oGet out fall/winter clothing and put summer clothes away. If you don’t do this each year, finding a place to store off-season items creates extra room in closets and makes it easier to find what you’re looking for. o Check air filters in the HVAC system. o Replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors as needed. o Change furnace filter(s)/get an annual furnace inspection o Replace water heater insulation o Check caulking around bathtubs/showers

oPut summer furniture away. o Inspect and clean your gutters, downspouts, and drainage system. You should have a plan for removing snow from your roof or gutters so they don’t become too heavy with ice and cause damage to the house. o Check the roof for leaks or damage from tree branches or other objects. o Trim any tree branches that hang over your roof to prevent damage from high winds.
oCheck the condition of exterior doors and windows for drafts or water leaks. One of the most important things is ensuring that all of your windows are sealed and insulated against drafts. o Get a professional to inspect your chimney if you have one. o Inspect electrical outlets for signs of wear and tear.

There you have it: a checklist of everything that needs to be done this autumn in order to prepare your home for winter. Of course, all of these items won’t be necessary for every home, but use this list as a reference to ensure you’re ready for the changing seasons.
