Joe’s Hope Foundation finds a family helping families

like this.”
In 2023, the American Cancer Society estimates there are 40,270 new cancer diagnoses in Indiana, with 13,660 dying from the disease. And for every individual facing this diagnosis, there are loved ones dealing with the dire emotional and economic problems associated with treatment.
The family of Joe Shidler of Argos knows this all too well. In 2011, Joe was diagnosed with leukemia and died in 2014. During that time the family formed a Relay For Life team, which they continued until 2020, when the team turned into Joe’s Hope Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit
Joe’s brother, Dustin Shidler, is president of the foundation formed to help families like his. “The last thing they should have to worry about is where money is coming from,” he stated. Joe’s Hope seeks to help with car, mortgage and utility and other regular payments, which can become burdensome on top of medical bills and other, often unforeseen, difficulties.
For example, the foundation recently provided a $250 gas card to help cover the expense of driving to Kokomo three times per week for chemotherapy treatments.
Joe faced similar problems, said Dustin, who recalled his brother saying, “I don’t know how much longer I can go on
In the event money is not a problem, Joe’s Hope can help find other resources families may be unaware of. “We are hardpressed not to be able to find something to help,” said Dustin, even if it simply means being emotionally supportive.
Joe’s Hope fundraisers primarily involve monthly work at Fulton County Recycling Center, for which Dustin is grateful to the center’s director, Stacy Hart. They also volunteer at the Pork Producers’ Fulton County Fairground stand, and they serve buffalo burgers at Fulton County Historical Society’s Trail of Courage event.

World War II veteran reflects on 100 years, part 2
Editor’s note: The following story is continued from the 5/31 Know Your Neighbor article.
Following the Japanese surrender in World War II, Louis Horvath served out his stint with the 11th Airborne Division in various guard posts around the country before returning to the United States in 1946.
Travel conditions had certainly changed after the war ended. “It took over 30 days to get from San Francisco to the Phillipines. But it only took eight days to travel from Japan to San Francisco,” He said, again exhibiting a remarkably clear memory of events nearly 80 years passed.
Horvath’s job at Bendix Corporation was waiting for him in South Bend, and he returned to work. But it was not long before his life was again unexpectedly derailed.
“They took x-rays every year at that time,” he recalled, as the health risks of radiation were still not fully understood. And,
unfortunately, someone spotted a worrisome spot on Horvath’s lung. In spite of the fact he showed no other symptoms, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and quarantined at Healthwin Sanitarium outside of South Bend. “It was a full house with people on every floor.”
A new antibiotic, streptomycin, along with other medicines, would eventually lead to the disease’s decline in the 1950s, but it appeared to be ineffective in Horvath’s case. He would spend the next three years at Healthwin, and doctors eventually removed five ribs to collapse the affected lung.
Horvath was eventually released, and to this day believes he was misdiagnosed or worse, exploited as a single, unmarried man to fill beds and receive government funding. “I never felt sick,” he said.
Whatever the case, Horvath, now five ribs lighter, returned to Bendix, where he continued his job as a shop clerk, primarily building automobile parts. But his military involvement was not completely over. Bendix also developed Talos, a ship-to-air missile used by the US Navy from 1957 to 1979. “We
worked on the electronics part of the guidance system,” he said.
And it was also at Bendix where Horvath met his wife, Weddad. The pair had mutual friends and shared a love of golf. They were married in 1962 and would go on to spend the next 53 years together until she died in 2015 at the age of 94. While they never had children of their own, they have extended family across the country, including Fulton County.
Horvath credits his longevity to a walking regimen of two miles every day. “Right from the start we walked every day. … No matter what the weather was like.” In the winter months they would wear snowmobile suits to keep warm on their constitutionals.
The happy couple also benefited from “a great retirement program.” Horvath was able to retire at age 53 after 34 years of employment. The pair also traveled regularly in their motor home, often visiting his brother in Florida.
In spite of this, Horvath is a little baffled by his own long life. “I didn’t think I’d be around very long. … Both my parents were gone by age 63.”
On Dec. 10, 2022, he received a
letter from President Biden, which read, in part, “It is a privilege to wish you a happy 100th birthday and to thank you for your inspiring service in the United States Army. The selflessness of veterans like you who answered our nation’s
call to serve during World War II defines the true character of our Greatest Generation. We remain forever indebted to all those who have worn the uniform and have sacrificed beyond measure for our cherished freedoms.”

raiser takes place at the corner of Ninth and Main streets. On May 20, volunteers collected $1,020. They will be back at the corner from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.
Since 2020, online donations on Facebook have begun picking up, said Dustin, and the foundation is hoping to “branch out” into popcorn fundraisers as well.
Recently, Hannah Clemans assumed the duties of apparel director, and Dustin hopes more hats, hoodies and T-shirts will be available for purchase at
All of Joe’s Hope funding comes from these and other grassroots efforts. It is raised and spent locally, without the aid of grant funding.
Dustin also credited his mother and foundation treasurer Angie McNees; sister and secretary, Lacey Shidler; father Chad Shidler and stepfather Keith McNees for keeping the foundation alive. “If it weren’t for them, I don’t know where we’d be today.”
At the root of it all, however, is Joe himself. “He’s our main driving factor. If he was still here he’d be leading the effort. He still guides us to where we need to be.” Namely, to anyone in the surrounding community struggling with the devastation wrought by cancer. “We have a true connection to what they’re going through because we’ve lived it.”

Let’s study the Bible
The person God blesses
(Read Psalm 1:1-3)
“His delight is in the law of the Lord ...” (Psalm 1:2)
It’s a person who is separated from the world (Psalm 1:1). The Christian life is compared to a walk (see Ephesians
4:1, 17; 5:2, 8, 15). It begins with a step of faith in trusting Christ and it grows as we take further steps of faith in obedience to his word.
Walking involves progress, and Christians are to make progress in applying Bible truths to daily life. But it is possible for the believer to walk “in the darkness,” outside the will of God (1 John 1:5-7). The people God blesses are careful in their walk; though they are in the world, they are not of the world.
By contrast, it takes little imagination to see the person walking near sin, then standing to consider it and finally sitting down to enjoy “the pleasures of sin for a season.”
(Hebrews 11:25)
It’s a person who is saturated with the Word (Psalm 1:2). Those whom God blesses are not delighted with what pertains to sin and the world; they delight in the word of God. It is love for and obedience to the Bible that bring blessing on our lives. See Joshua 1:8.
The people God blesses not only read the word of God daily, but they study it, memorize it and meditate on it during the day and night. Their mind is controlled by the word. Because of this, they are led by the Spirit and walk in the Spirit.
Meditation is to the soul what “digestion” is to the body. It means understanding the Word, “chewing on it” and applying it to our lives, making it a part of the
Thank You
The family of Larry V. Gearhart would like to thank those for the flowers, cards, prayers and visits and the ladies of the Fulton Baptist Temple who brought in food twice a week.

May God Bless You All, Rick Gearhart, Diane Gearhart and Families
inner person.
It’s a person who is situated by the waters (Psalm 1:3). Water for drinking is a picture of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39). The Christian is here compared to a tree that gets its water from the deep hidden springs under the dry sands.
This world is a desert that can never satisfy the dedicated believer. We must send our “spiritual roots” down deep into the things of Christ and draw upon the spiritual water of life. See Jeremiah 17:78, Psalm 92:12-14. There can be no fruit without roots. Unless Christians spend time daily in prayer and the word and allow the Spirit to feed them, they will wither and die.
The believer who draws upon the spiritual life in Christ will be fruitful and successful in the life of faith. When Christians cease to bear fruit, it is because something has happened to the roots (Mark 11:12-13, 20; and see Luke 13:6-9).
What kind of fruit are we to bear? See Romans 1:13 and 6:22, Galatians 5:22-23, Hebrews 13:15, and Colossians 1:10.
Of course, the perfect example of this godly person in Psalm 1:13 is Jesus Christ. He is the way (Psalm 1:1), the truth (Psalm 1:2) and the life (Psalm 1:3); see John 14:6.

Alta Rock Madlem Matriarch Of The Family
Alta Rock Madlem, 94, Rochester, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.
On April 24, 1929, Alta Jane Hittle was born in Rochester to Ralph and Nellie Whitaker Hittle. As one of seven children, she shared her childhood with a twin sister and five brothers. Proudly she graduated with the class of 1948 from Richland Center High School.
Alta and Donald W. Rock were married on June 4, 1950, in Richland Center. They shared 40 years of life’s adventures. From their union came four wonderful children including a daughter, Donna, and three sons, Darl, Richard and John. The family tree has continued to grow with the added blessings of three more generations.
As the matriarch of the family, with a heart for agriculture and a strong work ethic, Alta oversaw the daily operations of the family farm, rising early to milk 60 Holstein cows. Many times their family had another 40 head in the dairy herd, raising them to be their producers of the future. She also made sure the calves, chickens, sheep and rabbits were fed. During harvest time, with fields of corn, soybeans, wheat and hay, she was often found seated atop the Oliver tractor pulling a loaded wagon. She certainly had loaded many wagons as well. Every year Alta planted a big garden to enjoy the fresh vegetables and to can for her family’s wintertime use.
To relax, Alta made rag rugs on a loom that had been her grandmother’s. She had also continued to care for and maintain her mother’s Christmas cactus that had been started in 1948. An avid reader, she especially enjoyed romance novels. Alta was a member of the Green Oak Club and sang in the choir at Macy Christian Church.
Later Alta and John E. Madlem were married on March 12, 2000, in Florida. They shared three years prior to his passing on Dec. 18, 2003.
Left to cherish Alta’s memory are three sons, Darl Rock and wife Janet of Rochester, Richard Rock and wife Jeannie of Grass Creek and John Rock and wife Linda of Twelve Mile; 11 grandchildren, Seth Rock and wife Marianne, Tammy Vigar and husband Steve, Sandy Lunhow and husband Brad, Kelly Wolf, Stacy Nicely and husband James, Jackie Powell and husband Chris, Josh Kirby and wife Brittany, Courtney Kirby, Amy Riley and husband Aaron, Erin Rock and Andrew Rock and wife Maggie; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Alta in death are her parents; husband, Don, on July 25, 1990; daughter, Donna Kirby on Nov. 24, 2008; twin sister, Alice Shotts; five brothers, Gerald, Wayne, Raymond, John and Jim; and her canine companion, Harper.
A celebration of the life of Alta Rock Madlem will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, at Good Family Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 12, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Richland Center Cemetery.

Rochester City Pool relieves the heat
The week after Memorial Day was a scorcher, with temperatures reaching into the 90s on multiple days. This may explain Rochester City Pool’s recordbreaking attendance on Tuesday, May 30, when, according to Pool Managers Ethan Trottier, 240 people came for a cool-off, and he predicted more in the coming days.
“This week has been busy,” agreed Melody Hisey, a secondyear lifeguard, as she surveyed the water and cautioned youngsters in a hurry to get back to the diving board.
Trottier also noted some pool upgrades, which he said are “making our jobs a lot easier,” such as an entirely new filter and pump system. The kiddie pool has also been improved with a new sprinkler, and icecream is now available at the concession stand. “We’re looking forward to having a great summer,” he said.
Entrance to the pool is $4, with no charge for children 3 years of age and under. Season

The importance of pooping
few. On the opposite side, an infection such as Clostridium difficile, or taking too much magnesium may be the culprit.
Editor’s Note: Phyllis Ingham is a Family Nurse Practitioner for Woodlawn Health.
I have been titled “The Angel of Poop,” which should clue you into the fact that I am not afraid to discuss “dirty things.” A patient recently told me, “I can’t go.” Like go where? “You know, I can’t have a bowel movement. Can you give me something?” Unfortunately, this is a conversation that happens too often. So let me give you the basics, so you can play an active part in determining the cause of your bowel complaint.
Pooping is important! Notice how many times a week you have a bowel movement. If less than three per week, or more than two per day, the situation needs investigation. Issues can range from chronic constipation to bowel blockage if you have too
Look at your poop! The color may range from a very light clay to a tarry black. Each color along the spectrum indicates a different disease process. It is a very important clue for your health care provider to decide what is going wrong and to develop a plan of care. For example, light colored feces may be the result of blockage of the gallbladder. The bile stored creates the normal brown color if the organ is working correctly. Dark red or bright red color may indicate a lower gastrointestinal bleed, such as a diverticular or hemorrhoid bleed. On the flip side, the black, tarry stool can be the result of an upper GI bleed, such as an ulcer. It takes eight to 10 hours in the gastrointestinal tract to turn bright red blood to that nasty black.
The consistency of bowel movement is important too. For those
associated with bowel movement? Among the most frequent are cases of diarrhea immediately after eating greasy or spicy food. Again, the gallbladder may be the problem. Do you have problems after eating certain foods, especially bread or
milk? Does stress influence your bowel habits?
Ultimately, rely on your provider to be your partner for better health. Be brave! Have those conversations that no one wants to discuss. You deserve to feel better.

of you who are fans of Dr. Google, research “Bristol Scale.” This is a poop scale with numbers assigned from one, which is hard constipated poop, to seven, which is diarrhea. There is one done with candy as the model for kids. Finally, think about any associated symptoms such as belching, bloating or increased flatus (gas). Note any pain and where it is located. Is there a pattern

Rochester Spring Sports Recap: Keranko advances to state in 800 meters
Editor’s Note: Val Tsoutsouris is sports editor for Rochester Telephone Co. and write the Val T Sports blog at rtc4sports.com.
Boys track Rochester senior R.J. Keranko is headed to the IHSAA boys track state finals. Keranko, a senior, earned his state spot by finishing third in the 800 meters at the Warsaw regional in 1:58.86 Thursday. The time was also a new personal best. His previous best was a 1:59.26 at the 2022 regional at Goshen.
Keranko is state-bound for the first time. He won his second straight sectional title last week in 2:02.18.
Keranko’s third-place finish was worth six team points, and Rochester finished in a tie for 23rd.
The top three finishers in each event plus those meeting a difficult qualifying standard advanced to state.
The Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington will host the state finals at 3 p.m. Friday. Keranko is scheduled to run at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Keranko came into the regional as the No. 13 seed. He finished eighth at the 2022 regional, but six of the seven runners who finished ahead of him graduated. The
one runner who finished ahead of him last year who did not graduate was Northridge’s Jaxon Miller, and Miller won his second straight regional title in 1:55.55.
Penn junior Hudson Kaser edged Keranko for second in 1:58.38. Keranko beat Northwestern’s Colin Feazel (1:59.21) for the last state spot. South Bend Adams’ Bol Agwick was fifth in 1:59.71.
Keranko is the first Rochester boy to qualify for state in the 800 since Wesley Meyer won the 2016 Warsaw regional in 1:56.80. Keranko will be the No. 24 seed out of 27 runners at state.
The other Rochester athlete to compete was senior Chris Rohr, who took 14th in the 3,200 in 10:28.74. Rohr had run a 10:29.97 at the sectional.
Rochester was listed as a “did not finish” in the 4 x 800 relay.
Girls track
Senior Zoe Seward accounted for Rochester’s lone point by placing eighth in the 3,200 meters in 11:55.13 at the Goshen regional May 23. This time was 22 seconds faster than her sectional time at Bremen on May 16 and 39 seconds faster than her time at the Three Rivers Conference meet.
This closed out Seward’s prep running career. She will run for the University of Southern Indiana in the fall.
Meanwhile, Macie Nelson finished in a tie for 10th in the pole vault with a clearance of 9-0 in

her final meet. This broke Nelson’s personal best. Nelson vaulted 8-6 at the Bremen sectional.
Baseball
Combining plate discipline, power and pitching, the Rochester baseball team beat Manchester 17-2 in five innings and gave coach Cory Good a milestone win in a Class 2A, Sectional 36 semifinal at Wabash’s Chris Rood Field Saturday.
Tanner Reinartz led Rochester by going 2 for 3 with three RBIs at the plate, including a two-run double in the second inning that gave the Zebras a 5-0 lead. Carson Paulik opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and he finished with two RBIs.
In all, eight different Rochester players had a hit, and eight different players had an RBI. In addition to Reinartz, Tarick McGlothin and Jake Seuferer also had two hits each. Paulik, Brayden Zink, Ethan Medina, Gavin Young and Zakk Parks had one hit each.
The Zebras also drew nine walks with senior Luke Hunting drawing four.
“We’re not just trying to get a hit or hit the ball,” Good said. “We’re trying to hit the ball hard. And when we can stay disciplined at the plate and make sure that’s our approach, we do damage, and we
did that really well today.”
Meanwhile, three different pitchers combined on a five-hitter. Aaron Huffman struck out six in three innings for the win, and relievers Zink and McGlothin each pitched one perfect inning with two strikeouts to finish the game.
Softball
