tours to perspective volunteers %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU In the quest to find needed volunteers, several area non-profits are offering tours of their organizations and programs to those who might be interested in volunteering. This allows perspective volunteers to learn more about the organization without having to make a serious time commitment. At Church Community Services, visitors often say “I had no idea Church Community Services did this!” In order to make this opportunity available to all, the agency is offering tours at 10:30 a.m. every first (English) and third (Spanish) Thursday of the month. “One of the things that inspired us was the work SPA Ministries does,” said Tom McArthur, executive director of Church Community Services. SPA Ministries offers a monthly tour, which McArthur and others from CCS have taken.

As for the name of CCS’s tours, that came from earlier visitors who often comment they didn’t realize CCS had so many programs. “We’ve been here for 53 years and people are still surprised at what we do,” McArthur said. Guests will tour the agency’s four programs: Food pantry; Seed to Feed, a community gardening program; financial services; and Soup of Success, a job and lifeskills program. Guests will learn how they can make a difference in their community and will receive a bag of famous Soup of Success soup to sample at home. McArthur said CCS typically needs volunteers on a seasonal basis. Right now, volunteers are needed in the organization’s Seed to Feed program making sure the garden thrives and then help will be needed at harvest time. Just as the harvest is winding down, Soup of Success will ramp up and need volunteers to assist in production

and sales. CCS is looking for both individuals and groups to help. CCS will accept middle school aged children who are chaperoned on up to adults as volunteers. To register for a tour go to: www.churchcommunityservices. org/i-had-no-idea or call (574) 2953673. Tour groups will be limited to about 10 people each. Another non-profit trying volunteer interest tours is LoveWay Therapeutic Equestrian Services, located at 54151 CR 33, Middlebury. By taking a tour, perspective volunteers will learn if LoveWay is where they want to donate their time. In the past, a perspective volunteer’s first introduction would be volunteer training. “I don’t want to waste someone’s time and find they’re not interested,” said Arica Freshour, LoveWay’s volunteer coordinator. The hour long tour will provide perspective volunteers with a bit

of LoveWay’s history, information about the program and information about the therapeutic riding classes. An instructor will also be on hand to answer any questions and then there will be a tour of the property. Tours will be offered at 10-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. July 14 and 10-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. July 20. Those interested in taking a tour need to RSVP by sending an email to volunteer@lovewayinc.org or by calling Freshour at (574) 8255666. Shelley Becker, executive director for LoveWay, said the program typically needs about 350 volunteers and she’d like to see 50 to 75 people sign up. The program has lost a number of volunteers to age, just not being able to physically keep up, or due to COVID, not being comfortable being out in society just yet. To volunteer in a class, LoveWay volunteers must be at least

16 years of age. Volunteers don’t need any previous horse experience or experience with kids with special needs. LoveWay has also recently made several changes to its program. It’s changed its schedule from 12 weeks to eight weeks per semester, ending in early November and starting in January. Classes will also be starting later in September so schools will have more time to get the required paperwork turned in on kids who are riding during the school day. Schools sending special education classes to LoveWay for class will be told if they don’t turn their forms in on time, they will be bypassed for a school that is currently on LoveWay’s waiting list. Becker explained the changes will hopefully address some of the stress and exhaustion that was seen in volunteers and the horses toward the end of the recent spring semester.
