ITIES should increasingly
consider whether now is the time to switch from an on-street parking program that features metered parking or a combination of metered parking and pay-by-cell phone to a program that requires all parking payments be made by cell phone. Cities can save significant expense including capital and maintenance costs and the costs to collect and account for coinage, plus avoid shrinkage from compromised revenue controls. Capital costs to meter an on-street parking space typically range from $800 to $1,200 for the meter, pole and housing or kiosk, signage, and installation.
