COMMUNITY NEWS Paris Terry Fox run returns this September

By Casandra Turnbull Terry Fox once said, “I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.”

Even though cancer prevented him from completing his run, he ultimately accomplished what he set out to do. Over 40 years after his famous trek across most of Canada, Canadians still honour his memory and desire to raise awareness for cancer research by participating in the annual Terry Fox Run. Terry has become a Canadian folklore of sorts, and his drive

and determination are still felt here in Paris, Ontario, some 42 years after he ran through this town during his Marathon of Hope.

“Terry was not a quitter, he didn’t give up, he just ran out of time.

All of us are the time that Terry didn’t have,” says Kiley Cruickshank, one of the lead organizers of the Paris Terry Fox Run, which takes place on September 18.

She, along with her sister-in-law Melanie Chmelik, were handed the ‘coordinator torch’ from Mary Crozier nine years ago. Mary was

the face behind the Paris Terry Fox run for many, many years.

She delivered the reigns to Cruickshank and Chmelik who share her vision and tenacity for keeping Terry’s memory alive locally. It takes a team to organize an event of this magnitude and Cruikshank acknowledges there are many members of the community who have participated and volunteered for decades, paving the way for the success of the event year after year.

“My first participation sticker I have is from 1990, but I’m sure I started before that,” she shared.

“My Dad has been a local volunteer for over 30 years, so it has always been a family cause and tradition. We have now recruited our husbands and children.”

Cruikshank said her family became involved because they felt it was important to help carry on Terry’s legacy and to show their kids Terry Fox is a hero for so many reasons; his courage, determination, compassion and athleticism, to name a few.

“This event honouring Terry is a yearly reminder for our children, for all of us, that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and believe in others.”

This year’s run is the first inperson event since the pandemic hit in 2020. Like most non-profit organizations and fundraising endeavors, the last two years have been a challenge.

“Our donations over the past two years took a hit. We missed the energy that comes with bringing everyone together for the same cause and the hope that we all

have that working together one day we will end this horrible disease.”

The run in Paris typically attracts around 100 participants and usually raises around $10,000 annually. Organizers hope with the growth in town over the last couple years that attendance numbers will rise this year, especially as people are eager to return to some normalcy and attend events supported prepandemic.

“We have many families sign up as a team or as groups, some with shirts made as they are running in memory of a loved one. We have all been touched by cancer and this day brings us all together because of Terry and the dream he had to have us all be a part of the cure.”

So, mark your calendars for September 18 and you too can be a part of Terry’s legacy. The event, whether you choose to run it, walk it or stroll it, begins at 11 am at Paris District High School.

You can register online or in advance at the school at 10 am.

This year’s route will be adjusted due to construction on Market Street. Regardless, the 5k entire

route will be accessible for everyone to participate and for those who feel athletic, you can loop through twice to double your distance and maybe even double your pledges!

“Terry’s goal 42 years ago was to raise $1 for every Canadian.

We know that Paris can do this,” said Cruikshank, urging people to put out a challenge to friends and local businesses to register a team and fundraise to give hope to a future where cancer doesn’t impact so many lives.

Terry’s goal to raise $1 for every Canadian would have equated to $24.17 million in 1980 - a goal he accomplished four months before his death at the age of 22.

Since then, more than $800 million has been raised country wide in Terry’s name.

Paris Past By Chris Whelan TERRY FOX’S MARATHON OF HOPE ALMOST NEVER CAME THROUGH PARIS – Back in the summer of 1980, Terry Fox, a 21-yearold British Columbia student who was running across Canada to raise money for cancer research, was coming through Southwestern Ontario. Mr. Fox, who had lost his right leg to cancer three years earlier, was expected to arrive in Paris on Tuesday July 15th, 1980, sometime in the morning around 8:00 AM. Paris and area had taken Terry Fox to heart and were sure glad that he decided to change his plans to include this region in his cross-Canada “Marathon of Hope.” His original route was to go north from Toronto but that changed with the numerous letters and invitations he received from this region. Terry had already covered more than 2,200 miles since he started running in Newfoundland in April. His plan was to reach his hometown of Port Coquitlam, B.C. by November. That alone would be a major achievement for any person without the handicap of an artificial limb. The sheer spunk and the noble cause which drives him left little room for doubts whether he would achieve his objective of raising money for cancer research.

Along the route Canadian Cancer Society units were collecting pledges for the run. Mr. Fox entered the area on Highway 2 coming from Ancaster and running along Colborne Street West, Dalhousie Street, Brant Avenue, Paris Road, and along to Paris. In the evening after running through Paris he was driven back to the Holiday Inn for a reception and presentation in Brantford. On July 16th, he was driven back to where he finished running the previous day to complete his journey. Mr. Fox always tried to complete 30 miles a day with two breaks during the day. A van driven by Doug and Daryl Alward, Mr. Fox's friends was always nearby and would accept spontaneous donations along the route. Cancer society officials were asking the general public not to stop or try to talk to Mr. Fox because of the concentration he needed to continue.

September 15, 1991 - In Paris more than 100 runners took to the streets in front of Paris District High School for two laps of a five-kilometre course. A documentary video of the Marathon of Hope played in the registration area which coorganizer Bob Neate hoped would add some perspective to the run "It's just a reminder” he said. “Hopefully it'll give some people some encouragement and it sets the tone for the day”.

Now in his second year of helping run things, Mr. Neate said numbers have doubled each year. He expects Paris will raise $4,000 to $4,500.

Volunteers said donation sheets ranging from $1 to $451 were handed in. Starting the race was Tanya Rabe, 15 of Drumbo, who lost her leg to cancer when she was seven. She said the run is a good idea and she hoped people would raise a lot of money for research.

COMMUNITY NEWS Optimist Club Youth Dances return this fall!

By Casandra Turnbull The Paris Optimist Club is back in full swing again with several activities and fundraisers planned for the remainder of 2022. What’s most exciting for area youth, is the return of the popular Optimist Club Youth Dances on Friday evenings.

“After almost three years of not being able to host the Optimist Youth Dances, we are very happy to let all the students in Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 know that the dances will be starting on October 14 at the Syl Apps Community Centre,” said Optimist Marilyn McCulloch. Mark your calendars for October 15, November 18, December 9th, January 13 and February 10 for future youth dances and spread the word!

The dances run from 7 pm to 10 pm and admission is $5 a person. The dances are supervised by responsible adults, as well as some high school students who earn community volunteer hours.

“The Optimists have been very happy to host these dances for over 20 years. The club decided that the youth in our community needed a safe place to socialize with other youth and have some fun. It has been a win-win situation for the youth and the club,” noted McCulloch. She’s been an Optimist member since 1996 and said she’s thoroughly enjoyed serving the youth of this community and meeting new friends along the way.

While McCulloch is an integral member of the club, Optimists have been supporting and providing many programs for youth in our community for 73 years.

Over the years the Paris Optimists have participated in a few major projects, most notably the Optimist Skate Park on Elm St. They provide several awards and scholarships at PDHS, St. John’s College, Tollage Tech and all the five elementary schools in Paris. You might also recognize their name on the backs of jerseys as regular sponsors for minor

hockey, ringette, PDHS football and PYSA baseball teams.

So how do they support so many initiatives in town?

Through fundraisers such as their upcoming craft show at the Paris Fairgrounds on November 12 & 13th. They also have a community drop box for empty liquor and beer bottles/cans, located right beside their building on Elm St. “This has been a crucial part of keeping us in the black over the pandemic. We truly thank people who drop their bottles off there,” said McCulloch.

Keep an eye out this fall if you’re a football fan. You will see Paris Optimist members barbecuing up some delicious hamburgers and hot dogs at PDHS home games too!

The Optimist club has 26 members, and they are always looking for more volunteers. If you’re over 18 and looking to bring some fresh ideas and new enthusiasm to the club in benefit of local youth, reach out via email to parisonoptimistclub@gmail.com “I joined in 1996 and have never regretted it. It is very rewarding to be able to provide programs for the youth and to get to know the community and the people who live here.”

Sneak Peak: What’s new this year?

By Casandra Turnbull The Paris Fall Fair is returning this year with a full lineup of events that will appeal to all residents looking to enjoy the same family-fun entertainment that's been the cornerstone of Agricultural Society for over 150 years.

The 2020 fair was cancelled but returned in 2021 with an abbreviated line up of events and plenty of Covid-related restrictions. Despite the uncertainty, fairgoers packed the grounds to take advantage of the annual tradition. This year, people will be relieved to know the fair is back in all its glory to formally mark the end of summer, giving people the chance to gather where friends meet!

So, let's take a sneak peak at what's new in 2022.

The gates off Oak Ave will be closed to pedestrians in order to provide emergency access for first responders, also to safe guard pedestrians who normally line up on Oak Ave for admission.

Pedestrians will need to access the fair from the centennial gates (where the sidewalk ends on

Silver Street).

Organizers renovated the gatehouse this year to welcome pedestrians who normally enter off Oak Ave. Please note this is the only entrance earmarked for pedestrians.

I N S I D E T H E PA R I S FA I R Wednesday continues to be free admission night and Campbells Amusements is offering discounted rides on both Wednesday Thursday evenings. In the past, thrill seekers took advantage of $2 rides. This year, tickets will remain at $2, however, some rides will require one or two tickets.

There are some changes to how you can watch the country show concerts this year. There will be a general admission area and a general admission area that is licensed. Both will be located directly in front of the main concert stage for first-hand seats to all the action. Note there is a $20 charge to watch the concerts from the licensed area (the new Beer Gardens). "We've been asked for several years to move the beer garden closer to the stage. We have moved the stage instead," shared Cheryl Muir, Manager of the Paris Agricultural Society.

"Everyone has an equal opportunity to be close to the stage - it's a matter of whether you want to enjoy an alcoholic beverage or not," she continued. Additional security will be in place to ensure it remains safe and enjoyable for everyone.

"They have been performing at the fair for over 30 years and have become a part of the Paris Ag Family. We wanted to do something special to honour their dedication to the sport and for their support of our agricultural fair," said Muir.

Other new entertainment news includes the addition of an Open Mic Night on Friday at the exhibition hall, in lieu of the traditional Talent Show. Since the Western Fair is not hosting the Talent Show finals this year, the Paris Fair committee decided to introduce something new and exciting that still showcases talent within our community. Stay tuned as we feature a specific story on Paris Fair Entertainment in our August 13 issue. But make sure you mark your calendar for a special BINGO game in the hall on Sunday at 2:30 pm and yes the Baby Show is returning on Monday with a slight expansion to introduce a new class open to newborns.

Needless to say, a lot of time and effort is put into organizing five days packed with family-fun and adventures. In addition to finding entertainers and vendors at industry conventions, Paris Fair committee members also network with other fair committees in surrounding communities to find out what works and what doesn't work.

"Our mission remains the same - to educate and promote agriculture and to entertain the community. However, as the interests and demographics of our community change and technology advances in agriculture, so must our events and exhibits and entertainment to not only keep the attention of our visitors but also to ensure that we are offering education that is up to day," said Muir.

Pickleball Rave!

One of North America’s fastest growing sports is gaining popularity in Paris

By Casandra Turnbull New pickleball courts opened in Paris this summer and the timing couldn’t be better as Pickleball is becoming is one of the fastest growing sports in North America.

There’s always been a keen interest in the sport locally. In fact, before the new courts, a group of players would meet regularly at the tennis courts in Paris and modify them to play pickleball.

“This involved measuring and chalking lines on the tennis

courts. I was part of the group that helped to do this on a regular basis. Every time it rained, we lost our lines,” said Paris resident Jennifer Budd.

She, along with an informal group of players led by pickleball advocate John Gilson, would meet on a regular basis to play.

As plans for Dawdy Park (in the Pinehurst subdivision) were in the works, Kathy Ballantyne, Director of Parks, and Recreation for the County of Brant, met with the local players to discuss the future courts and before long

there were discussions about forming a club. However, it takes a lot of interest and commitment early on to start an organization and doing so during a pandemic didn’t seem like a logical idea.

Club plans were put on hold, but with the opening of the new courts and lots of interest from the public, players like Budd and Gilson hope to see a Paris Pickleball Club very soon.

S P O RT S For now, The County of Brant is co-ordinating a pickleball program, drop-in style. Gilson has led some learn-to-play sessions in July that were well attended, so he added additional classes in August to keep up with the demand.

“Since pickleball is a growing sport, there was an opportunity to construct new courts at the new park,” explained Ballantyne. “In the meantime, two tennis courts in Burford and Mt. Pleasant have been resurfaced with both tennis and pickleball lines to accommodate this growing sport.”

“Having played tennis in my youth, I found the game of pickleball has some similarities,” said Budd, who was first introduced to the sport three years ago. She attended one of Gilson’s free clinics in 2019 and said she was hooked.

“It’s quick, fun and great exercise. I would encourage people to come out and give it a try,” added Budd, who would like to see the sport become available indoors in Paris this winter.

COMMUNITY NEWS Street Jammin’ downtown Paris!

BIA brings infusion of energy to your shopping experience

By Carolina Saenz Beautiful Paris is buzzing with locals and tourists alike enjoying all that summer in Paris has to offer. The Downtown Paris Business Improvement Association (BIA), however, has taken it up a notch with the new Paris Street Jams. An addition to the already wonderful dine and shop downtown experience, Paris Street Jams liven up our town with live music twice a week.

On Thursday evenings at Cobblestone Commons and on Sunday afternoons on William Street, performers spread the kind of joy and togetherness only music can bring.

Courtney McColl, owner of the Fizz Soakery, and Katherine Pickering, owner of The Paris Bohemian Gallery, share more about this BIA initiative.

They are the duo behind this project, which they describe as an ongoing learning experience that takes a tremendous amount of effort to coordinate.

“We want to start building a culture downtown that everyone is talking about. A place visitors will continue to return to and bring their friends.

Somewhere locals can enjoy live music, food, art and shopping steps from their home,” McColl explains.

“Street Jams is a bit of a pilot project to enhance the cultural experience to integrate other art facets, like actors, storytellers and other live art experiences,” she expands.

The first performance took place on July 14th and so far the list of artists featured includes SIVLE, Calm Canopy, The Nick Vokey Band, and Justin Pitters. Upcoming solo artists include Missy Bauman performing on William Street, and the bands Passion Over Reason on August 11th and The Grand Rivermen on August 18th, at Cobblestone Commons. Musicians interested in

performing are invited to apply through the BIA’s Instagram page @downtownparisbia. Three-tofour-piece rock, indie, and cover bands are invited for the Thursday jams, while solo performers are encouraged to apply for the Sunday jams as the performance area is a bit smaller.

“Walking the streets of downtown Paris, hearing live music and seeing the crowds gather has been an infusion of energy Paris needs,” shares McColl.

If you need something to do on a Thursday night, downtown Paris is the place to be,” adds McColl.

The Paris Street Jams are already garnering a very positive response, even having a small following of locals attending the shows weekly.

“Seeing the crowds gather in the Cobblestone Commons as the music starts to fill the air is so exciting! We have been very happy with the turn out and hope it continues to grow,” gushes McColl.

The shows are expected to continue for as long as the weather permits it and if logistics work next year, the Paris Street Jams could become a summer tradition in downtown Paris.

“We just ask people continue to spread the word, support and bring your friends/family out!

We can’t wait to meet you and have you experience Paris, ON,” concludes McColl.

There’s still time to Chase that Ace!

By Casandra Turnbull It’s been 25 weeks so far and no one has caught the ace!

The Lions Club of Paris’ Chase the Ace fundraiser is going strong with the jackpot closing in on $1,900 to date. The Lions Club started this virtual fundraiser earlier this year in lieu of in-person events that generate money for the club. Funds raised by the Lions go back into the community.

Money from Chase the Ace will enable the club to continue to support community projects like the Cowan Community Health Hub. They made a $50,000 donation in support of the hub last fall.

“With the cancellation of so many events of the past two years, we are now resuming our ability to raise funds to support needs within our growing community,” said Rod Laframboise, club President.

The Lions have a busy schedule for the remainder of 2022. You might notice the Lions Club food wagon August 19-20 at the Paris Drinks Fest, The Legion Car Show August 21, the Paris Fall Fair September 1 to September 5, the Drumbo Fall Fair September 24-25 and on weekends throughout September and October at Brantwood Farms “Supporting the Lions Club is supporting your community,” said Laframboise.

The Lions Club supports a diverse range of National programs from Diabetes awareness and research to vision screening and the Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dogs. Locally, the club has deep roots dating back over 90 years.

They are responsible for the original creation of Paris Lion’s Park in 1931, the ongoing refurbishment of the park over the years, including the recent completion of the Pete Lavoie Little League baseball diamonds in 2019.

Financially, they’ve contributed to local schools for

playground equipment, various projects at Green Lane Sports Complex, restoration to parts of the Paris Cenotaph, local 4-H clubs, and provided scholarships to local students, just to name a few initiatives.

You can purchase your Chase the Ace tickets now the weekly draw takes place on Tuesdays.

How it works is 52 playing cards were hidden in envelopes. When you purchase a ticket, you also get to pick a numbered envelope. On the draw date, one lucky ticket is pulled. That person takes home the weekly prize lot, but also gets to open the envelope they selected to see if they’ve found the hidden Ace of Spades. If the Ace is selected, they win the jackpot. If the Ace is not selected, the game continues, as it has for the past 25 weeks. The number found in the envelope is no longer available when people purchase tickets the following week.

“The raffle was attractive because it is a totally virtual raffle. Our club has made a concerted effort to raise our virtual profile by working on our website, Facebook and Twitter presence,” said Lion Ken Linington, Past President.
