg.
JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, confirms notices of the contravention of a court order were served by the Sheriff of the Court. The notices were served to those contravening the High Court Order that was made final in November 2011. Van den Heyden adds: “We are still trying to establish whether only residents who built in brick are affected at this stage, or whether all informal extensions are included” he says. The aim of the meeting is to engage the residents in a non-political discussion, including

discussions on how the children will be affected by the erection of new informal structures. It will further assess how many people are affected by the court notices and it is hoped a decision will be made on engaging with “our leaders and the City of Cape Town”. Van den Heyden appeals to all Hangberg residents to support this community engagement. “It is also not a platform to ‘target’ our local leaders, but an invitation to support each other and demand transparency and public par-
ticipation with regards to the City’s plan for the houses and flats they plan to build in Hangberg.” He says an interim task team was established by the residents at a public meeting in Hangberg: “It was tasked with taking the ‘negotiating or dialogue process’ forward, with guidance from Legal Resource Centre (LRC) lawyers. They are setting up a meeting for the Interim Task Team through the City’s lawyers, with the relevant official and local stakeholders – the Peace and Mediation Forum.”
