Indiana is home to 40 native species of orchid including the tallest and most beautiful, yellow lady’s slipper. Standing 30 inches above the forest floor, the yellow lady’s slipper may be encountered in mid-May along a DNR forest trail. This orchid is so named for its large inflated lower flower. It is pollinated by larger bees, who receive no nectar or pollen as a reward for their efforts. For more information, check out dnr.IN.gov/nature-preserves.
