HOME LIVING | Feature Dive in NORTHEAST INDIANA IS THE PLACE FOR WATER RECREATION THIS SUMMER

By Julie Young Whether you are a novice who is just earning her water wings or someone who has her sea legs and is looking for a bigger challenge, Northeast Indiana offers water recreational opportunities for everyone. From lakes to rivers and reservoirs, guided tours, special events or DIY access points for folks with their own itinerary, the region is awash in summer fun for anyone willing to get a little wet!

Northeast Indiana Water Trails

With over 566 miles of flowing water across 10 counties; 25 villages, towns, and cities; 34 public parks and nature preserves on 14 waterways, the Northeast Indiana Water Trails is your first stop for summer fun on the water. The trails offer eight liveries where equipment can be rented and purchased and a list of public access sites for those who have their own gear. The site also has a running calendar of special events, including the 7th Annual 3Rivers Federal Credit Union Pedal, Paddle, Play July 16, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.neiwatertrails.com

The Fort Wayne Rivers

Fort Wayne was built at the confluence of the St. Joseph, Maumee and St. Mary’s rivers, which can be accessed by boat, Kayak, canoe, and wading. These rivers are popular places to catch walleye and small-mouthed bass, black and white crappie, catfish, bluegill, and more. More proficient anglers may seek out the Northern Pike or Muskie, which can grow over 40 inches in length (and can put up quite a fight.) The rivers are also the perfect spot to put a paddle in the water and travel along any number of routes. Best bets for beginners: Johnny’s Rope Swing Adventure, Shoaff Park Paddle, and Leo-Cedarville Paddle. For those with more experience, we recommend: Shoaff’s Mighty Portage, and Curly’s Suspension Bridge. For more information, visit www.visitfortwayne.com

Fox Island County Park

Looking to do a little swimming this summer? Bowman lake at Fox County Park is a swimming beach where families can spend the day splashing around. (No lifeguard on duty so swim at your own risk.) There is also a doggie beach where you can swim with your pet! For more information, visit www.allencountyparks.org

Hurshtown Reservoir

Built in 1969 to supply Fort Wayne with water in the event of a drought, the Hurshtown Reservoir is not only one of the best fishing spots in all of Allen County, but it also offers water fun and outdoor recreation for the entire family. Pack a picnic and spend the day paddling or windsurfing out on the water. (No gas-powered watercraft are allowed, but rowboats can be rented by the hour or day.) Guests can also relax on the sprawling greenspace and enjoy a game of volleyball, bocci, horseshoes, or badminton with your family and friends. For more information, visit www.fortwayneparks.org

Salamonie Lake

Located between the cities of Wabash, Huntington, and Marion, Salamonie Lake is a 2,665-acre lake property that offers something for everyone in the family. From boating to swimming, kayaking to waterskiing, Salamonie Lake has got it all. Be sure to swing by Pirates Cove Marina to rent watercraft of all sizes to use while on the lake.
