Moving to the the beat

The Hlangani traditional marimba band will be one of the nearly 20 local groups performing at the Cape Town Buskers Festival at the V&A Waterfront tomorrow and Thursday. Four international buskers will also perform: Victor Rubilar (from Argenti­ na), Shandy South (United Kingdom), Sharon Mahoney (Canada) and Thelmo Parole (Spain). They will showcase skills ranging from mime and improvisational stand­up comedy, to freestyle soccer and anarchic poetry. In addition to being a celebration of the art of busking, the festival also brings experi­ enced and up­and­coming buskers together to share their skills and develop busking in South Africa through a series of workshops.

he City of Cape Town is seeking international recognition for the Mother City as a leading city protecting its wetlands.

It was revealed at a recent subcouncil 19 meeting that City officials have applied to have Cape Town accredited through the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, an international treaty promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands.

South Africa became a signatory to this convention in 1971 and in 2015 the City-owned False Bay Nature Reserve was declared a Ramsar site, one of seven in the Western Cape and 23 in South Africa.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, says: “Ramsar City status is not focused on individual wetlands or sites, but instead seeks to recognise efforts relating to the wise management of wetlands at the city-wide scale. In Cape Town, our wetlands are governed primarily by the National Water

Act. This legislation seeks to achieve a balance between use and protection of water resources to achieve sustainable development and equitable access to resources for all residents. Protecting priority wetlands and mitigating or offsetting impacts to maintain overall functionality are key aspects of wetland management.”

The City has implemented several projects relating to wetland management, protection and rehabilitation, Herron says.

“One of the most famous is the Kader Asmal integrated river catchment project, established in honour of the late Prof Kader Asmal under whose leadership the national Working for Water programme and National Water Act was developed,” he explains.

This project has focused on cleaning and improving the condition of rivers and wetlands by controlling invasive plants and removing litter, resulting in improved ecological condition, aesthetics and water quality of many of the city’s waterways, Herron says. The programme has also resulted in thousands of jobs.

“If the City nomination is accepted, it would obtain national and international recognition for its work in the management, wise use, sustainable development, environmental education and awareness raising of wetlands,” Herron adds.

assion to Serve, a non-government organisation in Retreat, is doing its bit to help youth gain skills and access paid employment opportunities.

Started by Malcolm Salida from Simon’s Town about two years ago, the organisation is hitting the right notes and helping youth, mostly in disadvantaged communities. Word on the organisation is spreading like wildfire.

They are working with youth between the ages of 18 and 34 from areas like Lavender Hill, Grassy Park, Heathfield, Steenberg and

Salida, who has years of experience working with NGOs, says what he noticed over the years is that there are many organisations that provide skills development but are not able to address the issue of unemployment.

“There is nothing wrong with that. They get the skill and then what’s next? But one has to go a step further. Yes, these people might have skills, but what then do we do to make sure that they are gainfully employed? I decided to take a stronger route of making sure that the unemployed youth are trained and get paid for what they do. We are therefore helping these youth with paid employment oppor-

tunities,” he says.

Steep climb on local’s road to blindness TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

A

rmed with a cane, notepad and a pen, a mother of four from Hout Bay is not letting anything stand in her way of living life to the fullest.

Michele Macfarlane has an inherited retinal disorder (IRD), retinitis pigmentosa.

She has only 7% vision left but is determined to tick off as many of the items on her bucket list as possible before losing her sight completely.

She is also the author of I left my husband for the au pair and a blogger. She is also writing to raise awareness for Retina SA and is a member of the organisation’s Western Cape branch.

Like most people living with threatening diseases, Macfarlane has a list of things she wants to see before she becomes blind.

“This month on my bucket list was the Venda Sacred Walk led by clinical psychologist and conservationist Jeffrey Rink. I waited for six years for this walk and when I heard that it was being organised I just had to do it,” she says.

Though this retreat is not designed for people with disabilities, Macfarlane told herself that she would do it and finish it.

“Whatever my fears, armed with blind courage, my cane and my notebook, I told myself I’m going to Venda, where I will write and record every step of the journey.

It was such a beautiful walk. I really love Venda; the people are warm, amazing, creative and beautiful. I told myself that I would walk patiently. I had to step and follow where someone in front of me was stepping.

I knew if I did that I would be safe,” she says.

“It was such an emotional walk. In other areas there was no electricity and it was so steep. Others wanted to quit but I’m glad that by being there, I gave them strength and courage. If I could do it and I can’t even see properly, they didn’t have to quit. We learned a lot and I’m glad that I have ticked one box on my list,” says Macfarlane.

She is one of millions of people around the world who are losing their vision to genetic forms of retinal vision loss.

World Retina Week is observed from 19 to 25 September annually to create awareness about IRD and the progress of finding a cure. Research in the fields of gene replacement, stem cell therapy, pharmaceutical interventions, optogenetics and gene editing offer hope for imminent treatment.

At present all DNA tests are done overseas at great expense and with long delays, using sophisticated next-generation sequencing. Retina SA wants to raise R1m to establish an IRD diagnostic panel at the division of Human Genetics at UCT. This would speed up the hunt, reduce costs and find the elusive gene mutations unique to South African indigenous populations. Retina SA also needs public support to pay for genetic testing of young patients.

Claudette Medefindt, science head of Retina SA, says: “The gene hunters at UCT have produced world-class research over many years and are uniquely equipped to hunt for the genetic mutations in patients affected by retinitis pigmentosa, macular dystrophies and degenerations, Usher syndrome, Leber congenital amaurosis and dozens of other rare and serious retinal disorders.

“These conditions affect more than 20 000 South Africans from all races and socioeconomic groups and finding the gene mutation in each family is the first step to therapy.

“Alarmingly, researchers estimate that 10m South Africans carry a single copy of a genetic mutation for one of the recessive forms of IRD – the most common form that usually occurs in families with no previous history of blindness.”

Retina SA is also looking for people with IRD to join them because they will be launching a clinical trial soon.

he preliminary round of Vangate Mall’s Sweet Sensations competition took place on Saturday.

Five finalists were selected from the almost 20 confections which were presented to the judges, namely Ayesha Laatoe of Voice of the Cape, Richard Almendro of Vangate Mall’s SuperSpar and People’s Post’s Earl Haupt.

Mahjabeen Khan, Aziza Ballim, Riedwaan Khan, Faldela Parker and Haseena Ahmed’s creations were chosen to take part in a live bake-off on Saturday 28 October, also at Vangate Mall.

The judges were treated to desserts such as mini strawberry cheesecake, decadent chocolate tart, strawberry daiquiri, fruit boat, chocolate pavlova, panna cotta with strawberry coulis, salted caramel cheesecake and an assortment of chocolate-based cakes. Walking on glass to break record NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

local magician will be walking 32km in 29 hours – barefoot on a bed of broken glass – in aid of the Nosh for Josh Foundation based in Claremont.

Russel Fox “Magician Insane”, brand ambassador for Nosh for Josh, will aim to set a Guinness World Record in this glass walker challenge to take place at the V&A Waterfront on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 November.

The challenge in aid of Nosh for Josh, in partnership with Afrosapien Entertainment, was announced at a media launch at the Protea Hotel Fire and Ice in the CBD on Wednesday.

This foundation was started to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorders, foetal alcohol syndrome and muscular dystrophy and help disadvantaged patients get the help they deserve by sending them for a stem cell therapy operation at the NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute in India. According to the foundation the operation costs R150 000 per patient.

Fox says with the challenge he hopes to break the world record and get his name in the Guinness Book of Records.

He says he decided to take the risk because he can relate to the challenges faced by children living with neurologic disorders in South Africa and would like to support the causes the foundation stands for.

Fox says he made a commitment to be part of the campaign because he understands the difficulties parents and children affected by these types of disorders go through.

With the record-breaking attempt he wants to form a big family, regardless of different backgrounds.

He was diagnosed with mental health issues and was declared uneducable as a child.

“My mother was alone and dealt with my condition on her own. It was not easy and the moment I learnt what was happening with me, I told myself I would use my unique ability to change lives and do the impossible.

Since then I worked hard and broke the stereotypes against my disorder. Here I am today, doing the best I can to give others a

chance to overcome their battles and live their lives to the fullest,” says Fox. He says though the challenge has been launched he wouldn’t say he is ready and will put his faith in God because “there are too many health risks involved, I will not be doing this on my own and it will not be for my benefit”.

Sandy Pekeur-Sandy, founder of the foundation, says the campaign is one of their attempts to raise funds to help achieve their goals. The foundation has grown to not just raising awareness but also making sure the patients receive operations, support centres are established, an academy for autistic children is established and bursaries are made available. She is calling on members of the public to support the record attempt in November. The launch was also attended by Chris Hunsinger, a member of parliament, Melika Razavi, Miss Power Women 2017, Miss Global Fitness 2016 and Miss Global Iran, and Dr Shaun Pekeur, Management College of Southern Africa.

ou can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind,” Mahatma Gandhi once said.

His words come close to describing prisoners who are doing great things and letting their imaginations run wild and their minds think like they are outside prison.

Their work will be auctioned by Stephan Welz & Co in Constantia from Tuesday 10 October as part of a project to fund the planting of 1m orchids in the Western Cape over the next 20 to 30 years Artworks by prisoners will be going under the hammer at an estimated price of R15 000 to R22 000 for the group.

Proceeds from the auction of 11 artworks by the inmates of Drakenstein prison and 34 other lots will be donated to the Cape Orchid Society’s diamond jubilee legacy project, which aims to stop the decline in the Western Cape’s orchid population.

“The works are inspired by the beauty of orchids and are extraordinary and deeply moving,” says auctioneer Sophie-Louise Fröhlich.

The prisoners are members of a visual arts project being undertaken as a form of transformative therapy at Drakenstein Correctional Centre.

The Cape Orchid Society commissioned the prisoners to produce graphic orchidthemed images on Fabriano Rosipina paper, and 13 of their works have been on exhibition in Cape Town, with two already sold.

Many orchid species have been lost forever or are threatened with extinction as a result of overly frequent burning of habitats, urbanisation, poor agricultural practices and infesting alien vegetation.

Prisoners made orchid­themed images that will be auctioned in Constantia next week to raise funds to plant more orchids in the province.

Three-quarters, or 1700 species, of all plants on the South African red list of threatened species are in the Cape floral region. Of these, 70 are orchid species, says the Cape Orchid Society.

The works and other donated paintings and ceramics will be offered in a special session under the theme “Orchids and art”.

Among other stand-out items in this charity auction is a pair of orchid-shaped 18K gold and diamond earrings by Prins and Prins with an estimated price of R30 000 to R50 000. The auction will include numerous jewellery pieces in a wide range of prices.

stones feature in a tanzanite and diamond neckpiece will be offered at an estimated price of R220 000 to R320 000. An 18K white gold designer necklace with matching earrings with an estimated price of R120 000 to R150 000 includes a central pendant of about 77 pavé-set diamonds. A diamond necklace and earring set with an estimated price of R32 500 to R52 500 features an 18K white gold claw-set diamond pair of hoop earrings and a double hoop pendant on a chain.

A

ndrew Klazinga from Constantia lives for entertaining people through magic.

Klazinga is a magician and a mentalist, something he has been doing for about 16 years. And he is not about to stop anytime soon.

“When I was young I went to a party and there was a magician there. I was thrilled with his magic and I just knew that is something that I wanted to do. I asked him where he learnt it and he said at the College of Magic,” he says.

“I went to the college so that I could enrol but I was told I was too young. I waited for two years for me to enrol there. I just knew this was something that I wanted to do and I really enjoy entertaining people.”

He completed the six-year course. Since then he has performed in Zimbabwe and Nigeria. He is also a member of the Cape Magicians Circle.

“After graduating I taught at the college for six years part-time while studying Mechatronic Engineering at UCT. Currently I run a start-up I founded while spending my

spare time performing mentalism and doing photography.”

Though he has been in the industry for so long he has never had his own show – until now.

Using psychology, illusion and some devious trickery, his show, If I really did have powers, takes the audience on a journey into a magical world where having powers of the mind appears to be possible. He will do quirky, jaw-dropping demonstrations that will make audience members laugh and gasp at the same time in his show which is part of this year’s Fringe Cape Town Festival.

“You will be mystified and amazed as you slowly start wondering whether the title’s ‘if’ should actually be there. It is going to be amazing. I’m really looking forward to it. I have never done a one-man show so I’m excited about this one. This show is a collection of all my experience and passions,” he says.

Performances are at the German Club, 6 Roodehek Terrace on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost R80 each. There are also performances at the Jolly Carp Organic Market, 38 Sasmeer Road, Retreat tomorrow and Friday. Tickets cost R50 each.

he winners of the People’s Post SpecSavers Community Champions Elders Awards were announced at MyFavor8 restaurant in Mandela Rhodes Place in the CBD on Saturday.

Sarah Daniels (77) of Bridgetown was named the winner of the 70-80 years category, Mavis Frew (91) won the 80-plus category and the People’s Choice Award, as voted for by our readers, went to Jo Maxwell (79) of Pinelands.

In the 70-80 years category Maxwell came in second place and Sheraaz Maarman (74) of Bishop Lavis third.

Arnold Hendricks (83) from Steenberg was the runner-up in the 80-plus category and Shelmerdene de Gersigny (84) from Rosebank came in third.

ergvliet High School was transformed into a magical battlefield when the College of Magic hosted this year’s Western Cape Junior Magician Championships there on Saturday 23 September.

The showdown tested participants’ mettle in showmanship, presentation, technique, originality and entertainment value. The 10 competitors vied for the titles and the opportunity to attend international magic events.

Jamian Fortune from Bishop Lavis and Sonwabile Mekuto from Old Crossroads won the Close-up and Stage Magician titles respectively.

The two winners, both 20 years old, are thrilled with their achievement and say they worked hard on their acts for long.

To be recognised for this by their magical role models is an honour, they say.

Renowned Durban magician Mo Moorad, better known as MoMagic, was one of five judges. He says he was impressed with the calibre of entrants.

year of judging the competition and just seeing the future talent, these youngsters who will be out in the industry entertaining audiences professionally in a few years, was heart-warming. The College of Magic, now in its 37th year of teaching the art of magic and its allied arts as well as life-skills to children and adults, has hosted the championships for more than 30 years.

David Gore, director of the college, says: “The championships were well attended this year and it is fantastic to see this level of support for the magical arts. We are incredibly proud of our contestants and winners and we look forward to their future magical feats,” he says.

TEDxYouth speakers will be sharing their ideas around the theme “embracing diversity”.

TEDx talks embrace youth TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji Eight young speakers will take to the TEDxYouth@CapeTown stage soon to share their take on the importance of embracing diversity as South Africans.

The speakers are aged between 16 and 24 years and will unpack topics such as gender inequality, understanding societal structures, discovering self-love and exploring multiplicity in design.

This annual, independently organised TEDx event takes place at Bergvliet High School on Friday 13 October at 19:00.

TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to “ideas worth spreading”, usually in the form of short, powerful talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED’s annual conference in Canada and made available for free online.

Attendees can look forward to the participation of a local TED-Ed youth club and other youth development groups.

Guest speaker Marietta Hopley is a self-

accomplished, successful Cape Town entrepreneur and humanitarian.

The Bergvliet High brass band will celebrate the theme with their upbeat, authentic African music, complemented by the guest appearance of Elandré Schwartz, a recording artist who will be taking the audience on his musical journey from student to instant fame.

Sian Gibbs, the curator of this year’s event, says: “Giving back to the local community is an integral part of this year’s experience. Our very motto is ‘for the youth, by the youth’.”

Parallel to the speaker workshops and event run-up, the organising team is holding a book collection drive to benefit Hanover Park Secondary School. Ticket sales for the event will also go to this initiative.

“We challenge the Cape Town community to donate reading and educational books to help us fill the shelves of the school library,” says Gibbs.

The Plain Media and Performing Arts Foundation will host the inaugural Cape Town Super Talent Search competition. Auditions are open this weekend.

The organisation was established with the filming of Mitchell’s Plain: The movie which was released last year, but only registered as a non-profit organisation in April this year. Robin van der Byl, founder of the organisation, says he was inspired by his mother to organise the competition.

The foundation is the host of the competition. The judges will be industry professionals.The auditions will be held at the YMCA building, 7 Pisa Close, Portlands. Categories include singing, dancing and poetry.

There is no age restriction for the competition and auditions are open to anyone from Cape Town.Written permission is required for contestants who are younger than 16 years.The auditions will take place on Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00 and on Sunday from 13:00 to 20:00. Call backs will take place on Sunday from 16:00.

A total of 30 participants will be selected to compete in the competition, that will include two months of training and four concerts all over the city. There is a cash prize of R10 000 and additional prizes to the value of R40 000. All participants mus complete and online registration form.

Music line­up for first fest

T

he first Muizenberg Jazz Festival is set to take place at the Masque Theatre on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October.

The line-up includes 10 local and international jazz acts that will each perform an hour-long set over the two days.

V Jazz Yard Academy: This youth band has wowed audiences wherever they performed this past year, very often mixing on stage with some of the most highly respected local musicians, such as Ramon Alexander, Buddy Wells and Andrew Ford.

V Muriel Marco: This Argentinian singer, composer and keyboard player will impress local audiences with the launch of her ND Project’s EP at the festival. Having performed as part of international group Tucan Tucan, as well as releasing her own music, the Muriel Marco – ND Project sees her composing and playing music with no boundaries regarding genre or instrumentation.

V Bokani Dyer: Considered a leader of the new contemporary wave of young local jazz artists, this pianist and composer’s music is appreciated for its creativity and emotional depth, with “soulful notes, spiritual tones, sophisticated concepts and simply presented notions”. He has won multiple awards, including the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz in 2011.

V Hanepoot Big Band: This big band, consisting of 18 jazz musicians from all over Cape Town, is unique in that they only play indigenous jazz, including some original material as well as their own arrangements of lesserknown local jazz tunes. Music lovers who

have been to their concerts over the past 16 years have raved about the energetic performances featuring marabi, goema and swing tunes.

V Bongani Sotshononda: This internationally acclaimed chromatic marimba player, percussionist and composer has impressed audiences for the past twenty years. His work includes collaborations with world renowned vibraphonists like Stephon Harris (from New York), Pascal Schumacher (Belgium), Magda de Vries (who now lectures in Japan) and the UCT big band headed by Prof Mike Campbell.

V MSMF: This group was created in 2015 by a group of friends seeking a platform to present their original music. They’ve since gone on to play extensively in and around the Cape and have their music featured on film. Out of every new composition an exciting freedom is created and grown into while respecting the forms which draw mainly from contemporary and old school hip-hop, contemporary jazz and South African jazz.

V McCoy Mrubata band: The multi-award winning saxophonist from Langa was surrounded in childhood by many African hymns, from the sounds of Zion churches to the brassy music of the Merry Macs band who rehearsed opposite his home. With the difficulty of living under the apartheid government and the 1976 youth uprising, McCoy left school and followed his music passion.

He studied informally under the likes of Madoda Gxabeka, the Ngcukanas, Winston Ngozi, Ezra and many Langa greats.

Driver pumped for RX debut

S

outh African rally driver Ashley HaighSmith will make his World RX debut in an Olsbergs MSE Supercar at the Gumtree World RX of South Africa, round 12 of this year’s FIA world rallycross championship.

Cape Town RX is the final round of the world championship and takes place at Killarney on 11 and 12 November.

Haigh-Smith is the second South African to announce he will compete at his local event.

Haigh-Smith has amassed plenty of experience behind the wheel, having competed in the junior world rally championship – the only South African driver to have done so.

He also holds the record as the youngest ever South African S1600 champion.

This year, he is competing in the French Peugeot 208 rally cup.

“I have always been interested in rallycross, but when I was invited to the launch of the World Rallycross of South Africa in Cape Town earlier this year, it was like a switch was tripped and I could think of nothing else,” explains Haigh-Smith.

“We have to be realistic about our objectives coming into the final event of the World RX season. The competition is incredibly strong. I will give my all and be relying on the deep experience and tactical support my race team, OMSE, will offer me.”

ANDRE CRUYWAGEN UCT were capped as this year’s Safa Cape Town regional women’s league champions after they slaughtered Atlantis Leeds Ladies 9-0 at UCT on Saturday.

The students – undefeated this season – were inspired by their coach Ahmed Parker throughout the season. His consistent input lifted their spirits.

They will be competing in the provincial playoffs on 21 October.

“We’re working hard towards the playoffs and aiming to win promotion into the Sasol division,” says Parker.

Earon Isaacs (two goals), Mimosa Mguqulwa, Cyndi Mendoza, Nina Katnis, Nina Woermann, Emelia Aggouras, Ester Sampson and Ashleigh Mckie scored for UCT. Heideveld Female Football Academy easily beat Mighty City Ladies 4-0 in their encounter in Heideveld.

Fazlin Adams scored two goals, and Kim Mentoor and Verenice Prins helped set the victory tone for the hosts.

CPUT and Phoenix Spurs Ladies played to a goalless draw at CPUT in Bellville on Saturday.

Haigh-Smith is due to test the Olsbergs MSE Supercar in Europe in the coming weeks, but admits it will be a steep learning curve.

“There’s so much to learn, but you can be sure I will give my all to represent South Africa and give fans something to cheer for.

I’m really pumped for November,” says Haigh-Smith.

Kommetjie surfers sweep series J

ake Elkington from Kommetjie clinched the premier u.18 boys’ Billabong junior series title in Cape St Francis on Sunday.

The 20th annual champions were crowned after the fourth and final event in this year’s series was completed in highly contestable waves and glassy conditions.

Jake’s win earned him a coveted trip to Bali. Elkington also topped the World Surf League (WSL) Africa junior regional rankings and he is this year’s WSL Africa junior champion.

Ceara Knight from Cape Town secured two event victories on her way to the u.14 girls’ title. Caroline Brown, also from Cape Town, placed third.

Kyra Bennie from Vredehoek walked away as the u.12 boys’ series champion, winning three of the four events this year.
