t was all good, clean fun last weekend at the inaugural Chariots of Fire car and bike-wash fundraiser – a collaboration to raise funds for kids’ school shoes. Hosted at Marcus Carwash in Grassy Park, the fundraiser was organised by Chariots of Fire Biking Ministry who aim to raise enough money to buy a pair of school shoes for each of the 800 learners at the three primary schools in Zoar. Zoar, 21km east of Ladismith, is just
49.1km² in size with a population of almost 4 700 people as of the last census in 2011. The biking ministry began providing support to the community after one of their members passed through the town on holiday and recognised a need. Albert Coopstad, a member who visited Zoar last year during the ministry’s first outreach efforts, said the community has no employment opportunities for residents. “Driving through it, you get that impoverished community feel. There is a whole lot of potential and there is a whole lot of hope, and that needs to be nurtured and harvested.
If there’s no investment in the kids then the community as a whole will fall.” In hopes of empowering the children to aim for brighter futures, the ministry reached out to Labeed Marcus, the owner of Marcus Hardware and Carwash, to assist in raising the funds needed to reach their goal. Steven Willems of Chariots of Fire explained: “We’re using his facility and he’s giving us a portion of whatever’s happening here today.” Marcus added: “It’s for Zoar. They approached me and told me they want to donate school shoes for underprivileged school

learners. My company is donating half and they’re donating half of what we make.” They hope to raise enough money to buy the shoes – and possibly also stationery – to donate to the town’s children before their next visit in December. This event will not be the last of its kind. “We’re going to organise different fundraisers for different groups of underprivileged children. We’re going to try and do this once or twice a month.” V For more information or to support, contact Shaun Small on 086 326 2606, Stevie Willems on 084 298 6924 or Leon Fortuin on 083 331 1233.
