Fashion: Fall Fashion Preview

GLAM + STYLE |

Fall By Lauren Caggiano This fall, you can have your cake and eat it, too. That’s to say owning styles that are equal parts comfortable and fashionable as you transition from work-from-home attire to more refined looks. FASHION PREVIEW Two local boutique owners preview what’s in store for fall fashion — and how you can recreate those runway looks. According to Sue Johnson, owner of Susan’s Fashions in Fort Wayne, this season represents a turning point. “With the pandemic, people are wanting something to cheer them up and make them feel good again,” she said. “So, as unusual as it may seem, neon colors are popping up in sweaters, shoes, and all sorts of accessories.” She suggests combining these bold colors with classics like black or denim pieces, to make a fun statement that’s not too loud. As far as outerwear goes, Johnson said sweater coats are bigger than ever this year. “From plaids, solids, and animal prints,” she said. “And, whether dressing them up with a pair of leggings or nice pants, or pairing them with jeans, it all works!” Don’t be afraid to shine a little brighter, too. “Stars on sweaters, shoes, and jewelry continue to be an important fashion trend,” said Johnson. “Also, splash paint designs on tops and sweaters are a new trend.”

Speaking of sweaters, Emma Metcalf with Lyn-Maree’s Boutique in Auburn said that knits are on-trend, especially a two-piece set or midi. The same goes for midi dresses and skirts. And if you’re more glam than subdued, Metcalf has some good news for you. Sequins — think glitz and glam — are all the rage.

Or maybe you’re looking for a more casual vibe. Metcalf said shackets — a cross between a shirt and jacket — are reigning supreme. These are synonymous with soft and cozy and offer a relaxed and baggy fit. Pair one with a graphic tee and your outfit is (mostly) complete. Don’t forget to make the bottom count, too! Metcalf recommends pairing a crop top with a high-waisted pant style.

Other trends are more retro in nature. “90s grunge is making a comeback, and we’re still seeing some great 70s trends in denim, trendy colors and patterns,” she said.

Or maybe you’re more sporty than trendy. That’s ok. Per Metcalf, “joggers are not going anywhere — dressy joggers to lounging joggers — they are here to stay!”

As far as colors go, Metcalf shared that black is — and will probably always be relevant — this fall. Burnt orange, army green, hot pink, lilac, silver, blue and a bold shade of red are dominating her inventory. Orangered and burgundy are on their way out.

What’s always in style, however, is a flattering denim. Metcalf has advice for women looking to don a straight-cut, high-waisted pant: “Be sure they fit YOU correctly. And stay away from pleated pants, unless you’re 14 you’ll look like you’re just wearing old pants.”

Readers might benefit from subscribing to another related rule of thumb: “As always, be sure you’re pairing your loose bottoms with a fitted top — or fitted bottoms with a loose top,” Metcalf said.

Here’s to finding your signature look this fall — and beyond! a
