This year’s event promises to be better than ever according to its primary organizer, Fred Oden Jr. Oden, who also has served as the Fulton County Historical Society’s president since 2012, has a true passion for putting on this event, especially since the proceeds support the museum. He estimated each year the four-night event attracts around 1,500 people, bringing in around $6,000 after expenses. “It costs around $200,000 each year to keep the museum open,” Oden said. “Every event and fundraiser helps to pay down some of those bills. We do it rain or moonlight. I’ve only ever had to cancel one night because a really bad storm made it impossible.” Oden noted the entire event is run by volunteers, many of whom bring their own ideas and skits to the show. “We welcome people and groups to do their own thing,” he said. “I have some rules that they have to follow, but new things help keep it different every year.” Haunted Woods Trail provides fun for the whole family. Partially guided tours take place beginning at 7:30 p.m. each evening and go on throughout the evening with the last tickets sold at 11 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults ages 12 and older, $3 for children 6-11 and free for kids 5 and younger. The tour takes about an hour, but expect a wait when you arrive. Concessions will be available for purchase with the profits going to the cause. “Even if you don’t want to scare people, we have different volunteer jobs for anyone who wants to participate,” added Dave Nickels, another of the event’s organizers. “There are lots of things we need help, not only during the evenings we’re open, but also getting things set up beforehand and torn down after its over.” Oden said one thing that sets the Haunted Woods Trail apart from many other similar venues is it doesn’t use animatronics to frighten its guests. “Everything we do uses real people,” he said. “A lot of people who have visited the Niles Scream Park have said they actually like ours better. We’ve literally scared the pee out of some people.” Nickels recalled one of his favorite moments was witnessing a group of people running out of a tunnel being chased by a costumed Oden, who was pushing a baby stroller left behind by one of the fleeing guests — with the baby still inside.

He pointed out putting on the Haunted Woods Trail is very time consuming, especially as it comes directly on the heels of the museum’s annual Trail of Courage event. “It’s definitely a family affair,” said Oden.
“It started with my dad, my girlfriend, friends and family members. Many of us still do it every year. There are around four or five of us who set it up and put it together. On any given night, we’ll have around 45 volunteers. We provide food and drink for all the volunteers.” Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Haunted Woods Trail is asked to call the museum at (574) 223-4436. They welcome volunteers of all ages. “Where else can you make money for a good cause and scare people at the same time?” concluded Oden. “I invite everyone to come out and have fun for a reasonable price.”
