The U13 Select team, comprised of players from both U13 house league teams, competed in the Hespeler Olympics over the holidays and brought home silver medals. The team won all their round robin games – beating the Kent Cobras 3-2, Cambridge Hawks 4-3 and Halton Hills Thunder 2-1. Paris faced the Kent Cobras again in the finals, losing an energetic 3-1 battle. The Cobras secured the win with an open netter with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Despite the loss in the finals, Paris was able to hand the Cobras their first loss of the season during round robin play. Well done team!

COMMUNITY NEWS Kiwanis Club of Paris-Brant welcomes new members and presents Key Leader Camp experience Submitted by Stan Hutchinson PARIS, BRANT - The Kiwanis Club of Paris-Brant is excited to extend an invitation to the community for the induction of its newest members, Bob Williams, David Tisdale, and Hanna Czartoryska.

The induction ceremony will take place during the club's January 9th meeting at 6:30 PM, hosted at the Paris Legion #29.

This special event will also feature a presentation by Ian, a high school student who was sponsored by the club to attend the Kiwanis Key Leader Camp last October. Ian will share his transformative experience at the camp, which is designed to empower students and cultivate their leadership skills while inspiring them to reach their full potential.

The Kiwanis Key Leader Camp is a weekend-long program supported by Kiwanis International. It provides students with a unique opportunity to develop qualities such as empathy, confidence, and compassion. Through various workshops, activities, and team-building exercises, attendees gain valuable insights and tools to become caring and effective leaders in their communities.

By attending the Kiwanis Club of Paris-Brant's monthly meeting, community members will have a chance to learn more about the club's mission and how it actively supports the local community. They are narrow trails about the width of a bike (as opposed to wider double track or dirt roads) that are specifically designed and constructed to be enjoyed on mountain bikes. Single-track trails include features such as roots, rocks, berms (banked turns) and other features that create a unique outdoor experience.

The North of the Nith Single Track Trail network will be located mostly north of the Nith River, adjacent to the very popular ‘Barkers Bush’ area but spans around County of Brant, GRCA and privately owned lands. It covers a large area from Misener Road West in the southwestern part of town to Railway Street in the North end of town. It will accommodate public use for mountain bikes and other non-motorized user groups like hikers, runners and crosscountry skiers. The track will emulate successful singletrack networks in neighbouring communities like Waterloo, Dundas and Turkey Point.

Ross and Esposito noted that they were not asking council for financial assistance, just to support the project so they could move forward with plans to bring it to reality. The group also had a meeting with county staff recently, a good indication that the project is moving in the right direction.

They noted the trail network would ensure that the natural heritage system is protected and that the multi-use trail would align well with the county’s New Official Plan, Recreation Master Plan and Transportation Master Plan making it a win-win scenario for residents and the municipality. The BCC and the Brant Waterways Regional Trails Council will be responsible for fundraising. The initial work to create a parking lot and get a trail implemented could be around $500,000, predicts Ross, noting it’s just a ballpark figure as he responded to a question posed by Councillor John Peirce. Ross said construction would be a phased approach that can only begin after an appropriate ecological assessment. The trails will be built to a professional standard to adhered to International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) standards, which ensures both comprehensive risk management and sustainably built infrastructure.

As for ongoing maintenance once the trail is open, Ross

said trail members will take on that responsibility, usually with a great sense of pride and ownership, but there might be some flagging and pruning that the BCC will take care of a few times throughout the year.

The Brant Cycling Club is a community based, Incorporated Not-for-Profit Organization (2014), affiliated with Ontario & Canadian Cycling Associations (OCA & CCA).

It boasts 200 members, supporting and organizing weekly group rides allowing its members to enjoy a safe environment for exercising and exploring in the County of Brant. Additionally, it hosts a youth mountain bike program at the Rotary Bike Park teaching skills and instilling confidence in the next generation of local cyclists. The Rotary Bike Park itself was a successfully completed $500,000 Brant Cycling Club led project, so they are no strangers to bringing recreation projects to life.

The presentation during the December 19th Brant County Council meeting was received as information only. The group will continue to work with County staff to iron out project details.

MPP Will Bouma looks back at 2023 provincial funding announcements

MPP Will Bouma shared a list of accomplishments from 2023 during a December 19th Brant County Council meeting.

Some of those included financial announcements such as the $28.38 million for the emergency room redevelopment at the Brantford General Hospital (top left photo includes Bouma and Mayor David Bailey) and a $3 million provincial commitment from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund for a planned expansion at Numesh in Cainsville.

By Casandra Turnbull MPP Will Bouma was a last-minute guest at council just before the holidays where he gave an enthusiastic reflection of some of the biggest and impactful announcements over the past year.

Bouma’s quick message delivered on many financial commitments the province made in Brant and Brantford in 2023; these investments boosted local businesses, healthcare and social services.

Bouma started with the April 12th $202 million provincial announcement to combat

homelessness. Locally, $7 million was designated through Social Services Brantford to help keep people off the streets.

On May 4th, Mastro Vinci, a food processing plant in Brantford, announces a $1.58 million manufacturing investment. Bouma was pleased to present $237,000 in provincial funding for that project which will bring about a dozen more jobs to the community, he cited.

In early June, Bouma helped bring a new service to Brantford, a project that he stumbled across by chance. While hosting a couple mother and daughter duos from

Ukraine and helping them obtain health cards, Bouma realized the closest location to access this inperson service was in Simcoe.

“With quick work from the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery we were able to open a satellite office in the City of Brantford, which has helped out a lot of people in the community,” said Bouma.

By the end of June, Bouma was in Paris putting a shovel in the ground to signify the start of the Trillium Way Affordable Housing project.

Days later, Bouma announced the province was supporting Numesh’s expansion plans with a $3 million commitment from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund.

Numesh, the largest Canadian manufacturer of welded steel wire and wire mesh used for concrete reinforcement, is investing $39.9 million in its facility, which will create more than 50 new jobs in the community.

“Applications are open for the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund. So, if you know a small business looking to expand, this fund is very critical,” said Bouma.

The next major funding announcement took place at Mitsui High-Tech where they announced plans for a $102.3 million project to construct a new 103,500 square foot facility in Brantford. The province invested $3.1 million into that project to help create 104 highly skilled local jobs, said Bouma.

In July, Bouma announced that $28.38 million will be earmarked for the emergency room redevelopment at the Brantford General Hospital.

“The hospital continues to have major infrastructure issues and we are working through those things,” said Bouma. “I hope to be able to have some good news shortly on how to resolve [them]. While we are hoping for a new hospital in the next decade, I’m hoping 5-7 years, obviously we need to keep the current facility running.”

In October, the province invested $564,000 locally to the Brantford,

Brant and Cambridge Boys and Girls Club to ensure the continued success and growth of the after school programs and to help kids remain active and healthy.

On December 8th, Bouma said a facilitator was appointed to help find a resolution between SC Johnson and developer Rosart Bucci Group, who submitted a rezoning application in March to build 156 units in townhouse blocks, on land deemed industrial, right next to the SC Johnson facility. The rezoning application prompted SC Johnson to announce they might have to leave the city after a century of business.

Bouma highlighted that the company has contributed more than $43 million into the local economy over the last 100 years and hopes the facilitator can help reconcile the dispute. SC Johnson employs more than a hundred fulltime employees, as well as seasonal employees.

That same day, Bouma also announced the completion of a high-speed internet project in partnership with Swift that saw 1,639 farmers, families and businesses connect to high-speed internet access.

“I appreciate the county’s involvement in this project,” said Bouma who recognized the importance of access to online businesses, especially with the significant number of individuals who work from home.

On December 13th, a $2.7 million announcement came from the province to invest in next generation 9-1-1 service, a much need technological upgrade, Bouma noted.

Other mentions included the County’s Official Plan submission, which Bouma says is at the top of his mind.

Looking to 2024, Bouma plans to continue to work alongside the Catholic School Board to advocate for local education, and he hopes to build a positive relationship with the Grand Erie School Board.

JUNE 2018 - Downtown Paris will forever remember the legacy of Lisa Dalpe as commemorative signs were unveiled, immortalizing her contributions to the community.

On June 15, 2018, approximately 30 individuals, including Lisa's husband Paul and their three sons, Zac, Ben, and Phil, who all excel in hockey, along with Paris councilor Shirely Simons and Mayor Ron Eddy, gathered at the walkway between the Paris municipal customer service office and the Bank of Montreal. They came together to witness the unveiling of signs designating the walkway as Lisa's Way, a heartfelt tribute to her memory. thrive, and we are deeply honoured that Paris has chosen to etch her name into history."

Lisa, who sadly passed away at the age of 51 on September 15, 2015, after a valiant battle with kidney cancer, was an active figure in the community. As a business owner, event organizer, and fundraiser, she left an unforgettable mark on those around her.

"She went above and beyond what was expected of her, and naming this walkway in Lisa's honour is a small way to express our gratitude to her and her family," remarked businesswoman Sheila Tough..

For many years, Lisa, alongside her father Gord Gibson, owned and operated Just the Ticket and later Inksaters.

Additionally, she held membership and leadership roles within the Paris BIA, serving as a member, co-chair, and chairwoman Lisa played a pivotal role in organizing various events that brought the community together, including Paris Street Fest, Christmas in Paris, and fundraisers for Cobblestone Common Park in the downtown area. Beyond her involvement in business and community events, Lisa was an avid basketball and hockey enthusiast.

She dedicated her time to the Paris Minor Hockey organization, serving on the executive committee, while also managing and treasuring numerous Brantford "AAA" hockey teams.

Furthermore, Lisa managed the successful softball team, the Paris Predators, leading them to victory as champions. In her commitment to community service, Lisa was a proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in Paris and volunteered as a canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The unveiling of the commemorative signs in downtown Paris not only pays homage to Lisa Dalpe's remarkable contributions but also ensures that her memory will be cherished by generations to come.

Her dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to her community have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire others to try to follow in her footsteps.

S P O RT S Teams from across Ontario to face off in Lisa Dalpe Memorial Hockey Tournament this weekend in Paris

By Casandra Turnbull Two dozen teams from across Ontario will descend upon Paris this weekend as the Paris Minor Hockey Association hosts the annual Lisa Dalpe Memorial Hockey Tournament from January 5-7.

The house league tournament, sponsored by the Brant County Milk Producers, will feature teams in both the U11 and U13 divisions. Paris Wolfpack Team 1, sponsored by Brant Sports and Team 2, sponsored by Kings Wood Products will compete in the U11 division and Paris Wolfpack Team 1, sponsored by Charles & Lloyd and Team 2, sponsored by Fifth Ground Entertainment will compete in the U13 division.

If you’d like to catch some action today, January 6th, drop by the Brant Sports Complex to watch the U11 Team 2 play at 9 am against the St. George Generals, the U13 Wolfpack Team 1 plays

at 12 pm against the Ayr Flames, the U11 Team 2 faces the West London Hawks at 3 pm, and the U13 Team 1 plays Central Wellington Fusion at 6 pm. A full tournament schedule is available here.

The annual tournament is named after a local woman – Lisa Dalpe – who gave endlessly to this community. Lisa was a local entrepreneur, a respected member, co-chair and chairwoman of the Paris BIA, she was instrumental in organizing many memorable events that still take place today, including Paris Street Fest, Christmas in Paris and she was at the helm of fundraising for the Cobblestone Common Park downtown. She was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi in Paris and a dedicated volunteer canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Above all else, she was a mom – a HOCKEY MOM! Lisa was a past executive member of PMHA, treasurer/manager of

many Brantford AAA hockey teams and she spent hours at the arena watching her three boys play hockey. She was incredibly proud of her sons Phil, Zac and Ben for their accomplishments on ice. Lisa passed away in September of 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer.

“My brothers and I really appreciate the memorial tournament and it is great to see teams from all over Ontario compete in it,” said Phil last year during the annual tournament. He was in attendance for the ceremonial puck drop, alongside his wife Marianne, their two children Avery and Declan and his father, Lisa’s husband of 30 years, Paul Dalpe.

“It honestly feels amazing. I see things everyday that she’s left (behind), stuff for us to maintain and I believe we do it in a ‘Lisa’ type manner,” said Phil, referring to a special way his mom could make things happen.

S P O RT S Paris team brings home Silver Medals from Silver Stick Tournament!

The U11 Rep Team, sponsored by Pelton Transportation, plays well under pressure and proved that a lot of energy and hard work really does pay off. The team collected silver medals from the Canadian Regionals (aka the International Silver Stick Tournament) in Alvinston Ontario over the holidays.

the West London Hawks in 9-2 that earned the team a bye into the semi-finals. Colson Baker was on fire scoring four goals to earn the MVP title.

The team started Saturday off with a bang, collecting a 5-1 win over West London in the semi-finals.

Maddex Heintzman was awarded MVP for the game.

Paris handily won game won against Lambeth Lancers with a 72 victory. Jack Corbett, who put up two goals (as did teammate Landon Speagle) was awarded MVP for this game.

Next up, the Wolfpack dominated

The highly anticipated finals was against a tough Ilderton Jets team.

Paris faced Ilderton earlier in the season during an exhibition game where the two teams battled it out in a 1-1 tie so everyone knew the

game would be intense, challenging everyone to bring their A game on the ice.

The Wolfpack battled through a few injuries throughout the game and never gave up. After a backand-forth exchange of goals, Paris lost a close 4-3 game. Johnathan Dixon earned the MVP title.

Honourable mentions goes out to both goalies Will Balkwill and Connor Brittain for fending off the opponents allow Paris’ offense to shine.

COMMUNITY NEWS Local jobless rate among the lowest in Ontario BRANTFORD (Jan. 5, 2024) – The year 2023 ended on a strong note, as the Brantford area jobless rate for December stayed one of the lowest in Ontario.

Brantford-Brant’s unemployment rate last month was 4.3%, up from November’s 4.2%, according to Statistics Canada, which conducts a monthly survey of residents. The survey estimated that employment grew by several hundred jobs last month, pushing up the employment rate to a six-month high.

There is limited Statistics Canada data for Norfolk, but the unemployment rate has hovered below 5% over the last six months.

Canada’s unemployment rate was unchanged in December at 5.8%, while Ontario’s rate increased to 6.3% due to an estimated 48,000 fewer people working.

The Brantford-Brant jobless rate was tied for third lowest in the province, only behind Belleville and Peterborough and matching Thunder Bay. Over the course of 2023, the area unemployment rate has ranged from a high of 6.8% in January to a low of 3.9% in June. For the last few months, the rate has been just above 4%.

There were about 1,600 new positions and 3,400 total active jobs posted last month on Grand Erie Jobs, the online job board operated by the Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie.

There were about 1,250 employers looking for workers.

The number of jobs advertised online by Grand Erie employers has been declining in recent months, a yearly seasonal trend that has been seen across Ontario on job boards operated by two dozen workforce planning boards.

Retail salesperson was the top advertised job last month, locally and across Ontario. Health care and food industry jobs accounted for the rest of the Top 5 postings in Grand Erie, similar to what was seen elsewhere in the HamiltonNiagara region.
