The U11 Rep team, sponsored by Pelton Transportation, secured the Gold medal (AGAIN!) at the Rob Johnson Memorial Tournament held in Paris last weekend. The Wolfpack handily won three round robin games to advance to the quarter finals where they clobbered Elmvale 11-0. They outplayed the Oxford Storm 8-2 in the semi-finals and downed local rivals, the Burford Coyotes, 6-1 in the finals.

COMMUNITY NEWS Dallas Smith and Russell Dickerson to headline inaugural Rivers ‘N’ Roots music festival in Paris next summer The Paris Agricultural Society dropped a pretty big announcement this week - Dallas Smith and Russell Dickerson will be headlining the July 5 & 6, 2024 River ‘N’ Roots festival, which take place at the Paris Fairgrounds.

Special guests Randy Houser, The Washboard Union and Hailey Benedict (and more to come) were announced in a press release issued by Paris Agricultural Society General Manager Amy Warner.

Regular priced tickets will go on sale Thursday, November 30th at 12:01am. A weekend pass will be $250, Friday only pass will be $150, and Saturday only pass will be $175. The Paris Agricultural Society’s advance sale started yesterday, Friday, November 24th at 10am and will run until Wednesday, November 29th at 11:59pm. Cost for the weekend package, during this advance sale period only, is $199.

The Paris Agricultural Society is a registered charitable organization operating in Brant County.

During the Paris Fair, on Labour Day weekend, the traditional country concerts drew very large crowds, solidifying the venue’s ability to host a large-scale show. Over ten thousand spectators attended Tim Hicks’ performance on the Saturday night of the fair.

During that performance, Country 104 host, Kendra Moore, announced a new event for 2024... The “Rivers ‘n’ Roots Music Festival, Celebrating Our Agricultural Community”.

A portion of the proceeds from this event, will be allocated to their new Fund to support agricultural initiatives within their community. The two-day festival will take place at the Paris Fairgrounds with marketplace vendors, food trucks, a beer garden and lawn games.

This is an all-ages event, and there will be no camping on the grounds.

Santa Claus Parade 7 more sleeps!

The County of Brant confirmed this week that the route for next weekend’s Santa Claus parade will be construction free. The contractor making repairs to Grand River Street North at Banfield Street say they will be finished ahead of the December 2nd parade. The route will start on Grand River Street S (pictured above) at 6 pm. The green boxes indicate where parade participants will line up. The parade will end at Paris High School. The parade is organized by the Paris Firefighters Club, with support from Station 1 volunteer firefighters.

COMMUNITY NEWS Paris Lions give back to Community Worldwide, Lions is the largest service club with a membership of 1.4 million, serving in 48,000 clubs, established in over 200 countries.

Their motto is simple: ‘We Serve.’ It’s a simple phrase that’s reflected in the many diverse programs and organizations they support. Many people are not aware that Lions Clubs have five Global causes they fundraise to support: Diabetes foundation, vision programs, combating hunger, protecting the environment and funding to support childhood cancer research. In addition to these, the Lions support many local youth activities and community initiatives.

The Paris Lions Cub was founded in 1931 and has been serving the community ever since. Over the years, the Club has participated in many local projects, the largest and most notable (namesake) one is the creation and ongoing refurbishment of Lions Park. This major project was undertaken nearly 100 years ago in 1931 and in more recent years expanded with the addition of the amphitheatre and new and improved baseball diamonds.

The Lions Club donated towards the Cowan Community Health Hub; they support minor sports organizations, the 4H club, Scouts, and provide annual scholarships at the Paris District High School.

They’ve made cheques out to Participation House, the Salvation Army, the Children’s Safety Village and Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, just to name a few.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the club’s signature event? The Maple Syrup Festival held downtown in March of each year!

COMMUNITY NEWS The Paris Lions Club has been a big part of this community for 93 years and will continue with its service for many more years. However, the club, like many other service organizations, struggles with declining membership, which in turn affects the impact they can have on the growing community. This past year the Club put a concerted effort to develop a "Friends of Lions" program to supplement the loss of capacity within the club. This program recognizes that there are many individuals who love to volunteer their time but don't necessarily want the commitment of being a full-time member of Lions.

Over the past year, they welcomed more than 30 individuals collectively contributing approximately 400 hours of time to help the Lions Club operate its signature food wagon at various community events. The contribution of these volunteers has really eased the burden on club members and has breathed new life into what the club is able to achieve.

On November 21, The Paris Lions Club formally acknowledged the tremendous support they have received from their new “Friends of Lions”. They also made several community donations, thanks in part to the help of these volunteers, to various community groups pictured here.

COMMUNITY NEWS Paris Christmas Hamper program is a community wide initiative that embodies the spirit of the holidays

By Casandra Turnbull Perhaps you’ve heard of the Paris Community Christmas Hampers &Toy Drive? Food collections and toy collections are taking place across town – hosted by local schools, community groups, businesses and first responders – everyone wants to find a way to help this season. It’s undoubtedly a community-wide effort that embodies the true spirit of the holidays.

If you’re new to town, or don’t really know much about the initiative, let us shed some light on how this program started, how its grown over the decades and how it is making an impact in the community.

The exact origin of the Hampers is unknown, but it’s safe to say it dates back at least 30 years where the very first hampers were put together in Marg Knill-Wilson’s basement. Only a few residents received hampers at that time, recalls Shirley Simons. She’s current Chair of the Christmas Hampers Committee, a position she’s held since the very beginning. In fact, without Simons and few other founding members, including Marg, the program might not exist today.

As the years marched on, the need continued to grow. It changed from a few hampers to dozens of hampers and eventually closed in on 100 hampers and then more. During this time, the committee was growing too, and an annual tradition was well established.

Last week the County of Brant Fire Department celebrated a Service Awards and Recruitment Graduation Ceremony at the TF Warren Group Cainsville Community Centre. Paris, A Town of Many Names & Locals

Once upon a time, in the charming streets of downtown Paris, a group of friends embarked on an exploration of the town's rich history. As they strolled through the bustling avenues, their eyes were captivated by the magnificent buildings and thriving businesses that had stood the test of time.

However, it was not just the architectural wonders that caught their attention, but also the intriguing nicknames given to different parts of the town, which served as convenient identifiers for the locals.

One of the most enduring names was "Barkers Bush," a homage to the Barker family who had once owned the land and established the Barker House and Farm in the early days of Paris. This name, like many others, had seamlessly integrated into the fabric of everyday life. From the town's inception, Paris had been divided into four distinct sections: Upper Town, Lower Town, The Flats, and The Junction.

Upper Town, also known as the old South End or South Ward, was home to the original "Main Street“ (Mockingbird Hill) It held great

“Barracks Hill” 2023 credit Google Maps historical significance. This area was a hub of activity, hosting hotels, schools, churches, a fairground, a fire hall, a library, and the original Town Hall. It also housed one of the first gypsum mills, giving rise to the presence of “Old Mill St." Nestled between Race Street (the mill race) and Hillside (Mile Hill) lay Gilston Parkway, named after the Gilston Farm that once spanned the entirety of what is now known as "Fould's Survey" or affectionately referred to by locals as "Sewer City." The name stemmed from the presence of the pollution control plant situated along the Grand River, emitting a pungent odour during the summer months.

Atop Mile Hill, gypsum mines dotted the landscape, while Rest Acres Road derived its name from a former campground and swimming pool resort called "Rest Acres" near Apps Mill. On the other end of Rest Acres was

Schyler’s Hill with apple orchards surrounded by vast farmland. Highway #2 West was simply known as Woodstock Hill, and the post-World War II development became the Victoria St. Survey or the War Time Homes subdivision. Lower Town, the heart of Paris, was what locals now refer to as downtown. It owed its significance to the convergence of the Nith and Grand Rivers, providing an ideal setting for the construction of dams and the generation of waterpower for mills and industries. With two dams on the Nith (the Penmans & the Wincey) and a network of raceways, Lower Town thrived. The main raceway, which connected the Nith River to the Grand River, passed through the center of Lower Town, traversing under Grand River St. North and eventually emptying into the majestic Grand River.

MARKET ST. PARIS at “The Junction” ca. 1900 This particular area became known as "Coney Island," an endearing nickname reminiscent of an actual island. To reach Upper Town from Lower Town, one would traverse Grand River Street South, crossing the Nith River Bridge eventually arriving at "Barracks Hill." This name was derived from the Salvation Army Barracks located at #2 Grand River St. South. Just after the bridge, a road named Distillery Lane led to Distillery Hill. A set of stairs provided a shortcut to the original Paris High School, perched atop Woodstock Hill. Today, that area has been known as Queens Ward, now home to Queens View Retirement Living.

On the other side of the William Street Bridge, beyond the confines of the Flats, lay an area that was once cricket fields and a gypsum mill.

However, with the

construction of a new dam by John Penman and the Willow Street raceway, the Flats became a bustling district, powered by the colossal No. 2 & 3 Penmans Mills.

New modernized track and field planned for Paris District High School

By Casandra Turnbull A multi million-dollar upgrade to the track and field at Paris District High School is in the works.

Rafal Wyszynski, Superintendent of Business & Treasurer for the Grand Erie District School Board, was before the Administration & Operations Committee on Tuesday, Nov. 21 to present the $3 million plan to revitalize the aging track and field behind the Grand River Street North school.

While the outdoor field has certainly served its purpose and is the grounds for countless memories over the decades, a new one is

required to keep up with the growing student population and to keep up with today’s functionality and athletic demands.

Wyszynski presented a list of inadequacies and restrictions during his presentation on Tuesday.

The current format of the track has only four lanes. Lately, PDHS has been receiving an increase in requests from elementary schools to use the PDHS track. The current restriction of having only four lanes, none of which are lined, also limits the range of events that can take place, often leading to slowerpaced activities.

The current dirt/stone track is not

an ideal surface for a secondary school track. The track requires constant maintenance, which becomes especially challenging after rainfall when footprints tend to solidify into the surface rendering the track unusable and unsafe.

With the growing community, an expanding number of community members are utilizing the track for walking.

Future of Historic Walker Press Building Sparks Heritage Conservation Debate (updated)

By Chris Whelan Inquiries have been pouring in from concerned residents of Ward 2 regarding the fate of the iconic Walker Press building, nestled on Yeo Street in the historic Flats district of Paris. See Story Oct. 21, 2023 by Casandra Turnbull.

A new owner has recently taken charge and proposed an ambitious project: the construction of a sprawling condominium and apartment complex comprising over 60 units. As part of the initial stages, the owner presented their concept to the County's Heritage Advisory Committee, seeking their input and approval.

The Committee, while acknowledging the incorporation of some architectural elements from the existing structure, such as the round corner, yellow brick, and window details, decided to delve deeper into the property's historical significance. Their subsequent Heritage Evaluation report, complete with recommendations for heritage conservation measures and an alternative conceptual design, will be presented to the County's Administration & Operations Committee. During an extensive tour of the building, the developer expressed their willingness to commemorate the rich history of the site by incorporating signage or plaques in the lobby of the new building. Early History: Hiram Capron, founder of Paris, purchased the land from William Holmes in 1829, acquiring 800 acres initially. Today, this land would stretch from Silver St. south to Mechanic St. In the early 1830s, Capron expanded his holdings with an additional 200 acres on both sides of the Grand River. The eastern side, known as 'The Flats,' was later home to the Paris Foundry and Agricultural Works. Established in 1859

by David Maxwell, the foundry was a thriving business for farming implements and machinery. In 1882, under the ownership of Maxwell, the building served as his offices and was constructed by builder Duncan McKay. The foundry employed 30 to 40 workers, with weekly wages totaling around $250. In 1889, David Maxwell transferred the property to his sons, David Jr., James, and John Maxwell. In 1914 Charles Walker, a printer, purchased a portion of Lot 27 and Lots 28 and 29, east side of Willow St. By 1916 Charles Walker becomes Walker Press Ltd. and buys the building in 1920. Walker press became one of the largest employers in Paris and in 1976 the property was purchased by William Stanley and became Paris Graphics (the last owner).

S P O RT S U13 team brings home Gold from Nazem Kadri North London Classic last weekend The U13 LL 2 Fifth Ground Entertainment hockey team was in the Nazem Kadri North London Classic tournament last week and in true Wolfpack fashion, the team rallied together to bring home Gold!

It all started with a game against the North London Nationals B6 on Friday.

Paris took the 4-1 victory, getting off to a nice start. That momentum was temporarily halted with a tough 4-1 loss against the West London Hawks on Friday night.

Back on track the next day, the Wolfpack faced the Belmont Rangers in a 7-3 win.

Up next was West London Hawks again in an epic rematch that saw Paris come out on top of a hard fought 4-2 battle.

Unfortunately, the team’s amazing centreman, Emmitt Hunter, was injured at the very end of the game. The team would have to play without Emmitt heading into the finals against North London Nationals A6 team.

It was quite the experience for the young team, playing at the Western Fairgrounds on Olympic sized ice! It really was a team effort as the Paris Wolfpack clung to a 20 gold medal win. It was also the first shut out of the tournament for Lucas Baldwin.

Everyone rallied for Emmitt and played 100% after a tiring weekend. Congratulations team!

Alicen MacNeil, a Grade 11 student at Paris District High, is not your typical high school artist; her passion for art has been ingrained in her since childhood.

Alicen's artistic journey began with the gentle guidance of her mother, who fondly recalls her daughter's early years spent doodling and painting for the Paris Fair. As she navigated the bustling fairgrounds with her youthful imagination, little did she know that these early creative endeavours would set the stage for a promising artistic future.

Now, as a high school student, Alicen draws inspiration from the world around her. "Everything," she says, is her muse. Her walks, with the vast Paris sky overhead, become a canvas of inspiration.

Armed with her camera, she captures moments that later translate into the vivid strokes of her paintings.

Reflecting on a recent project for her great-grandmother, Gigi, Alicen recounts with joy how she reimagined a cherished flower painting. Gigi didn't want a duplicate; she sought Alicen's unique interpretation, a request that filled both artist and great-grandmother with immense satisfaction.

Living by the rail trail, Alicen finds inspiration in the natural beauty that Paris offers. The picturesque surroundings, combined with leisurely walks with her mom and dogs, create a perfect backdrop for her creative process.
