Beauty + Spa: How To Glow Even When It’s 5 Below
How to glow even when it’s 5 below

You can’t leave good skin to chance. Rather, women with glowing skin take care to protect their asset and look and feel great at the same time. Local experts share some tips for getting and maintaining a radiant complexion.
Kate Sedlaczek is a nurse practitioner with Forefront Dermatology. She said while a skincare routine is essential any time of year, it’s especially critical during the winter months.
“As the winter approaches, please remember to protect your skin from cold wind – when it’s freezing outside, the moisturizer itself doesn’t provide protection, so we need to use Vaseline based products, such as Aquaphor or Vaniply ointments, to create protective barrier,” she said.
Some people with certain conditions like rosacea or broken capillaries need to be extra careful, as they can worsen with cold wind and freezing temperatures, she added.
Environmental factors enter into the equation, too. So, it’s advised to take extra precautions to avoid harming the delicate skin.
“Heat and dryness in the house can cause our skin to get dry and itchy,” she said. “During showers, turn down the water temperature and lubricate with fragrance-free moisturizer into wet skin right afterwards. Don’t forget to drink lots of water, too.” (Experts recommended drinking half of your body weight in ounces each day.)

Lisa Stippich, marketing specialist at Fort Wayne Dermatology Consultants, said healthy glowing skin is within reach if you turn to the right ingredients and products. Here’s what she recommends:
Peptides: These guys pack a mean punch when it comes to the look and feel of our skin. That’s because they have the ability to nourish collagen, improving the overall appearance of the skin’s tone and texture.
Vitamin C: Your mom told you to drink your orange juice and she might have been on to something. “Vitamin C can help nourish collagen and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone,” Stippich said. “It also may have a brightening effect.”
Retinol: Retinol is extolled for its many virtues, including its ability to accelerate cell turnover. It also encourages dead skin cells to naturally exfoliate more quickly, thus revealing healthy, fresh cells. “It provides overall skin revitalization while improving the texture/smoothness of skin,” Stippich explained.
Hyaluronic Acid: Truly a wonder ingredient, it can hold 1000 times its weight in water. “When applied, it creates a barrier for the skin, locking in moisture and improving texture,” Stippich explained. “Skin loses water and moisture as we age. This ingredient will help restore hydration.”
Glycolic Acid: Glycolic acid is another fan favorite because it encourages skin cell turnover, revealing smoother, brighter, younger looking skin.
Here’s to loving the skin you’re in! a
