B

uying drugs is becoming as easy as ordering take-outs.

Drug users can now call a dealer, place an order and have their poison delivered to them in less than half an hour.

Dial-a-drug is understood to be common in the leafier parts of Athlone and other affluent areas in Cape Town.

Drug pushers are coining it by running an effective delivery service distributing mainly dagga and ecstasy, by car.

A drug user says this makes it easy to avoid being arrested.

“We know where the police do routine stop-and-searches. I have a dealer on speed dial. My friends and I use dial-a-drug all the time. We buy dagga and ecstasy. Smoking dagga everyday has become a norm for me,” says the 24-year-old woman from Surrey Estate.

She had heard about the effortless means of sale from friends.

Drug users say a drop-off point is arranged.

“We usually choose a public place. The dealer will get out of his car and deliver the drugs to me. He will often have a female passenger so as not to raise any alarm bells to the police. He may even drive around and deliver drugs with more than one passenger in the car,” she explains.

A man in his mid-20s says one can buy a “bankie of dagga for anything between R50 and R350”.

“It’s convenient to buy drugs in this way,” he says.

A 21-year-old woman from Lansdowne says many of her friends make use of dial-adrug.

“You will often find people doing deals in parking lots at malls or a petrol station.

“There is no delivery fee, provided you are in close proximity to where the drug pusher lives,” she says.

A well-known bakery in Belgravia has been identified as a drop-off point once the store shuts its doors.

SMOOTH EXCHANGE: Drug users can now order their poison with a call and have it delivered in under 30 minutes.

Athlone police spokesperson Constable Zita Norman says monitoring this trade is a lot more challenging than policing drug houses.

“With a drug house we can execute search warrants, but those operating the dial-adrug service are constantly changing their routes and where they deliver drugs to buy-

fection. “Deep down I knew what he was doing was wrong, but I was just a child and he was my daddy. He was my hero. Why would he do anything to hurt me?”

As the years progressed, so too did his advances, but with more aggression.

“I had my first period when I was 11 and this upset him – it’s like he never wanted me to grow up. The touching stopped soon thereafter. I could finally relax.”

The calm lasted a year. On a warm day in March, she was watching TV. Her dad lost his job and was at home.

“I was still wearing my school uniform.

He came into my room and asked about my day. Everything was normal.”

Melissa didn’t know that minutes later her life would change.

She heard him in the kitchen. “Out of nowhere he came bounding into my room and smacked me across the face. I was stunned.

He got on top of me and started choking me.

Then the blows rained down. I was crying, but it was like he didn’t realise what he was doing.”

Exhausted from fighting back, she felt him rip off her school pants. “I wept like a baby while he raped me. It felt like I was watching this happen to someone else.”

He left a tearful Melissa lying on the bed, wearing only her school shirt.

Terrified and writhing in pain, she screamed that she would tell her mother.

“I had never seen him so angry. He went to the kitchen and returned with a screwdriver.”

He asked her to repeat what she’d said.

“I did, then I felt the first stab to my throat.”

The last words she heard before he stabbed her 16 more times were: “Now you will never be able to say anything.”

In a semi-conscious state, Melissa lay in a pool of blood. “I rolled over and crawled towards the front gate, but only managed to make it out the front door. I heard people walking by, but couldn’t breathe or call out to them. All I made was gurgling sounds.”

A friend found her in the doorway and called her mother, who phoned for help.

She woke up two days later in ICU. Her father was the first person to visit.

“He said if I told anyone what had happened, he would finish what he had started.”

He had told her mother he wasn’t home at the time.

“My father told me to tell the police someone had broken in while I was home. He gave me specific details, like the man had been wearing a balaclava when he attacked me and I didn’t see his face. I was terrified and stuck to his story.”

At a check-up weeks later, she found she was pregnant. “Doctors told my parents they could have the baby aborted, but my father refused supposedly on moral grounds. My mother didn’t want to keep it, but he insisted.”

Melissa went into labour seven months later.

She was 12.

“Natural things like breastfeeding overwhelmed me. I was a child; I was supposed to be playing with dolls, not looking after a baby.”

Her mother took over the reins.

“She treated Janice like her own child. I was told from the beginning that this was now my sister; only a few people knew the truth. But that was what my parents wanted, and I had to accept it.”

Life went back to normal as the family “swept everything under the carpet”. “But things were never the same. I never felt comfortable at home. I wished school would last forever; it was my safe haven. I hated hearing the school bell ring – it meant I had to go.”

A year later, her father raped her again. “It became a regular thing; twice a month, when nobody was home. This time I didn’t fight back. KLIPFONTEIN ROAD: PAGAD REJECTS ANY TIES TO BOMB BLASTS

agad has vehemently denied any involvement in two explosions in the Athlone area.

A well-known car dealership in Klipfontein Road and a home in Taurus Road, Surrey Estate were targeted on Wednesday night.

Police have asked the Hawks to investigate the two explosions.

No one was injured in the blasts.

The modus operandi appears similar, but police are hesitant to say whether the two cases are related.

Velocity Cars in Klipfontein Road was hit by an explosion shortly after 21:00 on Wednesday night.

Residents say a loud bang was followed by what they believe to be gunshots.

Nine cars were damaged in the blast; two cars were written off.

The damage, subject to evaluation, is estimated at R600 000.

The explosions happened at the same time Pagad held a motorcade protest in the area.

Pagad spokesperson Cassiem Parker says police escorted the motorcade.

The convoy made its way to Bokmakierie where the anti-drug and anti-gang organisation engaged with the community about their challenges.

“The police was with Pagad on the motorcade on every route we took through the streets of Bokmakierie. The police can therefore verify and testify that those involved in the motorcade had nothing to do with the blasts. In the past the police were quick to link Pagad to incidents which they could never prove,” he says.

The senior had been in bed when she heard the rumble of blasts reverberate before a Pagad motorcade made its way through the area.

“Just five minutes after the blast, the Pagad motorcade drove past.

There were dozens of cars which were escorted by several police vehicles and a casper. The cars were hooting as they made their way down Klipfontein Road.”

He has been trading from the Klipfontein Road premises for eight years.

Jainoodien declined to issue comment.

Rezaan Karlie works at a fast food outlet just metres from the car dealership.

She confirms the bomb went off five minutes after the Pagad motorcade, escorted by police, made its way down the street.

“We all ran out as soon as we heard the commotion,” she says.

Athlone police spokesperson Constable Zita Norman says damage done to the front of the store appears to be bullet holes.

“On further investigation (it was found that) the glass door was damaged and had seven holes that appear to be bullet holes,” she says.

HEALTHCARE: FORMER RYLANDS DOCTOR IN TOP POST

he loves Cape Town so much that she never wants to leave, says the woman now at the helm of Groote Schuur Hospital.

Dr Bhavna Patel, a specialist in family medicine and public health, was appointed as CEO of the hospital, which turns 75 this year.

Patel heads the 3700-strong staff.

About 20 000 operations are performed in 25 theatres and 45 000 people are treated at the hospital each year.

It also has 200 clinics and 350 000 outpatients.

Provincial health minister Theuns Botha announced Patel’s appointment last week in the same old building and not far from where Professor Chris Barnard performed the first heart transplant on 3 De-

cember 1967.

“It is one thing to manage a hospital, but quite another to lead a world icon such as Groote Schuur. Dr Patel is absolutely suited for the position. One of the biggest challenges is to provide the best possible service for a growing population, with the same financial resources,” Botha says.

Patel says: “We still do heart, as well as kidney, lung and bone marrow transplants.”

The hospital has a budget of R1.8bn and Patel hopes to introduce more innovative technology and procedures, as well as to continue conducting research.

Patel was the hospital’s senior medical services manager for five years before becoming Groote Schuur’s chief operating officer in 2011.

“I was born and bred in Cape Town and have two children at high school,” she says.

ational protests are making a renewed call for tertiary studies to be made freely available.

If there was no cost to higher education, would it lead to more skilled workers or would it be a drain on the State coffers, especially if students fail?

People’s Post polled readers about this hotbutton topic.

KERWIN LIEDEMAN says if tertiary education is KERWIN free, the standard of secondary education has to be raised. “Free tertiary education is a good idea, but there would have to be strict admission standards and that means the level of high school education would also need to be improved.”

MICHAEL JANSEN JANSEN says the smart move would be to create more jobs instead of granting free tertiary education. “Free studies probably won’t work.

You’ll have a lot of people with the same qualifications – where will everyone work if there aren’t more jobs?” he asks.

PHUMLA MFUMBE MFUMBESI SI strongly supports this idea and says free tertiary education would be a blessing to cash-strapped youth. “I would love to study tourism but my parents are unable to pay for it.

I can’t afford it either. If higher education was free more people would be able to fulfil their dreams.”

DAMIAN KRIGE feels education should be available to anyone who is dedicated enough to make a success of their life. “If someone is willing to (study) they should be given the opportunity. Institutions should look at the person’s history to help them determine if they should qualify.”

ROCHELLE SHANNON believes many people would appreciate the opportunity as it can only help them succeed. “Even though I’ve been working for a long time, I would have liked to study further. There aren’t enough bursaries available and not everyone can afford it.”

CLIFF NDLELA says affordable tertiary education would be a better idea as people would have to pay back the money loaned to cover their fees.

“To help people be serious and dedicated they should refund the money once they start working.

This is a way of ensuring that people pass.”

NAT NATALIE ALIE DU T TOIT OIT feels such an initiative would be a move in the right direction. She believes tertiary education will help many who can only dream of an improved life as university fees are steep.

“There are so many talented people, but not all can get the jobs without the qualification.”

GATESVILLE: OLD STOCK FILLING SHELVES

hoppers at a popular stall in Athlone need to be more vigilant when picking items off the shelf.

Residents say the Housewife’s Paradise, located in Gatesville, has been fooling customers with sweets, spreads and other products with expired sell-by dates.

The assortment of spreads, instant soups, juices and beauty products are often sold at bulk sale prices, making the stall the first stop for those with a tight budget.

People’s Post visited the stall and found several products past their sell-by dates.

Mayonnaise, Miracle Whip, salad dressing and sweetener were some of the goods with expired dates, with the earliest in February 2012.

Health website www.eatbydate.com recommends mayonnaise and Miracle Whip not be kept for longer than a month past the sell by date if unopened and stored in a fridge.

“Mayonnaise, despite it’s high concentration of fat, is a tricky one – it can look fine, but make you very sick,” the website states.

However, the stall’s owner says his products pose no risk.

“We do sell some products that have passed the sell-by date, but we test them first to see that they are fit for human consumption,” owner Rashied Mahmood says.

Manager Junaid Roomney explains that any stock past the sell-by date is sampled by staff. If a product is found to be rancid, the batch will be taken off their shelves.

“If it’s not right, we don’t sell it,” he says.

Roomney says the business prefers to buy stock close to the expiry date, as to avoid buying stolen goods.

Mahmood explained that he has the community’s interests at heart, saying he funds several feeding schemes.

This is his first complaint, he claims.

“Nothing has happened in the 15 years we’ve been here. We’ve had no complaints.”

Mahmood says steps would be taken to ensure the products were taken off his shelves.

Athlone shopper Sheila Julie was horri-

fied by the idea of buying expired products.

“I’m a pensioner and like to take advantage of good specials, but it’s bad to sell products like that. They could be mouldy and make you sick,” she fumes.

Another shopper, who asked not to be named, said he had notice that sometimes even the sweets were past their sell-by date.

“And people wonder why their children get sick, never thinking it could be the sweets,” exclaimed the aggravated shopper.

The responsibility to check expiry dates

falls to the consumer, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee member for Health, Lungiswa James, says.

“Spot checks are carried out, but the City can’t do anything about sell-by dates. A shop is allowed to sell products past the sell-by date, but the shoppers must be informed that the products have expired.”

She says there is no bylaw governing sellby dates, although consumers are protected under the National Consumer Protection Act.

ATHLONE: SURVEY REVEALS RESIDENTS’ FEARS

ith crime on the rise, Grasmere Street residents are eager to see more visible policing in their neck of the woods.

Residents polled in recent door-to-door surveys by Fusion Youth, Community Development South Africa and the Independent Congregational Church South Africa had a chance to voice their main needs and concerns.

Research revealed that drug dealing, vandalism, house and vehicle break-ins as well as thieves stripping metal from properties are some of the burning issues plaguing the area.

Fusion SA chairperson Derrick Trout says it appears there has been an influx of unknown individuals prowling around, leaving Grasmere Street residents feeling threatened and panicked.

“There are many elderly residents who are too afraid to walk their streets for fear of being robbed or attacked,” he says.

Local children are seen enjoying the play parks during the day, but residents say older teens use their recreational facilities for all sorts of “suspicious activities” at night.

In response to the information gathered, Trout says it is clear that residents are desperate for Law Enforcement to take action.

Hoosain Salie has been living in Grasmere Road for nearly 35 years says he and his neighbours suspect a house in the street is a drug den.

“Police have raided the house twice, but nothing was found,” he says.

Salie believes some sort of formalised security system would be of benefit to the area.

Trout says the research team compiled a few recommendations to ensure the residents’ receive the protection they require.

“We are hoping to implement some sort of neighbourhood watch, but assistance needs to come from the residents themselves. We also want to get police on board to patrol more frequently,” he says.

Trout says they are looking to establish a facility in the area with the aim of bringing neighbours together, encouraging them to be more active in fighting crime.

The facility will provide various workshops, programmes and activities for all ages. “These things will not happen overnight but we have made a start by approaching the old Independent Congregational School in Grasmere Street as a venue. We are hoping to see our plans materialise by the beginning of next year,” Trout says.

Athlone police spokesperson Constable Zita Norman says despite their daily patrols in Grasmere, various incidents are taking place when police are not visible, placing the onus on residents to immediately report crime.

Norman says they acknowledge the residents’ concerns and fears but stressed that Athlone police needs their assistance to fight the crime scourge.

“The residents safety is our priority and we will definitely play a more active role in their neighbourhood now that we are aware of the situation,” she explains.

SAFETY: SOME SCHOOL TAXIS NOT ROADWORTHY

arents are in a panic about their children reaching school safely.

The focus of their worry is the brazen disregard drivers hired to safely transport their children to and from school have for traffic laws.

Residents of Heideveld, Welcome Estate and the surrounding areas take issue with the unsafe vehicles carrying precious cargo.

Abdoeraouf Lakay is a parent and chairperson of the Welcome Primary School governing body. He says there is mounting anxiety about the unroadworthy vehicles.

“The doors are falling off some of the taxis, the seats are loose and the cars and taxis are overloaded,” he says.

Many of these vehicles do not have fire extinguishers on board – a necessary compliance to operate as a public transport operator, Lakay continues.

“Many of these vehicles are clearly not roadworthy and definitely not suitable to transport anyone, never mind pupils,” he says.

Another distraught parent, Faiez Gamieldien, says after seeing the poor condition of a few vehicles transporting the children, he would never allow his two daughters to get in. “It’s not all the vehicles that are in a bad state, but some of them you can clearly see are very unsafe. I have even seen children hanging out of the windows and doors,” Gamieldien says.

Woodlands Primary principal Anthony Meyer says he understands that many parents are left with limited transport options in getting their children to school, but still finds it dismaying some parents still allow this. “We have sent notices to the parents

informing them of this serious matter. We asked them to request that the drivers present relevant licence and documentation,” Meyer explains.

He adds that many of these vehicles are not properly licensed or the drivers do not have a Professional Driving Permit.

Provincial minister for Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle says it imperative that any driver transporting passengers has a professional driver’s permit over and above their valid driver’s licence.

Carlisle says they continually urge parents to be proactive about their children’s school transportation as they are the ones who willingly pay private drivers for this service. “Parents must meet the driver and inspect the vehicle transporting their children to and from school. They need to be satisfied that those vehicles are safe and that the drivers are licensed and responsible,” he explains.

Parents asserting this right would be able to weed out operators only interested in a quick profit and not their children’s safety, Carlisle insists.

The City of Cape Town’s safety and security executive director Richard Bosman says the City’s traffic services embark on a weekly scholar operation throughout the municipality to diminish the risk.

“Negligent operators will face the full force of the law when it comes to the safety of their vehicles and the children they transport,” Bosman says.

He explains that vehicles transporting pupils must be fitted with a tracking device, have comfortable seating as well as safety requirements specific to the capacity of the vehicle – for example, if a driver carries seven children, then each child must have a seat and a safety belt

A

fter 90 years, her secret to feeling as young as she looks is that she doesn’t let her age run away with her, but she runs away from her age.

Eight children, 21 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren later, Doreen Meiring from Penlyn Estate says all she wants to do now is relax and enjoy her old age after raising all her grandchildren.

Ma Do, as she is affectionately known, celebrated her nine decades of memories yesterday (Monday).

Her family and friends have planned a high tea at the Wynberg Sports Club on 3 August to celebrate her milestone.

“I still can’t believe I’ve reached this age and I still feel like my old self,” Ma Do says with a smile.

Spending most of her days out on the stoep in the sunshine, she says there is nothing better than relaxing outside watching people get on with their day.

Even though she’s not as active as she once was, she says she’s still got what it takes. “I clean the house, do all my own washing and bath and dress myself.”

While growing up Ma Do says her father would make her and her brother go for a run at the Kenilworth Racecourse every Sunday morning as part of their workout routine.

“I was always very serious about exercise and keeping fit,” she says.

When she turned 17, at a time when most teenagers are completing schooling or focusing on future careers, she experienced love at first sight and without hesitation married her then boyfriend. “We were both very young but it was just something we wanted to do. It just felt right,” she explains.

The newlyweds started their journey together in Newlands and in that same year their first son was born.

Despite the hardships they had to endure, Ma Do gave birth to another seven children.

“My husband was an amputee as a result of gangrene and it was extremely tough for me to raise our kids and take care of the household all on my own,” she explains.

Battling with her own health in recent years, Ma Do has been in and out of hospital with a heart condition as well as high blood pressure.

She says that she never thought she would make it this far but her family, especially her grandchildren, have inspired her to keep going. “I am very proud of all my grandchildren’s achievements. Seeing them and having them around me makes me really happy,” Ma Do says.

She expresses sincere gratitude for one of her daughters who visits her each week to do her hair and iron her washing.

“My family really takes good care of me.”

Annette Forbes, one of Ma Do’s daughters with whom she shares a home, says she hopes that she too will reach that golden age one day. “I am truly grateful to still have my mother around. She is always there for me and my kids,” Forbes says.

“We have become quite close as both our husbands have already passed so we share each other’s burdens and joys.”

“Ma is such a loving and caring person.

All my children and grandchildren grew up in front of her,” Coert says.

housands of rands worth of illegal cigarettes are regularly transported across South African borders to the Western Cape and the Mother City.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa says this phenomenon is on the increase and they are stopping more and more people transporting illegal cigarettes on main routes. Last Thursday the provincial Traffic Department and the police seized 140 000 cigarettes with a street value of R160 000.

The man transporting the cigarettes was arrested.

“He was stopped and arrested at a road block about 5km outside Worcester. It was different cigarettes of different brands,” Africa said.

Transporting illicit cigarettes is on the rise in this province, he insisted.

“We are arresting more people for the possession of illegal cigarettes, mostly on our main routes – the N1, N2 and N7.”

The South African Tobacco Institute said in a statement the confiscated cigarettes includes Chicago and Manchester cigarettes.

According to the statement the trade in illicit cigarettes in the Western Cape has dramatically increased since 2010.

“Research by an independent agency found that 28% of the cigarettes sold in the province is illegal.”

It says many illicit cigarettes are transported here via Zimbabwe, while large numbers are also produced locally.

My son also did the classes with me and I think that inspired and motivated me a lot,” she says. “I don’t regret doing this at all and encourage anyone who is thinking about it to do it. It gives you a sense of achievement that money can’t buy.”

Her son Mogammed Alawie Darries (27), who took on the journey with his mother, says he simply wants to be able to get a good job.

He completed a four-year visual arts course at the College of Cape Town as well as a national senior certificate, however that certificate does not hold the same weight as a matric certificate. “I want to take my studies to a whole new level. Once I have my matric certificate I would like to perhaps do a course in photography or IT,” he says.

Ernest Yon (55) is from Belgravia. He also completed his matric certificate last month and says it really was hard work but knows it will all be worth it.

Yon feels it was quite a challenge to go to work during the day and then attend classes at night, but what motivated him was wanting to land a permanent position at his current workplace which he cannot do without a matric certificate.

“Studying after so many years was tough but if you have the time then you should definitely consider doing it. Knowledge is power and I expect a lot of doors to open for me now,” Ernest says.

lderly residents who did not have the chance to complete their schooling while growing up have hauled out their school books and bags and seized the opportunity to complete their matric certificate at the Community Learning Centre of Bridgetown.

Centre manager Ismail Ceres is encouraging anyone who is eager to obtain their matric senior certificate to take the plunge despite being out of school for many years.

“It is important for any individual to have a matric certificate to apply for any sort of employment or to further their studies,” Ceres explains.

He says that the centre has been operating successfully for nearly 13 years, seeing thousands of candidates of various ages pass through their doors.

Each year, the centre accommodates about 70 candidates; the common age group ranges from 21 to 42 years.

Candidates are expected to attend classes three nights a week – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 17:45 until 20:30.

Classes run from August until April, with examinations for the senior certificate taking place in May/June each year.

The candidates of 2013/2014 have recently completed their examinations and are anxious for their results.

Maymoena Darries (61) says when she grew up in the ‘60s, you were expected to leave school and find work when you reached Standard 8.

“In Standard 8 we obtained a certificate that allowed you to hold down a good job.

Times were tough and we needed to help provide for our families,” she says.

But now that Maymoena is married and her children are all grown up, she felt like

Making sense of mental illness

iving with a mental illness is trying and traumatising for most people. But adequate resources would go some way to helping.

With July being Psychiatric Disability Awareness Month, Cape Mental Health and the Cape Consumer Advocacy Body are campaigning for better resource allocation to public mental health services.

There appears to be a rising number of people with mental illnesses, Cape Mental Health spokesperson Maleeka Mokallik says.

In South Africa, substance abuse and HIV/Aids cause various mental health problems, including depression and dementia, which add to the mental health burden.

“A 2008 study by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Unit of the Medical Research Council found that the majority of people who have been admitted had a substance-induced psychotic disorder, which far outweighed those admitted for schizophrenia disorders and bipolar mood disorders,” Mokallik says.

“Only 4% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health and in Cape Town there are only 1682 beds between four psychiatric hospitals.”

The plight of woefully inadequate resources was recently taken to the streets of Cape Town.

Complaints include too few beds in State hospitals, day hospital dispensaries not always stocked with medication on collection days, and

therapy not always being available on request.

Others spoke of the difficulties to get jobs and not disclosing their mental illness for fear of not being employed.

Misdiagnosed One such person is former teacher and mother of two, Vanessa, who was eventually correctly diagnosed with apsychotic bipolar mixed mood disorder.

“My condition was misdiagnosed and for 16 years I was using the wrong medication, which aggravated my mental condition,” she says. “Whenever I spoke to my psychiatrist about my uncertainties towards my condition, he’d say I was imagining it. By accident the hospital changed by medication after they saw I was functioning better on lighter dosages. They were able to pin down my condition and diagnosed me with apsychotic bipolar mixed mood.”

This means Vanessa experiences depression, agitation and anxiety simultaneously. “My illness came to the fore after I had my children and experienced severe post-natal depression, which went unnoticed, because of my sense of guilt towards them.”

She saw psychologists and psychiatrists 18 years ago after her first episode, but resisted using the medication they prescribed. “Seven years ago I made peace with my illness when I recognised the symptoms before major episodes presented.”

Her marriage suffered as a result. “My ex-husband stopped pay-

ing my medical aid, which forced me to access the State health system.”

She received “excellent help and had no problems with obtaining medication, but battled finding psychologists and psychotheraphy, because the system does not readily provide that”.

Stigmatised For Cape Consumer Advocacy Body chairperson Oscar January, who has a rare form of schizophrenia, difficulties set in at an earlier stage. “I always thought I was just going through the motions of puberty and growing up. I was constantly confused and paranoid, struggling to walk away from arguments, and I never shared the same reaction to situations as others did,” he says. “I’d often freeze up with vacant eyes and not know what’s happening around me.”

He knew something was wrong and, at 19, a health professional told Oscar he had had a nervous breakdown – “of which I was unaware” – and was later diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“My time at Groote Schuur Hospital is a blur; I felt like I was there for two days, (but) it was two weeks before I was transferred to Valkenberg Hospital where I underwent electroconvulsive therapy.”

He has been fortunate, he says, “because my family was very supportive from the start, but I’ve met many people whose families disown them because they don’t know how to handle their situations”.

Through stigma, January has lost many friends. “People place

Topic is taboo He says mentally ill people experience great difficulty when trying to find work.

“So many of our members have qualifications and are unemployed. The employment equity quota states that 5% of staff should be disabled. This figure needs to include mentally ill people, which is not the case at the moment. This stems from a lack of awareness and services, and because the topic is taboo.”

January, too, has been at the receiving end of inadequate resources in the State healthcare system.

“I am on anti-psychotic medication, which I have to take every evening before bed. One day I collected my medication from the day hospital and the dispensary never had my medication in stock. The pharmacist gave me substitute medication which had severe sideeffects.”

He suffered contact jitters and excessive sweating. “Functioning during the day was a serious issue and I only got better when I went back on to my usual medication.”

Provincial health spokesperson Faiza Steyn says pharmacy services checked recent out-of-stock records and there were no serious shortages to psychiatric agents.

non-profit organisation is fighting gangsterism and drugs abuse, not by targeting children, but by teaching their parents.

The Proud2B Me programme, run by the Proud2B Foundation, focuses on developing parenting skills to create a support system for children and developing communities.

“Communities are often dysfunctional and people have lost touch with taking responsibility,” says Nadia Thonnard, the manager of the Salt River-based organisation. “Parents often transfer their responsibility to teachers. This has a huge impact on children. They feel they aren’t being heard and engage in damaging behaviour such as gangsterism or drug addiction.”

But the parenting skills workshops offered by Proud2B aim to change that.

After years of research, Proud2B compiled a course designed to engage children, teachers and parents.

“If we want to strengthen our families, communities and schools, we need to look at guiding the positive transformation of families, communities and schools and not just the individual. The Proud2B Me programme therefore teaches families and communities to speak the same language of positive change. The evidence we have experienced is that families and communities grow together because they talk together,” she says.

Social worker Letichia Swartz completed

the course last year and enthuses about the immediate changes in her home.

“It’s had a fantastic impact on my life. I now believe that everything starts with me,” she says. “My children respond differently to me now.”

Swartz says not only has her family life improved, but her professional relationships with the community has progressed.

“I’ve got a powerful tool to measure parenting skills now and to see if families are healthy,” she says.

The course aims to help parents and children reconnect in a positive way, through teaching parents about their role and responsibilities, self-esteem and affirmation at home, effective communication, values and discipline.

Although the focus is on teaching parenting skills, Proud2B runs a variety of courses. These include building sound marriages, teen pregnancy and surviving rape.

They also work with children who are the prime caregiver to siblings.

The organisation recently worked with the Ark City of Refuge, a faith-based NPO and shelter.

Coordinator Tricia Bailey is amazed at the course’s impact. “Of all the courses we’ve offered, this has had the most impact.

Many of the women and children here are victims of abuse. All the participants found it to be very helpful – not only were they able to discuss their concerns in a safe environment, but they were also given practical skills and encouragement. We’ll use Proud2B again and again,” she says.

Slap (un)happy

If you’re of the parenting persuasion that subscribes to the back-hand brand of justice, you will want to rethink your options.

A new spanking law aims to put paid to the slap happy disciplining generations of South Africans grew up with.

And, many will argue, are today the better for it.

If approved, parents will no longer be able to apply the discipline, literally, at hand. You won’t be able to give your child that palmed anti-back-chat five-fingered countering. In short, if you hit your child, you’ll be breaking the law. The new law is reportedly being drafted to make it illegal for parents to spank their children at home.

Social Development minister Bathabile Dlamini told a newspaper that if a “husband beats a wife, it is a crime, but if a parent hits a child who is helpless, it is not illegal”.

The minister has reportedly said parents should take responsibility and should raise their children with proper values, to ensure they “don’t end up killing your own children”.

Since 2006 corporal punishment has been outlawed in schools. Teachers can not in any way hit a child to discipline them. There were, admittedly, many cases of school children bearing the brunt of teachers’ frustrations administered through a caning or other forms of humiliations. And children remain one of the vulnerable groups in society. They deserve to be protected and nurtured.

This new law will doubtlessly have distinct camps: those in favour and those who will scoff at the anti-spanking as a form of discipline.

The anti-spanking camp will likely say many parents hit children in anger. Those in favour of spanking may rebut saying children respond only to the threat of a stick.

Whichever camp you’re in will become moot if the new law is approved.

Under the draft law, parents would reportedly be charged with assault if, at home, they used a flat hand on a child’s bottom or enacted other forms of corporal punishment.

Unconditional love theory is drivel I have always considered an education without common sense, partial.

Dr EV Rapiti (“No point in judging others”, People’s Post, 23 July) should know I paid my dues by working nearly a decade in the welfare section at the Muslim Judicial Council. I helped countless addicts while many more rejected help. Although I earned less than a municipal cleaner, I often referred addicts for whom I found sponsors.

Gaseep Jacobs, founder of Lighthouse Rehab Centre, and the old staff of Toevlug Rehab Centre in Worcester will attest to my pioneering efforts in the early 1990s.

It is sad that Rapiti’s critique is emotive yet lacks a rational result to the addict’s criminal activity.

In other media Rapiti accuses MEC Albert Fritz of a “lack of knowledge”, and rubbishes the City of Cape Town’s Matrix programme that is globally accepted. All this umbrage suggests Rapiti is fixated on his own limited opinion. He forgets locals face several other critical issues such as serious crime, job loss, poverty, lack of service delivery and racism. Hence his “unconditional love” mantra for addicts is in short supply.

Since many of us have relatives who are addicts, I have had countless cherished items stolen. This was the addict’s response to my unconditional love when I invited them to family gatherings at my home.

Though I agree with Rapiti that only a willing addict can be helped, does he expect the public to wait for the “addict to become totally fed-up with addiction”? In the meantime, should society endure the chaos because addicts have a “disease”? Is this notion of a disease encouraged so that some can make easy money out of distraught parents

and from taxpayer funding?

That the taxpayer already spends billions on addiction, contradicts Rapiti’s view that “addicts do not have a choice”. What about the multiple media campaigns and the many public rallies?

Addiction is in the primary school curriculum and warning signs are everywhere. Is the monitoring of expected criminal behaviour really that “callous”? Why should everyone suffer because addicts lack restraint?

Rapiti should consider why addicts are reluctant to control their actions and strive for chaos. Since addicts produce mentally challenged children, this budget has rocketed to R895m which is about 5.5% of the Western Cape education budget. Is this fair on the children and the taxpayers?

I believe the availability of cheap mind-altering drugs is part of a sinister project to ensure locals remain engaged with conflict.

When we are engaged with self-destruction we cannot muster meaningful political, economic or spiritual strength. Why else are drug houses allowed to flourish?

Criminalising those who generate destruction will be better for society in the long term. With the growing addiction statistics, Cape Town will in time reach a point of no return. This will arise when this generation of (mentally unstable addicts) reproduce and outnumber the rest of us.

Finally, what is the purpose of law if not to judge criminals? In my view, fear of real captivity would be a greater deterrent than unconditional love. Let us not misplace our compassion and altruism. Let society show mercy to the victims and future generations who depend on us to do what is required.

Doctor’s words on addiction gives hope I want to thank Dr EV Rapiti for the letter “No point in judging addicts” (People’s Post, 23 July). Reading your letter gave me hope, but not for myself.

I have a brother who is 34 years old. He has been an addict for many years. In the beginning of the year he became fed-up and came home, with only the clothes he had on.

He lost everything, including his ID. We, as a family, did not judge him. Instead we took him back and gave him the support

and love to help him fight this battle.

He won and took it step by step with the help of our minister. With fatherly love and support he is still going strong. It left him with a scar for life. He has a breathing problem and coughs continuously.

Please advise where I can take him to get a proper lung examination. If they hear you have been an addict, so many people change towards you.

y motto is: I am drums.”

So says young drummer Chaswin Adonis, who drums under the stage name Riley Rei. “I’ve always loved creating beats,” Riley says. “I see drumming as a sport.”

Riley also believes in the power of music for upliftment, which is why he teaches drumming to children from underprivileged backgrounds and is involved in youth orientated programmes.

Riley is originally from Mitchell’s Plain, but moved to Athlone where he met a friend who taught him basic drumming.

From there, Riley practised hard until he was good enough to play on stage with some of SA’s biggest music names like Jimmy Dludlu and Jimmy Nevis. “I always wanted to go big with my drumming,” Riley says.

He started making a list of song he liked and last year he started performing his drum covers everywhere from coffee shops to churches.

He plays with a backtrack, drumming over the song.

His drumming has even seen Riley appear on TV shows, specifically Hectic-9 and Cape Town TV’s Taxi Vision with Soli Philander.

Masters to get swinging in Pinelands LIAM MOSES

T

he organisers of the 2013 South African Master’s Softball Championship have promised good softball and a fun atmosphere when the tournament takes place.

Falcons Masters Softball Club will host the tournament this year, with the Old Mutual Sports Complex and neighbouring Oude Molen High School in Pinelands as the venues.

Maureen Jangle, former president of Western Province Softball and chairperson of the local organising committee, says the Championship will feature teams from across SA. “Although this is serious, it’s also fun. You can enter as a club or as a province. We (will be hosting) provincial and club teams from Border, KwaZulu Natal and all over,” she says.

“Falcons have participated in the tournament for the last five years and they have won and been unbeaten in the last three. The tournament is allocated to a different province each year and they offered it Falcons this year.”

The master’s division is for any player over the age of 35 and the tournament have men’s and women’s competitions.

Apart from Falcons, the other Cape Town clubs who have entered teams this year are

Glenthorne Athletics, Pirates, Old Mutual Cubs and Hamiltons.

Jangle says Falcons decided to host the tournament in Pinelands because Turfhall Sports Complex, the location Cape Town’s only softball stadium, is currently being used for football fixtures. The venue also has the required space and facilities, such as a clubhouse.

Falcons have had to fund the tournament themselves and have been hard at work securing sponsors.

“Old Mutual and Oude Molen let us have the fields free of charge, but we will make a donation to the school,” says Jangle.

“Every player has to pay to participate, while the rest of the money will come from sponsorships.”

She adds sponsors for the diamonds (pitches), while more funding will be secured through selling the rights for food and softball equipment stalls at the venue.

Any profit made from the tournament will be ploughed back to the hosts to cover travel and accommodation costs of future master’s tournaments.

The tournament’s main sponsor is Sabelco, while the confirmed diamond sponsors are Trade Supplies, Vitamin Water and The Hollow Tree Pub. Entry to the tournament will be free. For more information or to sponsor phone Malcolm Jenner on 076 765 5830.

GOLDEN GIRLS AND GUYS: The South African blind bowls team returned from the International Blind Bowls Association World Championships with six gold and three silver medals. The tournament was held in Worthington, England in July. SA took gold in the B1 (blind), B3 and B4 (partially sighted) pairs and silver in the B2 (partially sighted) events. Herman Scholtz and Gwen Nel won silver in the men’s B3 singles and women’s B2 singles respectively. While Tracy Smith, May Homer and Princess Schroeder won gold in the B1, B3 and B4 women’s singles, respectively.

Rocklands slip up, Mondale pull clear LIAM MOSES Rocklands High School lost ground in the Mr Price High School’s League title race after a goalless draw against Glendale High on Saturday.

The young Rocklands team have looked like title contenders all season and went into the game second on the table, trailing log-leaders and perennial favourites Mondale by just two points.

But despite dropping points and slipping to third, coach Irafaan Abrahams believes Rocklands can still claim their first title.

“As long as we still have to play Mondale the season isn’t over. That game is going to be the turning point,” he says.

“We will never give up; they know that. Karate kid crowned world champ LIAM MOSES A young Zeekoevlei karateka has made history by becoming the first South African to win a World Karate Federation (WKF) junior event.

Schean Marais (13) won a gold medal in the heavyweight kumite at the WKF Youth World Cup in Corfu, Greece earlier this month.

Marais says he went into the tournament expecting to fail, but built up confidence with each fight he won.

“The first fight was against someone from SA, but I had already beaten him in SA so I didn’t really think much of the victory. I started getting more confident after I won the other fights,” he says.

In the final, the Constantia Waldorf pupil faced an opponent from Russia – a karate superpower ranked seventh in the world.

“It was three-all with one second to go in the final, but I had more warnings so if it ended in a draw the referees would have voted for him. I thought I was going to lose, but I didn’t want to. I knew I had to win. He came in with a kick, but I punched him and won,” says Marais.

The newly crowned world champion has been practising karate since the age of seven and has shown heaps of talent and determination since taking up the sport.

Marais trains every day of the week, except Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Sensei Dylan Hammargren, owner of the Lakeside Samurai Dojo, describes his protege’s victory is an “incredible achievement”.

“He is the only South African who has ever won a gold medal at a WKF junior event.

SA had a team of 30 people at the tournament and almost everyone lost their first fight,” he says.

“The competition level is very high. SA doesn’t do well at WKF internationals. When you are competing against countries that take karate a lot more seriously, it’s very difficult. Our athletes don’t get as much expo-

Police RFC fire late against Delft LIAM MOSES

P

olice RFC thrashed Delft at home in Pinelands to notch up their 10th victory of the season on Saturday.

Police are one of the surprise packages in Division Four this season and could finish as high as second on the table if their winning form continues.

Conversely, Delft has been disappointing and went into the encounter with the highest total of points conceded this year (411).

The match stayed true to the form book, with Police dominating the early exchanges and opening the scoring within five minutes through a penalty from scrumhalf Eugene Ferreira.

Police scored the first of five tries in the 16th minute, when Michael Bruintjies charged down a clearance kick in the opposition half and collected the ball to score in the corner.

The home side stretched the lead again just eight minutes later, when flank Khanayile Mfadu received the ball in the 22 and powered his way over the try-line, despite the attentions of two Delft defenders.

Delft were shocked into action after the second try and scored two of their own within eight minutes, either side of a penalty from Police flyhalf Francois Germishuys in the 34th minute.

Inside centre Sean van Wyk grabbed his side’s first score, bouncing off two tackles before racing clear to score under posts, before flank Patrick Jansen showed similar explosiveness and crashed through two opposition defenders on the try-line.

The away sided seemed to be staging a

comeback and were the more dominant team when the second half started, with Police leading 16-14.

Delft made several incursions into opposition territory, but handling errors and poor decision making meant the visitors couldn’t take advantage despite looking dangerous.

Flyhalf Delano September missed penalties in the 45th and 47th minutes before scoring the second half’s first points with a penalty in the 61th.

However, that was where the fight-back ended and Police went on to score three more tries in the final quarter thanks to well-timed substitutions.

Rudolph Killmott was the first sub to make an impact, picking up from the base of a ruck on the Delft try-line and diving low to dot down next to the feet of a defender in the 28th minute.

Replacement wing Francois Koen left the Delft defence for dead in the 35th minute, racing down the right touchline to score untouched.

Killmott jabbed the final dagger into Delft’s heart in the 38th minute, slipping through a gap, after Fabian Jacobs picked up from scrum, drove into two defenders and off-loaded to his fellow replacement. Ferreira goaled all three conversion attempts to help his side to a 37-15 victory.

Police have just three games left this season – against Progress, Cities and Titans – and are favourites to pick up wins in all three.

Meanwhile, Delft will face second-placed Bishop Lavis, log leaders Khayelitsha and fifth-placed Young Brothers in their last three games.

“Karate is his number one sport. He is a talented soccer player as well; he played for Santos but he’s had to stop that,” says Hammargren.

“A lot of youngsters may be talented, but without absolute dedication they are not successful. You have to train every day, you have to be in the gym every day and you have to watch what you eat.”

Marais shares his sensei’s dream of lifting gold again next year.

New broom aims for PSL promotion LIAM MOSES

antos will win the National First Division (NFD) and gain promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this year, if they can find the right mentality.

That is the belief of former People’s Team striker David Notoane, who was appointed head coach earlier this month.

Notoane took over from Ian Palmer, who joined at the halfway mark of the 2012/2013 season and lead the club to second place on the table and a spot in the promotion/relegation play-offs.

“A mental shift is a big necessity. We came from the PSL and, in the beginning, we still did things and played as a PSL team,” says Notoane.

“We are going into the second season in the NFD so the reality is that we are an NFD team, even though – in terms of history and quality – we are a PSL team. We have to approach things as an NFD team. We have to work as hard as we can and slog it out to get into the PSL. The thinking of Santos as a PSL team needs to change and the players need to understand that.”

Santos got off to a poor start last season and although the team improved vastly after Palmer’s appointment, inconsistency still played a major role in the failure to bounce back to the PSL. The Lansdowne based club won 13 games, drew 10 and lost five.

al friendlies, with the aim of building on the improved performances in the second half of last season.

Notoane says they are attempting to sign a forward and left and right midfielders, after Jonathan Armogam and Graham King’s contracts expired.

While the quality of Santos’ signings will be under scrutiny, the new mentor believes a “winning mentality” is more important to helping his side develop the consistency needed to win the title this season.

“We have the quality and we have the right balance between experience and youth to challenge for honours,” he says.

“I am working very hard to bring the best out of the players. Even the young boys have great ability. We just have to turn it on and play with a certain degree of self-expression within the culture of developing a winning mentality and attitude.”

The fixtures for the NFD season have not been released as yet, but Notoane hopes to get off to a “good start” regardless of who they face.
