CARING AND FEEDING: ‘ALWAYS A PLEASURE’

Spreading the love SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS SAMANTHA.LEE@PEOPLESPOST.CO.ZA @SAMANTHA_LEE121

A

local has shown heart by caring for hundreds of children from Phumlani Village and Riemvasmaak informal settlements. Beryl Williams says she has been feeding

and caring for children from Grassy Park to Lotus River for the past 20 years, making do with money from her own pocket and donations from Pick n Pay Constantia. On Saturday 18 July, in celebration of Mandela Day, Williams fed 500 children. “There is a lot of poverty in Phumlani Village and Riemvasmaak. The kids love me and know me well enough,” she says. Her goodwill is so well-known that when

she arrived at Lotus River on a recent visit she was surrounded by five children looking for something to eat. After buying a few loaves of bread and preparing it, Williams asked them to first go and collect a few bottles before tucking in. By the time they returned, a long line of children had formed. Her friend helped her in making sandwiches and handing out juice to the children. Williams says this warmed her heart,

seeing her friend interact with the children. “I feed 500 kids at the Phumlani Community Centre and it was just one part of my weekly ‘dose’. I love what I am doing. It’s also a great pleasure to give back to the community, especially if you grew up in that area and know all about poverty,” she says. Williams says truancy is rife in the area and alcohol and drug addiction often see parents “forget about their children”.
