What women want in workwear

By Lauren Caggiano

This isn’t your mother’s workplace – and that reality is reflected in many facets of the professional world, including fashion. Gone are the days of starched shirts, suits and skirts. Today’s workplace is more casual, which requires a different approach to getting dressed than in previous generations. Is this trend here to stay?

shutterstock.com Emma Marie Metcalf with Lyn-Maree’s Boutique in Auburn believes that’s the case. The entrepreneur has experienced this change and it’s reflected in her inventory. “I definitely see trends staying more casual,” she said. “I think the whole legging and yoga-wear movement has had a huge effect on the apparel industry.” That means women are opting to wear pieces that are both cute and comfortable. In her words, “we are not conforming to the idea ‘beauty is pain’ anymore. You can look beautiful, confident and ready to conquer the world in something fashionable and comfortable.”

How might that translate at the store? She said women are looking for more comfortable shoes, pants that look professional but have amazing stretch, and tops that are as warm as they are stylish and professional. Metcalf said those preferences are being accommodated more and more.

“I think designers are finally listening to what we actually want to wear,” she said. “We want to feel good, look good, be comfortable, be able to wear our clothing at home, work, out to dinner, out for drinks... not have 6 wardrobes for every occasion. We have to be more practical in our choices.” Along with practicality, Metcalf said versatility is another factor at play here. Women wear many hats, but they shouldn’t have to have a wardrobe for each per se. “You’ve got to be a Pinterest Mom, full-time employee, entrepreneur, influencer, workoutaholic, chef.... and the list goes on. We simply have to have clothing that fits our lifestyle, not just our workplace,” she said. Sue Johnson with Susan’s Fashions agrees.

“We have noticed that people who work seem to be dressing more casual,” she said. “It still depends on the work environment and the profession as to what a person is expected to portray.” This is an important caveat, as some people can wear jeans with a nice top and then others can’t wear jeans but can wear nice pants with casual tops and jackets. It all comes down to the profession and the environment. However, in her observations ulta-dressy is out. “It seems that the stuffy suits are in the past and the more relaxed and comfortable styles are in,” she said. “I think that that trend is here to stay, and people do not want to give that style up now that they are into it.” a
