COMMUNITY NEWS Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band is Scotland bound MEDIA RELEASE- The Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band is headed back to Scotland once again to play the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August 2022.

The Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band was one of the first North American non-military pipe bands to be invited to take part in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the first time back in 2014 and then in 2020 it was cancelled due to the pandemic but is once again returning in 2022.

Twenty-five of the band’s pipers and drummers will perform every day for almost a full month at the prestigious events in Scotland.

The Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band has played in recent years with Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney as well as having travelled to places like China, Switzerland and Greece to perform.

Most recently they played in the Port Dover Canada Day parade and the Kincardine Celtic Festival this past weekend.

About 900 performers from around the globe will take part in this year’s tattoo.

The Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to act as ambassadors of Canada, the province of Ontario and the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk

In 2021 the band received a $15,000 grant from the Government of Ontario’s Community Building FundOperating stream. This grant, delivered of 12 months by the Ontario Trillium foundation, helped the band to recover from the impact of the pandemic by retaining staff, enhancing virtual programming and supporting general operating costs. While headquartered in HaldimandNorfolk, the band rents a practice hall in Brantford-Brant and is

active across both communities.

At the time of the grant, Brant MPP Will Bouma commented, “I am pleased that the Paris port Dover Pipe Band is able to use this grant to grow and diversify their offerings. Music and culture from Scotland is deep-rooted in our province and this grant will help to continue to provide support for various ceremonies and service organizations throughout the region.”

COMMUNITY NEWS Library has summer programs for all ages

By Carolina Saenz It’s officially summer and for many families the search is on for activities and programs to keep the kids busy, entertained and engaged. Luckily for Parisians, the County of Brant Public Library has plenty of activities to choose from to keep youth amused and to keep those brains sharp during the summer break.

One of the most exciting offerings is the TD Summer Reading Club, back by popular demand year after year. It’s Canada’s biggest bilingual summer reading program and is offered to kids of all ages, interests and abilities.

Through this summer reading club, kids are encouraged to explore the fun of reading with an end goal of building a lifelong love of reading.

Perhaps the most immediate reward is what the youngsters value the most - the prizes they can win by entering tickets into draws. Children earn tickets based on the number of reading minutes they log online through the Beanstack Tracker App. In

addition to the coveted tickets, children also earn virtual badges for a variety of achievements. Paper trackers are also available at the library, as well As activity notebooks and stickers.

Aside from some cool prizes, the summer reading program has proven to help stop summer slide, which is a loss of skills during the time when students are not in school. These programs are a great way to help maintain academic achievement and improve kids’ reading skills. Recent surveys indicate that 87% of kids read more often or the same amount over the summer and 96% of parents/caregivers agreed that their child maintained or improved their reading skills over the summer.

Kids can read library books or use the Tumblebooks platform to access ebooks, read-along books, graphic novels, audiobooks and more. Prizes range from swim passes to Dairee Delite ice cream coupons, Paris Fair admission passes and books of course.

COMMUNITY NEWS Other activities available for kids, tweens and teens include in-person story time programs; Grab & Go book bags, created by staff with reading materials catered to your needs; Make & Play literacy backpacks, which include a toy, three storybooks and a booklet of early literacy activities; and STEAM literacy tech gear to develop young science skills.

Students in Grades 1-5 can participate in the Read It Summer Literacy Program offered via Zoom where they can get one-on-one reading practice in twice weekly sessions.

Sensory story time is popular for children who are on the autism spectrum or who have multi-sensory needs.

Parents/caregivers participate in the program which consists of a fun-filled, interactive story time followed by open play.

Teens, adults and seniors looking to stay mentally and socially active can part take in the Adult Summer Reading Club, which involves a Summer Book Bingo (available in printed format and online). For those looking to get creative, arts and crafts programs include resin workshops, leatherworking, stamping, card making and wood projects.

If you’re an active individual, check out the historical walking tours to learn about the history of Glen Morris and Mount Pleasant, as well as Historical Scavenger Hunts which offer exiting options for those interested in local history. During August and September there are Edible Wild Plants and Bird Watching adventures available.

Finally, the ongoing coffee hour remains virtual through Zoom on Wednesdays at 10 am. Designed for adults 55+, it provides a great place to make new friends, hear what’s going on at the library and catch up on the latest news.

Monsters in Paris this weekend!

A very large crowd pleaser is returning to the Paris Fairgrounds this weekend.

It will be loud; it will be fun, and it will be entertaining! Throttle Out Productions is bringing the Monster Truck show back to Paris for a Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon show. The Paris Agricultural Society (PAS) is very excited to welcome the community back for special events at the Paris Fairgrounds,” said Cheryl Muir, manager of the PAS. “We did hold the fair in 2021 and it was great to see everyone, but it was held under quite stressful circumstances,” she added.

Proceeds from the Monster Truck show will be dedicated to a specific fund to upgrade the hydro and lighting at the track to enhance the safety and the quality of future events. The ultimate smash and bash event will feature Train Wreck, Sabotage, Anger Management, Rat Nasty, Loud & Dirty, Psycho Pat, and the True North ride truck for spectators who want to get up close and personal. COMMUNITY NEWS Nation-wide Rogers outage has people scrambling locally The Paris Independent, like many other businesses, were hard to reach yesterday as a nation-wide network outage impacted phone and internet service.

Some stores in Paris were accepting cash only as interact debit and etransfer services were offline, while other businesses were able to accept credit card payments.

The County of Brant Public Library offered Wi-fi at all branches and computers were free to use on a first served basis.

While most people felt like they travelled back to the 1990s, the outage also highlighted the local generosity of community members who reportedly offered to pay for people’s purchases at various businesses in town as some people didn’t have enough cash on them.

Friday’s outage left millions of Canadians without internet and cellular service, while also disrupting government services and payment systems.

The outage began early Friday morning and as of press deadline Friday night, the network was still down.

It was an interesting day as Paris Independent volunteers scrambled to use cellular data, hot spots and thumb drives to share and transport the pages to one another.

Thanks to modern technology, at least that which was available to us, we were able to produce this week’s online paper!

COMMUNITY NEWS Stay safe and be water smart this summer MEDIA RELEASE COUNTY OF BRANT: Children and families love to spend time around the water. To make sure everyone has fun, it’s important to know how to stay safe and be water smart.

Here are some water safety facts: -Children under five, young men and older adults have the highest drowning risk -Teenage brains can encourage risk-taking behaviour -Drowning can occur in is little as a few centimetres of water -Drowning is fast and silent -Bathtub drownings occur every year among young children and older adults.

County of Brant firefighters were on the Grand River last month fine-tuning river rescue skills. The Paris and Onondaga Stations typically respond to 2-3 river rescue calls a year.

COMMUNITY NEWS Love is Love: New book project aims to promote acceptance and inclusion

By Casandra Turnbull A volunteer-based organization is taking a traditional approach to promote inclusion and acceptance through the launch of a new book project - coming a Little Free Library near you, soon.

With a specific focus on inspiring acceptance, volunteers from The Bridge Brant hand selected 300 books representing 2SLGBTQ+ children, youth and families. They will be distributed through Brantford and Brant County communities free of charge through little free libraries and some childcare services. The Bridge received a $5,000 City of Brantford Community Foundation Grant to fund the project.

“The idea for the book project came up a few years ago because we wanted children and youth to have access to books that may represent them and/or their families,” said Tara Buchanan, a Bridge volunteer and one of the lead organizers of the book project. “Representation is so important because we live in a cisheteronormative society, meaning that society is set up in ways that naturalize and normalize heterosexuality and binary genders.

2SLGBTQ+ people are then left to be seen as abnormal or deviant,” explained Buchanan, adding, “Our goal is to challenge that.”

Bridge volunteers will be placing books representing the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Little Free Libraries around Brantford and Brant County in the next few weeks.

The Bridge partnered with Christine Wildman during the pandemic to conduct a research study.

The participants embodied a wide range of backgrounds, but despite strength and resilience, there were common underlining feelings of exclusion, invisibleness and lack of safety and equitable treatment by service providers.

“Equity would mean safety, visibility, acceptance, inclusion, which all lead to a feeling of sense of belonging,” said Buchanan and that is what this book project intends to

instill in young readers.

The books are targeted for readers up to age 14 and include a variety of reading levels from board books to novels. There are about 25-30 different titles. Some are about what makes a family, for example, ‘Love Makes a Family,’ by Sophie Beer depicts many different families doing things together.

‘Mommy, Momma and Me,’ by Leslea Newman is about a child that has two mothers.

“What every child should know is about social justice issues and community care, inspiring acceptance, social cooperation, and action. Ultimately, we aim to queer up the city of Brantford and County of Brant to provide presentation of 2SLGBTQ+ children, youth and families.”

The Bridge is a grass roots group that aims to identify and address inequities experienced by local 2SLGBTQ+ populations. It is voluntary based and generally underfunded, said Buchanan. She was first introduced to the group about 12 years ago, shortly after its 2009 inception.

She recalls attending the first-ever pride flag raising in Brantford and listening to Bridge volunteers speak and something struck an immediate chord.

“I had grown up in Brantford and knew what it would have meant to me as a teenager to see myself represented in my community. Seeing that flag flying brought tears to my eyes. I knew I wanted to get involved so I talked to them right after the event,” said Buchanan.

Society has come a long way since Buchanan was a teenager dealing with difficult emotions and feeling like there were few, if not any, places she felt safe and included. “I felt very alone and like this city wasn’t meant for me,” she shared.

Slowly but surely, the tide is changing, and acceptance is trending. The first pride flag ceremony took place in Brantford in 2011 and the first one in Brant County in 2019.

The County raised a flag at council chambers earlier this year in recognition of Transgender Awareness Day. School boards and service providers are starting to address issues of acceptance and equality, but there’s a long way to go, she added.

“There are some great groups and drop-in programs running, but I also know that many youths still feel isolated. I would like to see communities where everyone feels truly valued for their gifts and their authentic selves where we can convene around what we share and celebrate our differences,” she concluded.

Craft breweries with character: The rise of the farm brewery Travelling Pint

Farmland is incredibly important to our communities and with more farm breweries popping up in our area I am digging all of these farm-toglass experiences I am having this summer! What does it mean to be a farm brewery?

Close your eyes, trust me I’m a beer blogger and picture being on a picturesque working farm, drinking delicious, handcrafted beer created from mainly local ingredients and perhaps throw in a chicken or two cruising around, a rare flying squirrel or paw-paw tree. Farm breweries help preserve local farmland, use seasonal local ingredients from surrounding farms, and create uniquely local beer, plus there has to be something said for the calming views they provide and the good they do for your mind.

Nothing screams Farm Brewery more than some background guests at Meuse Brewing.

These are niche operations: Provincially, there is a designation between Brewer, Micro Brewer, and Brew Pub but many municipalities now have designations for Farm Breweries.

For example, Norfolk County updated its by-laws in 2019 to allow for breweries to operate on agriculturally zoned properties.

And though the farm brewery is subject to making sure all beers produced shall be made from

crops grown primarily by the farm operation and there is a limit to the amount of water you are allowed to use (though these limits are very high and going over a certain amount simply require permits from the Ministry of Environment). There is no limit on how much liquid gold (beer) you are allowed to produce annually.

T R AV E L Mdina – Malta’s best secret Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of an ancient Roman city Well, it’s hard to believe but my time is quickly winding down in Malta. It has been an exceptional experience and one I hope to repeat in the not-too-distant future.

I think by far my favourite spot to explore in Malta is Mdina.

This fortified town is not too large and perfect for just wandering through. While I’ve visited a couple of times already, this time I paid particular attention to the doorways. There are approximately 300 residents in this town and aside from the occasional bride arriving at the church, residents are the only ones allowed to have cars inside the gates. Each door seems to have its own unique life, which I’m sure reflects the residents.

But even here graffiti has been a problem. Dates scratched into the soft limestone are from all eras, 1889 being the earliest one I found.

T R AV E L This visit was even hotter than the last time, and we took it at a much slower pace. The view overlooking the city below is always breathtaking and Carol and Steve both enjoyed this. We had a lovely lunch at Coogi’s, which Carol decided was the best pizza she’s ever had.

After lunch we headed over to the entrance and took a horse drawn ride through the town of Rabat.

Rabat is a Semitic word meaning either “fortified town” or “suburb” and is a town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of approximately 15,000. It adjoins the ancient capital city of Mdina.

In Roman times, the site of Mdina and Rabat was occupied by the town of Melita, the island’s capital.

Honey was a very big business during this time and Melita means the “land of honey”.

During the Arab occupation of Malta (870 to 1090), the area of Mdina was reduced by moving the southern wall; as a result, portions of Mdina became part of Rabat. There are many Roman ruins here, including a partially restored Roman villa that houses a museum of Roman antiquities. Extensive early Christian catacombs, lying beneath the town, contain engraved crosses and agape tables—rock-hewn round surfaces that were used for funerary rituals.

Rabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul and of St. Agatha. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unhygienic to bury the dead in the city. Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of an ancient Roman city. St. Paul was said to have been shipwrecked on Malta for three months enroute to his trial in Rome. He was housed in the catacombs and is credited with bringing Christianity to the islands.

While early May was unseasonably cool and wet, everyone is now talking about the unusually hot weather.

Temperatures have hovered in the high 30s (38-39C) for a couple weeks now. Carol and I were excited when it dropped to 32C yesterday and decided to take one of the bus tours around Malta.

The Blue Bus does a northern loop of Malta and we decided that we’d try the Golden Bay beach. This is one of the few sandy beaches in Malta, so with our swimsuits under our sundresses off we went. The tour is very informative but….the buses are not air conditioned and while 32C was lower than it had been, it was still very warm. We did 2 hours of the tour to reach Golden Bay and jumped off there. It’s a short walk to the beach and we were greeted by a sea of coloured umbrellas almost completely covering it!

However, there were so many stones in the water, we couldn’t walk into the sea. A quick splash to cool our arms and it was off to lunch we went.

Thursday we are off to the Hypogeum, a first for Carol and a repeat for me. This site is truly awe inspiring and seeing it repeatedly is not a hardship.

Saturday we fly to Rome!

COMMUNITY NEWS Accessible public washrooms open downtown

The new public washrooms opened downtown Paris this week. Located on the pedestrian access named after Lisa Dalpe, beside County of Brant Council Chambers, the new accessible washrooms are gender neutral and will be open daily between 8 am to 8 pm. Discussion has been in the works for several years now surrounding the possibility of downtown facilities, open to the public, especially since a tourism continues to grow in the County of Brant. Work on the washrooms started in October 2021.

Deadline approaching for WIW of Paris Scholarship applications The deadline is fast approaching for the Women Inspiring Women’s Institute 2022 Scholarship Application.

This award is open to recent high school graduates and mature students. Applicants are asked to submit a typed essay, 500 words or less, entitled: “Brant Women Who Inspire Us.” Explain how a woman, or group of women, from Brant County, Brantford or Six Nations (living or deceased) has inspired you.

Explain how they inspire you and why you are inspired by them. The essay cannot be about a member of your family.

This year the WIW is offering two $500 scholarships to students attending post secondary institutes.

Applications are due by 11:59 pm on July 15. They can be emailed to WIW.WI.scholarship@gmail.com.
