DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2015-16 was an especially exciting year for The Park School as we Planted Park’s Future and completed Phase II of the Centennial Capital Campaign for the new KnoppHailpern Science Center. It was the first time in Park’s history that we asked our friends to give to two campaigns at the same time – both the Capital Campaign and the Annual Fund – and the response was tremendous. To the many generous friends of the School who supported Park with gifts – be it of time, talent, or treasure – we express our heartfelt thanks and most sincere gratitude.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2015-16 YEAR INCLUDE: • The $296,630 raised for unrestricted Annual Fund was the third largest Annual Fund campaign in Park’s history. Thank you to everyone who made this possible! • Four successful fundraising challenges, which matched new gifts and pledges to the Capital Campaign: > Science@Park Challenge: Amount raised: $221,224 > Young Alumni Challenge: Amount raised: $13,109 > Class of 1976 Challenge: Amount raised: $11,526 > Year-End Trustee Challenge for Current Parents and Former Trustees: Amount raised: $18,200 • Record giving from the senior class, the Class of 2016, with 14 members making a donation to Park before their graduation. • A large and actively engaged group of volunteers (parents, grandparents, alumni, neighbors, and friends) working on Park’s behalf to ensure the Dual Appeal was a success. • A wonderful groundbreaking ceremony on June 18 for The Knopp-Hailpern Center, during which the final funds for the building itself were raised! • The most successful Park auction ever which grossed more than $174,000. To the many generous friends of the School who supported Park with gifts – be it of time, talent, or treasure – we express our heartfelt thanks and most sincere gratitude. THE KNOPP-HAILPERN C E N T E R : U P D AT E

Members of the Knopp and Hailpern families at last June’s groundbreaking ceremony. (Pictured from L to R: Doris Hailpern McKay ’68, Julie Knopp ’73, Jocelyn Hailpern Jackman ’63, and David Knopp ’81)

A major component of Park’s future facility plans is the construction of The Knopp-Hailpern Science Center. Our original timeline was thrown off last summer due to siting issues. The original proposed building site sits on the very durable bedrock that comprises the Onondaga Escarpment. This discovery has turned into an opportunity to revisit how the building will interact with the campus, and how we might use the campus’s unique geology as a learning experience for our students. The building’s architects, construction company, and building committee have decided that the costs of building on the original site did not justify any benefits derived from being on that site. Instead, the building is going to be constructed some eighty feet closer to the pond area, and our plans have resumed with construction slated to begin this spring. This modest site change is creating design and program opportunities that will make the project even more exciting and beneficial to our students and the community.

All donations made to the Science@Park Capital Campaign will be reported in full after the campaign is completed. Thank you for your support! 6 | ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

The Park School of Buffalo Foundation The Park School of Buffalo Foundation manages the School’s endowment. Members of the Board include alumni, past parents, and friends who help to grow the assets by encouraging all who care about Park’s long term financial health to make a bequest to Park or establish another type of planned gift to benefit the School. Since June 30, 2015, total assets of the Foundation have decreased 8% or $175,632. $102,515 (5%) of this loss is due to fluctuations in the market, offset by $17,446 in earnings on the portfolio. The remaining $73,000 (3%) decrease is due the annual draw as well as other annual expenditures. Park’s total assets at fiscal year end, June 30, 2016, were $1,933,347 million which is down from $2,108,979 in 2015. We are pleased to have just received more than $125,000 in new funds from the Estate of John McDowell ’49 for the Jeannette and Adolphus Cheek Scholarship Fund. Park’s endowment funds are held at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo (CFGB) where they are pooled with more than $350 million in other funds providing our school access to a wide variety of investment vehicles. Within Park’s endowment are individual funds established during the past 40 years to permanently support scholarships and tuition assistance, professional development for faculty, programs benefitting Park’s students and the community, and unrestricted needs. The School is grateful to the generous alumni, parents of alumni, former faculty and others who have established endowment funds to honor Park students, graduates, faculty, and former faculty. These names are now forever associated with The Park School, while at the same time strengthening our community. If you are interested in supporting an existing fund or learning more about Park’s endowment funds, please contact Carolyn Hoyt Stevens ’81, Director of Development, at 716-839-1243 x104 or cstevens@theparkschool.org.
