reality is reflected in many facets of the professional world, including fashion. Gone are the days of starched shirts, suits and skirts. Today’s workplace is more casual, which requires a different approach to getting dressed than in previous generations. Is this trend here to stay?
Emma Marie Metcalf with Lyn-Maree’s Boutique in Auburn believes that’s the case. The entrepreneur has experienced this change and it’s reflected in her inventory.
Along with practicality, Metcalf said versatility is another factor at play here. Women wear many hats, but they shouldn’t have to have a wardrobe for each per se.
“I definitely see trends staying more casual,” she said. “I think the whole legging and yoga-wear movement has had a huge effect on the apparel industry.”
“You’ve got to be a Pinterest Mom, full-time employee, entrepreneur, influencer, workoutaholic, chef.... and the list goes on. We simply have to have clothing that fits our lifestyle, not just our workplace,” she said.
That means women are opting to wear pieces that are both cute and comfortable. In her words, “we are not conforming to the idea ‘beauty is pain’ anymore. You can look beautiful, confident and ready to conquer the world in something fashionable and comfortable.” How might that translate at the store? She said women are looking for more comfortable shoes, pants that look professional but have amazing stretch, and tops that are as warm as they are stylish and professional.

Metcalf said those preferences are being accommodated more and more.

“I think designers are finally listening to what we actually want to wear,” she said. “We want to feel good, look good, be comfortable, be able to wear our clothing at home, work, out to dinner, out for drinks... not have 6 wardrobes for every occasion. We have to be more practical in our choices.”
