rom being a wanted criminal to becoming a pastor of the Baptist Church, Vuyo Nyabaza (33) now also works as a leader of an organisation based in Woodstock that helps former prisoners like him.

He joined the Message Trust NGO in 2014 after years of struggling to find a job and acceptance because of his criminal record and past. He says his life turned around while he was serving the last years of his sentence at Pollsmoor prison after being sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

That sentencing came after five years of awaiting trial following his arrest in 2000 for a number of crimes, including robbery, theft

“Before getting arrested I was living a life every young man desires – driving the best cars, owning a house in my teens and popular in my community. I led the gang.

“But now I had nothing and my father had passed on. God was my only hope and during my search for a job I came across the Message and I was accepted and treated well. I realised this is where I belonged,” he adds.

He says since he got out he wanted to help youngsters, especially those with problems with drugs, gangsterism and former prisoners. The organisation was doing exactly that, uplifting and creating jobs for them. He started volunteering and after years he finally got a permanent job.

and house breaking. He says he escaped in 2004 and became a wanted fugitive. When he was found all the other charges against him were withdrawn. He was convicted of escaping from prison and was sentenced to five years.

He says over the years, he had to maintain a status as a popular, respected gang member. One day the message of a pastor who was a regular visitor to Pollsmoor grabbed him. He then decided to start his life over.

“Prison was terrible. I lost hope and had given up my life to gangsterism because that was the only way, but when I got out life became even worse. It was like I was still being punished for my actions. No-one trusted me in my community, no-one would employ me because of my record. I was down and out,”

prisoners. He is also a radio presenter and a pastor at the Baptist Church.

Nyabaza says he had wanted to quit gangsterism even before being convicted but “gangsterism has only one door: The entrance. There is no exit”. “Gangsterism looks glamorous and attractive from the outside but it is like hell. You live in fear, you regret it but you just cannot do anything. If you have not started with it, please do not.”

He says there are signs to notice when a young person joins a gang. He says every gang group has its unique style, it could be a dress code or a language that is only done by those gang members. “You might take those things for granted but they mean something to them; that is how it starts,” says Nyabaza.

Valkenberg’s historic buildings restored T

he second phase of a R150m refurbishment of the historical buildings at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital in Observatory has been completed.

The project was run by the department of transport and public works for the provincial health department.

It is aimed at providing a healthy and safe environment following investigations that proved the old infrastructure had damp rot in the roof and floors.

Byron la Hoe, spokesperson of the Department of Transport and Public Works, says: “The restoration of heritage buildings constructed in the early 1900s presented many challenges. Investigations were required to establish the condition of structural timbers and extensive remedial work was carried out to address beetle infestation and damp rot in the roof structures and floors.

“New trees and water-wise plants have been planted to provide shade for parking and complete the historic precinct and its surrounds.

“The department of transport and public

works is committed to providing short-term work opportunities and to developing emerging contractors. Over R9m was spent on targeted contractor businesses and R2.9m on local labour [and] a total of 30 people received on-site training in painting, carpentry and joinery.”

He says the R57m project will now provide the hospital with new accommodation for different support services, including administration, records, archives, bulk stores, laundry, cleaning services, staff clinic, hall and adjacent boardroom.

He also says the buildings are naturally ventilated using the historic Boyle ventilation system, which was fully restored and put back into operation.

Other historical mechanical equipment, including an old coal-fired Cochran boiler, weir pumps and an autoclave, have been retained as significant historical artefacts.

The completion of phase two followed shortly after phase one was finished last year.

Donate to save a child The Children’s Hospital Trust is asking for support to help raise funds to buy life-saving equipment for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Members of the public can donate online an amount of R67, R670 or R6700. The fundraising drive is part of the Mandela Day celebration and will ensure that the newly upgraded ICU is equipped.

This unit is aimed at giving world-class emergency care to children in a critical condition.

The trust has published a video on YouTube to show the importance of providing these children with the medical care they need.

The trust’s organisers say it currently takes more than 12 hours for a child to reach an ICU in South Africa.

The City’s safety and security directorate has started physical and written assessments for recruits who will help fight crime.

Safety teams established to help fight gangs Training for the first batch of recruits for neighbourhood safety teams (NSTs) to help drive down gang and drug-related crime and other social challenges will start later this month.

Officials of the City of Cape Town’s safety and security directorate have started conducting physical and written assessments for recruits.

This initiative is designed to take the City’s safety and security interventions in crime hotspots one step further, by ensuring a constant presence in areas plagued by gang violence and associated social ills.

In the last decade the City has instituted a number of interventions to support the fight against violent crime, which is the primary responsibility of the police.

Some of these interventions include: . specialised units, like the Metro Police gang and drug task team and the special investigations unit; . the introduction of school resource officers with the provincial education department; . neighbourhood safety officers to provide “bobby-on-the-beat” policing; . ceasefire and “Cure Violence” interventions; . shot spotter gunfire detection; . the Law Enforcement stabilisation unit; . training and equipping neighbourhood watches; and . the introduction of the informant management and reward system.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services, says these interventions have helped to reduce gang murders. These used to make up almost a fifth of the murders in Cape Town, but they now make up just over 11%.

“This figure is still far from satisfactory, but is a huge improvement on where we were as a city three years ago.

“The biggest challenge has been dealing with the flare-ups of gang violence in different parts of the city, which leads to redeploying staff and interrupting the progress and stabilisation of the previous hotspot.

“The neighbourhood safety teams will offer a static and ongoing presence to guard against future flare-ups, but also to address other crime and antisocial concerns,” he says.

City officials have identified the 10 policing precincts with the highest crime rates to roll out the neighbourhood safety teams initiative.

It is envisioned that between 90 and 120 workers will be deployed in each precinct to expand the existing enforcement interventions, while also enhancing their social support through social development projects.

Around R20m will be spent on recruitment, training and deployment of Law Enforcement staff in Hanover Park, Philippi and Delft in the year until June next year.

“The neighbourhood safety teams will allow the City to offer relief from the ongoing gang violence in a sustainable way, which we have not been able to do in the past. It’s important to stress that this is not a purely enforcementdriven intervention, but one that takes a whole-of-society approach. Many of the enforcement headaches result from social issues that are left to spiral, so we need to tackle both if we are to make a dent in the crime rate,” says Smith.

Open your heart to elders Many of us have fond memories of the lessons we learnt at the feet of our grandparents and community elders.

This month the People’s Post staff are opening their hearts and honouring their elders.

Along with many other South Africans giving their 67 minutes for Madiba this month, the team of People’s Post will be dedicating the month of July to the legacy of late president Nelson Mandela by showing appreciation for our elders.

For our 67 minutes, and as part of our #WeKPost charity campaign, the team will be spending time with residents of the Beaconvale Frailcare Centre in Mitchell’s Plain at the end of July.

The home gets by on very little financial support and often becomes the sole provider for seniors, with very few families visiting or offering support to the facility.

The centre cares for almost 150 seniors, both in full-time care and after or day care, with the recent addition of a ward for patients who need specialist care or are terminally ill.

For the handover, we will be collecting much-needed items. We invite you, our loyal readers, to become part of this initiative by donating towards this cause.

Suspected abuse of toddler’s sisters NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

he two sisters of 18-month-old Jeremiah Joshua Ruiters from Factreton, who was allegedly raped and murdered, have also been examined to find out if they had also been assaulted.

Their maternal grandfather, Pastor Ronald Ruiters, says: “Both families were shattered by the revelation of sexual assault and a decision to have the girls tested. Their father’s family took them to Groote Schuur and results were negative.

“That was a relief for us, because we wondered if he could rape a boy what has he done to the girls?”

Jeremiah’s mother and her boyfriend have been arrested for his murder. He had looked after Jeremiah during the day while his mother worked.

The boy’s stepfather (26) is charged with rape and murder while the boy’s 30-year-old mother is charged with child neglect and murder.

The two appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday last week for their bail application.

Their charges followed the death of Jeremiah. He was declared dead upon his arrival at Factreton clinic early last month.

He reportedly suffered injuries to his upper body and neck.

Ruiters believes his daughter does not belong in jail. Seeing her spending time waiting for her bail application hurts, he says.

He says his daughter is a caring mother for her children and has never shown signs of violence.

He was talking after the postponement of the bail application last Wednesday. It was postponed to tomorrow.

The legal representative of the two suspects, Thanaa Abrahams, told the court she could no longer represent them both.

Magistrate Joe Magele said the pregnant mother would remain in the hospital section of the prison until tomorrow.

Family members and friends of the mother say they do not understand why she has to remain in custody for so long because she is pregnant and “undoubtedly innocent”.

One of the neighbours, Nabewayan Jacobs, says: “We know she did not abuse the baby, she loved him dearly. Her mistake was to trust that man, she should have never left them with him.”

The provincial social development department is accepting applications for funding for the new three-year funding cycle. Any qualifying organisations that provide social welfare or community development services on behalf of the department should apply.

Currently funded organisations and residential and non-residential facilities should also apply.

The applications are due by the end of the month.

Two nabbed for drug dealing A man and a woman were arrested during a random crime prevention patrol in Woodstock.

A tip-off about ongoing drug dealing in Woodstock led to the two arrests in Mascani informal settlement on Wednesday last week.

A man (41) and a woman (35) were found in possession of 227 units of heroin, mandrax tablets, 11 packets of tik and an undisclosed amount of money.

According to the police report the Woodstock crime prevention unit followed up on complaints received about suspected illegal activities in Mascani, Woodstock.

Police spokesperson Sinathi Joni says: “The police members ensured that the offenders are brought to book by arresting a 41-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman.”

They have appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court and face charges of dealing and possession of drugs, Joni confirmed.

Joni says police make it a priority to remove drugs from the streets, as he says it is an important element of crime prevention. He says many violent crimes are likely to be directly linked to drug abuse.

Some of the drugs that were found on a man and a woman in Mascani, Woodstock after police received a tip­off.

Federation supports sex workers’ safety NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) has confirmed signing a paper declaring to support the full decriminalisation of sex work in South Africa.

Fedusa management says they have decided to join hands with the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) and Sisonke movement of sex workers in South Africa to help create a safe and recognised working environment for sex workers.

The paper was signed at the Sweat offices in Observatory late last month.

Dorothy Ndhlovu, Fedusa’s vice president for social justice, says the sex workers are human and they should be treated with dignity regardless of the kind of job they are doing.

She says: “We support the arguments advanced by Sweat that human rights should also be afforded to sex workers in South Africa.

“We see the importance of decriminalisation of sex work, more as a cultural issue and from a human rights and dignity aspect point of view.

“Our Constitution makes it clear that every human has rights and no-one is al-

lowed to violate them. Sex work is the kind of job they do to survive and they are not breaking any law. They have children and families to support like any of us.

“We live in poverty, there are no jobs and because they chose a kind of job we are not familiar with, that does not mean we should discriminate.

“We can just have an input to improve and change the manner in which the job is perceived and conducted,” says Ndhlovu.

She emphasises that the federation will fight for the safety and accessibility of necessary facilities for sex workers without being judged. Ndhlovu says over the years these workers have fallen victim to crime.

Duduzile Dlamini, a Sweat and Sisonke mobiliser, says: “Fedusa has taken a step in the right direction to see sex work as work and to protect the oldest profession in the world. Hopefully other unions will follow these steps and review their policies and support all workers, which include sex workers.”

Recently, Sisonke also celebrated the launch of its first local clinic that will provide in the medical needs of sex workers and their families in a safe environment without being judged.

he organisers of the annual Blisters for Bread charity family fun walk are aiming even higher this year, following a record number of entries last year.

Last year, 13 624 people participated in the event. Thanks to their entry fees, the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PFSA) could give over 1700 disadvantaged children nutritious breakfast and lunch at school for an entire year.

Entries have opened for this year’s event which will take place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 27 August.

It will include two routes along the Sea Point promenade: A 10km walk that starts

at 07:30 and a 5km walk that starts at 08:00.

Entries cost R50 per person. Each entry fee will enable PSFA to provide 20 underprivileged schoolchildren with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch.

PSFA is a registered non-profit organisation that is dedicated to feeding hungry children at their schools. PSFA currently provides daily cooked meals to over 27 000 children at 160 primary, secondary and specialneeds schools, early childhood development centres, safe parks and colleges throughout the province.

Blisters for Bread, which was started in 1968 by concerned staff and students of Sav-

io College in Lansdowne and handed over to PSFA to manage, has grown from strength to strength.

Entries can be done online or the entry form can be downloaded at www.psfa.org.za.

Entry forms can also be collected at PSFA’s offices at 26 Purdey Road, Sheffield Business Park in Philippi, the Top Events offices at 7 Koeberg Road, Maitland and at selected Pick n Pay and Sportsmans Warehouse branches.

hrough a project called Boeber Run, a non-profit organisation feeds thousands of empty stomachs in the southern suburbs.

The Lace Up organisation’s project operates in Maitland, Rondebosch, Salt River, Walmer Estate, Thornton, Lansdowne, Wynberg, Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein, and Crawford.

The organisers hold monthly runs where registered runners and amateurs run a 5km route in the evening to a nearby informal settlement to deliver food parcels, warm soup and gifts to needy residents.

During the run a number of vehicles carrying parcels drive along with them, supporting the runners.

The organisation’s most recent run last month started in Voortrekker Road in Salt River. The runners went up to 6th and 10th avenues in Kensington, then proceeded to Woodstock and finished in District Six. The NPO’s chairperson, Faizel Jacobs,

says about 80 runners participated while hundreds of people were served warm meals on the night and homeless people received blankets.

Jacobs says: “We started with only eight runners in 2015 but now we have 40 registered and many other people participate.

“With this we aim to make a change through sport. When we look at the high number of people we help every month, it is clear that there is a problem that needs serious intervention from those who can afford to help. The NPO collect donations and we encourage people to support us where they can.”

He says people can donate food, blankets and second-hand clothes.

A resident of Kensington, Zainulabideen van de Schyff, says as the neighbourhood watch they always support initiatives that aim to help needy people.

He says the beneficiaries from Kensington were grateful for the gifts. He says the watch members were also grateful for the donations and helped with the deliveries.

Despite operating at 75%, City of Cape Town officials have assured Green Point residents that no upgrades will be needed to the Green Point sewage outfall for the next 10 to 15 years.

The capacity of the sewage outfall and needed upgrades were raised at a recent ward 115 meeting by the Green Point Residents and Ratepayers’ Association.

The City’s sewage outfalls, of which there are also ones at Hout Bay and Camps Bay, came under renewed scrutiny after the City advertised a permit application to keep on discharging effluent water into the sea at Green Point, Camps Bay and Hout Bay (“Sewage nothing new”, People’s Post, 16 June 2015).

The permit application was needed after a change in national regulation necessitated a public participation process.

The City has since been carrying out various tests to assess the impact of the outfalls, which show the water quality is low in bacteria levels.

Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water, waste services and energy, says based on the City’s master plan, all three outfall lines have sufficient capacity for the next 10 to 15 years, and no upgrades are planned to any of the lines.

The City operates three outfalls that discharge wastewater deep underwater far into the sea where the effluent is safely dispersed, she says.

All three include pre-treatment works where sand, grit, plastic, paper, rags and any other foreign material is removed, a pump station, an underwater pipeline designed to withstand wave actions and possible damage from ship anchors, and a diffuser at the end of the pipeline that helps to disperse the wastewater, Limberg explains.

“Marine outfalls are complex engineering designs to safely disperse wastewater deep underwater far from the shore. They are located in areas where ocean currents help to disperse and carry the effluent away from the coast. The volume of the sea helps to dilute the waste to nearly undetectable concentrations, and bacteria and pathogens die off while mixing with the sea water,” she explains.

The outfalls generally serve densely populated urban areas where the establishment of a land-based treatment works would be difficult due to limited land, Limberg adds.

The Green Point outfall was the first marine outfall and was constructed in Mouille Point in 1895. Four outfalls have since been built in the area.

“The original outfall was replaced by a 180m pipeline in 1927. The current one, which serves the greater CBD from Woodstock to Bantry Bay, is 1700m long and discharges 28m below sea level. It was urgently constructed and commissioned in 1993 to replace the previous outfall (built in 1985) which had been damaged by winter storms in 1989.

“Currently this outfall is treating 30m litres of wastewater per day from around 164 000 people,” says Limberg.

It was confirmed at the ward 115 meeting that the outfall has a capacity of treating 40m litres.

The Camps Bay outfall, which was commissioned in 1977 to replace a previous inadequate outfall and only services the Camps Bay area, currently treats 2.5m litres of wastewater per day from around 22 000 people.

The Hout Bay outfall, constructed in 1991, only services the Hout Bay area and currently treats 5.6m litres of wastewater per day for around 43 000 people.

The City’s sewage outfalls expel roughly 5% of all the water treated at the City’s water treatment plants.

Century of photos on display Photographs spanning a century will be on display this month.

South Africa’s first member-based photographic society, the Cape Town Photographic Society (CTPS), will be exhibiting prints from current members, as well as prints and photographic memorabilia dating from their founding year, 1890.

Classical Vintage to Creative Modern is an exhibition of prints submitted by more than 30 current society members in Loop Street until Friday 21 July.

Over the past 127 years the CTPS has promoted and supported the development of photography. The members’ photographic

abilities range from beginners to a high standard of salon. Several society members regularly receive awards on both national and international level.

The society’s heritage will be commemorated in a small vintage section of the exhibition, where a few old prints, cameras and glass slides will be on display – including a print of Table Mountain taken from Greenmarket Square in 1890 and Arthur Elliott’s photo of the building of Rhodes Memorial taken in 1905.

he planned cull of fallow deer, which had been scheduled to start on Robben Island last week, has been contested by animal activists.

The SPCA has requested clarity on welfare concerns and the omission of certain details in the Robben Island Museum’s proposal, say SPCA spokesperson Tara McGovern.

“The project plan excludes other animals which will be included in the cull ‘opportunistically’, such as feral cats and European rabbits. There is no documented protocol for the cull process or the process that will be followed to locate and humanely euthanise kits and kittens. When all the cats are eliminated from the island, what protocols will be put in place to control rat populations as this may impact on seabird chicks and other indigenous species of fauna on the island?” she says.

The culling project is aimed at reducing the number of deer, in line with the carrying capacity of the island as a habitat (“Deer to be hunted on Robben Island”, People’s Post, 27 June).

Fallow deer are not indigenous to the island. Initially only three fallow deer were introduced to the island in 1963.

The deer population increased throughout the mid-2000s to over 300 animals.

The museum undertook a similar culling exercise between 2009 and 2010 to ensure that the population is maintained, Bongiwe Nzeku, marketing and tourism manager of the museum, previously said.

Various stakeholders, including welfare groups such as the SPCA, had been consulted, Nzeku said.

But the SPCA has not been given assurance that all non-lethal methods of reducing numbers have been explored, McGovern says.

“This begs the question: Is the cull only being considered because it is less timeconsuming and more cost-effective when compared to translocation and sterilisation?”

According to environmental legislation, a control plan should be developed to weigh up culling versus relocation and to determine a suitable carrying capacity, McGovern adds.

“Sterilisation should be strongly considered as a non-lethal way to population control. It would appear as if previous culls have been ineffective and that the deaths of many were meaningless because animals were allowed to continue breeding uncontrollably.

“We understand that the fallow deer are routinely encountered at night foraging for food in the gardens and scavenging from waste bins, indicating that food is limited on the island and that failing to contain numbers may well result in lingering deaths from starvation.

“We insist on evidence of the consideration of non-lethal methods of population control and that the proposal incorporate the cull protocol for all species af-

Allan Perrins, CEO of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, adds: “The fact that the situation has been allowed to spiral out of control is an indictment on the museum’s poor leadership who should be charged with gross neglect of this preservation and conservation-worthy world heritage site.

“We look forward to being a part of an intelligent solution and will never be bullied into condoning what can best be described as a conservation ruse designed to slaughter exotic animals on a wholesale basis,” Perrins says In response to the SPCA’s concerns, Nzeku says the museum has conducted research and consulted the SPCA in the decision to cull the fallow deer population.

The current numbers are at unsustainable levels and are severely impacting on both the environment and the deer population, the museum’s management says.

“Like many other protected areas, the museum has been conducting culling of animals since 2008 and SPCA wildlife inspectors have been visiting the island to monitor progress and offer advice. Studies have proven that cats are amongst the largest predatory threat to groundbreeding seabirds and the rehabilitation of the African black oystercatcher population on the island was directly attributed to the reduction of the cat population on the island.

“In 2013, Stellenbosch University found that the island’s vegetation density and diversity dramatically improved with the intensification of the rabbit culling project.

“The museum’s long-term objective is to rehabilitate the vegetation to a condition where it will become self-sustaining and can be maintained with minimal management inputs whilst still providing the necessary habitat for seabirds and indigenous species.”

The culling of cats and European rabbits on the island is in keeping with measures that are used to effectively maintain populations to avoid having to conduct large-scale culls in the future, they add.

“Similar to the fallow deer population, the island needs to have a sustainable population of all species before taking effective and non-lethal preventative measures to ensure a healthy balance in the island ecosystem.

“As there are no large predators on the island, it is particularly important that this balance is effectively managed to protect all species on the island.”

Cape Nature’s management has issued a permit to authorise the museum to do the culling.

The meat harvested during the cull will be used for human consumption and the pelts of the deer are to be used as raw materials in an upcoming craft project on the island, Nzeku previously said.

One of the biggest culprits causing the damage to marine life is single-use plastic bags.

y 2050, is it estimated that there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish.

And marine life is already feeling the impact of our high plastic use, with plastic rubbish posing a threat to all organisms in the ocean. Animals often mistake plastic bags for food. Once ingested, the animals die from intestinal blockages and starvation.

Currently, 80% of all marine litter is plastic, according to a statement by the Two Oceans Aquarium. This month, the aquarium’s management is calling on Capetonians to reconsider their plastic use as part of a global “Plastic-free July” campaign.

Plastic pollution Over a million seabirds are killed each year due to plastic pollution, according to the aquarium’s statement.

According to staff of Sanccob, they have admitted 59 birds with plastic-related injuries since 2010. Although this figure may seem small, these are just the birds that manage to survive long enough for someone to notice their injury and be rescued.

The most problematic type of plastic is nylon fishing line. This can get wrapped around a bird’s beak which will cause it to starve. If wrapped around its legs, it makes flying difficult and could cause an open wound when the bird struggles to free itself.

If caught around the bird’s wing, it will prevent them from flying entirely, which also means it is unable to escape danger.

Other plastic that is dangerous includes bottle caps, straws and plastic bags, which disintegrate into small pieces. These can get lodged in the bird’s throat or stomach, and can prevent the bird from swallowing food.

are also a problem, as these can get stuck around a bird’s beak and neck, which will also prevent swallowing.

Only around half of the birds that come into Sanccob with injuries due to plastic are able to be released back into the wild. The rest either have injuries that are too severe or are too weak when they arrive.

But it’s not just birds that face the dangers of plastic. With over 51 trillion micro pieces of plastic in the ocean, microscopic plankton are feeding on plastic which causes the plastic to enter the food chain, according to the statement.

Changing behaviour South Africans use around 8bn shopping bags each year; almost all of them end up in landfill. Research has shown that on average a plastic shopping bag is used for just 20 minutes, after which it is thrown away.

The aquarium supports a ban of single-use plastic shopping bags in South Africa through its Rethink the Bag campaign.

This campaign was launched by Hayley McLellan, the aquarium’s environmental campaigner, to educate the public and retailers.

“A plastic shopping bag-free South Africa is certainly achievable in the near future.

All roleplayers, especially consumers, remain responsible for the 8bn plastic shopping bags we use every year in South Africa.

Remember that demand drives supply, so let’s simply stop demanding and choosing them,” says McLellan.

Plastic-free July is a worldwide campaign that aims to raise awareness of the problem with single-use disposable plastics and to challenge people to do something about it.

The campaign asks people to pledge to forego plastic shopping bags, takeaway containers and cutlery, coffee cups and lids and straws for the month of July.

McLellan adds: “Making better everyday choices naturally enhances our awareness of the footprint each of us has on this planet.

Luckily, creating new environmental habits can be swift and simple by participating in the campaign.”

Artscape is planning the biggest entertainment line-up for Youth Month in the theatre complex’s history.

Drama from gang’s view Confessions, a drama that explores what drives humans to committing grave, unforgivable atrocities against each other by illuminating the mind of a criminal, will be performed at Alexander Upstairs from Thursday to Saturday.

The show won the inaugural Abongile Kroza One-hander Festival in the city this year.

It follows the story of a young gang member, Kz, who is the last man standing in his gang. He is not a full-blown gangster but a mere member – a membership which has cost him his friends, family and is about to cost him his life as he finds himself stuck in a nightmare that is quickly catching up with his reality.

Atrocities take place outside our doorsteps daily, including child mutilations, gang rapes and killings. In a quest to find out what, why and how these atrocities take place and what the perpetrators say when asked, why and how people can commit such atrocities, the director followed some of the cases in court and listened to criminals’ testimonies.

With a series of interviews conducted with gang members from the Cape Flats, Confessions explores what drives these people and how they think, plan and deal with the consequences. It also pays attention to the gangs’ socioeconomic and political standing.

khaya le Themba, meaning ‘home of hope’, continues to live up to its name by giving hope to the people of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, especially children.

The non-profit organisation offers afterschool care with structured programmes, including educational support, life skills, therapeutic groups, opportunities for fun and play and a good meal.

The project is an initiative of Kenilworth Vineyard Church and serves 90 children aged six to 12.

An intern at the home has worked with children to write a book about their township. In the book called Ikhaya Tales, the children talk about township life, fire, family, sport, hobbies and education.

Chantal Schoemakers, the brain behind the book, says the book will be an eye-opener for people from outside the townships and outside South Africa.

“My main goal was to make a book with stories from inside the community of Imizamo Yethu to create a greater awareness of township life. Within the book you will find six different chapters talking about how life is for these children in Imizamo Yethu. It is the children’s own thoughts, ideas and imagination,” she says.

Schoemakers, who is from the Netherlands and has been in the country for eight months, adds that through the book she wanted to raise awareness of and support for iKhaya le Themba as it is a safe haven.

“All proceeds from the book will go to iKhaya in order to organise outings for the children and to support the children in their education.

“I have also learnt that life in the township is not easy. People here have a way of making something amazing out of very little. This acts as a constant source of inspiration in my life,” she says.

“Now that the book is finished, the plan is to sell it in different shops, at iKhaya itself, via the internet and to volunteers, visitors, sponsors and supporters.

Ikhaya Tales costs R100 and is available in both print and digital formats. They need help to raise R17 000 to print the book.

“With your support we will also be able to provide a book for each child. They are so proud of their accomplishments and it will be a great joy for them to take one home to their families,” she says.

February ‘in a good place’ M

ichael February from Kommetjie has been awarded the World Surfing League (WSL) commissioner’s wildcard entry into the Corona Open J-Bay which starts its 12 days of contest in Jeffreys Bay tomorrow.

He was overjoyed at the news that he would get to compete against the world’s top 34 ranked surfers after a stellar run of results on the qualifying series (QS) this year.

February has won three QS1000 events and also reached the semi-

finals of the QS10 000 Ballito Pro on Saturday to rocket into fourth position on the QS rankings.

“I’m really, really happy about the wildcard for J-Bay. Reaching the semis at Ballito was such a cool achievement for me and when Travis Logie told me about the wildcard, I was really stoked,” says February.

He has had plenty of experience at Supertubes, reaching the finals of JBU supertrials twice and also competing in the 2015 championship tour event as a last-minute in-

jury replacement for Matt Banting.

“I was given an injury replacement spot at J-Bay two years ago.

But that was a last-minute decision, so this time I have a little more time to prepare for it.

“The forecasts look like the event will only start a couple of days into the window period and after this last result I’m feeling comfortable and couldn’t be better prepared for going into a champsionship tour event,” explains February.

Although the full draw for the

heats have not yet been officially published, February is ranked higher than Dale Staples, who was awarded the wildcard for winning this year’s JBU Supertrials last month. He is likely to line up aganst compatriot and two-time J-Bay winner Jordy Smith and America’s Conner Coffin in the first round.

“As a wildcard you’re always going to be facing the top seeds. Jordy is one of the best out at J-Bay, so it’s going to pretty hard, but I’m really excited about it.

“I’m in a good place right now, enjoying my surfing and enjoying making heats and now I’m getting opportunities like this, so I’m really happy. Having the championship tour between the Ballito and US Open QS10 000 events is great.

It’s good to have these events back to back.”

The winner of round 1 heats advance directly to round 3, while the second and third-placed surfers compete man-on-man in round 2 heats where only the winner advances.

Springbok legend Fredericks ‘an inspiration’ SA Rugby president Mark Alexander has paid tribute to the contribution made to South African rugby by former Saru captain Salie Fredericks, who died on Thursday.

He fought a long battle against diabetes and had both his legs amputated a while ago as a result of the illness.

The gentle giant played more than 200 provincial matches for Western Province in competitions of the former South African Coloured Rugby Football Board and later the non-racial South African Rugby Union.

Under his leadership, Western Province won the Rhodes Cup for three years in succession, from 1971 to 1973.

Fredericks also showed his great prowess as a lock in nine “interracial” tests against the African Springboks and the SA Rugby Federation’s Proteas between 1963 and 1974, scoring three tries.

According to Alexander, South African rugby has lost an inspirational figure.

“Fredericks really made a massive mark on our rugby landscape though his contribution on the playing field, his many administrative roles and his community work,” says Alexander.

“He comes from a proud rugby tradition that is more than 100 years old and was a giant figure in an era when black people were denied the opportunity to represent South Africa internationally.

“Like so many other talented and unsung sporting heroes of his time, Fredericks chose to stay in South Africa and keep the flame of rugby burning while fighting for non-racialism in sport.

“We salute him for his sacrifice and his immense contribution to our rugby, and would like to express our most heartfelt condolences to his family and his large circle of friends,” Alexander says.

Race ‘celebrates life’

Get special entry to fun race

he streets of Cape Town will be bustling with excitement on Wednesday 9 August (Women’s Day) when thousands of runners and walkers dressed in pink participate in the annual Totalsports Women’s Race.

The race is organised in support of PinkDrive, a non-profit company committed to improving breast cancer awareness and education and providing free services to medically uninsured citizens.

“We’re extremely grateful to be part of this year’s Totalsports Women’s Race,” says Fébé Meyer, marketing manager of PinkDrive.

“By being part of the event we are able to raise much needed funds for our organisation and are given the platform to educate people regarding the importance of early detection. The race creates an environment where people can celebrate life and womanhood.”

According to Meagan Davids, mammographer of PinkDrive Cape Town, the race gives PinkDrive the opportunity to reach men and women with the crucial message that “early detection saves lives”.

“In addition to creating awareness around breast cancer, people get to share stories and motivate each other to test and be aware of any changes in their bodies,” says Davids.

“Last year a group of six women stood out for me. They participated in support of their mother and aunt, whom they pushed in a wheelchair. They were all dressed in pink and made a lot of noise. This to me is camaraderie. With this event you can truly honour and remember those touched by the disease.

You also get to see others doing all in their might to fight back.”

Jennifer Heunis, a breast cancer survivor from Rondebosch, will take on the 10km route with her niece.

“I survived breast cancer twice,” says Heunis. “I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2000 and then again in 2003.
