When it comes to curating lakeside exteriors that wow, there are many options that pack a mean punch without being too overpowering.
Just ask Leslie Kitch, vice president at Bruce Ewing Landscaping in Fort Wayne. “There are many options for patios, including pavers and flagstone,” she said. “(Adding) some type of stone always makes a nice definition to your outdoor living space.”

Landscaping is another important factor, and makes an impactful difference in terms of visual interest.
“Plantings around the patio can provide not only privacy, but also will enhance the aesthetics tremendously,” she said.
And there’s a wide variety, which means plant choices are virtually endless. One thing’s for sure: The beauty and color they provide makes for a striking backdrop. For instance, native plants have become more popular lately because they don’t require as much care as some other options.
Kitch said you also can’t go wrong with flowerpots. In her words, “they provide gorgeous bursts of color and pizazz. Planting herbs that can be used in cooking is a win-win too!”

Rely On The Experts
Whatever you have in mind, it’s important to exercise caution before undertaking a major project. As she reminds readers, “Even though you will want to get moving quickly on this project, we caution people against rushing into something without really thinking it through or working with a qualified professional.”
In other words, you pay for the expertise and won’t regret it, if your DIY project goes south.
This is what professional landscape architects and designers consider before looking for solutions. So, you allocate resources effectively, and put more money towards the things that matter.
Design With A View
Speaking of professionals, Rustin Rumfelt of Beyond Landscaping in Milford offers a perspective on how to create a design without compromising the view. First and foremost, don’t forget the fundamentals, like being courteous to your neighbors. Second, he advises homeowners to plant lowgrowing shrubs, ground covers, and ornamental trees on the lakeside of the property. Shrubs and perennials in different sizes, colors, and shapes lend privacy and visual interest without blocking views.

Placing Hardscapes
Last, be strategic in your placement of hardscapes.
“Be considerate when laying out a patio or fire pit/fireplace so you give you and your neighbors enough comfortable space so everyone can enjoy,” he said. On the note of enjoyment, there’s no need to complicate matters when thinking about which type of firepit to purchase. The traditional, wood-burning firepit delivers for families with budgets of all sizes. Plus, there’s something about the scent of a campfire that takes us back to childhood memories; they’re a nostalgic, cozy source of comfort.

Practical Pergolas
Firepits may evoke nostalgia, while a pergola is practical, yet far from plain. Giant pergolas can visually expand living space, while keeping an outdoor area feeling welcoming and airy. And as a bonus, you can dress up this feature with hanging baskets, vines, and lights to really give it a custom-feel.
There are no rules when it comes to designing your backyard, but it can be a win-win when you keep basic courtesy in mind. So, keep relations with neighbors cordial and create your own outdoor space that adds dimension, beauty, and is created customized to you and yours.
