COMMUNITY NEWS PARIS’ FIRST BORN OF 2022 ARRIVES TWO WEEKS EARLY

By Casandra Turnbull She was a surprise; from the moment she made her presence known to the moment she entered this world.

Brooklyn Rose Das Neves was born on January 1, 2022 at 1:53 pm at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She is Paris’ newest citizen and is crowned Paris’ New Year’s Baby 2022.

Weighing in a 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 20 inches in length, Brooklyn is the third child for Tania & Jerry Das Neves. The family moved to Paris’ north end over a year ago.

“We were shocked when we found out that we were expecting. This was definitely a surprise pregnancy for us – we already have two children and weren’t trying for more,” explained Tania. Proud sisters Alivia, 7 and Abbigail, 4 are thrilled to welcome a new sister.

“They are still adjusting to having a new baby in the house and like to play mommy with their new sister!”

Shocked by the prospect of having a third child, the thought of delivering a New Year’s baby was far from Tania and Jerry’s minds. In fact, the first order of business was finding out if they would welcome another daughter or a son. “We were

eager to find out,” said Tania. “I was almost for sure we were having a boy just cause of the different pregnancy symptoms.”

Turns out that assumption was incorrect, and so was her January 15th due date! Brooklyn had other plans. She came two weeks ahead of schedule when Tania developed gestational diabetes and had to be induced on New Year’s Day. It was only then that the Das Neves family really started to realize they might just welcome the New Year’s baby.

“This time around it was a very quick labour, compared to my other children. We didn’t have time to get the epidural, everything just flew by and bam – we had our third daughter,” said Tania, who wanted to thank Pam from Cambridge Midwives and Dr. Mendlowitz, as well as the nursing staff at Cambridge Memorial for the safe delivery and excellent care.

Tania said she was also grateful to have her husband by her side – and he even got to cut the umbilical cord, something neither were sure would happen with the ever-changing Covid restrictions in hospitals.

Brooklyn’s quick arrival earned her the New Year’s Baby title!

COMMUNITY NEWS VOLUNTEERS BRING OUTDOOR RINKS TO PARIS

By Casandra Turnbull If you love to skate, have some time on your hands this winter and want to give back to the community, you might want to consider following in the footsteps of Valade Custom Carpentry and the Paris Firefighters’ Club.

The local company, owned and operated by Matt Valade, is bringing joy to area families this winter by volunteering time to install and maintain an outdoor ice rink at Axton Park.

Matt, along with Robert Carter, RJ Carter and Chad McLeod, provided and installed the plastic liner for the 30’ by 80’ rink located on Whitlaw Way. The County of Brant provided the lumber to secure the rink and the fire department is going to fill it with their pump trucks. It will be Valade Custom Carpentry’s responsibility to maintain the ice throughout the winter, however, the county will conduct regular tests on it to determine if it’s safe to open or close, based on ice quality.

“I have young kids myself, so I thought I’d be willing to take on the responsibility of building and maintaining the rink. I remember playing for hours as a kid and I guess I just wanted a safe place for the kids in our area to be able to get outside and be active,” said Matt, who approached the county about a month ago to get the project started. The easy part was constructing the shell of the rink, the difficult part will be the months ahead when they must maintain the rink through the various elements of a Canadian winter! The Valade Custom Carpentry crew will take turns each evening to clear the snow off the ice and repair any divots and bumps to try and keep the surface as smooth as possible. Matt is even working to build a make-shift Zamboni to flood the ice.

Other volunteers have also committed to try and build outdoor rinks at Syl Apps Community Centre, Mt. Pleasant Park and Sunny Hill Park, said Kathy Ballantyne, Director of Parks and Facilities for the County of Brant. “Outdoor rinks are great activities if the weather co-operates.

Southern Ontario winters are very unpredictable, but we do hope the rinks will open at some point this winter,” said Ballantyne, who also advised the county will maintain the status of the rinks through their social media accounts.

“It’s really all about the kids.”

Meanwhile, over at Syl Apps, the Paris Firefighter’s Club is working diligently to prepare the outdoor rink on the baseball diamond. While they’ve created and maintained this rink for the past 3-4 years, it was a actually a long-standing tradition started over 35 years ago by resident and retired Paris Arena Manager Jack Davis.

The number of firefighters required to maintain the rink ranges from year-to-year but usually there is a solid group of at least 10 volunteers, explained Tyler Brown. Trying to ensure they continue the good work started by Jack Davis, Brown said, “It took a little trial and error, but I think we have a pretty good system now and after we build up a solid base, we just need to add a little water from time to time to smooth out the bumps.” Like the Axton Park rink, the county will regularly test the condition of the ice and post its status through social media.

“It’s really all about the kids and giving them access to safe ice to skate on. With the recent provincial announcement regarding Covid

restrictions, I think this year it’s as important as ever to try and provide a place to play,” added Brown, who wanted to remind users that it is important that you do not step onto the ice until it is posted that it’s safe to do so. Any premature use could damage the surface and cause the process to start over again.

COUNTY NEWS COUNCIL APPROVES 1.81% TAX INCREASE

Reports local economy recovering well from impacts of pandemic

By Casandra Turnbull County of Brant residents were facing a proposed 4.1% tax hike going into the 2022 Budget deliberations, but after some provincial funding announcements surrounding infrastructure, residents will now only see a 1.81% median tax increase this year, below inflation projections for the fourth year in a row. That’s an average increase of $55.34 to the average median homeowner (assessed at $363,000).

That provincial announcement comes from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund, which allocated $1 billion to be distributed to small communities looking to build and repair roads, bridges, and water /wastewater systems. Brant’s portion of this funding is $2.45 million.

Municipalities like the County of Brant only receive 9% of all taxes collected; the remaining 47% comes from federal funds and 44% from provincial funds.

The County must take that 9% and divide it up amongst local infrastructure projects and must do so wisely because they are responsible for covering 50% of local infrastructure needs. These infrastructure services include roads and bridges, arenas and facilities, trails, libraries, Brant transit and paramedic services.

Money coming in from property

taxes, grants and subsidies/user fees help balance the operating budget and capital budget. In layman’s terms, your operating budget is like your utility costs to keep the household running, your capital budget is your major household expenses like repairs and renovations. Coming out with a balanced budget can be difficult, especially when you’re dealing with inflation and an unstable economy during a global pandemic.

"Inflation has hit governments the way it has households. Since I started on council the cost for things like road salt, insurance, fuel and equipment has surged,” explained Paris Councillor Marc Laferriere, “but we have been able to enhance services and infrastructure while keeping tax increases below inflation by finding savings, having strong businesses that have weathered the pandemic better than most municipalities and through our residential and industrial growth."

The county reports the local economy is recovering well from the impacts of Covid-19. There were 16 new business in the county in 2021 with a net increase in new jobs estimated at 250 -300. The county now has the responsibility of transitioning out of the Covid-19 pandemic while trying to keep up with the demand in services for this

growing community.

Other areas of focus for 2022 include the continuation of Brant Safe Streets through automated speed enforcement, radar signs and speed humps as well as Gypsy Moth Treatment to combat outbreak areas – work that began in 2021 with the treatment of 700 acres of county forested land.

Council also approved funding for a new fire station to be built in Paris’ north end but won’t be operational until the end of 2023 or early 2024.

Below is a breakdown of how funds will be allocated in Paris to maintain or enhance local infrastructure/services.

Capital Roads Projects -$1.65 million will be invested to upgrade Market Street between Silver & Capron Streets -$1.5 million for reconstruction of Grand River St N -$5 million for improvements on King Edward St at Falkland -$4.1 million for the Gurney roundabout on Rest Acres Rd – Powerline Rd to North of 403 -$1 million for road reconstruction following sewer upgrades on Race Street.

TRIBUTE TO LATE PARIS ARTIST If you’ve picked up a painted rock in Paris, there’s a good chance it was an original painted by the late Clarisse Robertson. The lifelong Paris resident was a fantastic artist and an avid supporter of Little Free Libraries (pictorialized in the sketch). Fondly known as Horbie J Farnsworth, she had an unwavering love for this community. She passed away on April 4, 2021. Resident and Paris Councillor Steve Howes memorialized her with this sketch, his first of 2022.

As we settle in for another temporary lockdown, consider painting your own rock and hiding it in the community for another resident to find. It’s an excellent way to spread joy – and keep Horbie’s spirit alive.

S P O R T S LOCAL ATHLETE’S TRIP TO SPECIAL OLYMPIC WORLD WINTER GAMES DELAYED Richard Ward prepares for another year of training ahead of 2023 Games in Russia

By Casandra Turnbull Richard Ward should have been off to Kazan, Russia this month to represent Canada in the Special Olympics World Winter Games. Instead, he will spend another year training, working out and eating healthy so he can stay in the best physical shape as possible. The delay would have upset any athlete full of adrenaline and ready to compete – but not Richard. It’s not his style. He’s laid back, yet very focussed and determined to prepare even more. This outlook really embodies the essence of his personality, said Lisa Ward-Merner, Richard’s sister.

“The delay was a hard one to tell him – he was a little disappointed. But he knows it’s still happening and being so positive, he looks at it as another year to train,” she said.

Fifty-six-year-old Richard’s World pursuit started at the Sault Ste. Marie Provincials where he performed well in the snowshoeing event and earned a spot at the Canadian Winter Games in Thunder Bay. His family said they were beyond proud to see him qualify for Canadians so imagine their excitement when Richard won the race and took the top spot on the podium in Thunder Bay. His siblings Lisa and Mark Ward were there cheering him on the entire time.

“There were so many coaches along the way.

Wonderful Special Olympic coaches that have done so much for Richard over the years.

We are so thankful to the coaches, volunteers, and Community Living – all these people have helped, and Richard couldn’t have done it with out them.”

While Richard returned home with some new hardware, it wasn’t until almost a year later in January 2021 before he would learn he made Team Canada and would be advancing to the World Games.

“He was so ecstatic,” said Lisa, who added they did have a small family celebration, trying to keep in line with pandemic restrictions. “He received an official letter in the mail with a congratulations box that included a Team Canada shirt,” she added. And Richard’s take on the news? “I’m so excited. I can hardly wait to meet new friends,” he said, adding he hopes to win another medal for his collection.

times a week. Team Canada provided him with home workout equipment, which has gone a long way in helping him maintain his physical strength.

He spends a lot of time walking and jogging to keep up his endurance and speed. In his spare time, when he’s not working at Walter Gretzky Municipal Golf Course, Richard enjoys watching science fiction movies.

Lisa didn’t want to centre out any one specific coach because like the old analogy, it takes a village. “There were so many coaches along the way.

Wonderful Special Olympic coaches that have done so much for Richard over the years. We are so thankful to the coaches, volunteers, and Community Living – all these people have helped, and Richard couldn’t

have done it with out them.”

Lisa also plays an important role in Richard’s journey to the World Olympic Games. She is the liaison between Richard and Team Canada officials. She logs his training regiments and nutrition habits, and even cooks healthy meals, freezes them, and drives them to Richard. Lisa lives in Zurich Township but comes to Brantford often to help her brother. Mark, who lives in Paris, also spends time looking after Richard and providing any support he needs. It’s really a combined effort of all three siblings who’ve spent the better half of their adult years caring for one another.

The Paris Independent The Ward siblings lost both their parents early on in life, with Keith and Anita Ward both passing away in the 1980s. Lisa and Mark took on the responsibility of ensuring Richard had a good life.

“Life has been a bit of a challenge, but all three of us stuck together and worked hard and made sure life was as good as it could be. I know my parents would be proud.”

In fact, it was not long after their parents passed away that Lisa encouraged Richard to get reinvolved with sports and the Special Olympics. It was a nod to their parents who were also very athletic, particularly dad Keith, whom Lisa feels Richard inherited his athleticism and speed. So, Richard rediscovered his childhood passion for track and field and even qualified for Provincials and Canadians in various track and field events. Then he discovered swimming.

After many attempts to qualify, he finally earned a position on Team Canada following the provincial games, but the Canadian games were cancelled due to Covid. “He was over the moon happy to qualify in swimming,” said Lisa. For now, Richard is just happy to focus on his training.

Richard already had the snowshoes on – out training and doing what he loves best.

As for Lisa and Mark, they look forward to 2023 when they can all travel together to Kazan, Russia to watch Richard compete. Lisa’s husband, Marty, also plans to make the trip to support Richard.

“I just love the Olympics and the atmosphere. I can’t wait until he can walk into that stadium at opening ceremonies and represent Canada. That will be a wonderful moment for us because it is a huge deal,” she said.

Lisa also wanted to take the opportunity to thank all their

friends and family who have been following Richard’s successes and encourages them to watch out for Richard at the 2023 World Games.

“People just gravitate to Richard because he is a happy, easy-going guy. I really think people can learn from Richard. She just brings a sense of happiness and hope to the world.”

Richard is one of over 2,000 athletes from over 100 nations who will compete in Kazan, Russia in 2023.

COMMUNITY NEWS Energy+ gives back to local communities MEDIA RELEASE – Energy+ and its team of employees stepped up in 2021 and distributed over $72,000 in corporate and employee donations, community sponsorships, and post-secondary awards.

The local hydro utility, which serves 68,000 customers in the County of Brant, areas around Brantford, the City of Cambridge and the Township of North Dumfries, surpassed corporate targets established for 2021.

"At Energy+, one of the most tangible ways we live out our Core Values is through support for community partners where we live and work.

Despite the ongoing pandemic and workplace gathering restrictions, our team found new and creative ways to keep our corporate fundraising fresh and fun," said Ian Miles, Energy+ President and CEO. “I am very proud of our employees, who respond with amazing generosity year after year."

Last year, Energy+ and its employees generously raised funds for several organizations in our communities, including: • $45,934 was directed to the United Way of Waterloo Region Communities and the United Way of Brant from generous employee/board members' pledges, a corporate matching program, a successful online Silent Auction, and a socially distanced employee hike.

• $10,000 was donated to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital for new equipment and St. Joseph Lifecare Foundation to renovate a hospice room to accommodate bariatric patients at The Stedman Community Hospice.

• $5,000 helped fund three post-secondary students pursuing electrical-related studies at Conestoga College and the University of Waterloo.

• $5,791 in corporate sponsorships and in-kind gifts

went to many non-profit organizations that support local communities' health, safety, and child and youth development.

• $4,000 was collected from the team's Casual Days for Haven House, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Cambridge Shelter, Nutrition for Learning, St. Monica House, Langs Farm, Lisaard House, Send 'em Off Smiling, Breast Cancer Society, Salvation Army and the local SPCAs. • Fifteen employees and family members volunteered their time on a Saturday morning to dig a new Micro-forest at a local school in partnership with Sustainable Waterloo Region. A $2,000 corporate donation will be used to continue the pilot project in 2022.

Flux Brewing Co. is located in Scotland, ON and in the last year and a half I have had the privilege to watch grow from the installation of tanks and opening during a pandemic to flourishing and successfully celebrating their one-year anniversary this past August. Their future is as bright and active as their beer, trust me!

Flux is family-founded and located in a former horse barn that's eloquently transformed into a brewery & taproom that pours some of the tastiest beer in the area. Flux aims to produce prime craft beers and create an experience connecting location & community and I'd say they're nailing it!

I love sitting at the bar, and I will never take that small luxury for granted after Covid took that privilege away for a year and a half. Bar stools are more like inclusive social clubs, a great chance for conversation and if you’re travelling, talking to the bartender is a great way to get the inside scoop on favorite local restaurants, hikes, experiences, and even other breweries.

Local receives Young Brewer of the Year Recently awarded New Brewery of the Year, Flux offers many sexy hop-forward beers that please the IPA crowd, but their other beers are not to be ignored. All-star head brewer, Kelsey Desnoyers, has a great talent for brewing beer and with her favouring malt-forward beers this brewery makes both ends of the beer spectrum extremely well. Kelsey also received Young Brewer of the Year from the Canadian Brewers Choice Awards and her promising career in beer is just beginning.

THE BEAUTIFUL OLD POST OFFICE THAT WAS ONCE A FOCAL POINT

In 1900 a great fire devastated much of downtown Paris. In order to kick start the rebuilding and revitalization of downtown the Federal Government approved the building of a new Post Office. This beautiful new post office and customs building had a clock tower and fountain added in 1913. The Post Office remained a focal point of downtown for over 60 years until it was no longer practical and had to be demolished in 1962.

H E A LT H N E W S HOPE FOR HEALTHCARE CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS Funds will go towards new radiology equipment at the Willett MEDIA RELEASE: Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) Foundation is thrilled to announce that the Hope for Healthcare holiday campaign has surpassed the $150,000 goal!

Kari Wilson, Executive Director of the BCHS Foundation says “we are incredibly appreciative of our donors and for donations of all denominations that help us continue to invest together to reimagine health care in our community. We are exceptionally grateful to all our supporters for helping us to invest in our local healthcare system.”

The funds raised as part of the Hope for Healthcare campaign will support the Emergency Department (ED) redevelopment project at the BCHS, which includes the purchase of a much needed second CT Scanner and will invest in radiology equipment for the Willett, Paris.

“We are thrilled that thanks to the generosity of our community, including our matching Hope for Healthcare donor Massilly North America who contributed an incredible $75,000, the campaign raised over $275,000 for the BCHS Foundation”, says Wilson.

The BCHS Foundation is working to raise $8 million for the Emergency Department redevelopment including new equipment, and $350,000 for the radiology upgrade required at the Willett, which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

The Willett Urgent Care Centre currently has one multi-purpose radiology (x-ray) room that provides outpatient imaging services. The current diagnostic equipment was installed in 2004 and is aging, it needs technological upgrades to expand the range and number of exams that can be conducted. This upgrade for the Willett, including the purchase of new x-ray equipment will cost approximately $350,000 and is critical to serve the needs of the growing community.

By Carolina Saenz Whatever your resolutions for this new year may be, there is a place in town that is sure to help you achieve your goals.

The County of Brant Public Library, located downtown on William Street, is a gem for all locals to explore. Offering programs and services for the whole family from book clubs to crafts and workshops, everyone is sure to find something that suits their needs. As we settle into another long winter, why not cozy-up with a good read?

The library’s CEO Kelly Bernstein understands the importance of offering a wide range of services. “We want to offer things for the public to do always but especially right now,” Bernstein says. With many programs offered virtually as well as in person, locals of all ages are encouraged to check out the wide variety of services available. With five branches in Brant County, all operating from one central system, books and resources are shared and can be transferred to your branch of

choice within two days.

Adult programs available are now open for registration online, by phone or in person.

One of these programs is the Virtual Coffee Hour program for seniors (self-defined!) who meet weekly on Wednesdays for an hour of virtual coffee or tea.

Starting on January 12th at 10:00am, participants can access the meetings via zoom or telephone and topics discussed range from gardening to games and writing. It is a great opportunity to have casual conversations, meet new people, and even hear from guest speakers.

For those looking to enjoy a healthier lifestyle through delicious food, The Veganuary Series will be held on January 11th, 18th, and 25th at 7 p.m.

Learn what it means to be ‘vegan’, how to get started, and get inspired to try something new.

With live cooking demonstrations, participants will learn how to make vegan snacks and desserts.

An important event coming up on January 27th is One Book One Brant. Celebrating its 17th

year in 2022, this program promotes Canadian literature by choosing one author and encouraging the community to read the book together. This year, “Black Water” by David A. Robertson is the official selection. Read the book and learn about Robertson’s incredible journey and the reclaiming of his Indigenous identity. With many copies available for everyone, make sure to grab your copy, join the virtual book club or sign up for the virtual author visit coming up on March 27th at 1:30 p.m.

The Paris Independent And speaking of celebrated authors, on Family Literacy Day this January 27th, Sara General, author of “We Give Our Thanks” is giving a presentation. Recordings of this will be available on the library’s YouTube channel. A colourful book and lyrical text celebrate how gratitude brings us closer to all of our relations, including the land, the waters, the medicines, and other beings in the natural world.

For adults looking to get creative, the Art Exploration Series starting on January 19th includes workshops to make crafts such as paper wreaths, learning to knit, making a bird feeder, and even becoming more mindful through meditation and movement. These are held online, through YouTube, and registration is available with access to supplies on a first come, first served basis.

If in need of a fun night for the whole family, weekly trivia nights are starting on January 13th to March 31st at 7:30 p.m. and offer the perfect opportunity to test your knowledge about movies, animals, music, food, history, geography, and lots more. Bond as a family, compete, or simply enjoy an interactive night with new people.

Moving on to children’s programs, Paris mommas, rejoice! From reading challenges for school aged children and teens to arts and crafts, and even coding programs, the library is the best resource for both education and entertainment.

Virtual storytimes are held weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays, as well as family virtual storytimes that share interactive stories and songs for little ones.

Read & Rhyme is an 8-weekprogram held on Thursdays at 11 a.m. that teaches interactive rhymes. Program kits will be available for pick up and they provide rhyme props and mini books. OPP NEWS BRIEFS RASH OF BREAK AND ENTERS IN PARIS

Vehicles and businesses targeted MULTIPLE VEHICLE ENTRIES IN DUNDAS STREET AREA OF PARIS On Thursday December 30, 2021, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Brant County Detachment received multiple vehicle entry and theft reports in the Dundas Street West area of Paris, County of Brant. Between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., an unknown suspect attended the driveways of multiple addresses and gained entry to several unlocked vehicles. The suspect removed tools, small appliances and vehicle documents located inside the vehicles. The suspect arrived and departed the area in a pickup truck, possibly with a diesel engine (see picture below).

On Thursday December 30, 2021 members of the Brant County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a reported break and enter at a business on Grand River Street North in the County of Brant.

The entry was discovered when employees attended in the morning. Police have determined the suspect forced entry to the business at approximately 4:16 a.m. on the same date. Nothing was reported stolen.

The suspect is observed on security video leaving the scene in a pickup truck with a snow plow attached to the front. Pictures of the vehicle and the suspect are attached to this release.

On Friday December 31, 2021, and again on Sunday January 2, 2022, Brant OPP members responded to mischief complaints at the Green Lane Sports Complex on Green Lane in the County of Brant. Unknown suspects broke into an electrical room, caused damage to a storage room and started a fire at a separate area.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident should immediately contact the Brant County OPP at 1888-310-1122.

On Saturday January 1, 2022, Brant OPP members responded to several mischief complaints in the area of Broadway Street and William Street in the County of Brant. Unknown suspects tampered with a vehicle and caused damage to both private and county owned properties. Police are continuing to investigate. MULTIPLE MISCHIEF CALLS ON BROADWAY AND WILLIAM STREETS

OPP conclude Festive RIDE campaign The Ontario Provincial Police concluded its annual Festive RIDE campaign on January 2, 2022, having charged 655 drivers with impaired driving.

Over the 46-day campaign, OPP officers worked 24/7, conducting 8,370 RIDE events across the province.

Over and above the charges, officers issued 236 Warn Range suspensions to drivers whose roadside breath test registered 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The OPP would like to thank citizens for making 3,147 calls to police to report suspected impaired

drivers during the annual campaign. The OPP also thanks all those who stepped up as designated drivers or took other measures to ensure family and friends did not get behind the wheel while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Drivers are reminded that the OPP conducts RIDE events throughout the year on roads, trails and waterways. Citizens are encouraged to continue reporting suspected impaired drivers to police. By doing so, you could be saving a life.

The OPP Festive RIDE Campaign ran from November 18 to January 2.
