Caston Elementary recognized as PLTW ‘Distinguished School’ %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Although Caston is one of the smaller school districts in the state, it certainly isn’t inhibited it from being one of the most innovative when it comes to advanced programming in its classrooms. Last week, Caston Elementary earned the distinction of being recognized as a “2021 Project Lead the Way Distinguished School for STEM, career and learning programs.” In fact it is one of only 310 elementary schools nationwide to be bestowed with the honor. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Project Lead The Way is a mission-driven organization transforming the learning experience for millions of pre-K through high school students

and thousands of teachers across the U.S. Approximately 12,200 elementary, middle, and high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia offer PLTW programs. According to its website, “PLTW empowers students to develop in-demand, transportable knowledge and skills through pathways in computer science, engineering and biomedical science. PLTW’s teacher training and resources support teachers as they engage their students in realworld learning.” Caston Elementary started using the PLTW curriculum five years ago in its first-grade classrooms, according to its principal, Jennifer Lukens. It began with a funding grant from the Fulton County Economic Development Corporation. Since its inception at the school, the PLTW program has been expanded in all elementary grade levels from kinder-
garten through fifth grade. “Project Lead the Way is a program with a science-based curriculum designed with hands-on critical thinking for students,” said Lukens. “As part of the PLTW curriculum, our students participate in two nine-week modules each year.” The modules are grade-appropriate and include things like building robots and germ testing. Lukens said one of the favorite modules has kindergarten students building structures with the ultimate test having the teacher use a leaf blower to attempt to blow over their creations. “We’ve really built upon it these past five years,” said Lukens. “We’ve expanded it into the junior high and high school with Nathan Speitel leading the way. He provides training for the teachers and also introduces new teachers to how PLTW works in the
curriculum.” Lukens also emphasized the work put in by Angie Miller, the curriculum director at Caston who spearheaded the implementation of PLTW at the school, beginning before she became the principal. “She really put in a lot of hard work to get us to this point,” Lukens emphasized. The distinguished school recognition from PLTW was a surprise to Lukens and her team at Caston. The official statement noted the award was given to schools that “have demonstrated their commitment to student engagement and access through hands-on, interdisciplinary STEM-based curriculum.” “It is a great honor to recognize districts and schools all across the countryy for their unwavering commitment to provide students Continued on page 5
