It’s the Optimist Club’s mantra to support local youth initiatives and they did just that this past week when they presented a young and rising 13-year-old Paris athlete with a $500 cheque. The money will help offset some of Brooklyn O’Krafka’s costs as she competes at various tournaments on the Provincial, National and World level of the Junior Disc Golf circuit. Brooklyn shared part of her journey during a recent Optimist Club of Paris meeting.

COMMUNITY NEWS Successful Priceless Art Auction returning to Paris next month Rotary Satellite Club of Paris announces 2nd Annual Silent (and penniless) Auction fundraiser slated for February 23

The Priceless Art Auction, hosted by the Rotary Satellite Club of Paris, returns to the Wincey Mills next month on February 23.

“We had some incredible feedback (from last year), and almost all of the art from last year was acquired by the winning

bidders, so a lot of community service hours were created at our event,” said Dale Hall, a member of the Rotary Satellite Club of Paris.

The event is an art auction like no other. Rather than opening your wallet to acquire some fantastic artistic pieces created by local artists, you open your schedule and dedicate volunteer time to a

non-profit organization or group in the community. Once you’ve completed your volunteer hours, the artwork is delivered to you.

The only catch is you must volunteer at an organization that you are not already a member of or associated with; otherwise, where you do your time is completely up to you.

Some of the organizations supported during the inaugural auction last January included Brant Tree Coalition, Why Not Youth Services, Salvation Army Food Bank (Brant County) and the Brantford Harlequins RF. A total of 224 volunteer hours were raised and served last year and Hall said the Rotary Club would love to surpass that figure and possibly exceed 250 hours this year.

“I believe this event will continue to grow and see success because it’s an affordable night out for members of the community, and they’re able to support local artists and support our community in a single effort. Art auctions are often for people within a certain income bracket, and we’ve knocked down that barrier,” he told The Paris Independent.

The style of artwork is diverse and

includes some very familiar names from the community – Holly O, Britney Traver, Natasha Lehman and Allyson Schmidt-Reeves to name a few. All the artists are sourced by The Taren White Gallery, located in downtown Paris. If you’d like to catch a sneak peak at the artwork already donated for the silent auction, check them out on Instagram (click here).

The fundraiser is sponsored by Millards Chartered professional Accountants, ROI Group and River Realty Team. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23.

COMMUNITY NEWS County politicians and staff observe Truth and Reconciliation presentation

By Casandra Turnbull Municipal politicians observed a sobering and impactful Truth and Reconciliation presentation on Thursday at the Woodland Cultural Centre.

The Mayor, Councillors and County of Brant staff toured the facilities and witnessed a virtual tour of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School. Heather George and staff at the Woodland Cultural Centre led the presentation aimed to help people gain a better understanding of the road to reconciliation. County of Brant Arts, Culture & Heritage Officer Kayla Cicman organized the educational opportunity.

Councillor Steve Howes said he was incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to experience the history through a virtual tour, which he described as a difficult and valuable lesson in Canadian History.

“The Mush Hole was one of the first Residential Schools in Canada and also one of the last to still be in operation and the stories from the survivors are so important,” he shared on a public social media post following the presentation. “We were able to tour the former school, now under renovations and I had to

Councillor Lukas Oakley implored residents to take the virtual tour and consider donating to support the Cultural Centre’s invaluable facility.

“There is a lot to unpack and absorb from the very sobering experience; but I am very grateful to the staff at the @woodlandculturalcentre for the educational afternoon,” he shared online.

Mayor David Bailey, a longtime supporter of reconciling the two communities, Brant County and Six Nations, said Thursday’s lesson goes a long way to help Brant County staff and councillors to really understand the magnitude of the road to reconciliation.

“I believe the first steps are to just listen to the stories and reflect.”

It’s the middle of January and winter is really here now! With colder temperatures and mounds of snow, there’s plenty of things to do to keep you occupied before Winter ends! I’ve complied a list of things to check out, right here in Paris, this Winter season.

Ice Skating Ice skating is a very popular activity to do during the winter season, especially if you know how to skate. If you’d like to go ice skating during the winter season, I’d suggest you go to the Brant Sports Complex which offers a welcoming family environment with its ice rinks, making it an ideal spot for skaters of all levels. Whether you're a cool pro or just starting, the rink provides a good setting for a day of skating enjoyment.

If you like that outdoor rink, there are usually a few outdoor rinks in Paris – Optimist Park and the Syl Apps Community Centre to name a few.

COMMUNITY NEWS But the Paris District High School isn’t the only place you could toboggan at, you can also toboggan at Lion’s Park in downtown Paris. Lion’s Park, located in downtown Paris, is another fantastic spot for some thrilling tobogganing fun. With its large slopes and snowy terrain, it provides one of the best settings in Paris for winter excitement. The park has these big hills, making it a great destination for families and thrill-seekers alike for going downhill. If you’re a real pro, take your chances at Green Lane where there are some really large hills and big thrills!

Another great location is the mini hill at 56 Whitlaw Way at Bemrose Park. It’s a great starter hill if you’re new to the tobogganing game! So, if you're in the mood for some frosty adventures, grab your sleds and try them all out!

Paris Trails

The trails aren’t only a great attraction in the Fall, but in the Winter as well! Get ready to bundle up because the trails around Paris are open all year long. The sensory walk at Paris’ Lion’s Park looks very pretty during the Winter with the trees that are all leaves-less and have snow on them. The river is flowing on the right which makes a very peaceful flowing sound as you walk on the trail admiring the forest. Make sure to bundle up before leaving the house!

Conclusion From skating, to tobogganing, to hiking, there are still a ton of fun activities to do during the Winter in the great town of Paris, Ontario! As I have said before, it is the middle of Winter, and Spring is approaching, so make sure to spend some quality Winter outdoor activities with your family before the season ends!

Maybe consider snowshoeing at the Grand River Conservation Authority’s Pinehurst Park just outside of Paris! Make sure you check out the Conservation Authority’s status page before packing your gear for a winter trek!

GRAND RIVER CONSERVATION AUTHORITY – OUTDOOR WINTER ACTIVITIES Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing •Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are offered at Laurel Creek, Pinehurst Lake, and Shade's Mills when trail conditions are suitable.

•Learn more about cross-country skiing and snowshoeing including fees, rentals and how to access information about what trails are open and current conditions.

Ice fishing •An ice fishing program is offered at Shade's Mills, Pinehurst Lake and Belwood Lake, when conditions are suitable. Conditions are monitored to ensure the ice thickness meets safety requirements. When the ice is unsafe, the program is suspended until it is safe to resume.

•Learn more about ice fishing including fees, hours and how to access information about current conditions.

Hiking and walking •The following conservation areas are open during the winter months, even when ski trail and ice fishing conditions aren't suitable for formal winter programs: Shade's Mills, Pinehurst Lake, Laurel Creek, Belwood Lake, Guelph Lake and Rockwood. For your safety, please heed any trail condition postings.

•All other Grand River Conservation Areas remain closed for the winter season, and are generally open from May 1 to October 15.

Seeking to lose weight at this time of the year is great because although there is truly no perfect time, in January we tend to socialize less because it’s cold outside, we are still paying off our Christmas bills and there is just less going on!

There are a few problems I witness year after year with friends and family as they approach weight loss in the wrong way. They may put too much emphasis on the gym and not enough on their nutrition and although going to the gym is great for building strength and improving your cardiovascular endurance, it is not the best way to lose weight!

This must have arrested its progress considerably, and when the coach began its passage over the structure, it must have been moving very slowly. The cause of the truck being derailed can only be figured out by the Grand Valley officials as being due to the amount of snow on the tracks at that point. On the bridge, the front of the car seemed to be raised up, and the kingpin pulled from the front trucks. This truck was left standing on the bridge when the car went over.

Dr. Marquis, at the request of the Grand Valley Company, left this morning to attend to the injuries of Messrs. Beacom and Buckwell transferring them to the city.

According to those who were in

the wreck, it was fortunate that the heavy truck and wheels left standing on the bridge did not overturn with the car. If they had, it would have surely struck someone and resulted in a fatality.

Considering everything, the final outcome of the accident is less serious than it could have been. If the company had taken all the passengers at Paris instead of refusing tickets as they did, the list of injuries would have certainly been greater. The car has been severely damaged and will require complete rebuilding as a result of the crash.

This article originally appeared in the newspaper on Thursday, January 16, 1908, a day after the accident occurred. The photos were all taken that next day when there was day light.

S P O RT S Titans drop overtime nail biter against Norwich Merchants Paris Titans Report with George Le Gresley

Winter weather played havoc last Friday on the PJHL schedule, cancelling the Titans visit to Wellesley, which can be a treacherous drive in stormy weather. That brings us to last Saturday’s first home game of 2024 against the Norwich Merchants.

The first period was scoreless, with both teams looking a little rusty after the holidays. Netminder Ryan Burroughs was steady at his

position putting aside 13 of Norwich’s shots. Three minutes into the second period, Owen Switzer made a pass Seth Kirou, who makes passed the puck to Christian Campanelli who buried it into the net. Four minutes later the Titans score again on Tyler Crisostomo shot on goal and a 2-0 lead. The period ends with another Titan penalty and a Norwich power play goal with 29 seconds left in the period.

With a Titan still in the sin bin due to a 5 minute major penalty for a head shot, the Merchants fly off the 3rd period opening faceoff to score another power play goal within 6 seconds to tie the score at 2. The rest of the period was scoreless and the

Titans were off to play their fifth overtime game. The first three minutes of the game featured scoring chances from both sides, until 3 minutes into the period, a Titan gets a tripping play and Norwich scoring a goal to end the game with a 3-2 win for the Merchants.

The Titans next game is at home tonight, January 20 at 7:30, where they will welcome the New Hamburg Firebirds at the Brant Sports Complex.

S P O RT S PDHS Girls Volleyball: Panthers compete with top teams during exciting games this week Paris Panthers Report with George Le Gresley

Junior Girls Volleyball Paris was facing a big challenge facing the 1st place BCI side.

Game 1 the Panthers took the lead halfway through the game at 1615 and never gave up the lead to win the game 25-19. Game 2 belonged to BCI, leading the entire game with a score of 25-16.

Game 3, BCI wins. The Panthers were fighting hard to compete, coming close to tying the game at 19-20, but faded at the end losing 25-2, falling behind on games 2-1.

Paris on the verge of losing the match, came out roaring, scoring 12 consecutive points on Coulter Cahoon’s serves and a 14-2 lead.

BCI came back from such a big deficit tying the score at 24, but the Panther girls rallied to close out the game 26-24.

Game 5, the 15 point tie breaker game, had BCI winning the toss and serving first, won the game 15-10 to seal the match win.

There’s an old saying that you can learn more from a loss than a win but, there’s no doubt they will have learned a few lessons in what

turned out to be a great performance.

Senior Girls Volleyball The first game the Panthers started out with a 13-12 lead but faded for the next 8 points until catching up to BCI with a 21-21 tie. From that point, Paris took and held onto the lead to win Game 1, 25-23. During game 2 the Paris ladies led the entire game leading to a win, again by a two point margin 25-23.

In game 3 it was another seesaw battle with the final score of 25-23 for a BCI win. Game 4, with the Paris Girls trailing all game, they ended up losing 25-17. Game 5, the 15 point tie breaking game, started being a close one until the score was 5-5. At that point, the Panther senior team took the lead at 7-6 and increased their lead with 7 winning serves by Lauren Cohoon, to close out a match final a 15-6

S P O RT S Both PDHS hockey drop games to Assumption College Paris Panthers Report with George Le Gresley

Girls Hockey The Panther Girls team faced the Assumption team, both tied for first place with 5-1 records on January 15. Assumption opens the scoring with a mad scramble on the net and takes a 1-0 lead. The Panthers take two consecutive penalties and score a power play goal and with 2 minutes left in the period score a third goal to end the period with a 3-0 lead.

Three minutes into the second period Reese Halliday passes to Pyper Morley who puts the puck behind the ACS goal line, dropping the Assumption lead to 2.

PDHS gets off to a good start early in the third period with a goal by Naren Parker, with assists to Harley Shuart and Scoutt Hergott-Leader. The Panther girls had plenty of opportunities for scoring due to Lion penalties, with Reese Reese Halliday hitting the goal post twice on a power play.

Paris had three power plays in the last 6 minutes of the game

and couldn’t take advantage of those opportunities to tie the game. The game ended with Paris pulling their goalie and Assumption sealing the game with an empty net goal and a final 4-2.

Boys Hockey The first period featured a fired up Panthers offence, dominating the 1st place Assumption Lions but failing to score.

In the second period Paris continues their aggressive offence, resulting on a goal by Carson Brown from a pass off Jacob Adams stick. A minute later, the Lions score to tie the score at 1. With 7:41 left in the period, the Panthers get a 6 minute power play that results in plenty of chances but Paris fails to capitalize.

The Lions ended up scoring a shorthanded goal for a 2-1 lead.

With 2 minutes left in the period Carson Brown scores for Paris tying up the game at 2-2. With 15 seconds left an ACS attacker breaks in alone and is tripped by a Panther defender. The referee calls for a penalty shot and Assumption scores to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the period.

The 3rd period the Panthers desperately tried to tie the score,

pulling their goalie at the end of the period; unfortunately, ACS scored an empty net goal to close out a win with a 4-2 score.

S P O RT S Junior and Senior Panthers Face Contrasting Outcomes in Basketball Showdown Paris Panthers Report with George Le Gresley

Boys Basketball In an intense battle on the basketball court, the Junior and Senior Panthers of Paris High School experienced mixed fortunes as they took on the undefeated St. John's Eagles. The junior team put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell short, while the seniors suffered a forgettable defeat.

Juniors The Junior Panthers started the game with determination, taking an early lead in the first quarter and maintaining it until the end, finishing the period with a 17-12 advantage. Encouraged by their strong start, the Paris Juniors continued their impressive performance in the second quarter, building a comfortable lead of 2918 with just under three minutes remaining.

However, their momentum waned towards the end of the quarter, resulting in a halftime lead of 31-24.

The St John's Eagles, refusing to be defeated, launched a spirited comeback in the third quarter.

With 3:07 left on the clock, they managed to tie the score, and when the buzzer sounded, they found themselves ahead by five points, with the Panthers trailing at 39-44. As the game entered its final period, Paris' offense showed signs of resurgence, matching St John's point for point and tying the game at 50-50 with three minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Junior Panthers, their efforts fell short, and they eventually succumbed to a 62-53 defeat.

Seniors For the Senior Panthers, it was an evening to forget. Shooting struggles plagued the team throughout the game, with most of their attempts failing to find the mark. On the defensive end, Paris seemed to abandon their usual tenacity, and rebounding became a rare sight. Frustrated by the team's performance, the coaching staff made the bold decision to bench all five starters, opting to give the second string an opportunity to salvage the game.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the coaching staff remains optimistic about the team's potential. Recognizing that even good teams can have off nights, they view this defeat as a mere blip on the radar. With aspirations of making a deep playoff run, the Panthers are determined to regroup and rediscover their winning form.

As the season progresses, both the Junior and Senior Panthers will strive to learn from their experiences, using this game as motivation to improve and grow.

With their eyes firmly set on future challenges, the Paris High School basketball program remains confident that these setbacks will ultimately fade into insignificance as they aim to reach their full potential.

He was set to compete in the 2022 World Winter Games in Russia in snowshoeing, however, they were cancelled due to the war/conflict.

Todd Wood (Paris) Category: Team Achievements: Todd is the past owner of the Paris Mounties where he worked diligently to invest in finding local players for the team. Through his ownership of the Mounties, Todd hosted fundraisers and was able to help raise over $250,000 for the Rett Association (Ref for Rett fundraisers).

Burford Coyotes U9 MD Team – 2022/2023 Season (Brant West) Category: Team Achievements: First U9 MD team in Burford history to be seeded in the Southern Counties A Division and go undefeated all season long, winning the entire year, including the year end championship. Don Henderson (Brant West) Category: Athlete Achievements: Over the years Don and Grace Henderson supported many local minor sports teams under the Don Henderson Automotive banner. Don had a wrecking yard and repair shop in Burford where he was a huge support of the high school co-op program, hiring many young students.

He was a long-time support of youth sports (right up until his death) in the community as well as his own accomplishments of pioneering efforts in the sport of drag racing here in Ontario. He was a member of the Piston Pushers Car Club, he operated the Cayuga Drag Strip, he was sponsored by Ford of Canada and Brant County Ford in Super Stock 66 Ford Fairlane and Super Stock 69 Ford Mustang. He was a feared competitor in the Super Stock Class and travelled for competition to local dragstrips across Southwestern Ontario and across the border at Niagara Dragway and Detroit Dragway.

He also qualified for and competed in the Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indiana.

It has been an extraordinary journey, one that has allowed me to step into the private worlds of local artists each month, witnessing their creative process and hearing the unique stories that have shaped their artistic paths.

I am deeply honoured to have had this opportunity and am thankful for each artist who graciously welcomed me into their homes and studios.

Paris has such a beautiful art community, and being embraced by its vibrancy and diversity has been a privilege I will forever cherish.

Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of exploring the studios of various local artists, from seasoned professionals to emerging talents. The sheer diversity of styles, mediums, and perspectives within the
