hile schools across the country were busy sorting out their personal protective equipment (PPE) and sanitisers for the reopening of schools this week, Kleinberg Primary School went one step further. When learners returned to the school in Ocean View yesterday, Monday 24 August, they were met with a brand new look. Last week, the school set aside three days to repaint and to give the buildings a fresh look. The revamp followed local Kommetjie artist Gill Allderman’s suggestion that the school could do with a mini-makeover. But, as it turned out, the job was no small feat. After contacting the acting school principal, Zaffie Oppelt, and receiving his go-ahead, Allderman began involving the community in the project. “I’ve had nearly 300l of paint donated by the Kommetjie community. Lots of people donated their leftover paint and then I mixed the colours to make a good quantity of solid colours. Mica in Fish Hoek gave me all their off-colour paints and colour mixes, and Buco and Chapman’s also gave us some paint. Some friends of mine donated some money for us to buy paint brushes and such, and that’s how we did it,” Allderman says, adding
that the aim was to achieve a clean, fresh look. Oppelt then called on the residents of Ocean View to make the project their own by assisting with the paint job. “The teachers painted their own classrooms, we had some parents volunteer, and the Grade 7 learners also assisted because they were at the school during the ‘holiday’ period, so they jumped in and helped as well,” he says, adding that the school reached an important milestone in its existence this year. “We are in desperate need of a face lift because our school is 50 years old now, so the school is in need of some tender love and care. And the main idea was for parents and kids to take ownership of the school.” With a new look, the aim is to allow learners to come back and feel refreshed after a year disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. But, Oppelt says: “It’s going to be challenging, welcoming all the learners back, but we are prepared.” Denzil van Graan opened the new term as the new principal of the school and says he looks forward to working with the staff, parents and learners at Kleinberg. “The enthusiasm and joy on the faces of teachers and parents was great to see when classrooms were transformed into new and inviting learning centres for many of our kids who returned yesterday, Monday 24 August,” he says, adding that learners settled in well.
