he Athlone branch of the Women of Change gathered at the Athlone Stadium on Friday for an event which will equip them to help even more people in the future.

It is unclear whether the City of Cape Town will extend the programme or restart it in the new financial year, but what is clear is that the women who form part of the programme will take their newfound skills to improve the lives of those around them.

“I am very impressed with the la-

dies. It is the thing that drove me to do it in the first place is to see the great potential that we have within Athlone, in our communities. We are not just gangs and drugs, we are amazing people with amazing potential. Giving people the opportunity just to do something for themselves, with guidance, is what you see today,” says Mayco member (North) Suzette Little.

Little pioneered the programme during her tenure as councillor of ward 49 and delivered the key note address during the event.

“It is an amazing programme and I am grateful to see that all we

needed was the opportunity. They didn’t really need our help. They just needed to be guided and be left alone and look what they have achieved. I am very proud of them and the programme is run in other areas as well and I see the same result,” she adds.

One of the women who will be continuing to volunteer is Carmen Fisher. She too hopes that the programme will be renewed, but is excited at the prospect of helping out the Lions Club of Athlone.

“It was nice seeing Suzette Little again after a while. All we can do is just hope for the best for us for the future. I am really looking for-

ward to volunteer for the Lions Club. It is going to be a big challenge for us to enter the Lions Club.

From our point of view, we are happy that Suzette Little and Rashid Adams, our ward councillor, are really fighting for this project to continue. If it wasn’t for them, who was going to stand behind us?” asks Fisher.

Geila Wills, district governer for the Lions Club in the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Namibia says that the skills the women have taken on will enable them to provide much needed support to their cause.

Some of the programmes the Women for Change can assist the Lions Club with is eye screening in their sight programme, diabetes testing, providing support for childhood cancer patients.

“There was a lady in Delft who could not see, she had cataracts and the State said she was too old (to be operated on), but through Lions Club, we got her sponsored and within three months she had her sight back and 18 months before she passed on she could see her grandkids and read her Bible.

“That was a success story,” says Wills.

Meanwhile, current ward councillor for ward 49 and Lions Club president for the region Rashid Adams says that the Women for Change will be assisting in the long term.

“At the end of the day, we have been put in our positions to serve our community and how best to serve our community when you have a good understanding of what is required. That is what we are talking about when we talk about partnering with the communities,” he says.

Adams also reiterated the desire for continuity.

“It is no use investing into programmes and then it is short lived, because the programmes only last for three months.

“After that three months the person no longer gets their stipend or EPWP payment, and their activity within that programme stops.

“But this is what these women are committed to do, to continue whether they are going to be re-employed by the City or not.

They are going to continue.

“They are going to ensure that what they have been capacitated with is going to be shared with the rest of the community.

“Their job now is to get involved with our civic associations, our neighbourhood watches, disaster risk volunteer groups to say that this is what we are about, this is what we are able to do and how do we partner with each other to make the load easier.”

Philippi police seek information on murder

ngoing discussions are being held on the disposal of land in Induland Crescent in Pinati Estate.

Ivan Anthony, manager of the Mayoral Urban Renewal Programme (Murp) for the City of Cape Town briefed subcouncil 17 recently. He said a meeting took place with the City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA) where they needed to get the site development plan from the abutting land owners, Gatti Ice-cream.

A portion of the land is being used as a solid waste drop-off facility, which Anthony says will form part of any agreement.

“We having a meeting on how much amount of land is required for that development. The solid waste guys are prepared to look at it and when we do the contractual agreement for the land, the management lease agreement or the selling of the portion of land that there will be a clause within that agreement to say that Gatti will have to reestablish the drop-off facility as part of their

development and the other part of the land,” he says.

He added that another portion of the land is earmarked for high-density development, while a remaining portion may be used for commercial development.

“It is also important to understand that it is a competitive process, because we cannot just give land over.

“There will be a public participation process which will be followed where these guys will be making this application. But because of the fact that they (Gatti) are the abutting owners of that land, I don’t think that it will be too big of a challenge. I think we are all clear that this is what we want to achieve and we are moving quite swiftly with that one,” says Anthony.

“The operational side is that the place is clean and we are now dealing with making sure that the parking situation will be sorted out so that we will get clear understanding where the cars are currently parking, that we give them the temporary use of that space until such time the future housing development will take shape,” he adds.

Subcouncil member Garrin Cavanagh questioned if Gatti is the only beneficiaries of this proposal.

“We heard that Gatti made an application to buy that land. Now I hear that you are going to turn their application into a temporary use, but they wanted to buy the place.

So they are going to get the benefit of the tarred area. Now, are they in agreement that they are going to get a temporary use of that area?”

Anthony explained that businesses in the area do not have any parking and subsequently a plan to address the issue was necessitated to stop vehicles from parking illegally.

“Any person who applies for developing a new entity needs to have ample parking for the people who are visiting or their staff itself, and provisions have not been made.

Now you find that all the businesses virtually are parking in the road and now actually also invaded a portion of the Induland Park land. That is the reason why we need to deal with that to find a solution for that specific issue,” he says.

Wheelchair water fun for all In an effort to create awareness and make beaches universally accessible to people with disabilities, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) has donated amphibious wheelchairs to four municipalities, including the City of Cape Town.

The amphibious wheelchairs were donated with funds from the Ford Motor Company Fund.

The amphibious wheelchairs were supplied by AccessRec and have a unique design that allows them to move easily on the sand, as well as to enter and float in the sea.

The aim is to create awareness and to achieve universal access to Blue Flag beaches through improved infrastructure and amenities­.

Speaking at the event, Wessa national coastal coordinator, Robert Slater, said: “We are grateful to have the ongoing support of the Ford Wildlife Foundation for Wessa’s national coastal conservation and education programmes.”

The City was identified as a recipient, based on the existing disabled access to beaches and their commitment to making their Blue Flag beaches usable for all people­.

The sponsored chairs were handed over at an event held on Muizenberg Beach and will be freely available for disabled beachgoers for use at Blue Flag beaches to be determined­.

Philippi police found the body of an 18-yearold woman during a crime prevention operation on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Lance Goliath, says the woman’s body was found at 20:15 at a house in Hanover Park Avenue.

He adds that the woman’s body was found in the lounge of the house, with her hands and feet tied up with ropes and her head covered with a towel and plastic bag.

“A case of murder is being investigated. Police are following up on all leads and an arrest is expected to be made soon. Police are urging residents to come forward with information,” he says.

ocal organisations were among the top winners of this year’s Cultural Awards held on Saturday.

Annually, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport hosts the Cultural Affairs Awards ceremony to recognise and celebrate the cultural, linguistic and heritage excellence in the province.

The occasion is a vital opportunity to proudly showcase the diversity of the province’s cultural landscape. In the heritage category of Most Active Conservation Body, the award went to Marc Turok of the Observatory Civic Association. In the Library category, Best Collaborative Public Library Programme/Project, went to Ottery Public Library. Marlene le Roux, CEO of Artscape, walked away with the Ministerial Award in the section of Outstanding Contribution to the Arts and Disability.

During the keynote address cultural affairs minister Anroux Marais said: “The awards bestowed on deserving nominees provide an opportunity to proudly showcase the assortment of the cultural landscape of the Western Cape and those who work tirelessly to make this possible”.

The annual ceremony is a highlight on the provincial cultural calendar and equips the people of the Western Cape with a sense of pride in their cultural and linguistic heritage. The 2018 Cultural Affairs Awards ceremony followed the Department officially honouring the 10 to 40 years of public service at the 2018 Long Service Awards in Stellenbosch on Friday evening. Marais bestowed awards on 62 departmental officials for their loyalty, commitment and dedication­.

ansdowne resident Geila Wills is a beacon of hope, an infectious character and driven to use her leadership to improve the lives of others.

Wills is the district governor for Lions Club district 410A (Western Cape, Northern Cape and Namibia), where she manages 46 Lions Clubs with over 900 members.

She started as a Kirstenbosch Leo (leadership through experience and opportunity) in service work in 1983. She moved through the ranks becoming the multiple district president for South Africa and Namibia.

She was instrumental in the chartering of the Groote Schuur Lions Club, the first club to have both women and men.

Besides being a district governor, Wills is still an “ordinary Lion”, is on the training team, attends projects and does club visitations. She works full-time and does animal rescue work when able.

Lions Clubs International (LCI) motto, “We Serve”, means that ordinary people, committed to serving people in need, get together and form a Lions Club. The first Lions Club has grown to the largest voluntary humanitarian service organisation in the world, with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries and 45 000 clubs.

“The greatest gift you can give to a community is that of a Lions Club,” says Wills.

She adds that LCI’s core projects are: sight, hunger, environment, diabetes and childhood cancer.

“We also have projects to prevent river blindness and are attempting to eradicate measles. We like to say: ‘Where there is a need there is a Lion or Leo’. Lions projects have provided me with incredible moments – the joy on a child’s face, as a pair of spectacles lets them see clearly for the first time; working with children in homes; raising funds for SA Guide Dogs; cleaning up the environment and planting trees or a senior who goes on an outing for the first time in Geila Wills.

“My goals as district governor are four words: lead, serve, inspire and fun. Lions are leaders in their communities and do take on leadership roles. We serve wherever the need may be. We inspire others and we have fun, while serving those less fortunate.

hen The Drifters swing by later this year, they promise to bring the house down, and you won’t want to miss out.

The Drifters’ lead singer, Ray Lewis, along with his three bandmates, will be drifting to Cape Town in May and they cannot contain their excitement.

In an exclusive interview with People’s Post last year, Lewis said he was “coming home to the motherland” (“Singers’ love, passion infectious”, 9 September).

With the Drifters earning the respect of other groups of the time, Lewis has always looked up to them and is honoured to be a part of their legacy.“As close to perfection as I can get, is what I require from anyone coming into the group,” he says.

It is the art that has kept him on stage for more than four decades now.Along with some of the classics including “Under the Boardwalk”, “There Goes My First Love” and “More Than a Number”, the singers will also bring new material and something for all ages, Lewis promises.

“Our vocals are on point and our dance steps are always first class, and what stands out is the camaraderie in the group – it is very infectious. There isn’t one individual

trying to stand out. We are a group. There is a lot of love on that stage. We pass it on and I believe the audience can feel it too.

“Also, it is important to understand that our faith is our basis and this is a blessed opportunity. This has been afforded to us as a gift from the Lord and we will deliver what the audience needs – a moment of happiness or a moment of thought.

“We believe in boogying and we will boogie on that stage, but those moments of inspiration are through divine intervention.”

The Drifters will be supported by Nur Abrahams and Emo Adams, with backing from Camillo Lombard and band.

Santos forced into draw ANDRÉ CRUYWAGEN

antos were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Glendene in an ABC Motsepe Derby game played in Manenberg on Saturday.

Santos were determined not go down in this grudge match, bearing in mind that they lost to their nemesis in the first round of fixtures.

This meant that Glendene had a psychological advantage over them, but Santos wouldn’t give up with their positive attitude and were determined to overturn their fortunes.

Both teams produced extremely highquality ball skills in the midfield area, with Santos briefly outmanoeuvring their counterparts, but Glendene steadied their ship with a spirited defensive display and counter-attack.

Minenhle Mwape netted for Glendene while Modou Jatta did it for the People’s Team.

The Magic narrowly beat Grassy Park 1-0 in their nail-biting thriller played at Old Mutual Sports Grounds on Friday night.

The visiting team had room for improvement, but failed to capitalise on The Magic’s early struggles.

Lethal Magic striker Damian Warley used his blistering pace to escape Grassy Park’s defence to net the winning goal.

Central unveil new sponsor C

entral Athletics Club unveiled the new title sponsor for their popular 10km road race and 5km fun run at Newlands Cricket Stadium last week.

Central Athletics is a community-based club that attracts members of all abilities from across the province.

According to founder member and club president, Adnaan Mohamed, the club will be hosting the Central Athletics 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run on Sunday 8 April at Newlands Cricket Stadium for the third consecutive year. The event starts at 07:00.

“It is a very challenging task to be able to secure a sponsorship, especially considering the current economic climate we find ourselves in. We are proud to announce that No Finance Cars (NFC) has agreed to come on board as a title sponsor for our race. This is a massive boost to the club. I am positive that NFC will play a huge role in making our race a resounding success,” Mohamed says.

Reza Ebrahim, chairperson of Central Athletics and also the owner of NFC, is the person responsible for securing the sponsorship deal with the national car finance company.

We are faced with unique challenges every year. And this year is no different. We are currently experiencing a water crisis in the Western Cape. It is for this reason that we will be sourcing our water for our race off the grid. That means the water will not be supplied by the City of Cape Town but will rather come from alternative sources.

“In memory of two of our members who tragically passed on last year, we will be awarding special gold medals to the first 200 men and 200 women to cross the finish line.

The medal for the males will be called the Ridwaan Bardien medal and for females it will be called the Rifqah Lutta-Keraan medal. This will add a distinctive air of nostalgia to the race. Both Ridwaan and Rifqah played a huge role in the success of this race in the past. We can proudly say that our race was one of only three races in WPA nominated for the prestigious Race of the Year Award last year. “This year we are expecting around 5000 participants. We are confident that the race will be bigger and better and once again exceed all expectations,” adds Williams.
