HOME LIVING | How To

HOST THE PERFECT PARTY

By Holli Hattery

With summer finally in full swing, families and friends are looking forward to getting together for possibly the first summer in two years, and 4th of July is a great time to plan a festive BBQ bash in your backyard. Need ideas? We have some to help take your party to the next level and create fun for all ages. Decorations and Ambiance Now is the time to stock up on the red, white, and blue to create a patriotic theme in your yard. Not digging the traditional stars and stripes? You can also opt for bright colors and go with a more Hawaiian or Caribbean theme. If your entertainment space is looking a little dull, hang twinkle lights or round bulb lights outside to create a fun, lighted ambiance around your patio or entertainment space. You can also add an outdoor rug to your patio to add some style and flair. Make sure that you have enough seating for all your guests. Spruce up outdoor furniture with cute new pillows or cushions. You can also bring in potted plants to place around your entertainment space as an easy way to add some color. If you’re planning on partying all day, make sure you have some sort of shade available, whether a pergola, canopy, or simply a giant umbrella, especially for those more sensitive to the heat and sun. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

Games and Entertainment Looking to add some fun to your BBQ? Set up lawn versions of Connect Four, Jenga, Lawn Bowling, and Tic Tac Toe. Don’t forget classic backyard games such as Cornhole and Horseshoes as well. If it gets hot, having a water balloon fight is always a fun way to cool off. Want to make your own sprinkler? Poke holes in a plastic bottle and put it over your hose for hours of entertainment for the kids and adults.

Get Rid of Those Bugs Afraid bugs are going to ruin the fun? Fear not! Citronella Tiki Torches and candles are great options to surround your party place. They are fun and beautiful when the sun goes down. Lavender plants are also a great mosquito deterrent, and it can add a lovely scent to your BBQ. If you’re looking for mosquito repellent spray, look for ones that have 15-30% Deet, as those are the most effective.

Firework Safety Summer means fireworks, and while they are fun, they can also be dangerous. Make sure that fireworks are kept away from children and only lit outdoors. Never throw fireworks at anyone. Make sure you maintain a safe distance from the firework after it’s been lit. Keep water nearby to put out any fires that may be started and make sure to douse used fireworks before putting them in the trash. Summer is a time of fun and gathering with your loved ones. With these tips and tricks, you can turn your backyard into a summer entertainment destination. a
